We arrived early at 4:30pm when it was least crowded. The hostess was rather surly and seated us at a table by an interior side door that kept shaking every time someone entered or exited the restaurant front doors. It was socially distant though from other tables so that was a plus but it was an odd location when the restaurant wasn't that crowded. The waitress was very friendly and new to working at The First Post. We enjoyed our discussion with her about the menu although she couldn't give recommendations as she hadn't had the opportunity to try the food yet as they hadn't offered her a tasting. But she could tell us what was most popular from taking orders. The shrimp tempura appetizer was a good choice - the shrimp themselves were cooked perfectly and the dipping sauce and tempura were just right! Excellent texture and flavors and the presentation was really impressive stacked on a volcano of slaw. The slaw flavor itself was a bit of a disappointment - tasted like slaw mixed with teriyaki sauce which was an unappealing flavor. I would still recommend just for the shrimp. Steak Cobb salad was very good. The seasoned steak was flavorful and very tender and the salad was a large portion with mixed greens. The Smith Island cake for dessert was the real thing! It was excellent - it was the true layers of yellow cake with the thin chocolate ganache-like icing and not heavy bakers icing (as some use). I'm from Maryland so I know a good Smith Island cake and I would recommend The First Post. read more

Had dinner here last week. Fired calamari was excellent. Pierogis were good as well. Preferred if they were crispier. Sour cream with bacon and chives was a nice compliment to them. For the main entree I enjoyed the grilled meatloaf with bacon. Highly recommend it. My guest enjoyed the Cioppino (fish stew). He was impressed by the amount of fresh seafood in his dish. We went on a Friday night and didn't make reservations. I highly suggest you do. It was an over an hour and half wait for a table. Luckily we found a spot at the bar. Found this place on a business trip to York. The food was exceptional, and the atmosphere is very New England Tavern. Had the crab balls on the happy hour menu, which were excellent, and had the broiled scallops with and do we sausage grits cake and snow peas. Also excellent. Stopped by for lunch as I was passing through York. I had high hopes given the reviews, but the experience was a let down. I ordered the Crab and Corn Fettuccine from the lunch menu, thinking it would be enough. Nope. I got a small cup of pasta with a few pieces of crab. I literally finished it in three bites. Bottom Line: American comfort food in an immaculately restored historic building. My first impressions of The First Post was that it is huge and it must be one of the nicest places to eat in York. The First Post was recently renovated and I don't think any expense was spared. Front the outside The First Post looks colonial to me but on the inside it felt more Victorian/saloon-ish. Whatever the style is called, the architecture and detailed decorating really give this place a lot of charm. Accompanying the charm of the building is the classy atmosphere. Although The First Post is well appointed it is still kinda casual and definitely comfortable. As for the menu, the fare is American and there is plenty to pick from including soups, salads, apps, sandwiches, steaks and seafood. Despite a diverse menu with lots of delicious options like Filet Mignon and Pan Seared Rock Fish I got an old fashioned cheese burger and it really hit the spot on a cold November night. For those wanting drinks or a small bite, the bar area is large and welcoming. Back to the decor, BF and I sat on the perimeter of the dining room which was made to resemble a wrap around porch. There were windows looking out to the parking lot but also into the main dining room. On the ceiling there was tongue and groove wainscoting and hanging baskets with ferns. Despite being inside, it felt very porch like. Unfortunately with all of those windows it was a bit chilly. Pleasant service. We both had the Caesar salad. My dining partner really liked the barbecued shrimp which topped the salad. The salad itself was mediocre. Fresh lettuce with a bland dressing and finely shredded Parmesan cheese. That is not a Caesar salad. A Caesar salad consists of anchovy dressing, shaved pecorino Romano cheese and olives. When we first moved to york this spot was actually pretty decent. Thought Covid it's slowly gotten worse and worse. The food it just not great. Wow, this spot was a total random Yelp search surprise. I love the remodel decor and the ambiance is totally awesome. We sat in the bar and it was a lot of fun. For a Monday night, the place was jamming and very lively with a great crowd bellying up to the bar and several groups at the surrounding bar tables. I really like the style, very classy. I am an appetizer guy!!!!! The scotch egg (see pic) are to die for, absolutely incredible. The calamari is equally terrific. On the app menu, there was so much I wanted to try....... I did have the french onion soup, it was okay, 5 out of 10, about average, not complaining - but that is my thing, I have had some french onion soup - all over the world and I am very picky......Just sayin'. Next time I will try the crab soup!!! I had the scallops for my main, they were terrific, big and cooked perfectly. The service was great and overall we had a great time!!! read more

I've heard many great things about The First Post so we decided to give it a try at lunchtime. The atmosphere is very comfortable with lots of wooden accents. Our waitress was attentive. We had the calamari to start which was very good and we really liked the sauce on the side. I enjoyed my Post burger, it was juicy and delicious. I would definitely recommend it. My husband got the Nashville Hot chicken sandwich. Now, it wasn't an actual Nashville hot chicken sandwich, more like a fried chicken sandwich with mild aioli. Despite that it was still good, just not what we consider "Nashville hot chicken". All in all we would go back again. I'd like to try their seafood. read more

I visited this restaurant with family and was told that it was fabulous. The sensational food and outstanding service proved the claim to be on the mark, making me wish that I lived in York so I could become a regular customer. The setting is colonial with unique artwork and decorative pieces giving a feel of what you expect from historical Pennsylvania. The restaurant had just introduced a new menu offering a wide selection of delectable choices that appealed en masse to our growing appetites. Our table finally settled on two starters, the Scotch Eggs and Calamari. I was absolutely amazed by the eggs, consisting of an incredibly crispy exterior paired with a perfectly cooked yoke. These were by far the best Scotch Eggs ever and can't be missed. The Calamari was equally as good with a light, fragile batter that literally floated on the top of the calamari with lightness and bite-worthy crispness. Chris, our server soon brought out the freshly baked biscuits with butter, which by themselves could've satisfied me as a meal. Soft and baked to an exact consistency of what real biscuits represent, these babies were hard to put down. When I finally ordered the Chopped Greek Salad, my stomach capacity was being severely tested, but I bowed to my duty to indulge and was happy that I'd done so when the salad arrived. It was a massive portion that was shared with several at our table. Unlike most Greek salads, this dish wasn't drowning in dressing and overly saturated with peppers and other overwhelming veggies. Instead, the crispy lettuce was topped with light tempura strips, cubed meat and lightly intermingled with dark olives and a light dressing that brought forward the savory taste of the combined ingredients. It was a fantastic salad and a consummate balance to the starters. Of course, all this food was accompanied by wonderfully mixed extra dirty martinis with blu cheese olives. During our meal, we were visited by Dennis, the main chef who checked to see if we were enjoying the meal. This was a nice touch, firming up the overall quality of this fine restaurant. The others at the table who ordered the glazed salmon, short ribs, Hibachi steak, and pasta Bolognese joined in consensus to rate the food as the best ever. On our last night in PA, we stayed in a cute town called York. We were lucky enough to find this spot just next door from our hotel. We ordered for carry out to take back to our hotel with us. The architecture and decor inside this place made our jaws drop. It was so cozy and elegant, I wish we had The First Post near us at home! I had the glazed salmon with herbed mashed potatoes and my boyfriend had the Ribeye Steak. We were genuinely blown away. My boyfriend said it was the best steak he's ever had (we are from CA and we've had some amazing steaks). I highly recommend this place to anyone who's looking for an amazing menu serving hot and fresh goodness! read more

The last night in York area and we wanted to have a nice dinner. The First post had some great reviews and we were told that they were a must visit. We walk in and they told us it would be a wait for a table. 10 mins later we get seated and the place was half empty. Ok sure. The server comes right over and she was pleasant. The atmosphere was quaint and comfortable. Our table had crab dip, scotch eggs, pasta, chicken, crab cakes, and a burger. So we had a decent sample of their food. The scotch eggs were very good the dip and the burger were mediocre. The chicken and crab cakes were good as well. The only issue we had was all the waiting. We had to wait for everything an overly long time. It took over a half hour to get the food after ordering. 15 mins to find out the beer we ordered was tapped out. Even the to go boxes ketchup took almost 10 mins. It would have not been that surprising if they were busy. There was even a manager looking guy that walked by several times but never checked on us. Overall atmosphere was great, food was good, service was ok. I probably won't be back. read more
