Went here on a little day trip to Ojai and was honestly just intrigued by the Burmese cuisine tag. While I do think it wasn't as Asian flavored as advertised, I do think it isn't a bad spot for brunch. A very cute and nice ambiance and the servers/waiters were great. The tuna melt had very good flavor although I think there could have been more fish. I think the chicken could have been a skip, and pastries were good!
The Dutchess is one of my favorite spots in Ojai! We came for weekend brunch last Saturday and ordered the fried egg sando and the Dutchess breakfast plate. Loved both but the egg sando was AMAZING. I've also been here for dinner before and everything was just as delicious. The beef satay and tandoori chicken were both great, and the coconut chickpea curry was phenomenal. Such a cute, vibey place. Five stars for food and service!
Everything was amazing! We started with the naan, then shared the chickpea curry and biryani, both were fabulous. The biryani was especially impressive; the presentation and flavor were out of this world! The seating is intimate, so if you're a party of two, be prepared to sit fairly close to other guests. There's not a lot of privacy for conversation, but the food absolutely made it worth it.
4.5/5 We ordered the fried chicken sando, breakfast plate, red lentil and rice bowl, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Everything was absolutely delicious--we finished every last bite! The only downside was the wait. It took almost 50 minutes for our food to arrive. Other than that, everything was wonderful. We'll definitely be back and hopefully the food comes out a little faster next time!
My coworker and I came here for breakfast on a September Thursday. We were able to get a table by the windows, although it got busier by the time we were done. The coffee was great as was the Coconut Chia Pudding - $15 - but worth it. So much tastier than what I make at home, made with coconut milk (?) chia, fresh fruit on top, pumpkin seeds, toasted coconut and honey. Really it would have been great to split it, since neither of us could finish the whole bowl. My coworker and I could barely hear each other and maybe we should have gone to the room at the back. They also sell Bonito coffee beans that I bought to take home, the cashier mentioned they can grind them if you want. Free 2 hr. street parking and a nearby free lot. It gets super busy at dinner too.
The Dutchess is massive, with two rooms of seating and a quaint back patio. They're open from breakfast to dinner and as their website says: "This kitchen comes to life at 4am and doesn't shut down until 11:30pm." They do a soft close from 2-5 where they don't serve the food menu but offer drinks, coffee and pastries. We stopped in on the 4th of July and were seated right away. They also have a coffee and pastry counter if you want to grab something to-go. You do not want to miss out on the pastries, and the display sure catches your eye. Along with our main we split a morning bun which was flaky and just the right amount of sweet. As we were walking out I noticed some sandwiches that looked extra tasty as well. We kept it simple and split the Dutchess Breakfast Plate since we had quite a bit of eating planned for the day, but it was more than enough to satiate us alongside the pastry. It comes with these massive, crispy and spiced potatoes, big slabs of Niman Ranch bacon, tomato chutney, thick-cut sourdough toast and two eggs. At $22 this isn't cheap, but the quality is there and I would order this again just for those potatoes. The Burmese Fried Chicken Sando seemed to be the most popular dish and I was jealous as I saw it hitting other tables. I'll just have to come back!
Cute bakery in Ojai that also offers a dinner menu at night. Pro tip: if the bakery line is long, grab a seat at the bar! They'll serve the full menu, including all the bakery items, so you can skip the wait. We visited on a Sunday around 11 p.m., and the place was packed. Service was a little slow because they were so busy, but the food was still worth it. The only letdown was the bakery bagel, it was pre-made and served without being toasted, which was a bit disappointing. The standout dish was definitely the congee. It was incredibly flavorful, comforting, and easily the best thing we ordered. Overall, a great spot, and I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu.
The food here is absolutely AMAZING. The flavors in every dish and drink we got were so unique and delicious. The staff were all extremely friendly and the ambiance is perfect. Would come back here everytime I'm in town
We came in because of all the hype and saw that they have Burmese inspirations. I was a bit underwhelmed. I mean, it's not trying to be an authentic Burmese restaurant. But I was a bit excited. I've had Burmese cuisine in Bagan years ago that left an impression but as I read through the menu, it felt more like trendy spots in LA but with more of Indian / Indonesian fusion. Both dishes were okay. We opted for their popular breakfast item since I guess that's what they're known for. Nothing stood out here, except for the sourdough. The chutney was okay. I mean, it's more or less typical diner food with elevated sourdough bread. As for the other dish, felt like chicken satay from any other place. The coffees were decent though. My wife had her iced latte and I had cold brew. I can't really remember much about the drinks but it was a necessity - it was scorching when we went. The thing about the food here is that it is definitely downtown LA priced while everything else around the area is relatively affordable. Although I don't mind the 4% health tax, it was definitely a surprise to see if charged for even buying a bag of coffee and sourdough plus tax and tip. It gets expensive fast. While service is decent, you're just ordering upfront similar to how it is at any fast food joint, looking for your own seat, and wait for food to be delivered to you while you help yourself to whatever utensils you need, which reminded us of a self-service local joint in our area who has a no tipping policy because of that fact. I honestly don't mind paying extra but the food has to justify it. The ambiance here is cute. Felt like mementos from Bagan mixed with an old hacienda, so you're more or less paying to eat at a cute place and take photos. Do we recommend it? I guess if you want to take guests to a trendy place but otherwise it's just okay. You're definitely here for the ambiance, not the food.
The Dutchess is a unique Burmese meets Central California spot in Ojai that is part bakery and part restaurant. Reservations are highly recommended as tables do tend to fill up fast. Wifey and I stopped by for brunch with a reservation and were seated right away. I got the Spicy Chicken & Scallion Waffles, she got the Chicken Congee, and we shared a Cinnamon Bun. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here and all the staff were very friendly and welcoming.
We stopped by The Dutchess in Ojai for a quick bite for breakfast and it did not disappoint! I ordered a Bloody Mary to drink while waiting in line. The line was long but moves quickly. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant served with a gherkin and everything was absolutely delicious. The croissant was perfectly flaky and buttery, the ham and cheese were flavorful, and the gherkin added the perfect tangy crunch. The Bloody Mary was well-balanced and refreshing but I wish it had celery. The atmosphere was charming, relaxed, and exactly what you'd hope for in Ojai. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. I can't wait to come back and try more from the menu. Highly recommend if you're looking for a great breakfast or brunch spot!
We came here for dinner at a colleague of my wife's recommendation. We did not have reservations, but they still sat us quickly at one of their outside/sidewalk tables. The sidewalk tables are comfortable and the ambiance casual. Service was efficient and friendly. They have an extensive wine list, but we stuck with water. It seems the menu is prepared daily, as the cover of the paper menu had today's date on it. Dishes were a combination of traditional and innovative, with many vegan and gluten free options. We chose the Coconut Chickpea Curry, Zuckerman Farms Asparagus & Snap Peas and Wok Fired Beef Satay. The dishes were visually appealing, served hot, and brought to our table as they came out of the kitchen. You can tell they use fresh, quality ingredients and combine them in a sophisticated way. All good... except that I found the Asparagus and Satay dish overbearingly salty. Unfortunately, the saltiness overpowered all flavors in these two dishes.
This was our first time in. It's obviously a popular spot so timing is everything. Today we got lucky, the place filled up quickly after arriving (8:45am). We had a large party with strollers and were able to find spots in the billiards room. The patio looked nice too. Everyone in our party decided to go with options from the case. I also tried the golden latte. Turmeric taste came through well and overall a good drink. Everything was delicious from the case. Their tomato pastries are so good sleep on those. We enjoyed our food/drinks and the service was good. There is space to maneuver through the eatery with a stroller. They do have high chairs. We didn't use the facilities so unsure if there's a changing table. We would return in the future to try menu items.
After spending the day exploring Ojai, this was the PERFECT restaurant to end the trip. Not only is this one of the coziest, beautiful, romantic restaurants in the city, they're serving some delicious Burmese dishes. No seriously.. everything we ordered was incredible. Food: Crispy rice salad - (10/10) everything about this salad is a yes. Truly a must order. Naan bread - (8.5/10) comes with a garlic herb butter on the side. Very solid. Crispy potatoes (10/10) perfectly crispy! The masala spice + herb aioli is chefs kiss. Pork belly noodles - (10/10) fav dish of the night. An insane flavor bomb of a dish. Lamb biryani - (9/10) comes out piping hot. The ground lamb was seasoned beautifully. It seems like they're more known for breakfast/brunch, but I promise you the dinner menu here is where it's at. Service was also amazing from our server and staff. I'm honestly still dreaming of this meal. Cannot wait for my return! read more

My family and I visited this place due to its popularity. We didn't get a chance to taste the pastries as we had a reservation for a sit down meal. It was a nice setting and the server was good. I ordered the breakfast plate with half bacon and half sausage. The sausage patty fit perfectly on the sourdough bread and so I also placed the eggs and tomato sauce on top. Chefs kiss! It was so good! All the flavors were there without overpowering. The potatoes had very good seasoning in top. 5/5 dish for me! My husband ordered the egg sando and he said it was a lot of bread and a lot going on at the same time. Too many flavors made it a bit salty was his response. 3/5 He liked the cappuccino and I enjoyed my hot vanilla latte with almond milk. Will definitely return for their pastries next time! read more
Cafe turns into a Burmese restaurant at night. Atmosphere once you walk into the posterior part of the restaurant has a moody vibe. Crispy rice salad is an explosion of flavor. A lot of textures and crunch. The Biryani looks like a chicken pot pie on the outside but is all basmati rice with few pieces of lamb inside. Puri is duck liver with this sweet jam served with fried naan. It is nice in smaller amounts but she a few bites, it was a bit much for me. I think I'm used to naan not being sweet and the combo of sweet fried naan with sweet duck liver was too different than the usual savory I expect. The best dish in my opinion was the organic tandoori half chicken. The chicken is juicy, good portions, masala was flavorful but not too much. Although I didn't like the other dishes as much, they were nice to try. It's a lot of flavors going on, so still a pleasant experience. read more
The pastries are phenomenal, always with some vegan and GF options. The place is charming and great for meeting up at. Service is great. But the Burmese food is generally lacking (note: I've only tried vegan things over the years). For example, a rainbow salad should be colorful. So head here for breakfast or brunch and skip the later meals. read more
Our first visit to The Dutchess, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Everything we ordered was fantastic -- strawberry pistachio danish, cappuccino, breakfast sando, granola, and fresh fruit -- each dish thoughtful, balanced, and beautifully prepared. The strawberry pistachio danish was a standout -- not overly sweet, with the fresh strawberries and pistachios complementing each other perfectly. The sando was another favorite, especially the tomato jam on the bun -- unique, flavorful, and something I haven't tasted anywhere else. Even the granola was exceptional, light yet full of natural flavor. Service was friendly and attentive, and the space itself is gorgeous -- rustic, cozy, and full of small-town charm with that perfect Ojai coffee shop energy. This place was a "must go" place in every Ojai weekend getaway recommendations so we had to stop by here for brunch. We came on a weekend morning and parking was super easy. You order at the counter and find your own seat. We got a breakfast sandwich, coffee, and 3 pastries and it was almost $60. The parties were good but definitely not for that price. read more
This place is so cute, a great interior design with lots of seating and great location in downtown Ojai. We stopped here for coffee and pastries when we first arrived which was great timing. I got the iced matcha latte with almond milk and vanilla plus the gluten free vegan almond strawberry cake. My fiancé got a cortado and the slab rhubarb pie. The drinks and food were delicious I will say, however the line to order was long, they were sold out of their other main gluten free option, the drinks took a surprisingly long time to come out, and the prices were pretty steep especially for the drink modifications like non-dairy milk and flavoring. Overall would definitely visit again, but will probably arrive earlier to get the pastries and maybe go somewhere else for matcha. read more

Such a pleasant surprise this morning when I came here for breakfast. Got a hand pie and danish to go but also had the breakfast plate and salad. The little lentil chutney that comes with the breakfast plate is insane! The salad was lovely not over dressed and had pickled onions, very refreshing and delightful. Took a while for my food to come out but well worth the wait. Lavender latte also excellent! read more
came here on a whim when my bf was running the ventura marathon. the cafe is cute and has a lot of seating. during the morning, they had an array of pastries neatly shown on display. i got the lemon olive oil cake and samosa pastry. the samosa had a lot of filling and the spices were pretty good. their tomato jam was interesting and added a nice touch to the pastry. lemon olive oil cake was a little dry to my liking but still yummy! a little sweet. service here is prompt and they are nice. read more

THE DUTCHESS: One of the most popular spots in Ojai for brunch, you can't beat this place. Known for their bakery goods, a line forms pretty early and I'm always impressed how they crank out their baked goods. We made reservations (highly recommend) and sat in for a lovely brunch on their outdoor patio. The restaurant itself is charming with their multi rooms, it's a little maze and quite fun. The covered patio is the way to go though as it's quiet and pretty outside. Also a quick shoutout to Rebecca for being the absolute best. For this trip we opted for some classic brunch bites: 1. Breakfast Sando is delicious. The tomato chutney gave it that perfect kick of flavor and was reminiscent of my favorite Indian dishes. A perfectly cooked sunny side up egg and I added the crispy bacon which is a must. It's a perfect breakfast sandwich that is filling but not greasy. 1. BLT Sandwich was the star of the show. Giant brioche toast, huge fresh tomatoes, extra thick crispy bacon and a lovely aioli made this dish a 10/10. Simple but perfect. Prices were reasonable and as mentioned above, service was awesome. Rebecca took really good care of us, was thoughtful, kind and attentive. The good vibes and food here will keep us coming back. Definitely a wonderful spot to dine when in Ojai. read more

Came by on a Thursday with my brother for a drink before dinner. Not too busy, lots of open tables, vibe is fine, bartender was cool. Cocktails were on point smoky mezcal is my jam. The manager on shift was lacking any personality, hospitality, no greeting or helping staff, just standing there in outer space. Weird vibe. The couple next to us said they were waiting almost 30 mins for their meal - why?! So many amazing restaurants in the area. Step it up The Dutchess!!! read more
Highly recommended walk in, we are group of 2, still able to order dishes and pastry at counter. There are large ballroom and backyard spaces as a first come first serve space. The spicy chicken is real spicy! If you like spicy food, you must try! read more

This place was so cute!! They had such amazing pastries we could not decide which ones we really wanted. We went during brunch and had a reservation so that was great but I've heard the dinner is amazing. The service was great and quick. Overall did love the place but would be open to trying other menu items especially if I could go back for dinner. read more

Drink: The Juicy Food: Naan Crispy potatoes Crispy Rice Salad Rosie's Organic Tandoori Half Chicken All these dishes are delicious on their own and very complimentary when eaten together. Get the crispy potatoes, and smother it in the Chicken tandoori sauce. Yummy! Take the naan fill it with the crispy rice salad and/or chicken tandoori and dip it in the tandoori sauce or the sauce that comes with the potatoes. So good. When you enter, the place looks quaint and homey, but when you head to the restrooms, the restaurant is pretty extensive than it appears. Would definitely come back here or recommend others when in Ojai. read more

Food service ambience: wowza. Keep in mind: you're in Ventura County, arguably one of the most backwards, ignorant and intellectually deficient locations in California. Ojai is no exception, based on conversation with John the manager and the entire waitstaff. But let me start at the beginning. We got here at 10 o'clock in the morning and stood in line for 45 minutes to place our order at the front desk. I then ordered at the front desk: two hot drinks and two small pastries and paid. It cost us 50 bucks. That's right 50 bucks for coffee and a pastry. We were given a number and took our pastries to go find a table, in which we walked through a basically empty room of tables that were empty, and were told to go either sit in the back room at picnic tables, or outside in the heat, as those were the only options if you didn't have a reservation. "If we do it for you, we'd have to do it for everyone." Why not do it for everyone, then? In reverse order? You know, have a big sign that says RESERVATION ONLY before you stand in line for 45 minutes and certainly BEFORE YOU PAY????? Meanwhile, the nice cool room with the empty tables was totally empty. We asked multiple waitstaff and the woman outside in front of the restaurant for a waiver on the empty room so that we could just sit down and have a quick hot drink, a sip of coffee, eat our pastries and be on our way, and we were told for 30 minutes, browbeaten about "policy" and trying to reason with every member on the staff, and being told that that was not possible and they could not help us. My stomach was so upset that I couldn't possibly eat a single bite whereas my sister wolfed down all her food by stress-eating without tasting anything. We were so upset and insulted and horrified, I can only tell you that no matter what the food is like, with the thumping, stupid music playing in the background so that everybody has to shout to be heard, it's not worth the incredibly inhospitable experience that you have to go through to enjoy a short stay at a table. Not worth it. By a mile. BUT, if you like having your stomach shut down, and being charged 50 bucks for coffee and pastry, come on down, the water's fine. read more

All the pastries were great! A lot of variety of sweet and savory to choose from. We went on a weekday right before 10am and beat the crowd. The coffees were great but alittle show to get them, I think because we ordered a more special coffee items. A lot of great seating to choose from inside and out. I highly recommend, especially since Ojai is known for Pixie Tangerines. The service was great and the place itself was gorgeous indoors and outdoors. One of my favorite spots in Ojai. Love the lunch menu! The breakfast plate is perfect. But, my palette just doesn't appreciate the Burmese flavorings and dinner menu options. The decor and atmosphere is what draws me in the most. And, service is always fantastic. read more

Very cute location with both indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was friendly! They had a bunch of pastries and breads on the display window that all looked phenomenal it was hard to pick which one to try. I ended up going with the cheesy twist which unfortunately I was so excited to try. I didn't take a picture of. It was light and fluffy like a croissant and had an amazing cheese and herb taste to it. We shared the BLT from the perfectly toasted bread to the perfectly crisp bacon to the perfectly juicy tomatoes it was one of the best BLTs I've ever had! I got the Matcha and my boyfriend got the cold brew. He loved the cold brew. I didn't get a very strong. Matcha taste at all. I just tasted milk so for me personally I didn't love it. read more

We decided to drive from Santa Barbara to Ojai on this beautiful day and try Roti. They weren't open until noon, and we arrived at 11, so we opted to try the place next door. It has a cool country vibe with a great outdoor patio. There was a long line at the walk-up ordering station. Seating was self-serve, and we got our own plateware and other items. The brunch menu was easy to navigate. There are a few reasons why I'm only giving three stars. I ordered the DUTCHESS BREAKFAST PLATE -- Weiser Farms potatoes, Niman Ranch bacon, tomato chutney, sourdough toast, and two eggs OM. I substituted the bacon for their homemade country sausage patties. The sausage was very pink in the middle and undercooked, and as was rest of the plate;barely warm and definitely cold less than eating halfway through. The crispy potatoes and sourdough toast were the highlights of the plate. Jennifer ordered the CHICKEN SATAY BOWL -- marinated chicken breast, avocado, cucumber, calrose rice, pickled red onion, sesame, served with creamy peanut dressing--and it was also barely warm. I took a few bites and thought it was ok, great. Would have expected much more dominant flavors for an Indonesian dish. The person delivering our food didn't say hello or treat us kindly; they simply asked whose plates were whose, with a somewhat smug attitude that seemed bothered to be there. I dared asked for butter and she never offered ketchup or anything else we might have wanted and didn't check back on us at all. If she had, I would have addressed our concerns. However, a very friendly and polite young staff member came by to address a noisy and disruptive group of kids, whose parents didn't do anything about it. Jennifer is a school teacher, so she was fine with it; I, however, was less so. I wouldn't be so critical if the price weren't $70 for breakfast. My expectations run a bit higher at this price point.. Would we return? Probably, but it wouldn't be our first choice in Ojai, but I would definitely ask for the food to be served much warmer. read more

The food was delicious all around but the Motley crew lamb masala was the star of the dinner the lamb was packed with flavor which complemented the tandoori chicken along with the naan. Our choice of cocktails were the Nuevo mundo which was more refreshing and the Free bird with more of a spicy base both were mezcal. To end the night we got the falooda that had layers of flavor one under the other as pictured and were good to eat one layer at a time but when you grabbed a spoonful of them all that was when you got a concoction that can be described as subtly tart, sweet, and refreshing.It was a very warm ambiance from the bar seating while waiting for a table, to the outdoor seating. read more

A nice spot to start your day. We stopped by for some morning coffee and bites. I saw people recommend making reservations for brunch, but those are only available on the weekends. We waited in line to order (best if you're not in a hurry.) Debated on baked goods. We decided on the Frangipane croissant that paired well with the hot latte. The breakfast plate was filling too. The space itself is airy, cute, and much bigger than I expected. I can see why The Dutchess is a highly recommended place! We didn't have a chance to try their dinner though, but I've heard good things too. read more

Lovely venue with true ambience. It exudes an understated elegance and sophistication. The food was surprisingly traditional Burmese fair with a twist. Satisfying and unique? Yes. Amazing? I dined here on a Monday night when it wasn't too busy. We ordered the duck liver mousse with puri to start. We then had the coconut chickpea curry with naan and vermillion rock cod as our mains. Everything was so fresh, flavorful and beautifully plated. Even with something as simple as naan, I feel like I could've just kept eating it on its own for days, because it was that good. I do feel like the service could improve, as I don't think anyone checked on us during our meal or refilled our waters. The ambiance and food were incredible and I'd love to return again in hopes that they can improve the service, especially given the price point. read more
I came to Ojai for a meditation and stumbled across this gem of a restaurant looking for Sunday brunch. It's Burmese-American cuisine and they have a bunch of delicious brunch options. What I love is that they're a bakery as well and they make all their breads and pastries in house and wow are they delicious. Right when you walk in it has a very homey, welcoming vibe with wooden floors and interiors. The manager seated us and he was super friendly and gave us a great outdoor seat (they had heaters so we stayed nice and warm). I got the breakfast plate which comes with 2 sunny side up eggs, sourdough toast, crispy smashed potatoes, bacon, and a side of tomato chutney. The bread was so crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Went perfectly with the gooey sunny side up eggs. And the chutney on the side turned out to be a standout element of the dish. It had a curry flavor that brought everything together and gave the dish a Burmese flare! Our server, Jordan, took excellent care of us. She recommended the chocolate chip cookie and the gluten free blueberry muffin, both of which complimented our breakfasts so well. The chocolate chip cookie tasted like an old school cookie with big chocolate chunks dispersed throughout and it was the right combo of salty & sweet. I'll definitely be coming back every trip to Ojai I take: I can't wait to try their Burmese cuisine for dinner. read more
