Came here based on a delicious meal I had over 10 years ago. Let me start by saying this review is based on service! I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese. Maybe it was the fact I was alone I got no service or any attention? When I first ordered it it came out dry with no sauce. I told my server and she replaced for $28 I want it to be made right. When it came out the second time it was spot on! Sad to say I was never offered bread or a refill on my drink, or even the usual how is everything. I would've ordered an app had I been asked. Great bar, large, with lots of amazing sounding selections. Food was great, got some specials (fig flatbread pizza and street corn dip) and the pastrami sandwich. Everything was very good, service was great. Only thing I wasn't thrilled about was the menu was way too big to have everything fresh (plus got a full page of specials!), especially in the winter. They could also use more beer on draft, but my Guinness tasted proper. The street corn dip seemed reheated, and would assume some other things may be. However, don't let this dissuade you from going, it is certainly not microwave food and was delicious. Will be returning to this very cool bar! read more

This place was not good. I should have asked my family to leave as soon as we walked in and it smelled of dirty mop water. The first two tables we walked by to seat ourselves were covered with flies and they didn't leave to make our meal more enjoyable. The food was mediocre, service was worse - slow. My daughter got French dip which was ok, her boyfriend got steak tips - also ok though the mashed potatoes that came with it were very dry. I got lobster tacos, not great and the soft flour taco shells were crunchy. We had almost finished eating by the time the fourth member of our party got their fried fish and clam combo. How do steak tips come out before fried seafood? Place wasn't particularly busy either. Between the flies and a staff member coming over to try and change the tv channel above our heads without acknowledging we were sitting there, and standing 6 inches from us for five minutes during our meal, it wasn't all that pleasant of an outing. Gateway's food and charm has always been solid. But I need to update my review because they are embracing coronavirus safety precautions. I hate to brag that they took my name and number, but this is actually the first location that we haven't had a reservation that did that. The hostess stand was moved to limit cross contamination, and tables I previously sat at were blocked with caution tape as not being safe. I was halfway through lunch with hubs and my parents when it hit me...all but one side of the booth had a six foot wall. Not a plastic barrier. A legit wall. Frankly, it allowed my parents and husband a better ability to hear, and it kept out the other noise. My parents are both recent cancer survivors, and I could not have felt safer. I will begin saying that I go out of my way to look for the good in an establishment (being in the business for well over 40 years). Serves us right for trying to go a little later to avoid the crowds, 7:30pm was apparently too late for an enjoyable dinner. First off, out of the 2 apps we wanted to try (Cowboy Bites & Mexican Street Corn Dip), no onion rings, green beans or baked potatoes. Ended up with plain ole Mozzarella sticks (fryer oil was past its life, and it tasted like it). Coconut chicken is not as described as there was no coconut to be found. The Bang Bang shrimp sauce was very oily. BBQ chicken mac and cheese was pretty good (AFTER it came out as Buffalo chicken mac & cheese and took 20+ minutes to refire it). The Lobster Roll and Lobster Roll croissant were very good (although the croissant was way over toasted). Our waitress tried very hard, but when your kitchen staff is not up to par, it is hard to be on the front line... Maybe it was because it was Sunday evening, but I would recommend trying somewhere else. With this establishment "unclaimed", the owner won't see any of the comments (which is the only way you can improve). read more

So I live in Winthrop and I come into town to treat my elderly parents to a dinner on a quarterly basis. We have been to the Gateway Tavern many many times over the past three years. The first several times were great experiences . Great food, properly prepared, fast and friendly service, drinks properly mixed and served at a decent time even when they are jammed packed busy. Over the next several visits there have been drops in the quality of the experience. Beef cooked differently than requested, the kitchen sending out items way slower. Little things. Our Latest visit 8/3/19 Was a disaster. Of our Party of four. 3 of us had multiple things wrong. My wife and my father both ordered the clam chowder, both reported them to be stone cold. They asked our waitress to please replace them.... they came back the same temperature as before and they sent the chowders back. I was Served a side plate with dried cheese and chunks of black olive stuck on it. The waitress apologized and got me another. My crock of French onion soup was a crock of shit. The onions were over cooked and disintegrating. The cheese was broken and also disintegrating into little pieces like when styrofoam falls apart. Our entrees were terrible. My wife's Lazy man's lobster was swimming in a puddle of unidentifiable orange liquid and unappetizing. My twin lobster hot dogs were minced to hell and very far from fresh. My Fathers Fish n chips .... the batter on the fish was brown and my father reported that it tasted like crap. It looked as over cooked on the inside as it appeared on the outside. The Waitress was embarrassed about all the errors the kitchen made.. we reassured her that she did a grand job and she did.... she was the reason I'm not giving this sinking ship a 1 Star review. Well the manager was decent enough to take off the items that sucked and offered free desert for which my wife was the only one that took one. Looking for a Great "Chicken Bacon Ranch" Salad? This one is the best I have had. Shaved carrots in one corner, cucumbers in one corner, red onions in one corner, grape tomatoes in the fourth corner. Then the huge pule of fresh salad in the middle. Lots of chunks of tender chicken to top it off! But wait the surprise is the delicious bacon pieces on the underside. Pour on the dressing and mix it up. So filling you can split this or take half home (ask for box and put salad in box before adding dressing and ask for another dressing) Definitely A+ read more

The Gateway used to have the most excellent food, portions are still large, however I found the quality of the food has gone down quite a bit in the last year or so... Not sure exactly when it went down but maybe it's been two years now. It was my favorite local place to go and eat and I took everyone from out of town there and they loved it. Unfortunately I don't take everyone there now because usually there's some thing in the course of the meal that is disappointing if not more than one thing. We had a poor experience tonight. I get it, it's Friday night, it's busy. The service was not good, though lots of staff around. It took well over an hour for our food to come out. People who had arrived after us came and went at 2 tables nearby. There were 5 of us only 3 were initially served and 3 of these meals were cold. I would normally have just dealt with it but cold fried clams are terrible do I sent them back. My children were lucky enough to receive hot food though by the time it arrived my husband had finished his meal and I still waited quite some time for my remake. The clams were a little warmer on the second plate but still not great. The fries do do (though not the fries I ordered, I asked for sweet potato fries). The waitress did bring a separate basket which arrived after I was done eating. She did take 1 meal off the bill for the overall poor experience but truth be told- we won't be back. A lot could have gone better and $156 for so so food is not ok with so many other great choices nearby. read more

We have been going to the Gateway Tavern for many many years. I can now say we are really enjoying the new menu because now the food is spot on. I am sure the chef is also happier! The staff there has been there for years and are pleasant. They care. Sometimes we sit outdoors and enjoy it when the weather is nice so is the view. Despite the 3 1/2 Star reviews. I always like to give places the benefit of the doubt. I never like to get on here to complain ever. But the food here is so not good. It was one of those WTF Moments Actually! We ordered the Poutine first. It was the best thing yet still not good...How can you jack that up? Any-who? The cheese was slightly melted & good but it so lacked gravy....so much so, that we Asked for gravy on the side. Our Waitress got it no problem but it came thick with cornstarch clumps In it! We also ordered Beef Taco sliders...When I think sliders I think small...These were full size nothing but nasty tasting ground meat on a perfectly toasted taco shell. So Disappointing!! It Said it came with seasoned beef....It Tasted like Pre Boiled then Broiled Hamburger that totally missed any kind of seasoning.? Unfortunately the Mac Attack pizza could have been better had the Hamburger not had that same pre boiled then broiled unseasoned lack of flavor. I ordered three salads from here last weekend for takeout. 2 Caesar salads with the grilled seafood trio for each and one chicken bacon ranch salad. The grilled seafood trio was perfectly cooked and went very well with the Caesar salad. The chicken bacon ranch was just as tasty. I give The gateway tavern two stars because the service was bad but the food was good, not great. The Problem with this service was that the it took an hour to get the food and people that sat down after Us got their entrées before us, . The waitress was nice and friendly. The Place was good for kids and adults. And it had outdoor seating. If you want to try gateway tavern make sure you give yourself plenty of time to eat there because if it is busy it might take a while for your food to get to your table. If my family and I go back we want to try the mini golf and the ice cream across the street. read more

So, I walked in without much of an expectation. I'd gone to a failed food truck festival down the road, apparently others had too because the place was full. The menu was extensive and a specials page increased the list of choices. The decor was charming, think 80s NH lakeside inn. The waitress was outstanding and apologized in advance for slow kitchen time due to the unexpected rush (totally understandable). The apps (bread and potstickers) worked well for our party of 5. I've been to the Gateway Tavern before, and had an excellent experience with food and service. This was not the case last night. When hastily seated, we ordered the cauliflower as an appetizer, which itself was really good. We had to wait 10 minutes to eat it though, as we had no utensils and it took thy long for them to come. Unfortunately, I found a hair in one of my cauliflower bites. There was also fries mixed in with the cauliflower (not suppose to be a part of the appetizer). To add to the experience, the coleslaw was old and had gone bad and smelt horrible, so a dish had to be sent back after waiting over 50 minutes for our meals. The waitress was kind, and we informed her of the issues, in hopes that they will reach management/the kitchen staff. GT has a lot of potential, but I won't be returning for a while. read more

A regular place for dinner when we are in Wareham. The place is always very busy and expect that parking lot to be full if you come during prime time. The portions are large on the varied menu. I just called to make a reservation, but they only accept reservations for parties of 6 or more. The average wait time is 30 mins on a Friday, so I have to plan on at least a 30 minute wait to be seated? Why wouldn't you just offer reservations- or call ahead seating. Not too happy with my experience at gateway tavern. The food was meh. Nothing great. Didn't appear to be as fresh as the menu brags, however it was fine. The service was terrible. Waitress forgot drinks, brought the wrong wine and still charged for the premium. She brought out salads without dressing or silverware, finally brought dressing to have to wait for silverware. We asked for things and were ignored, after leaving a 10% tip for poor service, the waitress had the audacity to ask us if that was really her tip. Maybe try a notepad and you won't forget so much. Also, the bar should steam the glasses. I'm not sure if it was grime, or just the dishwasher needed to refresh it's water softener, but my glass was sticky and cloudy. read more
