Albeit the location isn't the greatest, but First Post brings life to the East end again, this place is worth the drive from just about anywhere. The food is quite possibly the best in York, presentation to match, service is just as impressive, and the restaurant itself is a unique gem that could easily be considered a must-see! Let's hope it gets some much-needed support from other up and comers on this side of town, I'm pulling for this place.. date night brownie points or an upscale brunch with a laid back feel, First Post is perfect all around!! read more

Second time here with a large work group. This time was even better than the first. All the food was delicious, service was excellent and fast. Shrimp and grits were out of this world. We were looking forward to returning to The First Post after Covid19. When we were seated, the table was sticky and there were insects crawling on ourside of the window frame as well as flies buzzing around. Our waiter had a very bad attitude and we had to ask for refills. He was so unpleasent that we did not want to ask him for anything extra. We got the cheese and meat appetizer but there was so little food for a charge of $28. The cheese had mold on it and one of the pieces of meat had a greenish brown hue to it. The rest of the meal was only fair and I would probably not reorder it again. You would think after being closed for so long they would have their act together by now. After two brunches we had here recently the impression is very good. The food is something in between Traditional American and New American (I would call it "inventive" American). Everything we tasted so far (Burrata, Gnocchi, Corn and Crab pasta, Crab bisque, Octopus) was huge portion sized, freshly made, VERY tasty and with a unique twist in every dish. The drinks were yummy too. The service was nice, attentive and efficient. The ambiance is interestingly designed in eclectic manner and very cozy. And the value was unbelievably great. Recently dined at The first post for the first time with some family. The restaurant is in a beautifully restored building and very tastefully decorated. We were promptly greeted and seated for our Sunday lunch. Our waiter was very nice but no sense of urgency. He greeted us and gave us water, came back 5 minutes later to take drink order(could've done that when he gave us water), brought drinks back 5 minutes later, leaves again for another 5-10 minutes, then finally comes back to take our food orders... keep in mind the menu is not large at all no need to spread things out so much...we were all familiar with the menu because we had looked it up online before coming. At this point I was very irritated but the food was absolutely fantastic! I ordered the shrimp salad and my husband got the salmon burger. The shrimp were absolutely cooked perfectly and my husband said his salmon burger was excellent! I do not hold the strange service against the restaurant but it is definitely something that needs to be revisited by management. Otherwise this place is great! We will be back! read more

We have been going to the First Post in York since they opened. Finally want to write a review how great this place is. First of all it's rare to find a place that is consistently good. The food is always great large portions great prices. Always terrific dinner specials. Wait staff is always Professional and pleasant. Bar has a great happy hour. If you like Guinness try the Troggs nitro on tap, a fantastic beer. Excellent lunch menu sandwiches burgers salads. Atmosphere is always comfortable. Some things that we've had and would highly recommend.. Cream of crab soup.. onion soup..Fish and chips.. Burgers.. Crabcakes.. pork chop that could probably feed three people. Whenever we are trying to decide where to go eat in York we always end up going back to the First Post. Whenever we don't, we are usually disappointed and wish we had just gone to the First Post..Never disappointed that's why we give it five stars. read more

My husband and I have been wanting to try the first post for a long time and we finally did. We did date night on a Friday evening and expected it to be packed. It was very busy at 630pm and you can't make reservations unless you have a large party so we anticipated a long wait. Parking is ample and they even have a golf cart type shuttle to take you back and forth from far lot. We were told the wait would be 45min so we went to the bar and got seats and had a drink. Bartenders were friendly and made a great blueberry basil mojito for me. After finishing our first drink our table was ready. Our server was nice and attentive. I ordered the ribeye and my husband ordered the filet. Both came out exactly the way we ordered them, medium. Both were delicious but I preferred the ribeye as it has a Demi glaze and mushrooms on top. The mashed potatoes were real that came with my husbands and my Augratin potatoes were delicious. This place is pretty impressive. The bar is massive with lots of decorative woodwork. Wife had octopus appetizer and a salmon salad . She was happy. I had a delicious seafood salad on a butter roll. This review might be hard for some to understand, but in all fairness, read on... Upon arriving to try this place for our first time, I met a couple in the parking lot who had just come out and asked them if this was a restaurant and if so, how the food was. (Asking if it was a restaurant to clarify it as more than Yelp states... "a coffee and tea" place) Their immediate response of not only is this a restaurant, but they just had one of the best meals, especially noting "the best steak" this gentleman ever had! The last thing they said was, "Hurry in there as they're getting pretty busy!" We followed their advice. As it turned out, I ended up holding the door for a few different couples. We stood in the check-in line for a moment and did what those in front of us did... After spelling out our last name, I was handed one of their remote buzzers being told it would be around 20 minutes. So we abruptly headed for the restrooms, having arrived straight from a road trip! On the way to the restrooms, I had noticed several tables for two with place settings waiting for occupation. Bathrooms were nice, clean and well stocked (much different than our previous night at another local establishment that had no TP to be found!) Upon returning to the waiting area, we patiently did as one does in that area. Being a typical man, I started counting down our turn based upon who was initially in line before us (the folks I held the door for coming into the restaurant). This started my hunger's anticipation. Wait...now the people we seen come in after we returned from the restroom are standing at the counter with a flashing remote! Weren't we supposed to be next?! Then we watched more and more latecomers seated ahead of us for an additional half an hour past our initial 20 minutes. Something had to be wrong. I studied our remote wondering if it had maybe gone off while we were in the restroom. Now, as my man tendencies where in full form, I found myself looking for a way to take the buzzer apart, as it just had to be in serious need of being fixed! Eventually, my wife mentioned that I might want to approach the desk and simply ask the question. I did as most other men would do and quietly dismissed her request as that would mean that I wouldn't get the chance to fix the "broken" remote, -saving the day for all who would undoubtedly end up holding that thing for all the tomorrow's to come, all thinking the same thing! Well, without having any "tools" around to help me "fix it", there was only one option... I stood up (following my wife's thought) and approached the desk. Upon arriving to the desk, I asked THE question and made a statement of having watched later arriving folks being seated. This turned out to be "good timing", as I was then assured that we were the very next name on the list! "They were just waiting for the very next available two-top!" Honestly at this point, we began thinking about somewhere else to go. But having all our waiting over with at this point, we begrudgingly decided to stay (after all...the guy in the parking lot raved about this place!) I just wanted to rant about it at that particular moment. We were sat at a table over looking the bar which would normally be a great place to sit, but I was so frustrated by it all that I really wanted to complain to somebody important! When our server approached our table to welcome us, her smile turned to an honest look of concern when I told her my fuss and that I wanted a manager to come to the table. Sharla, quickly soothed us without patronizing us and went to find the owner who happened to be there. Athena, promptly came to our table as the owner and allowed me to express myself; my feelings about the evening so far. She was real, she was genuine and she honestly cared about our experience and expectations. She, along with Sharla, did everything possible to make up for the mistake (an honest mistake as it turned out) The owner asked if we were willing to stay and try their food. And that she was more than willing to reflect it on the final bill. We asked to be moved to a table that was more private so Sharla quickly found us a nice spot out of the crowd. We were a little bummed that by doing this for us, Sharla had to relinquish us into another servers care. We were introduced to Ashley who added to the kindnesses of Athena and Sharla. Bottom line, they were not only humble in their real heartfelt apology, but they also showed us their determination to make it a much better evening than we thought it would be. Not only did Ashley do an amazing job as our server, but Sharla and Athena individually made their way back to our table to check in with us, making sure we were well taken care of; that we were happy with our newly changed experience! This FAR EXCEEDED our expectations (the expectations of a phenomenal restaurant experience) and I now wholeheartedly agree with the previous parking lot review! I went last Sat with my husband for lunch. It wasn't very busy so I didn't have to make a reservation. The buildings have been beautifully restored to look like a salon in the 1800 's. The server took out orders promptly and checked to see if everything was ok. My husband ordered green tea mojitos and their cream of crab soup which were both delicious. I ordered a lamb burger and my hubby a spicy grilled shrimp chopped salad. the lamb burger thick, juicy with the buttered brioche bun was yummy. The shrimp salad had good amount of shrimp in it. Right off the bat, I was really thrilled with the interior of the restaurant. The seating arrangements make for a very intimate dining experience, but if you want more community, you can still choose a spot at the bar. I am always suspicious of restaurants in York, PA because we have a serious lack of good restaurants, but wow, was I surprised! I asked the waitress what was good and she said, "everything," and I laughed (thinking she must be paid to say that), but she wasn't pulling my leg... I ordered the fish and chips, my partner ordered a steak, and his father got Risotto. We also had a sampler of clams and oysters. Absolutely everything was incredible. I am not from the area, so this was a great find. Apparently, it is relatively new. The inside is beautiful - big old wooden bar with balcony seating - kind of dark - very cozy. We have been here several times. The server's are always very friendly and personable. We usually sit at the bar and have great service. I have gotten the wings, the burger, and the gyro, they all well very good. My wife has had the Ahi tuna sandwich and the salad and enjoyed both. I must say she is very picky. Not too crowded early @ 5ish on a Friday seated right away to celebrate our 16th anniversary. Ordered the special steak (med well- med), scallops (wife) and rustic chicken (son). Ordered calamari for appetizers and that was AWESOME!!! The rolls were also delicious. Received my steak and cut the ends then the middle just as the waiter was walking by to check on my steak. He said "that's too cooked". He took it back to get me a new one. My wife loves her scallops and at first thought it was too small but she said it was just the right portion. My son loved his rustic chicken. Waiter came back and told me the steak was well done and told me manager was on his way. Manager came by and apologized for my meal and told me he will discount my steak. Nice!!!! Got my steak and this time it was cooked the way I like it, med-well/med, just the right amount of pink/blood. Ordered creme brûlée and brownies for desserts. Creme brûlée was HUGE!!! My wife and kids loved the brownie. All in all, a good first time visit experience and we'll definitely come back!!!! The only thing that irritated me was the table we sat at, back room at the door (Market st side). My son and daughter kept pushing the table and I had to keep moving it back in place. Celebrated my birthday at The First Post tonight. Our first time there since it opened. Had the scotch eggs for an appetizer. Fantastic!!! Probably too much for just one person, better split. The pork chops were huge and very good. The only somewhat negative is the wait. We had a 70 minute wait but met two wonderful people in the bar and chatted for most of the time.A return visit is definitely in my future. read more

There isnt a lot of options in finer dining in york, first post isnt at the top of my list, to start off the night we had the hummus and tzatziki appetizer, the hummus: something i make almost on a daily basis my self was a total disappointment, for a dish that prides its self on seasoning there was absolutely none to be found in my mashed chickpeas and the overwhelming flavor of too much tahini, i hoped this wouldnt be a theme for the rest of the night but i was wrong. I got a ribeye steak that came with butter greenbeans and potato au gratten. The steak was cooked excellent one of the few saving graces however the potatos once again lacked all seasoning of any kind rendering them simular to cardboard. The greenbeans were so saturated in salted butter to the point that made them an inedible garnish. Now my girlfriend got a shrimp alfredo and im to understand seafood is a speciality of this place. I tasted the shrimp and it was very good yet another item that speaks for its self if the technique is right however the dish as a whole again lacked real seasoning. Just had a pile of pesto in the middle. All together disappointed for a 70$ for 2 meal ive sadly had better at olive garden. Maybe some day fine dining will come to york, but until that happens ill go back to cooking my own food read more

The French Onion Soup is a MUST. I told the waitress their French Onion had just defeated the all-time champion that had been the title holder for over 40 years. In the early 70's, I declared HA Winston's French Onion Soup the best of the best. Winston's was a small regional chain started in Philadelphia, PA by the Spivak brothers (of Electric Factory Concerts fame). I had my first Winston's French Onion at the Bryn Mawr restaurant and it was amazing. Every crock of French Onion that I tried after Winston's (and I've tried MANY) just didn't measure up - until we rolled into The First Post for my grandson's birthday luncheon. The onions were plentiful and well caramelized, the flavor of the cheese melted over the sides was outstanding, the cheeses inside the crock were mixed in perfect harmony with the crouton, and it was presented with lightly battered crispy onion rings on top. Trust me - that soup is "The BOMB" I live about an hour and 15 minutes away and will drive up there just to have the French Onion Soup again. read more
