Honestly, I didn't know this place existed until just a few hours ago. Typically, Harwinton is too far out of my way to go to because I tend not to go north of where I live unless I take a bus towards Hartford or I am going to Watertown. However, my mom had taken me to a renaissance fair in the area and as we left this was the first barbecue option I could find on Yelp. It helped that it was less than 10 minutes from the Ren, so it was a very quick drive. We opted for outdoor seating just because it was visible from where we parked in its plaza. I do like the Thomas Edison theme this restaurant has going on. The decor and the pictures help drive that theme home here which is a nice touch. I did overhear that this restaurant tends to pull people from Bristol and Thomaston which I can understand. They're both fairly close to Harwinton, especially Thomaston who borders this town to the south. The service here is on top of things as well. We had Chrissy who was very friendly, and always willing to answers we had about what we had (I did ask a few questions about the food brought out). While only one other outdoor table was in use upon arrival, about half of them were being served by the end of the meal. So let's start off with the drinks. Mom had the Mango Loco while I had the Campfire Old Fashioned. You also get refills of iced water from a glass jug. I did get to try mom's drink. At its best, it has a very fruity, sweet, refreshing flavor. However, as that drink went on, mom commented that the finish exposed how uneven the Mango Loco was. I took another sip of it at that and it confirmed her thoughts. That sweet mango taste was largely missing in its finish. A good stir after serving would probably help things along, but the taste should always be even if possible. As for my drink, this is where my first question was asked: what bourbon did they use? Turns out, it's made locally in Litchfield. It uses Litchfield Distillery Double Barrel, a 90-proof bourbon. A lot was definitely put on because I noticed a very strong flavor with this one even though I've cooked with much stronger bourbons. It wasn't subtle at all, but the overall drink was still a good drink. The toasted marshmallow was toasted to perfection. For the appetizer, 6-piece grilled chicken wings with their Blackberry BBQ Sauce. The sauce was very tangy, but like the bourbon it was not subtle. Mom did say the chicken was overcooked, but I didn't think so. It was able to come off the bone okay enough. These were good wings, but I think having the blue cheese dip was the star of the dish. The blue cheese dip went along with these wings perfectly, and they even included some celery here as well. For the entrees, mom had the fish and chips while I had the brisket with sides of coleslaw and Mac and cheese. I actually got to try everything here except for the tartar sauce. While mom like her fish, I'm glad she was the one that got it and not me. It was greasy on the bottom, and the bite I tried had some of the breading I couldn't chew from the rest. Like, does breading have bones or something? That's what it felt like from the bite I took. But it was still a juicy fish and the breading had a light crisp to it. Likewise, the fries were also a light crisp upon arrival. Were they the best fries I had ever had from a restaurant? No! But they were competent. Onto my brisket, it had some more of that BBQ sauce from earlier, but this time it complimented the food a fair bit better than it did with the chicken. The brisket was honestly the best food item of this bunch here. It was very tender, and soft. They did a great job with the presentation here I must say. It was as if they were truly locking in when making the brisket. Cole slaw was good, but could use a bit more mayo. The Mac and cheese was also good, the shells professionally cooked, and the cheese was good. If there was one criticism for the Mac and cheese, the cheese pull could be improved. When I went to another restaurant with a friend of mine a few months back, I was able to see an epic cheese pull from their bite. There wasn't much of a cheese pull here. Still the Mac and cheese was a great side dish and I'm glad I went with what I did. Overall, I would say that after averaging the food, the ambiance, and the service, I think a 4 is the appropriate rating for this restaurant. The food had some moments of greatness and was overall a good meal, but I did find with almost everything we were served that there are some improvements that could be made. The service and theming make up for those shortcomings. I wouldn't mind coming back to try other things though. It's a good place all-in-all. read more

The Edison Grill. An Edison namesake branded lunch and dinner spot in Harwington. From the logo to the rug to the signage, it commits to the theme. When you walk in, you are delighted with Red/Black decor and various "vintage" looking signage across the restaurant. The pickup window (maybe added during COVID) is cleverly placed in the waiting room/entrance, where you can also sit to wait for seating. This place gives you an experience visually. So how does the food stack up? Great, actually. I got the BBQ Brisket from the Handhelds section, and my wife ordered the wings from the Starters. Both were delicious. The BBQ brisket comes on a Ciabatta Roll with a pickle and a choice of side. I chose the SLAW! But what a slaw it was. The slaw that I got was oddly sweet, not at all what I was expecting, but ladies and gentlemen, a pleasant surprise indeed. I came, I slaw, I conquered. That's how it goes, right? We also ordered the POT-CHOS off the menu. Yes, kettle baked potato chips topped with Nacho ingredients. Jalapeños on the side for the Mrs. So what's the verdict? Good. Not great. Could have been more cheese. It had bagged lettuce sprinkled on it but would have preferred shredded for easier nacho pickup. And although it says it on the menu (I know), the beer cheese/nacho cheese didn't work for me personally. It gave me ballpark vibes. Yes, to each is own. The two hits and the one miss on the food would of still giving me almost 5 star vibes here as I dig the themed restaurants. I have to imagine that some of the other menu items that I almost chose were easy answers for a 2nd visit (if I'm in the area). I'm giving a slight knock to the rating instead because we were charged for a raspberry ice tea refill after confirming that it was free refills and bringing me the refill before realizing they were mistaken. We all make mistakes, and besides that the service was great. And I'm sure next time the visit will be great and the cool/unique Edison's Grill will sway me to a 5. Why did I wait so long to try this place? I lunch with three friends (we are all old broads). Each of the three (not me, however) are picky and it's hard to find a place that will please this bunch. Someone is always unhappy. Not here! Huzzah! There truly is something for everyone and they bend over backwards to satisfy special requests. "No salt". "Is it spicy?". Blah, blah, blah. The food is consistent. Service friendly and professional. I am the only one drinking and cocktails are great. Have to have a drink to survive. Yes, I am also the driver. So just one drink, sadly. In Litchfield county, and in need of a good burger....props to Yelp Elite, Tricia B, for recommending the Edison Grill. Everything was top shelf, from the service, to the decor, the ambience, the vibe, the food, even the men's room (more on that later). Cordial Katie greeted and seated me, and brought menus. For food, I opted for a mushroom burger, 8 ozs of Angus pure delectable delight. Cooked to perfection, each charbroiled bite reaching a different note - crimini mushrooms, carmelized onions, "greens" and cheddar. And the hint of horseradish gave everything a really good pop. Fries were nice and crispy, just how I ordered. Now, back to the men's room. One of the coolest and cleanest in any restaurant / pub I've ever been in. What a fantastic grille tucked away in cozy Connecticut! It's a bit unassuming located in the plaza but once you enter, you'll know why it's called Edison's. I stopped for lunch with some coworkers who absolutely raved about the place. I had the pretzel crusted chicken breast with a cup of soup. Everything was excellent and well prepared. Today was my 2nd time here. Not as good as the 1st time. Had the shaved steak on ciabatta bread. Also ordered the onion rings. Food was fair. Here's what I didn't like. The bread on the bottom of the sandwich came soggy. Also, the taste of the steak was not to my liking. Also, I was charged $3.50 for the onion rings when onion rings was one of my choices for sides. At least, the waitress could have told me it was extra and if she did, I would not have ordered them. $50 bucks for a lunch for 2 that I wasn't crazy about. Said I wouldn't be back to The Edison Grill again, but I had a GC from the Holidays, so we decided to use it this morning for breakfast. I ordered a sausage & Pepper Jack cheese omelet, and my wife went with a Special, the Banana Bread French Toast. Meals came out after a short wait. My omelet was good -- fluffy & filling. Home fries were red bliss potatoes -- a very nice change of pace from most standard breakfast potatoes. Wife's Banana Bread French Toast was excellent -- extremely tasty ! Coffee was also very good. Service was stellar -- Chrissy was very friendly & attentive. All in all, a much better experience to The Edison Grill than our previous visit a year ago. We found Edison Grill thanks to Yelp and being in the area. Decided to try something new, and the menu sounded quite interesting. We didn't expect how good it ended up being. Very well thought out flavors and perfectly cooked food all around. The staff were very friendly and the service was fast and smooth. I'm not too local and not too far away, but I'll be making a trip back once in a while to keep trying more of the menu. "May the good Lord shine a light on you Warm like the evening sun" (Keith Richards / Mick Jagger) What the inventor of the light bulb has to do with Harwinton, CT is anyone's guess. But there is at least one link between this small town (just 32 square miles) and America's greatest inventor who held nearly 1,100 patents. That link is the Edison Grill, located in a small strip mall on Route 4. There is Edison imagery everywhere -all sorts of old industrial electrical equipment and fixtures, vintage lightbulbs, Edison branded goods, and photos of the man are on the walls of the dining room, bar, counter, and the entry lobby. The building interior is pretty cool too, with a red ceiling (when's the last time you saw one of those?) and exposed round ductwork. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus some nightly specials and a Happy Hour. We went for dinner Saturday night and the place was jammed. The dining room was full, the high tops in the bar were almost full, and the counter (where we ended up) was about half full. By the time we left, there was a line of customers waiting for a table. I went for a bowl of High Voltage Chili ($8), a very good version of beef chili with beans. It was served with Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream, chives and a generous portion of terrific house fried potato chips. It tasted terrific, but had a zero spicy bite to it. I wonder if they could offer it with multiple spice levels in the future? Like a scale of 0 to 5? Anyway, it was delicious and the serving was so big half came home with us. I also went for one of their Big Garden Salads ($8.95), and yeah it sure was big ! It was a giant bowl of Mesculin greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, red onion, roasted peppers & sliced black olives served with one of the most fantastic mustard dressings I ever had. My wife and I shared the salad, and a big portion of it came home with us too. My wife went for an Edison Cheeseburger ($10.75). It was an 8 ounce beauty made with in-house freshly ground beef, served with fries, a pickle, Romaine, tomato, red onion and your choice of cheese. As with the other dishes we ordered, the portion was big and half of it came home too. We went to the dessert menu for a huge slice of coconut cake to have at home. At $9.50, we didn't feel cheated because the slice was so massive it easily made two normal sized slices. It was scrumptious. Our bill, including a $2.95 Club Soda ran $42.70 after tax. It really was a good value because we are going to have a second meal out of what we took home. Have to give two shout-outs -Number one goes to our server Laurie who was a real sweet delight, full of smiles, cheerfulness, and great advice about which dessert to choose. Another day out and we chose the Edison Grill I was hoping for another great experience and I wasn't disappointed, I choose the classic French dip with American Cheese and onions which cost $2 each added on, the Other half had a BBQ Cheese burger with Bacon, now it has been a long time since I moaned over some food and I definitely moaned over the French dip it was that delicious I only ate half of it because I was already getting full, he liked his Burger. I just wish we had some more fries, the coconut cake was absolutely amazing we had to split it because there was no way I could of ate all that by myself. I ordered a drink and never got it but it was on the bill. Had to ask for plates for our wings. As for the food. Yikes. Ordered garlic parm wings. None of the garlic or parm made it on the wings. Just huge clumps of it sitting on top of them. You could literally grab it and put it on your wings with your hands. Maybe that's how they want you to do it. If you don't then you just got naked wings. Also got the French Dip. Very bad. Comes plain. You want cheese? That'll be $1.50. The bread must have been stale cause they tried toasting it but it just made it harder. The meat was super dry as well. Dipping it in the sauce didn't help it. Couldn't even finish it. Nice restaurant with a nice atmosphere but just not a good value for me. We came here twice and the first time is was good, second time was just not up to par. The first thing the host said to us when we walked in the door was that they were out of pancakes and out of eggs Benedict. Pretty annoying considering my boyfriend was dying for Benedict and I don't eat eggs and was hoping for some blueberry pancakes. Oh well. I ordered from their specials menu since pancakes were out of the question and I went with the donut French toast that was paired with candied bacon and Bourbon maple syrup. When I got my food I was not impressed at all. I was under the impression it would be big fluffy triangles of French toast but no. It was ONE single donut cut in half and thrown on the griddle. Needless to say I was not filled from what I ordered. I also was not fond of the syrup, water consistency and had a way to potent of a taste to it. My boyfriend got the corned beef and hash dish and he liked everything but he kept mentioning how salty it was. His home fries were very good however. Maybe it's a Long Island thing or maybe I'm just extra? I just don't know! Lol. Most brunch spots I've been to include a side and a drink for one price but here everything is separate which I don't like. We got a mimosa flight which I think is a creative thing because that is one thing I haven't seen anywhere else. I know they say everything here is made from scratch so that's something nice and I do like the atmosphere here. Stopped by for lunch and I am so pleased I did. The food was exceptional and is now my go to. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was fresh and very delicious. Started with watermelon mojito it was perfect! Had the pretzel it was fresh and the dipping sauce were a delight (honey mustard and cheese). I also had to try the HONEY BOURBON WINGS & WAFFLES loved the crispy crust and the sweetness of the honey. I had the Pretzel Crusted Chicken sandwich which was great but I tried my husband burger it was outstanding. It was the hamburger day special and it had a sweet green sauce it was just delicious. A few days ago my wife and I decided to stop into Edison Grill just to get something to eat, which turned out to be a dining experience. I had the mussels appetizer which was excellent, with a thick nicely seasoned flavorable tomato sauce, even the toast points were nicely seasoned and delicious. Bavarian pretzel-encrusted chicken with a cranberry honey mustard sauce. My wife had cauliflower risotto with cremini mushrooms and perfectly cooked chicken breast. Been here 3 times now and always had a good meal. This trip started out with skillet meatballs which were fantastic. Pretty much a meal in itself. Had a couple bottles of yuengling beer but they do have a small list of tap beers and a full bar as well. Onto the entrees. My wife wasn't that hungry so she had the chili and loved it. My son had the French dip and he can't wait to come back and have it again. I myself had the ribeye steak and it was great. Tried the Edison Grill last night for the first time. The atmosphere is very neat and the menu was concise yet, had a bunch of different options. The service was awesome and food was delicious. We had the "pot-Chos" for an app. They are homemade potato chips dressed like nachos. I also recommend the pretzel crusted chicken. They also had s'mores sweet potato fries on special. Sunday Breakfast not so good. I've been here many times for lunch and dinner and it was generally pretty decent. So we decided to try their Sunday breakfast, which appears to be the only day they serve breakfast. I ordered two eggs with corned beef hash (which on the menu was made to sound like it was made in-house with brisket) home fries and toast. Service was fast enough but I was quickly disappointed. The cubed "home fries" were so overcooked they were totally dried out. They appeared to be from frozen potatoes. The hash was obviously from a can and not even crisped on a grill. Eggs over medium were good but small and the toast was good. My wife's potatoes were just as dried out and shrunken. Her scrambled eggs and bacon were good. Nothing to brag about here. I won't go back for Sunday breakfast and will instead go to a place that specializes in breakfast. It's difficult to mess up breakfast but the Edison Grill managed to accomplish it. read more

This restaurant is great find in an out of the way location. You will see a mix of locals and out of town travelers passing through and all are welcome! The atmosphere is unique with their Thomas Edison theme and tribute. I have been to this restaurant many times and the service is always exceptional with the waitstaff offering helpful advice and attention. The menu is extensive and everything that I have tried never disappointed. I highly recommend any of the numerous burger options. A must try is (1st) the Meat Bulbs, which are truly one of a kind appetizers and on theme with the Edison invention. The (2nd) giant pretzel with mustard and beer cheese is another worth while favorite. Lastly my favorite entree is the pretzel encrusted chicken, it is a great option with fantastic value (salad and plentiful sides).
