So I have been curious about this place. We went during lunch. Ordered a lunch special that had a quesadilla, soup, and salad. The quesadilla was meh..it really wasn't as cheesy as it could have been. The tortilla was really crisp and dry in some parts because no cheese...The soup was tasty...although the clam chowder I tried was much better. The salad was a normal salad. Came for breakfast with a friend of mine who recently moved to Vashon and immediately loved the outside and the decor. We were sat in a big booth, as it was late for breakfast but still had a view of the whole restaurant and outside. Our waiter came right away and we ordered coffee. He brought us two little donuts with our coffee -- on the house and homemade! Good lord they were delectable. Juicy, if you can say that about a donut, I don't know how but they were so moist and soft and sweet and delicious. I'm already in love with The Hardware Store. Everything on the menu looked amazing. My friend ordered a poached egg on hash dish, I got the wild mushroom omelette special. The food came out pretty quick and it was incredible. At least the main dish was. The potatoes were so-so but the breads were terrific and they bring you butter and homemade, I think, jam. The portions are perfect. Just enough to satisfy but not over the top. The menu said "three-egg omelette" but it didn't seem like very much. I eat a one-egg omelette (whipped with cream) everyday and this didn't seem like three times as much. But I was actually happy about that. Usually restaurants serve way too much for breakfast. The coffee was good and hot and we got constant refills. The atmosphere is so laid back but the service and presentation were impeccable. A great combo! If I lived on Vashon, I would be here every day. read more

A bit expensive (of course, we are at Vashon Island) but pretty tasty. We had a brunch there and we were very satisfied. I have to say that hey have one of the best Eggs Benedict ever. All the other meals like Crab cakes or Morning 3-Egg Omelet were very good but Eggs Benedict were delicious. Service is nice and I really like the enviroment. Just don´t sit in the front part when it´s cold outside. You feel like in freezer everytime when someone opens door. And I also found out that wines from Vashon Island or Washington generally are not something what I wanna drink twice. But if someone likes sauer wines than you will love it :-) read more

Food was fine, but service was just okay. Our waitress was nice and friendly and well-meaning, but the service was slow-paced and forgetful. A forgotten appetizer came out with the entrees, and bread that was offered as an apology for the wait never made it to the table. Even with the mistiming, the appetizers were great. Our burgers and fries could have been warmer, though. Overall, food was fine and we won't rule out going back. The service was friendly and our server was sweet, and we could tell that she was experienced, but it seemed she might have been distracted that night. Update: went back the following morning because the spot we were going to try was closed. Service was much more focused this time! Like I said before, friendliness is not the issue, but the breakfast service was definitely more on it than the dinner service the night before. Am updating my rating from 3 to 4 stars. read more

The salad and sandwich were great, but the roasted red pepper soup was a bit off. It looked so nice on the plate. I added some sugar, salt and ground pepper to the soup to tame its sour flavor, which originally was not to my taste. It may have been nice to other pallets, to be fair.... I had a high quality Americano coffee served with a nice selection of high quality sweetener options. Very delicious with lovely sugar in the raw cubes. The bathroom is clean and tidy. The wait staff are very friendly, and the location in a very old Hardware store with original wood floors is authentic. They just need to work on their soup. read more

Wow, I really liked the breakfast I had at The Hardware Store. I get that Vashon has only a few breakfast options and it just depends on what sort of experience you are looking for. Unlike Sporty's, The Hardware store is a more polished, upscale fancy sit down restaurant with glossy wood floors, beautiful atmosphere, a healthy gourmet-tasting menu, and higher prices. Full bar I didn't experience but noticed. Very nice waiter who accommodated special orders for blueberries with oatmeal. I had a "Melinda's Breakfast," which was delicious California-style kale with spinach, sausage and tofu, yummy home fried potatoes and toast. Great side of raspberry jam came with. We took a drive today to Vashon Island as we have never been there. Driving through, my husband saw this store front and said "that's where we are going to order lunch from". I'm sure no locals eat here. Just a tourist trap. Very over priced and low quality. Paid $15.00 for two eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast which you can get at Denny's for $8.00 and better quality. They only have two egg dishes for breakfast. The other is Eggs Benedict which came on a Wonder Bread style English muffin. No one at our table ate more that a quarter of their potatoes which were overly salted. Our blue haired server made numerous errors with our orders: several wrong items, forgot two items, one person in our group didn't get her order till the others were half finished eating. Such a nice change of pace from Seattle. We walked in on a Saturday morning at 10:30 and were immediately seated at the bar. Boyfriend and I got a orange juice and latte, both were really good. We shared the French toast and eggs benedict. The portions were perfect and very fresh. Service was super friendly. Pace is very relaxed. Some regulars came in just was we were leaving and our waitress knew exactly what they wanted. So cute. The dining area seems to fill up with reservations so if you have kids or a party bigger than three you can't sit at the bar like we did, so I would call ahead! I cannot speak to the quality of food. We did not eat here because the customer service the minute we entered was rude. We simply asked for a menu and the hostess gave us the menu, a side of attitude and walked away. As a queer couple and gender queer person, it is important to know safe places and friendly places. I don't usually leave negative reviews and try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I had been here once before and took my daughter and her family today. I wish we had gone somewhere else. The staff is seemed genuinely bothered by guests, continually rolled their eyes at a for asking questions, and were completely rude to us. We traveled a long way to introduce our kids to something local and new to them. It is very unfortunate that the employees made it so that they will never go back. I will say that many of the Vashon locals also seemed to treat us the same way, so maybe it is the island that just doesn't want the revenue from those off of their island. Yet, it has seen increased competition over the last few years, and is struggling to keep up with the changing landscape of the times, as residents explore new options. The menu is quite limited but the food is pretty dependable. The staff is always adequate and serviceable. The interior furnishings are a bit tired with age and could use restoration or replacement. We had a lovely time at the Hardware store! My friend and I were visiting the island and found that there are limited places to eat and the Hardware Store was one of the only places open on a Tuesday night. That being said we loved it! We had to wait a bit to be seated and it was far busier than I'd expected so I'd encourage you to make a reservation even if you don't think you need one! Once we were settled our waitress was very sweet and offered good honest advice about the dishes. To start we had clams that were cooked in a delicious flavorful sauce that we slurped dorm after our dipping bread ran out. Then for our main course we had Caesar salads which were good (but it's hard to screw up a Caesar) and very very large! A great value for only $9. My dad and I stopped here for breakfast after reading reviews (and the fact that it was basically the only place to get breakfast on the island). It started off a little rough because our sever took our drink order but never brought it. Then another waitress came by and had to re-take our order but by looking around you could see they were slammed with not enough help! I only saw one person cooking, too! However, they redeemed themselves with the coffee we ordered and a cute plate of side options for our coffee. They also were very accommodating to my two year old-crayons and a coloring page! And they brought her milk out right away-yes! The coffee wasn't very good even when doctored up a bit but...You win some, you lose some. What they lacked in coffee they definitely made up for with our meals. I cannot remember the names of them but they were awesome! Very nice portions for the price! And, our food came promptly! Showed up with 9 people on a weekday, all family, and they were very accommodating and gave us a place outside to eat together. They turned on their heaters as well. Even though we had small kids, they didn't seem phased by that and I didn't feel "bad" for having my family there. Food was great. One of the best clam chowders I've had. Tremendous place. If you're looking for a restaurant with exceptionally courteous staff, low wait times, great ambiance, and tremendous food for a fair price, then come here. We came with a party of 7 just 20 minutes before they closed the lunch kitchen and they made every effort to get us seated and fed ASAP. Where the kitchen could have rushed out our food for being so late they instead cooked us a smorgasbord. I personally recommend the True Cod Fish Sandwich with their fries. Many people don't make a big deal about the fries but these were fried to perfection with the fish patty fried just as well. Stayed on the island over the holiday weekend and made reservations to visit this place. We walked in and stared at 3 people at the front desk who never made verbal contact. After about a minute we said hello. Bad sign when you (as the customer) have to initiate the conversation when you walk in to a restaurant. We were sat in a dark corner and instead decided to move ourselves to the open seating at the bar to sit near a window. Food was EXTREMELY sub-par for such a "popular" spot. I got one of their pizzas, which wasn't very warm or fresh. My wife got their fried chicken salad expecting crispy fried chicken but instead got warm soggy pieces of breaded chicken. Too many other good places to eat on the island if you visit. Do not waste your time or money here!! read more

Went on a weekend trip to Vashon. We asked some locals where we should eat and they recommended The Hardware Store. I'm like look I'm not looking for hardware I'm looking to eat but they explained it was just the name of the restaurant so we agreed to go here. The scenery was very homey and welcoming. The hostess greeted us right away and asked us where we would like to sit. Our waitress was amazing and she was very personable. She made out first experience so great. I can't remember her name but she was the shiznit!! I ended up ordering the buttermilk fried chicken salad and when I tell you this is one of the best fried chicken salads I've had it really is hands down. Like both hands down. The chicken was amazing and perfectly seasoned and what really pieces everything together was their ranch. It's so good! Sheeeshhh I can't remember what my friends got but they both enjoyed their food as well. We all left with empty plates, full stomachs and were very pleased with our food. First time to Vashon Island. This place had a fairly long wait, which I took as it being a good place to eat. They called my phone when our table was ready. Unfortunately, we came after the 2pm brunch cut off time. I would've liked to try their breakfast options. Their lunch menu was disappointingly small. It was either a burger or salad. I did find fish tacos on the menu which is what I went for. They were pretty good. Their tortillas were doubled up. The coleslaw was good as well. The other two people I went with had a burger and fish and chips. They said the fries were really good and the ketchup was too. The burger was alright, fairly dry. No complaints on the fish. The service was good. Meals are $9-15. I'd like to try the breakfast sometime. That menu was more impressive. read more

Our server was Christian, he never came to check on us after taking our order. Never brought us napkins or silverware. He was too busy flirting at the bar. We waited patiently until we finished our food and drink. I finally had to interrupt his "conversation" with a girl and ask for napkins from across the bar. He said sure, but continued to talk to her for a while. We were sitting there with dirty hands and finally had to ask another server. It started off as good service initially, but went downhill quickly. I witnessed the table next to us walk over to ask for napkins as well. The server eventually came to get us our check and said "thanks for bearing with me." In hind sight I wish I had asked if I could tip the cooks and other server who actually helped us, but left him no tip explaining it was crappy service.
