IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES, please consider a different restaurant. The server absolutely did not take it seriously and I'd even argue went out of his way to ignore mine.
This visit was in April; my hope is that they have made changes since, but who really knows, as the owner and manager neglected to ever return my call after the fact. The servers NEED to be trained better, or at least trained to PRETEND as though they care.
I am allergic to soy. Not a preference, not a sensitivity. Allergic. This is rather inconvenient, and sometimes difficult/annoying to maneuver, especially in vegan/vegetarian food (soy protein, edamame, tofu, soy milk, etc. etc.)
I am also acutely aware it is *my* responsibility to make sure what I'm putting in my mouth is not an allergen. When you go to a restaurant, though, you are putting that trust into other peoples' hands, but it was clear from this visit our server did NOT take it seriously, nor seemingly care at all. Therefore, I cannot in good faith recommend this place, though it was delicious, because of our experience.
Due diligence: a friend and I were on a long walk and decided to pop in during an off-time to check out the menu for a planned group dinner. She really wanted to check GM out. The owner came out and was quite friendly, and assured us there were plenty of options that did not contain soy. Yay!
A week later, six of us arrived and were seated promptly on the back patio. They were a little busy, but not all tables were full. I immediately let our server know I'm allergic to soy, and that we had spoken with the owner the week prior, but wanted to make sure he was aware, too. He seemingly acknowledged it, and I assumed he "got it." We all ordered cocktails and decided on a bunch of different appetizers to share.
A few of the items ordered are typically made with soy, but the server did not point that out at all. So, I asked him about each dish before he left our table to put in the order, and he said he would find out if they had soy or not. I'm not going to dictate what the rest of our party ate! But when each item arrived, he would just try to leave the food on the table and walk away. So, for my own safety, I had to ask him about each item as it came out. "Does this have soy? Does this?" Every time, he looked mildly surprised I asked, as though we had not covered it when we sat down or the other times something came out! But each time, I'd ask in a friendly way and with a smile, and then would wait patiently while everyone else ate, as he'd go and check (to his credit, as he didn't just guess) and come back and report that yes, it *did* have soy. This happened for everything that came out, and as our one friend fancies himself a "foodie" (ugh, I know lol), that was quite a bit of grub.
So imagine, instead of just enjoying your friends and a meal, having to stop and remind/ask your server literally every single time something came out (+ six times) if something has an allergen in it, then wait until they came back while everyone else awkwardly went on eating. I felt annoying to everyone around us (and to other diners who may have heard) and obnoxious, and it was stressing me out to near-tears that I had to keep having to ask over and over again with a server who clearly was *not getting it,* no matter how many times I (or my friends) asked!
Our main meals came out. Well, except mine. I'd ordered a veggie burger, exactly how written in menu, but it was nowhere to be seen for reasons that were never made clear (I have a guess...) The server avoided my eye, until one friend asked about my food. It arrived after everyone else was more than halfway finished with theirs, but had this "cheese" on it. I took a small bite and felt my mouth go tingly/puffy. The taste also was...off. So once again (#7??) I flagged down the waiter and asked if the cheese was made of soy. He replied he did not know, but would find out. Like...??? He eventually came back and said it did. At this point, I was starting to feel super sick and don't remember exactly what was discussed, except that he was too casual and had no sense of concern or urgency or even the TINIEST bit of problem-solving. He just walked off!
One friend was furious with this response, and went to find a manager. He said the server tried to stop him from talking with another server, and kept interrupting him. I wasn't there, so I don't know really, but the manager came out, and was super apologetic & acted concerned. He gave me his phone # and asked me to call when I felt better so I could tell him what happened; we left promptly after. The rest of the night was awful, but no hospital was needed ...this time.
The manager never called back.
I don't understand why the server did not take this seriously, as allergies *are* serious. I don't expect those who don't have them to truly understand what it's like, but it's irresponsible to not have trained staff who at the very least has situational awareness. read more
