Well, the service was pretty bad (tried to ask about if they had the veggie kebob, but there might have been a language barrier and the lady just said they had falafel). The food court wasn't particularly busy, but everyone working was just standing around on their phones the whole time. The man working the grill and who handed me my phone was pretty friendly and accommodating though, when I asked for an extra fork and he gave me extras on all of the cutlery. But the food was really good! I got the salmon salad, which at $19.99 came out to $21.99 after tax. I thought the prices seemed steep but if the food is healthy and fresh enough, I can justify it. It turned out to be a pretty good amount of food--the salad greens were fresh, the salmon portion was large and freshly grilled, and everything came with a warm flat bread, tzaziki-like sauce, pickled chili sauce of sorts, and a chickpea soup. We visited the Grill Kabob at 6:45 on 4/26. We ordered two chicken kabob dinners. Ten minutes later we were given the driest chicken kabab I've ever been served with nothing but rice. When we went back to the counter the three people working there disappeared. For $35 we got dried out chicken, one salad, a boatload of rice and no vegetables. Granted, it was 1/2 hour before closing but they should have not served us. The chicken must have been precooked and reheated. Absolutely the worst food in Springfield mall. It seems like whoever's the manager that day determines whether or not you'll receive (or even be allowed to purchase) extra sauces. The cashiers also are either indifferent to you or are outright hostile depending on whoever is there as well. Our experience was absolutely terrible. We ended up waiting a whole hour just for a sandwich. I had already gotten my sandwich so, we were waiting for my husbands sandwich. The meats are well seasoned and very flavorful, the naan is crisp and fluffy, and the portion size of the rice is absolutely massive. I typically order the number 6 beef and chicken platter, which comes with a small side salad, two portions each of steamed white basmati rice and another steeped in the same spices as the meat, naan and whichever protein you order. All platters come with a side of chick peas and a yogurt sauce, plus a spicy herbal green sauce on request. That said, the service is very bare bones, though in fairness you shouldn't expect stellar service from a mall food court to begin with. The third installment of my "Kabob Kompendium" profiling various joints in the region that can be broken down into a set of common criteria: 1)ethnic focus 2) kabobs 3)side dishes 4)rice 5)condiments 6)bread 7)dining experience 8) unique dishes 9)x-factor(s). Located in the food court of Springfield Mall, this is an outpost of a popular franchise with various locations sprinkled across the DMV. 1) Ethnic focus- Afghan (I promise my next review will veer off Afghan, since I am three for three thus far) 2) Kabobs- fairly standard, chicken/lamb/beef; the kobeeda kabobs (ground chicken or beef) are standouts since they are fork tender and succulent in texture with a nice herbaceous undertone from minced parsley/onion. I often find the ground meat kabobs to be exceedingly dry at other places but they do this option justice. 3) Side dishes- stewed chickpeas and spinach are the mainstays and they both strike a nice balance with the protein/starch combo; not bad, but also not exceptional compared to other similar joints. 4) Rice- they give you two heaping mounds of both seasoned basmati stewed in spices and meat stock and a buttery aromatic plain variety, which is fun to alternate between mouthfuls of meat. 5)Condiments- a creamy mayo-like dipping sauce and a vinegary spicy cilantro green sauce are available, adding additional bursts of flavor. My preference would be to double on the green stuff. 6)Bread- naan bread cooked within a tandoori oven. In comparison with other competing Afgan joints, the bread here is thinner lending itself well to wraps but it is fairly bland in flavor like a bread version of those Matzo meal crackers. A little seasoning could go a long way to making an existing carb-heavy meal worth the extra carbs. 7)Dining experience- If you're situated in a mall food court, there is an expectation of getting one's food in a relatively faster time than a sit-down restaurant, but they cook your food to order which enhances the quality but results in a slightly unreasonable wait. A colleague of mine has resigned to placing an order and wander around the mall to shop at a few places before checking back on his food. Perhaps a higher volume of customers would prompt them to have extra helpings available on standby. 8)Unique dishes- they play it fairly safe here since aside from kabobs they offer gyros and falafel (not sure if these fall within Afghan cuisine) in addition to offering a mystery curry platter which is a soupy concoction (presumably chicken) that is sitting near the side dishes cafeteria style. At least at Kabob Palace (Arlington) one can veer off course into Pakistani specialties and biryanis or Kabob Corner (Stafford) offers more authentic specialties like palau and carayee. While quality is 3.5-3.75, I ultimately rounded down due to service (folks here are fairly non-friendly), time to receive food, and price point is skewed a few bucks higher despite decent portions, especially in the context of competing food stands within the food court. read more

Calm down, guy, customers are your business... giving people an attitude and being short with them is not going to make anyone feel better. Had a quick lunch here with a group of buddies today, and we had a variety of orders through which we shared together. The Bad: 1) Beef kabob was the worst one. 2) The kofta (ground beef) kabob was also bad, it lacked seasoning and the meat was very dry and lacked any juiciness. The Good: (I wouldn't consider these dishes good, but they were fairly better than the previous two) 1) The chicken had a few flavors, it appeared to be seasoned with cumin, black pepper, salt, and egg yolks. 2) The lamb was okay, also poorly seasoned but tasted okay with salt 3) The gyro was my favorite, although it tasted as if it was taken out from a hot water bath. I ordered from them in May on Grubhub. I am about two miles east of Van Dorn on Franconia. They are located in the Springfield Mall and the meal was at my house in about 45 minutes. I got the beef kabob patter with brown rice ($16.89), baklava ($3.89), tandoori bread ($1.94), and green iced tea ($3.24). Afghan food is generally like Indian food but not quite as spicy. The kebob platter came with a salad similar to Greek salad. The ingredients were fresh and the meal was tasty. Baklava is a sweet, flaky dessert with a consistency similar to pie crust. It typically has phyllo dough, chopped nuts, butter, cinnamon, white sugar, vanilla, and honey (https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/9454/greek-baklava/). The delivery fee was $5.49, the sales tax was $1.56, the service fee was $1.36, and the tip for the driver was $6.87. I do not mind paying a tip for the driver, but I should not have to pay Grubhub service and delivery fees. The expenses of delivery are borne by the driver and not by Grubhub. This is on top of the 30% fees Grubhub is charging the restaurant. Overall the meal was very good and I have no complaints. Keep up the good work. read more
