COVID19: Open for business. And a line at 3pm on a Saturday. SIZE matters. Haven't been here in awhile. And I can tell you that the bread used for the pastrami is different. It's a smaller sandwich than it once was. They still stuff it with their delicious pastrami. And the bread is great. Soft and tasty and doesn't get soggy after a 20 min drive home. But, it's SMALLer than it's used to be. The chili fries?...good, but, a little less flavorful than it used to be. I'll still come here if I'm up from OC. The chili cheese burger so much flavor with fries a side of gravy and an orange bang . I pulled over and ate this on the side of the road because fries have to be eating within minutes and it was too cold outside to eat in the patio area . I parked and ate a few blocks down and despite the side of gravy opening and spilling half way inside the bag I somehow enjoyed the burger so much I'm giving it a 5 star on flavor alone because not sure whose fault that was that the gravy exploded in the bag a few blocks away but I still enjoyed the food . You have to try the chili cheese fries with pickles + chopped tomatoes AND pastrami on top!! That's a snack for 2-3people. The pastrami dip is what they are known for and is very good too. It's not a big sandwich length-wise but they do pile on the meat. Never dry or too salty. Made simple with mustard and pickles. I usually save whatever falls out for breakfast to add to my eggs. This is not a traditional sit down restaurant, but you can sit outside under the patio with tables and benches behind the stand after getting your food. So lucky that there are a few Hat locations within a short driving distance from home, but this Alhambra location is the closest one, not to mention the original location. The Hat is known for its pastrami, and you definitely should get the Pastrami Burger or the Pastrami Dip. The pastrami is always perfectly cooked super tender and mouth-watering delicious, definitely worthy to be called "world famous." The pastrami items are the priciest items on the menu, but The Hat gives you an incredible amount of pastrami! My other favorite at The Hat is the Chili Burger, and if you're really hungry, there's a Chili Double Burger! Don't forget the Onion Rings to go with your burger and/or sandwich! I love French fries, but The Hat slices them way too big to my liking. Thank goodness the onion rings more than make up for their french fry shortcomings since they are some of the tastiest onion rings I've ever had. Please be warned though that The Hat is extremely generous with its French fry and onion ring portions. A small order of either one is more than enough for three to four to share, and I guess a large order is perfect to share for a very large family or group of friends. The staff at The Hat is always friendly and welcoming, and service has always been super fast and efficient. I have visited every Hat location and today's visit to the Atlantic Blvd location was my worst experience. Made online order. Walked in and ask at pickup about order. Was told to wait, it was coming up. 10 minutes later I asked again and was told this time to check in at register. Should have told me this the first time. sat down and SIL went ask for plates and ketchup. Open later than the other locations (1:00 AM for this one, as of writing), friendly staff and food came very quickly for us. Can't go wrong with the classic pastrami dip sandwich, along with the onion rings. Even though we ordered a small size of the onion rings, they were sure generous with the amount! It overflowed the container and got our takeout bag extra oily. But the breading on them sure was nice and flavorful, not just a pile of grit and grease like most other fast food places. read more

It's fine I guess. I'm just disappointed compared to what it used to be. I haven't been to this location for over a year. I get it, inflation is a bitch. But now the pastrami sandwich is half the size and has half the meat and yet they still have raised prices a little . And they even skimp on the French Fries. Service at this location has always been poor, I know that going in. But usually the food is worth it. Honestly I'd rather just y'all charge me a few bucks more and go back to what you used to do and get rid of all the bumbs and drug deals in your parking lot. Yum yum yum! I've been to the Hat from different locations numerous times and i like their pastrami and chili cheese fries. Today, I ordered their pastrami dip for my husband and a burger for myself. I fell in love with my burger after the first bite. Their burger is so flavorful & the meat is really juicy (yum!). I'm going to definitely ordering more burgers from them. During COVID-19, they practice and reinforce social distancing by labeling the 6 ft part labels on the floor. Their patio dining is currently open & I can see customers eating there today! Best Pastrami ever. I can't speak to any other sandwich on the menu because, since I was introduced to The Hat -- in 1986 -- and their famous Pastrami Dip, it is the only sandwich I have ever ordered. And The Hat has a large menu. I remember loving The Hat's Onion Rings, but they, in combination with my requisite Pastrami Dip, are too much for me now. Sucks to get old. Love the Pastrami. Not too sure if I'm ordering the wrong things here, but the pastrami dip was just... meh, at a meager 5/10. I also got their cheeseburger once and that's also a 5/10. To be honest, I get the tuna on whole wheat now every time I go here now lol. On our most recent family vacation to Southern California we headed to the original location of The Hat in Alhambra, California. In 1951 The Hat opened up at started serving its world famous pastrami dip sandwiches. They have eleven locations- Alhambra (original), Brea, Glendora, Lake Forest, Monterey Park, Murrieta, Pasadena, Rancho Cucamonga, Simi Valley, Temple City and Upland. The original location in Alhambra has a decent sized parking lot, an out door section with tables and seats, walk up to the counter and place an order (easy peasy). They serve their famous pastrami dip sandwich, burgers (cheese, chili, double, turkey, pastrami) , cold deli sandwiches (tuna, turkey, ham, ham and cheese etc), side orders- fries, chili fries, wet fries, onion rings, potato salad), drinks - soda, water, horchata, coffee and milk. We opted for: pastrami on sourdough (5/5) wet fries (4/5) The pastrami was really delicious - the best I've tasted to date. It was tender and seasoned perfectly. My friends who recommend The Hat to us love the wet fries. The wet fries consist of perfectly fried french fries swimming in their homemade gravy (almost poutine but not). The wet fries were huge and the gravy spicy. This place was hopping when we went. The food is fresh and delish and the customer service fast and friendly. Finally decided to try out the Hat after being a Alhambra resident for 15+ years. I ordered the pastrami burger and it was definitely worth the hype!! At first, I was hesitant to buy the pastrami burger because of the price point, but after trying it, I can say that the cost is justified. For a group of 4, a small fries will get the job done, but I'm one man so I took them home for later. There is no drive thru and the only seating is outside around the back. My dad remembered their pastrami sandwich and mentioned he wanted to have it again. So when we had to run an errand nearby we stopped by for a pastrami dip $10.79 and small fries $3.59. The line at around 11 AM on a weekday was short. We got our order in less than 10 minutes. Everyone working inside had a mask on. The place looked and felt clean. At home after warming up the pastrami dip it tasted soft, fatty and yummy, though not greasy. The fries had to be crisped up in a toaster oven and then they tasted fine. I'm glad I took the advice of another Yelp reviewer who wrote the small fries is big enough to feed 3-4 people. We ate the fries for 2 more meals. We will be back. read more

Well, today as I was returning from my O.M.T session with my intern at dr. Paul Sucgang office I caught sight of the iconic signage atop of the eatery. So I decided to roll the dice and pick up a hot roast beef with gravy and their order of small fries... lol although when I got to my table back home and emptied the bag, I discovered that I had been given a hot roast beef with aus jus . Now normally I'd be freaking out! Lol with frustration and falling to the floor screaming up towards the heavens... WHY ME!!! But, upon further consideration.. I reached the conclusion that this may very well be a better option. My famed hot roast beef with gravy and fries has become a bit too heavy a meal...even minimized to my post gastric resection pouch sized portions... I'm now enjoying my deliciously crafted pickle and amazing fries... all of which are putting a smile upon my face. THIS IS SCRUMPTIOUSLY DELICIOUS.... Slowly and confident that this selection will be a positive selection for lunch. I ain't as young as I used to be. In my twenties, I could've eaten two pastrami sandwiches, no problem. On this last visit, I could only do a half. The meat is as tasty as I remember it. Not too fatty, but there is the expected amount of gristle found in this cut of meat. It's what fixed pastrami its texture. The roll was able to soak up the juices and held up quite well! I also like the banana peppers to give it an extra kick. I really wanted to eat the whole thing but couldn't without sparking some acid reflux. If I am craving for pastrami, I go to this place! I always order the Roast Beef Pastrami with a side of fries. I think this sandwich is good to share! The meat is so juicy and flavorful. They have a generous serving of fries too - which I barely finish. There are lot of choices of condiments also. I prefer mixing the ketchup and mayonnaise when I eat my fries.
