My boyfriend and I agree, this restaurant has the best food in York. We have been here a couple of times and everything we have ordered has been excellent. The only negative has been the service, honestly, I don't know where they find these servers but we haven't gotten a good one yet. The last time we were in the server was mediocre at best, but the first time the server was terrible. From not bringing bread until asked when he finally showed up with our entrees, to having water spilled all over us and the table, the service leaves a lot of room for improvement. read more

Passing through town a friend treated us to a late lunch at this restaurant which is full of character. The establishment was relatively empty because we stopped in a bit earlier than usual for dinner so it was relatively quiet inside. Past the front entranceway you pass through the 1st dining room which has the bar, high tables and booths. This is an area to hang out for a few hours drinking some beer, watching the games on the big screen and relaxing. I would have liked to hang out in this room, but we were on tight schedule so the hostess lead us to the 2nd, back room which was also very nice and full of character. The menu looks impressive and the prices are relatively fair. The waitress was courteous and explained the specials and was always around when we needed something. I ordered the French onion soup and steak salad. Both dishes arrived and I have no complaints about either. The blue cheese dressing is served on the side, but there are some blue cheese crumbles scattered on top of the salad. The other guests at the table ordered the fish and chips. Bottom line - this seems like a perfect neighborhood restaurant to meet friends, hang out with family, or just have a quiet bite to eat any day of the week. Kudos to The First Post. The wife and I went to The First Post 3691 E. Market St., York, PA 17402 for a late lunch on Tuesday September 26, 2017. This was our first time at 'The First Post' since it opened but had been regulars at the old restaurant 'The Roadhouse' before it went out of business several years ago. The receipt #40005 upon completion of meal showed 3:54 PM. First off, upon trying to enter the restaurant we were met by an older grumpy looking lady cleaning the front entrance door window. One would think she would open the door and invite us in..nope..she continued cleaning the window while staring at us while we waited in the hot sun; not a very pleasant start, just saying. When she was finished cleaning the window we were allowed to enter after which she mumbled something to a male who seated us in an enclosed sun porch encased in windows. I said no, I wish to sit at a booth and not in a hot patio area. He said he needed to ask permission to seat us elsewhere. Really, one would think a restaurant portraying to be high-class would ask if you had a seating preference when checking in but I assume the glass cleaning lady could not do two things at once. He returned and we were seated in a corner booth in the bar area between two floor to ceiling pillars; figured I was being punished but at least it was a booth and the room temperature was cool. Such a beautiful restaurant and all I could look at was two pillars because I was a bad boy and punished by the big bad seating witch. Seriously, the restaurant wasn't even busy, maybe 4-5 tables and 3-4 people at the bar; that's it... Our waiter was named Dave and he was pleasant enough and attentive. We asked for water with lemon and Dave brought us two small glasses and a tall carafe bottle of water with ice; this impressed me. Our order consisted of a starter of Guacamole $9.00, I had a bottle of Yuengling Lager $3.00 and a Ruben $10.00 and the wife had the Post Berger $11.00; each sandwich came with mauia onion chips. We chose not to order French Fries at an additional cost of $2.00 per sandwich. Truthfully for the price fries should have been included with the sandwiches, my opinion. FOOD QUALITY: The Guacamole was disappointing; it was flavorless and came with about 20 tortilla chips although Dave said it's made fresh every morning. Don't waste your money on the Guacamole. The Reuben was served on some type of marbled rye and I appreciated that it was not wet and soggy but truthfully it had very little flavor and I would not recommend it. The best part of the sandwich was the chips which came with the Rueben. The Reuben had minimal meat with very little kraut for the price. Most restaurants around York serve a Rueben with fries $7-9 bucks with twice as much meat and kraut. I tasted the wife's Post Berger; I was not impressed but she enjoyed it. The Post Berger was portrayed to be Certified Angus Beef but tasted like cheap meat found in lower scale restaurants and for the price it was small in diameter and size; it was about the size one would get at a fast food joint when ordering a quarter-pounder; again disappointing. In all fairness the best part of the burger was the bacon. It was a thick apple wood bacon the flavor and taste was awesome. The burger was served on an good tasting roll..but..the meat, not good. If you want fancy and elegance this is the place for you. If you want decent good tasting food, well I recommend going elsewhere. I do not mind paying a little extra, but I do expect when doing so the food will be of better quality, quantity and at least taste good. I guess when the lady made me wait outside in the hot sun while she finished cleaning the door window, I should have walked away...wish I would have, just saying..!!! In closing if you have lots of extra money to spend and you want fancy give it a try. If you are looking for a good meal, go elsewhere... Any thoughts of going back for a evening meal after this experience; not a chance... read more

I have given them a "ton" of business since they opened years ago but I will never return there. My family went "during the day" hoping to celebrate my son's graduation. I realize the party was bigger (9), but we were willing to split tables up. The hostess was the rudest person ever. Clearly didn't want our business. She was focused on us not having a reservation, however we didn't expect to need one during the day (they usually aren't full then) and there was no way of knowing the exact time the graduation would be over. We went here last night for the first time. I had a peach cobbler Martini. It was delicious, but not worth $9 to me. We also had the oysters. They were good and fresh, but I would recommend going on Tuesdays when they're $1 a piece instead of $2 or $2.50. We also had the grilled octopus. That was amazing and I would highly recommend it. My husband got the steak and crab cake entre. It was so delicious! Worth the price in my opinion. I got the scallop entre which was scallops and risotto. It was delicious but too salty for me. A gift from one of the kids for doing their taxes took us out to The First Post, one of our favorite restaurants. I had the Prime Pork Chop as a recommendation from our son and the wife got the BBQ Short Rib. Both were absolutely delicious! My pork chop was almost 2" thick with wonderful flavor down to the bones! The short rib was fall-off the bone tender and the bbq sauce was perfect. Both came with the cheddar grits (which became another favorite for us both!) and another side. Delicious, plentiful (I took part of mine home and just had it for lunch with a salad), and just a classy place. We highly recommend for a special evening out! read more

The menu is good, not great. Honestly, my biggest gripe about this place is the parking lot. I do understand why there aren't parking spaces reserved for carry out patrons. If you order carry out, you should pack a snack to save you from starving when you have to park in the auxiliary lot and make the trek to the restaurant. We ordered calamari, various type of oysters, crab and corn pasta, and two kids meals. Everything was done well and very tasty. I especially recommend the crab and corn pasta, unique recipe and very delicious. The price was not cheap but worth it. Service was a bit slow, but boy was the food on point. I had the burrata to start - delicious fresh cheese, and the roasted veggies to go with it were phenomenal. First I'm only eating brunch because that is what we are here for today. It is so hard to find a place in York that makes a Bloody Mary and an Irish coffee the right way, or without asking you how do you make your Irish coffee. Here the Bloody Mary is not out of the bottle, and the Irish coffee has homemade whip! Might be one of the best ever Irish coffees. As for the Menu, well it gets a 4 Star because it isn't very dynamic, but the food is 3-4 Star range. All and all, a very enjoyable brunch for these two bar flys. read more

Our visit was on a Sunday afternoon. I was expecting it to be busy but pleasantly surprised it wasn't overly busy. I had ordered The new England seafood roll. It was excellent. The wait staff was very attentive and very suggestive on their beer purchases as I said no to a second beer I got one anyway. Everybody else's food at our table was also excellent. Struggling with this review... My husband summed it up pretty well - liked the place better than the food. Beautiful bar and loved the parts of the restaurant we got to see. Hostess was great & the guy that got our drinks & app was awesome. Our actual server took a LONG time to finally get to us. But no worries, we had wine & a Scotch egg app. The wine list was unexpectedly decent. When I Yelped the place, I thought we'd be taking advantage of the solid beer offerings or creative cocktails but loved the chianti. The Scotch egg was good but a little too heavy for me. Not a problem for my husband, though! For dinner, I went with the rock fish & substituted the rice for steamed spinach. The fish was served with the skin on, face up. Pretty well done & had possibly spent a little time being kept warm. I prefer a lighter touch. The veggies were great. Husband had the fish & chips - a huge portion - and finished most of it. The fries were best at the beginning. It the slaw was pretty good. Our son had a NY strip and ate most of it. Skipped on dessert but the options looked good. We were pretty full & very tired. The food served at First Post is nothing exceptional. I have had a much better sandwich at Jimmy Johns. The Freaky Fast people certainly does better in the bread department. The bread holding my turkey gouda together crumbled and seemed at least a day or more old. I said nothing because I was there celebrating someones birthday. I really like First Post. It literally took years to craft the restaurant and the woodwork & furnishings show it. Most of the time I prefer to eat at the bar. Why? In order to be a Bartender at a good establishment you have to be able to multi task, serve good drinks, and be knowledgeable about everything. The bartenders at First Post are superb. My favorite is Keith who has a knack for remembering your name and what you like to drink even if you are only an occasional diner. Try the Saturday brunch menu. What a great experience! We went for our 25th anniversary and had a great time. Our server was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. The food was outstanding. We ended up both ordering the exact same meal: sirloin and crab cake. While the up charge to substitute asparagus for green beans was a bit more than I thought it needed to be, the quality of food was excellent.
