A lot of franchises get complacent. Quality and service drop, and Halal Guys is no exception. This is my go to one now. The chicken, beef, and other options are fresh. This restaurant is located in a large strip mall with tons of parking available. They have a small dining room with bar seating along the window facing out and a few tables and chairs. This restaurant seems like more of a carry out joint. The staff there is very friendly and helpful. They made great suggestions to make my sandwich the best possible. They serve platters/bowls, gyros, and sandwiches. All you do is choose your style (platter, sandwich, platter) then you choose you protein (beef gyro, falafel, chicken and spicy barbecue chicken) and then you choose your toppings. Most of the topping are free, but there are some premium ones such as hummus, jalapeños and olives that cost extra. I ordered a spicy buffalo chicken sandwich with a side of fries. It took about 8 minutes for my food to be prepared. I got it to go. It was delicious. The sandwich was amazing. It was very flavorful and I really enjoyed it. If you were wondering, it traveled well and my taking it home did not affect the taste. This place may not look like much on the outside, but they have some delicious food and great service. When it comes to Halal Guys, you really can't go wrong with the amount of food they give you. Honestly every time I come here I'm always full. The regular combo platter is my go to meal and it's hefty. Chunks of Gyro Meat and Chicken are generous, Scoops of rice along with vegetables to compliment your food. The amount of white sauce may be a bit too much but that's more of a personal preference. Overall, it was very quick to get food as the person making the bowl was following a rhythm to it. Fries took a few minutes to cook but they are made fresh on the spot. There's a few tables where you can sit down, but the counter space is positioned a bit awkwardly to sit down at.. the space is small but you gotta do what you have I suppose. read more

I have reached out to their corporate company several times, inquiring about what type of oil they use to fry their items like their falafel, meats, french fries etc. they repeatedly refuse- they act as if its a trade secret. It's especially concerning because they also refuse to acknowledge which allergens their food and oils can contain. Many people are allergic to soy, dairy, tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, eggs, corn, sometimes wheat. Restaurants are obligated to inform people if their products contain any allergens. Somehow they feel they aren't obligated to reveal this information. Their food is poor quality and cheaply made, so I would assume they use the cheapest cooking oils possible like canola or soy or corn. Their white sauce has an ingredients list and its full of soybean oil. At some point they started offering flavored lemonades as "craft beverages". These are completely misleading. They label them craft beverages which gives the impression they are hand made and higher quality. They have very enticing pictures- like showing real passion fruit chunks, real mint leaves, or real pomegranate chunks mixed into lemonades. The reality is the lemonade you receive is the exact same plain yellow looking lemonade. I called them regarding the lemonade and they informed me there are no actual fruits or mint leaves blended with lemonade- they actually just have different flavored syrups that they add into normal lemonade. It's completely misleading to have these pictures showing real mint leaves, real fruits like pomegranate, mango, passion fruit etc and labeling them as craft beverages. read more

The restaurant is very small and I disliked how the area to the bathrooms were almost pitch black. It was so difficult to see and easy to bump into others trying to use them. Regardless, the food was great and had LARGE portions! It was very speedy, fresh, and tasty! They didn't disappoint. I had a sandwich with beef gyro meat, fries, and mango lemonade. They are very generous with the meat, and have toppings ranging from the plain (lettuce, tomato, onion) to the more exciting (olives and jalapenos). I personally prefer gyro-style meat, whereas they use diced steak. The tzatziki type sauce is tasty, and given that I keep kosher-ish, it's nice to have a place where I can eat it with beef! This restaurant has the potential to be good but my order was very disappointing. Rice was hard and tasted old and undercooked. I got beef and chicken. The beef was SUPER dry with minimal flavor. The chicken was more flavorful but was also dry kind of felt old or as if it was made a couple days prior. I didn't like the taste of the white sauce compared to other places I've had similar meals but I will blame that on personal preference. I was very hesitant to do a review of this business, because of its fast growth and the fact that there is already talks of more locations opening up. But then I thought, you know what? Virginia only has three locations, and before it gets to be really big, I better get this review out of the way before it becomes something unreviewable. The food is bland. Yep, I started out that way. Because it is. I got myself the gyro chicken, falafel balls, and rice, with their "signature" yogurt sauce, basically a blander Tzatziki sauce. It is a filling meal, but everything really had no taste. The falafel was completely dry and lacked any kind of really good flavor, and I really had high hopes for this. The gyro meat is highly inconsistent, pieces either are really good or dried out where the taste was taken out of it. The rice barely tasted anything of that of a taste, and the pita pieces that came on it were wet and tasteless too. There are only two reasons I am being generous with my review. 1.) The prices are fair for what you're getting, and 2.) I also got a baklava for dessert, and that was really, really good. Sweet and full of flavor. If my lunch was just as flavorful as the dessert, this review would get twice the star rating, but unfortunately it falls woefully short. I was headed to PotBellys but decided to go to Halal Guys which is right next door. I heard about this place a while back and wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. Initially, I couldn't decide between the platter and the gyro. The platter is a LOT OF FOOD, so I decided to go with the gyro which is pretty large as well, but a few bucks cheaper. I ordered the chicken gyro, lettuce, rice, tomatoes,onions and green peppers. I topped it off with the white sauce which is a mayo based sauce with lemon, egg yolk and a few other ingredients. The place isn't that big. I found a nice spot at the counter that looked out onto the parking lot. As soon as I put that gyro up to my mouth, I got a whiff of an unpleasant smell. I'm thinking maybe it's the combination of the items. I'm known to have a stomach of steel so I didn't think twice about it. The more bites I took, my stomach was like, "Steel where...not today!?!" I don't like to throw food away, so I continued to force feed myself this gyro. There was so much left, I couldn't take it. I got up and threw it away. There was a steady stream of customers and many people were ordering the platters (not sure of the meat option). I overheard this guy who walked in raving about how delicious the spicy lamb was. He wanted to order it again, but they didn't have any (this was before 12pm on a Friday). He still ordered another item and said he would be back next week. They had non spicy lamb and beef. Chicken over Rice was ordered, and the rice was cooked well; the chicken, however, was dried out, underseasoned, and not flavorful at all; the white sauce, which was requested to be laid on thick, didn't help, either. I also wasn't too fond of the smell that the meal was giving off. I finally made my way into the much-hyped Halal Guys! Didn't have the guts/patience to brave long lines for their grand openings around the area but better late than never, eh? My friend ordered the combo platter (chicken and gyro) and I got the chicken one, and both were delish, especially once their special white sauce (I can now see why it's so ridiculously popular - stuff is goooood) was all mixed in. The platters each came with meat, rice, pita bread, their signature white and hot sauces, and some salad, and there's the option to add chopped onions and green peppers and tomatoes on top as well if you'd like (I loved the crunch factor that the onions and green peppers provided so would recommend doing that). The meat was flavorful - again, even more so with the white sauce on top - and the pita bread was so ridiculously soft that I actually ate the whole thing and kind of wanted another (usually it's the one part of such platters I'm the most meh about)! The food was definitely good enough to come back for, but one of the most noteworthy pieces of my visit was the service. There was a small mix-up with my order which initially bothered me, but when I brought it to the manager's attention he quickly apologized and made it right. The other employee assembling the orders was very sweet as well, and their demeanor made dining in a pleasant experience overall. I wasn't overly fond of the seating inside (very few tables and they're all wrapped around the service area practically) but I understand that they're fast-casual so ambiance-setting is not really a part of their appeal. So glad The Halal Guys are here! It's located in a shopping plaza. There is limited seating inside, about 2 small tables and some counter seating. This is more of a grab and go type joint. Their menu is the same as the ones in NY. I always get the combo chicken with gyro over rice. It comes with lettuce, tomatoes, pita, white and red sauce. If you don't want your meal drenched in sauce, ask for the sauces on the side. This way you can control how much sauce you want in your dish. Portions are similar to the ones in NY. As far as flavor, there is a slight difference. For some reason, the seasonings on the meat is a bit lighter here. Service is quick and friendly. Employees are on point and the cashier was sweet and made sure all the orders were coming out in a timely fashion. My order was missing pita bread and an employee kindly gave me some with a few extra slices. Restrooms in the back is clean. This was my first time eating middle eastern food, and halal in general! It definitely gets points for being fast and super fresh! We were greeted by a young man, who when I told it was my first time, got really excited and was SUPER helpful! I wish I got his name! You have the option of getting a bowl of food, which comes with your choice of chicken, gyro, or a combination of both (which is what I got!) or a pita! The bowl comes with yellow rice, lettuce, tomatoes, and pita. I asked to get green peppers and onions as well! They're famous for their white sauce (which tastes a bit like ranch to me), and hot sauce! I got these on the side instead of having it drizzled right on the top of the meat. Their hot sauce packet says "very spicy" on it .. BELIEVE IT!! I LOVE my spicy food, but this was a thicker variety and that has a "stays in your mouth for ten minutes" type of burn!! I had a half of a half of a dab and I could not take it! So beware! I wish there was more seasoning on their meat, however. I've been dying to check this place out for a long time. I was so happy when I saw there was one nearby! We stopped in for a late dinner and we were helped immediately. The menu is super easy to read and you can quickly figure out what you and really fast. I got the Combo Platter with the toppings and white sauce. This bookmark has been on my list for the longest time! I was willing to brave the long lines. I almost drove as far as the one in Vienna. We randomly chose to visit the Springfield location around 4:00pm on Sunday! It was a win win choice. (1) NO LINE (2) chipper food greeter lady who explained the choices (3) the food was SO awesome I went with a small combo platter of beef gyro and falafel. For an extra $1, I added more falafel for a total of 4. I love falafel and these were SO yummo. Their combination of rice, lettuce, tomatoes and meat just made me want MORE! Since we did takeout we asked for our "white sauce" on there side. They gave us packets. For an extra .50, we snagged another bag. This white sauce is their special mixture of a mayo based sauce. I attempted to add more flavor to my meal by squirting the "tiny" hot sauce packet on half of my mea. DO NOT ATTEMPT unless you can deal with mouth vibrations! The selection is a lot larger then the Dunn Loring location. They offer a falafel platter and a few sides such as baba ganoush, tahini with pita and fries . The BF decided he wanted to get a gyro sandwich this time and a combo of chicken and beef gyro platter. I decided to take my chances with beef gyro platter with extra falafel for $1.00. We also got a side of baba ganoush $2.99. We also got an additional white sauce and hot sauce additional sauce is .50 extra. Although the hot sauce I ordered on the side so really it shouldn't have been an additional .50 considering they gave my hot sauce to the girl in front of me and she didn't pay extra. Anyway...food wise the platter was pretty good decent amount of rice and gyro meat. It was nicely seasoned and the falafel was surprisingly good not too grainy still had a bite a bit dry but still had a crisp exterior especially since my order was to go. I got 3 pieces for $1.00. The BF took his chances Again and ordered a combo platter he says this time the chicken was moister and juicier but still flavorless. He wasn't impressed by the sandwich says it was okay. Came in today at 11:15, got a combo platter, and the meat and rice was cold, I let the person behind the counter know that he was serving cold food to people, he said something like it's heating up, not sure exactly what he tried to tell me, so I sat back down, tried to eat some more, then spoke to the employee again and suggested he tried some of the food to see what I was talking about, again stressing that the food was cold, he offered no solution to me. So I sat back down again then watched him put all the meat back on the grill to heat it up again then proceeded to serve it to the line of customers. I couldn't finish my food and left. So many people are comparing Halal Guys to their street food experiences overseas, not realizing that this company's roots are in a NEW YORK CITY food cart. They're not aiming to take you back to your favorite kebab spot in London, HG is meant to give you that NYC lunch rush/late night vibe and that's what you get here. The locations lack space but so do food carts. Options are relatively limited but, again, food cart! If you want authentic, homestyle Mediterranean, go elsewhere. Halal Guys is a quick pitstop for when you want a lot of food and a crapton of sauce for a decent price. I'm a falafel girl but I'd imagine people are only craving flavor in their meats because they're going light on the sauce - if that's the case, you're not doing it right.
