Every-damn-thing with those gloves and then proceeded to touch every piece of food that the chef placed on the window - including redistributing the potato chips on two orders, refolding an omelette and wiping a plate with the rag she used to wipe the counter!!! The Echo is a nice brunch place with a classic diner vibe. We went on a Sunday around noon, and only waited about 15 minutes. The service is very quick here as we were greeted with a waiter almost as soon as we sat down. I ordered the Flying Pig Sandwich, a french toast sandwich with bacon, ham, and cheese with a side of fruit ($11). The sandwich came with a generous portion of ham and overall was very good and filling. Great place for the quintessential American breakfast. It's a nice clean diner with some counter seating, booths and tables. Went there mid morning on a Saturday after a late start but was pleasantly surprised that there was no waiting for a table. I think there may be a wait for the Sunday brunch. The staff was extremely welcoming. Our waiter was exceptionally friendly, talkative and attentive and greeted us with a big smile. Our drinks and meals didn't take very long despite it being very busy. The atmosphere was very lively, everyone with a smile, enjoying the company and their meal at the start of the weekend with an optimism of good things to come. I had the corn beef hash with two perfectly cooked eggs. It's definitely from a can, but maybe it's the plebe in me but I've always liked it better than from scratch. They offered a nice selection of breads that comes with meal. The others at my table got the eggs Benedict with goetta (the best version I've tasted of the Cincinnati classic which comes from Gliers), the hot mess and the Western omelette. A co-worker recommended this place for lunch. The business is a diner and appeared welcoming. The staff was nice, no concerns there. I had a taste for breakfast food so I ordered Steph's Sampler. I took it to go. The sampler is 2 eggs, 2 hotcakes, bacon, sausage and a side. I ordered hash browns as my side and got small potatoes instead. The food was mediocre I just didn't like it. I ordered over medium eggs and it was cooked all the way through which it shouldn't be. I did not like the sausage at all. The bacon was just ok. I totally pigged out during my visit here, and no I didn't earn it as I didn't participate in the flying pig! I started with biscuits and gravy. They were good, neither worth raving about. But the gravy was served plentiful. I then had the Oktoberfest omelette which is named this for containing goetta. It was served hot, stuffed with the goetta and cheese but note it has lots of onion as well. Pair the omelet with a side of fruit and cinnamon toast. Yum! Walked in, and was seated immediately. Greeted once, was offered some brunch cocktails. Then again by our server who provided good service and was always near by. Just a note, I classify this place as a diner and is pretty casual. Overall the food is good and reasonably priced. Why haven't I been to The Echo before? One of the fun things about moving back to your hometown after 10+ years is discovering places like The Echo. Yes I'd walked past it multiple times but I'd never gone in. Being the excellent mother I am, I slept in and didn't manage to make my kid breakfast before his soccer practice, so afterwards I told him I'd take him to breakfast. We headed up towards Hyde Park Square, miraculously got parked super easily and walked up The Echo. There was a line out the door so as I told my 6 year old, if this many people are waiting it has to be good. The line was long, but it moved fairly quickly. I say we waited maybe 15-20 minutes max (if you have a small child make it a real brunch and come after 12, it was much quieter after then we noticed). A hostess took us to our two top and gave us our menus. My son went for one hotcake and two sausages from the kid's meal, which comes with a drink. He'd originally wanted 2 hotcakes--these things are HUGE; he loved it but couldn't finish it. One was a wise choice. Like mother, like son--I ordered the Sampler which I also loved but couldn't finish--two eggs, hotcakes, 2 slices of bacon, 2 sausages and I subbed in potato cakes (like a hashbrown patty more than a latke) for grits. This is exactly the kind of place and the kind of food I missed living abroad---traditional diner food in a traditional setting. Not fussy, but clean. Our waitress was so sweet to my son; she told him how polite and good he was at ordering and told us not to rush and stay as long as we liked. What a great find. In Cincy for UC graduation and we stumbled through a few neighborhoods thanks to road closures due to Flying Pig Marathon. Hyde Park offered a lovely neighborhood to walk and chat with others along route to cheer runners. After mass at St Mary's, we kept walking and found Echo. Old school diner charm. We sat at the counter to see the action and hear the line cooks having fun in the kitchen. And they were busy! Attentive staff quickly served up a delicious brunch. I think I may be the only one who feels this way, but I am not a fan of The Echo!! Then again, I also don't like greasy diner food either, so if that is up your alley, feel free to ignore my review. The atmosphere and quintessential Hyde Park diner experience aspect is nice, however the food just isn't any good. Expect that gross fake maple syrup, pancakes that don't really have much flavor, and eggs cooked in either canola or cooking oil (aka also not flavorful). ......That having been said, if you DO go, make sure to avoid Sunday brunch lines, and know that you'll be paying your checks at the register, not at the table. read more

I was in the area after leaving an appointment at Children's Hospital and decided to grab a bite to eat before a second medical appoint. My wife , youngest, and I thought this would be a nice place to try. Honestly, the place is ok and the food is nothing too notable. I had eggs, with biscuits and gravy. I love biscuits and gravy, however this was just way too thick. My child order some hash, which I found to be very dry. It looked like it was straight out of the can and overcooked. My wife had potatoes, eggs, and gravy....it was also average. About the best item we ordered that seemed above average was my youngest's hot chocalate. Stopped in the morning after it snowed heavily to avoid the wait and it was absolutely worth braving the weather! It seemed like there were a few people with the same idea because it slowly started filling up. They have all your classic diner fare, as well as hang over cures and a few unique dishes. The service is amazing and your coffee is never below half full. I tried the Belgium Bird - basically chicken and waffles - and it was top notch! I did make the mistake of not ordering the potato pancakes as my side and instead went with home fries. Fortunately, my friend had the potato pancakes and they were amazing! First time here! Always on the hunt for a new brunch spot and my better half enjoys the Cincinnati specialty known as goetta everywhere we go. We told the staff we were first timers. They gave us great recommendations. I had the hot mess (so good!). And she had the Gliers German greats. Oh Echo. I am ashamed that I have never visited you before... Today I treated my intern to a good old fashioned diner breakfast. I'm not gonna beat around the bush here and do any describin' of the atmosphere because everyone has already done that and because well, it's a pretty classic diner. The menu is actually way larger than I expected and almost everything sounded good. We both agreed that we were in the mood for omelets. I went with the Western which was loaded with onions, green peppers, american cheese and ham. She went with the Aztech which was basically the same thing with sausage and salsa. I originally wanted the Aztech but was afraid the sausage would be too chunky like at most places, but it was actually wasn't. It was chopped up and delicious! The food arrived and we couldn't believe our eyes. The omelets were almost the size of the plate and STUFFED full of steaming hot ingredients. The potatoes were just okay, but let me tell you about this omelet -- I consider myself an omelet connoisseur. It's what I order at every greasy spoon to judge just how greasy and awesome it it. THIS OMELET WAS THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. I repeat, this omelet was the bee's knees. The cat's meow. The bomb dot com (Wait, no. Do people even say that anymore?) Any way you fry it up this thing was amazeballs. Here's what separates the good omelets from the bad ones IMO: + The good ones are thin and light. Basically just a nice little blanket to hold in all the good stuff. - The bad ones are thick and puffy and have very little ingredients. + The good ones have sautéed all the veggies together either in a pan or on a nice greasy griddle so when you cut into it the veggies and meats are cooked and super hot, juicy, and the cheese is melty and you basically die in nirvana when you eat that first bite. - The bad ones have raw veggies, and they are cold when you peel back that disgusting overcooked lump of sad egg blanket. Now I know most of you don't need to know what makes a good omelet from a bad omelet but one of my favorite chefs said that the tell all sign of a good chef is if he/she can cook an omelet. It is one of the most simple dishes out there, but it has to be executed to perfection. A minute under OR over can ruin the texture, a heavy hand can ruin the taste, and impatience can ruin the surprise inside. That chef was Emeril and if he were in Cincinnati, this is where I would take him to get an omelet. read more

My bff lives in Cincinnati, so you would think that I wouldn't have to depend on Yelp when I visit, wrong. I depend in Yelp everywhere I go. When I found this place and mentioned it, she'd been there before and had a good experience. The parking: apparently you can park in the bank parking lot across the street during nonbank hours. I didn't want to risk getting my car towed, so I found curbside parking along the same street as the Echo. My friend said that it was a casual place, so you seat yourself... Wrong! When we started walking to a table, we were graciously told that there was a shortwait list. There was a hostess, apparently there wasn't one when my friend had been here. The hostess was very nice and I explained what my friend had told me and she made conversation, asking where we were from, etc. very pleasant. This place is popular, and there really isn't a waiting area, so people are scrunched together waiting on tables, near the front door area. That's not really a fault of the Echo though, so I won't mark them down for that. Plus, we must've arrived at a good time, because we only waited about 10 minutes for a table. We sat in the side part of the restaurant, near the bathrooms. The service was quick and the food arrived quick too. While I made conversation with the sweet hostess, she mentioned Goetta, and she brought us over a sample as soon as we sat down. I wasn't fond of it, but it was nice to be able to try the local concoction. I ordered a salad and was satisfied, as were all of the others in my party who ordered breakfast items. I won't elaborate on our food, there are enough photos posted. I was looking for a cute, kid friendly spot for a day date with my daughter and decided to take her to The Echo. The food was as great as I remember it. My kiddo scarfed down her pancakes, eggs and bacon. I almost always order the cheeseburger here, because it reminds me of a restaurant I grew up going to in NY. I hear tell that their grits are authentic, Southern-style grits. So there's that. I'm not a huge fan of all brown meals, so I guess I'm a bit biased in that respect. I will say that the place was absolutely busting at the seams with people queuing up out the door and down the street. Like vultures, you have to scan the restaurant for open seats from your place along the glass wall in line. Don't hesitate or you are sure to be poked, prodded, or even sternly admonished. Likewise, if you are found to be nursing a coffee and lost in conversation after finishing your meal, expect purposefully intent stares from those lined up against the wall. That being said, this doesn't seem to deter anyone from doing so. Don't quote me on this, but you may be able to skip the line if you are a single person and happy to grab an open spot at the counter. This, for me, is much like a homey version of Waffle House. The quality is better and you get the home cooked feel. Yet again, it ends up as much the same in the long run for me. It's not what I would consider to be a health conscious place, and heavy brunch covered in what is most likely HFCS based syrup, is not exactly my thing. There really wasn't much for a vegetarian on the menu, and I don't see myself making any effort to return when there are so many other really great options nearby. read more

I love this place so so much. My husband I are regular visitors, coming in once a week no matter what. We frequent the place so much that we are known by name and the servers are surprised when we switch our orders up. I just want to talk about their breakfast for a minute. Holy amazing. Like the sausage gravy is the perfect consistency and seasoned just the way I like it. And it's so good that sometimes I eat it with a spoon (no shame). Also those potato pancakes!!! So crispy and delicious I could eat an entire plate of them! But hands down my favorite is the Eggs Benedict done Echo Style: wth goetta instead of Canadian bacon. You will NOT be disappointed! The hollandaise is sooo decadent and the eggs are perfectly poached every. single. time. I highly recommend sitting at the counter, and the closer you can get to the food window the better. Because sitting there you get the perfect view of what everyone else has ordered and you get to eaves drop on the conversations the cooks are having. It's definitely serious entertainment. The charm, appearance, and friendliness of the Echo seem perhaps unchanged since the mid-20th century. It is a wonderfully preserved American relic from another era. Unfortunately, the Echo's diner food isn't very memorable. I've visited about three times over the years. First visit was about seven years ago: Had some kind of turkey-and-dressing lunch plate that seemed warmed-over and assembled with too many processed elements. That was mediocre enough to keep me away for the next several years. (How do I remember this? Well, this review was started and shelved several years back.) The second time was a simple reuben sandwich a couple of years back: That wasn't bad at all, but nothing worth writing home about, either. Third was a basic eggs-bacon-and-hasbrowns breakfast--again, competently executed and generous in portion, but it's not anything that the average schmoe (e.g., me) couldn't put together at home for a quarter of the cost. The Echo certainly isn't bad. But it sure doesn't do anything to raise the bar food-wise: Very few fresh ingredients and very little creativity evident here, and this is equally reminiscent of the mid (to-late) 20th century. There are plenty of cafes and pubs in town and around the country that have similar menus but serve considerably better food. Also unfortunately, the prices are all too reminiscent of 2015. Honestly, the Echo seems 15 to 20 percent overpriced, almost certainly because of its Hyde Park Square location. Essentially, the Echo is OK, but overrated by its adherents, like much in and around Hyde Park. Get there before 8:30 on weekend mornings if you want to avoid the lines. read more

For starters, hands down the best breakfast I've ever had. Simple but absolutely delicious menu with an array of items to choose from. The pancakes I had were warm and fluffy and just melted in your mouth. The bacon was crisp, eggs were cooked just perfect, and my potatoes were crispy and soft in the middle. My boyfriend ordered the biscuits and gravy. Living in the south we tend to be picky about our biscuits and gravy, let me just say this place knocked it out of the ballpark. This place is just fine. You can get some decent diner food. I met some friends there this morning. You seat your self and luckily we managed to find a table for the five of us. Our waitress wasn't particularly attentive or friendly. But the food was good. Everyone seemed happy with what they ordered. I got the Hot Mess - home fries, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs and cheese without the gravy. It wasn't quite as big as I was expecting - the name Hot Mess screams bold and crazy to me... I think my friend Mr. Y made a tasty choice - eggs, bacon, home fries and a waffle. I was surprised at how small my friend Mr. K's order of French Toast was. Arrive early to avoid the crowds! But let's be honest; the line moves fast and it's worth the wait. This is straight up diner food and brings me back to my Jersey childhood. The PERFECT place for a casual breakfast and probably ideal for a party of fewer than 6 people. They're amazing at accommodating larger parties, but the space is quite small. If you go and there's a wait (which is the most likely scenario), check out the menu. It's pretty extensive! My personal faves were the griddle items - HOLY COW. That Belgian waffle! My friends also got the pancakes, and they seriously looked so fluffy and delicious. They had great healthy items available too, so definitely diet-friendly. It seemed that everything came with a side of toast, but I could be wrong? The orange juice tasted pulpy and fresh. Just how I like it! I got the Go Green Mess, which is a summer seasonal. Egg white + avocado + spinach + zuchinni + feta cheese. Served with salsa, and is seriously just awesome. They source their bread from Breadsmith, also in Hyde Park Square. This place had such good reviews so I just had to try it out. There was a wait out the door and it was about 30 minutes of waiting until I was seated on a Sunday brunchtime. I ordered a mimosa and the club Benedict. My friend ordered Marje's Metabolism Booster. We split had of each meal so we could try a little bit of both meals. They were not terribly priced and very much like traditional diner food and was left full but not disgustingly full where you need to be rolled out. It tasted very good but I probably wouldn't come back on a super busy day. The servers were hustling and really kept up with the rush but our server came to the table maybe twice and I was left with an empty water for about 10 minutes. Even when it's crowded, the seat-yourself atmosphere moves quickly. I typically get some kind of egg sandwich, but opted for something different this past weekend.
