Utterly disappointing. Went 6/7/21 for the first time since covid. First round of drinks were good. Apps came and coconut shrimp was raw. Stuffed zucchini blossoms were ok. Second drinks were ok except for a gasoline mojito. Apology shrimp arrived to table burnt. I did not eat them. Dinner arrived after a 45 mins lapse between appetizers. My whole belly clam dish was served room temp with VERY underdone fries. There were 4 whole belly clams plus lots of scrap batter in the entire 25.99$ dish. I will definitely not be returning this season. As someone who lives in town and in the past has frequented the establishment the decline in quality is very apparent and disappointing. read more

We have lived here for over 20 years and have been to this restaurant many times. Tonight was the worst experience I have had in many many years. Food was very poor and the service was worse. Swordfish was burned, and tuna was limp. Nobody asked why our food was uneaten and I had to wander around to find someone to take our money. Do not go! I will never go back. read more

Gateway was such a great experience! I had some doubts going in because there was a line to be seated at prime time on a Friday night, but all went well as we were seated in about 10 minutes. The menu is extensive - it's basically a book - but everything we tried was delicious! The truffle fries were perfectly crispy, my margarita was amazing (and huge!!), and my salmon main course was perfectly flaky and big enough to take home leftovers. The only slightly negative thing I have to say is that the service was slow - everyone was perfectly friendly and accommodating, but it took us about 2.5 hours to eat our complete meal, so if you're in a hurry this may not be the best place to go; we had nothing but time so that really wasn't an issue during my visit. This was my first experience at Gateway and I hope it's not my last - I can't wait to go back! read more

Finally feeling compelled to write a review of the Gateway. The food has always been satisfactory, and the portions over- the- top huge..... as in enough left over for 2 additional meals. However, I have a couple of suggestions. First, some strategically placed acoustic tiles on the walls and ceilings to absorb some of the NOISE would be helpful. Honestly, because of all the hard surfaces, patrons must yell to be heard over all the other yelling patrons, and it just escalates. Also helpful would be a memo to the very efficient and friendly wait staff to *gently* place the cleared dishes into the bus pans. The repeated crashing of plates and cutlery on top of all the yelling can make it simply TOO. LOUD. read more

Stopped in for lunch with a work colleague and ordered the lobster roll which was claimed on the menu as being the largest in the area. It was quite large and was filled with both claw and tail meat that was not overdressed and came on a fresh roll over cisp lettuce. The sandwich also came with crispy fries that I doused with vinegar and some slaw. A bit pricey but it was very fresh and large. read more

I have been going to the Gateway for years and the food was always constantly good but my last few visits have been absolutely horrible. My last visit I can say was the worst by far and I will not be returning. The food that was brought to my family and me was old and cold and had to be sent back after waiting a long time for it to come out and it wasn't even busy. I won't even get into how bad the food was. Also The waitstaff was paying more attention to a friends baby instead of the customers as well. As a side note the same mentioned baby was changed on the table top that people eat off of and none of the staff even stopped them from doing it! Last thing I want to see is a crappy diaper being changed in front of me while I am going to eat. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else to eat and had great food and service, again I will never go back to the Gateway and it's a shame that it has gotten as bad as it is now. read more

This place has a lot of potential. Great friendly service and an extensive menu. We visited for some take out on the way home from a meeting. While we waited for our food we sat at the bar. Not much on draft but they had clown shoes in a can which made hubby happy, me I went for the pumkin beer with a rim. They may even do live music on weekends. I ordered the sugar cane shrimp, hubby ordered a burger. The food on the menu sounded amazing. However the description did not hold true. It was like opening a box of a microwave dinner and being like"this is nothing like the box". Where was the vegetable in the risotto, the fig sauce, it totally lacked the flavor? The burger was also meh, or so said hubby.. Overall to much money for mediocre food. read more

Stopped for lunch on the way home from the Cape. Should have kept driving. My wife ordered chili, which was quite good, and the blue cheese salad, which was huge. No complaints with either. I ordered a blue cheese burger. The chili came out right away. And the we sat. And sat. And sat. It took more than a half hour for the burger and salad to arrive. I had ordered the burger medium. When I bit into it, it crunched. I informed the waitress and she had another cooked for me. When she brought the replacement, the burger was twice the diameter of the last one, and when I bit into it, it was practically raw. They had obviously rushed it out of the kitchen. My advice if you're driving by: keep driving. read more

This was my favorite place to go for dinner but the quality has been going down for awhile now and after many chances to redeem themselves I think we need a break. Service is usually great. It's a busy loud place depending on when you go. The drinks are good usually. But the food lately, the way they can bring stuff to the table that obviously shouldn't have been served. It's been charred crispy burgers that were ordered medium, fish and chips that were clearly left in too long and shouldn't have gone out, to seafood platters that were so overdone it was not edible. We aren't the type to complain and send food back but when the waitresses know what they brought over and see you haven't eaten more than a couple of bites, they should correct it without you having to be that person. I would loved to have put no stars but not an option. I'd like to point out I didn't actually get to eat here because upon entering, there were no signs to tell me where to go. Has anyone else noticed? What is going on with the change in the quality/execution of the food? The last 3 times here were complete fails. The first fail was the nachos. The plate was a mess with chips falling off the plate, all the toppings on one side, and very little chili even after asking for extra and not getting extra. Then the fish tacos (once our favorite go to) that turned out to be over battered, taco shells too crispy. The last visit the fish tacos were gummy, not the light crispy fish we were used to, with a big blob of salsa on top. Who does that? Salsa is always served on the side. Moving on to the salad with steak tips. In the past the garden salad was always a fresh crispy mix of greens.This time it consisted of mostly white romaine rinds. The steak tips were small cubes, medium well and not medium rare as I requested. It's apparent the quality and execution of the food has declined while the prices have increased. We now think twice about making the trip out to Wareham. read more

Avoid the Gateway Tavern if you can. This is my first ever review but I felt compelled to educate everyone. My family and I live in the area and wanted to try this restaurant. We also own rental properties and like to recommend our favorite local food establishments. Unfortunately we will never go back. The nachos took at least 40 minutes to arrive and when the did, they were completely burnt. Do you have any quality control? They never should have left the kitchen. The second batch were undercooked and the cheese was not completely melted. My daughter order fish and chips and the fish was mediocre and fries completely soggy. My 15 Yr old son who will eat anything ordered short rib mac and cheese and ate about 5 bites. He said it had no flavor and was gross. My wife ordered seared tuna and the kitchen obviously used dull knives to slice it and it looked like it was butchered. There was no sear it looked like a piece of tuna dipped in sesame seeds. I ordered a Cobb salad and they brought the wrong dressing. Not the end of the world but just frustrating. The server kept apologizing and I would have normally asked for management but I just wanted out. This was a complete waste of $150. read more

The food was mediocre when i went, nothing special. Standard fare. Its the kind of food you can really get anywhere in the area. Even worse is that their van tried to kill me on the highway. A man driving it cut right in front of me and while I was honking he didnt even flinch or try to stop. He then gave ME the finger. Not a smart choice when driving around with your BUSINESS NAME on the side of the van. Gateway never disappoints. It's pretty busy every time I go, but I've never had to wait. All of their food is very good and their portions are super large. I always wind up taking home more than 1/2 of my plate. I order buffalo chicken mac and cheese most of the time (not sure if it's even actually on the menu, but they will make it for you) and it's probably the best I've ever had. They are a little pricey, but nothing outrageous and no higher than any other restaurant similar to them. If you're looking for somewhere to eat in Wareham, go to Gateway! read more

A local favorite for myself and my family. Great family place which is usually overflowing with locals. Great salads, good seafood, great service. Ask for their zucchini fries which aren't often on the menu but are delicious. Great walnut chicken salad. It's always close to the top of the list if we are going out to eat in Wareham/Marion area. Oh, where do I start? My wife and I have been here once before, and I thought it was great. Had I written a review after the first visit I would have given them 4 stars. Not this time. We were seated on the deck fairly quickly. Unfortunately, we had to wait another 10 to 15 minutes before a waitress bothered to stop at the table. Our daughter noticed that another table had been seated after, but waited on, before us. When the waitress arrived we were able to give her our drink, app and dinner choices all in one shot. The two drinks that we ordered arrived in two different trips. First delivery was my daughter's soda and an apology for having to wait for our mixed drink (because the bartender was "swamped"). A couple of minutes later our "Porch Pounder (for two)" showed up. That was the highlight of the meal! I could have downed another one of those myself, but I don't think my wife would have appreciated it. To the food... The complimentary bread and oil was good. Unfortunately, I had to ask for it. The fried dill pickle chips appetizer was tasty. My wife's seafood casserole thingy was good. No complaint with that. My burger however, was overcooked and the french fries were at room temperature. I don't ask for much in life, but I do like my burgers medium rare and my french fries hot and crispy. Oh yeah, how about that mayo I ordered with the burger? I shouldn't have to ask twice. So now I'm a little bit ticked off between the poor service and ill prepared food. What really got my goat was the walnut chicken salad that my daughter ordered. The salad comes with apple slices in it. But then my daughter says "Dad, my apple slices have the stickers on them". Does that mean somebody washed and sliced the apple but just didn't notice the sticker, or did they even bother to wash the apple before slicing and missing the sticker? Needless to say I was not pleased with the evening. If I average the 4 star visit with the 1 star, they get a 2.5. But I am taking the half star for lack of consistency. I came here with a group of 25 people one Sunday around 8pm. We were having a get together for a coworker that had left our job and we were showing them our appreciation. The Gateway was very helpful in allowing us to fill up their back dining room with a bunch of loud nerdy booksellers from a local bookstore. I was very pleased with the menu the Gateway provided. Lots to choose from. Typical pub-style food and seafood. I decided to be boring and go with a hamburger and fries, but it was juicy and very tasty. The waitresses were quick and friendly with serving our two large tables. Although I only came here once (at night), and I also came at the beginning of the winter, I didn't really realize the restaurant sat on a little river as the other review had said. I'm sure it's probably pleasant to sit outside, but just as fun indoors near the bar. They even have some of those silly bar games to waste your money on like Keno. I would gladly return to the Gateway, and I hope I can make it back there soon to try some other things on the menu. read more

Not sure how the food tastes and I probably never will, the prices don't match the venue. $25 steaks? The average price for a meal on the menu is around $14?! That's a bit much for the atmosphere. I'm not cheap by any means but compared to places similar to this one is very over priced. read more

After a disappointing dinner at the nearby Mike's Restaurant in Fairhaven (see my review), my friend and I decided to try out this restaurant. It was much better, but really nothing special. We were served great bread with olive oil and real garlic. Our appetizer of stuffed quahogs was okay. It tasted more bread than quahog. We also had fried eggplants which were sinfully delicious. Our entrees were good. My dinner companion finished her lobster. I had grilled tuna with Asian flavored vegetables. The vegetables were way too greasy for me so I left most of it on my plate. The tuna was cooked well and was tasty. I would come back here the next time I was in the area. read more

I had the pleasure of dining here for lunch Friday afternoon 7/22/16 with a dining companion. We had the good fortune to arrive around 1:30pm for a late lunch and were seated outside. It was a nice sunny day on their 11 table deck with a beautiful breeze coming off of the water. Our waitress Brittany was helpful in getting us to zero in on choices. Brittany explained the gold rush sauce for the wings a good choice of honey mustard, sweet, with a little zing. We ordered those to start, a saald with walnuts, and chicken, two waters, a scorpion bowl for two, and a cape cod reuben which is fried haddock, swiss cheese, thousand island dressing, and cole slaw. We opted for both the dressing and cole slaw on the side. We swapped out the french fries for eggplant fries. The eggplant fries had no skin were lightly battered and were devoured. The sandwich, salad, and wings were awesome. The one thing is that for a scorpion bowl Gateway didn't have the long straws. We did improvise and put two straws together. Brittany again was awesome with napkins, water, a to- go box and just adding to a great experience. I will definitely be returning to this hidden jewel. read more

Definently a local spot and seems like it would be a good place when the weather is warmer so you can sit out on the outside deck. Overall, service was friendly and I enjoyed my meal. After a longer than expected wait on a Monday night we were finally seated which was a little confusing as there was plenty of cleared, empty tables available. The servings were all huge. We started with truffle fries that were really good. We also ordered a fish & fritter special. The fish was good, but the fritters had no flavor or any noticable chourico. The food has always been good..and the service is ok too. It does tend to get very loud and not a place you sit and have a quiet dinner. The bar has always been packed and loud..this is a locals place and people come and get bar seats and never leave. I'd go back for lunch but dinner on a Thursday night had Trivia Night and it was so loud our dinner guests couldn't hear us at the table! THe back room is kinda cool and overlooks the marsh. I recommend lunch here as it's quieter but the food at dinner has always been good. Large portions and good service. Just don't go here for a romantic dinner!! read more

Dont judge a book by its cover. Honestly this place looks like an ordinary tavern. I was expecting buffalo wings & burgers. But what a fantastic surprise when I looked at their menu--- My girlfriends had bookblub here because the menu is so fun. To all you "FOODIES" out there- you should try this place. The menu is out of this world. From Lobster blue cheese burgers to unthnkable mouthwatering combinations. It takes at least 20 minutes to figure out what you want (I like that). Our service last night was superb. The clam chowder was the best I had all summer. My husband ordered steak (cooked perfect) I had muscles mozzambique, or something like that-- yummmy. SO good & the portions were huge. I had a nice take home box. They do have a nice outside patio seating area overlooking the water - very nice but we didnt want to wait for a table there. Let me start with the good, the food. Everything we had was 4/5. We had a party of eight adults and three under 3. We were seated on the back deck. No screens. Plenty of foul smells from the swamp back there. Also, plenty of biting bugs. And not to be outdone by the slow service. Not sure if it was the kitchen or the waitress but not warm food and not refilled drinks leads me to believe the latter. read more
