Persimmon Smoothie
Deni B.

This was a great first stop in Ojai! The ambiance was very inviting and the food was great. I would say, it's lovely healthy food in the style of Mexican dishes, but didn't really have a Mexican flavor profile. Definitely elevated and delicious, but don't expect the same spices and preparations. I had the goat cheese and veggies tacos, taquitos, and fresh chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were incredible and super fresh. I loved the homemade hot sauce as well. The star of the show for me was the seasonal persimmon smoothie. I couldn't believe how delicious it was, and for only $7?! The bathroom was pretty disgusting when I stopped in, but I will try not to hold that against them lol overall the restaurant was clean and the people were friendly!

Amazing food that exceeded my expectations! It was hard to decide what to order, but we ended up sharing the sopes and the goat cheese & veggie tacos, and everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful. Their corn tortillas are to die for. They also have plenty of gluten-free options, which was perfect for my mom who has celiac. We even got a delicious gluten-free peanut butter cookie to finish. There's lots of seating, and since it was such a nice day, we sat on the patio. Food came out quickly too.

Haven't had sopes since being in Mexico and these were surprisingly delicious! Bigger and more filling than I thought they'd be. The flour they make it with is thick and so good, I just wish they had knives sharper than butter knives to cut them. I kept struggling to cut a bite and then cutting through and eating the paper... lol. Salad looked great but unfortunately was super oily and I didn't end up eating it. Food came out quick, love the outdoor seating. Good but was it worth $17? I am not sure haha

We had such a great experience our first time here, we decided to stop by again. We only had a few people in front of us, but it took a long time to order. I waited for the cashier to call me and she looked at me oddly for waiting. We ordered a smoothie and a tonic. We grabbed a seat, the first table was filthy and had hair on it, so we moved. There was no air conditioning and it was almost hotter inside than outside! After waiting almost 30 minutes I walked up to see where our order was. The same cashier was by herself and again gave me an odd look. She asked if I'd ordered food or drinks and before finishing her question read back my order. She went in the back and walked them out to me stating they've been really busy. The drinks tasted good! However, no fun decoration for the smoothie like prior. Very disappointed in this trip!

Kabocha curry (so good I forgot to take a picture)

Obsessed. Will definitely be back. Amazing service and the food tasted like it was made with so much love. I got the seasonal kabocha curry and I will definitely be thinking about this dish for a while. Super cute patio to enjoy your meal too.

so my wife and I decide to eat at the farmer and the cook since my wife is vegan and I'm open-minded. Now I get the fact that I love so Mexican food unfortunately I have an allergy to cilantro, which makes my ordering kind of truncated. With that said who served me not quite sure what exactly I ate, but I was still hungry afterwards. also the meal came out somewhere between cold and look warm. My wife's food was along the same lines. no, I'm not sure if this is the norm for this place or if we just had stuff that was served at the wrong temperature. Between all this and the cup of mocha coffee, we ordered which honestly just tasted like a cup of water down hot chocolate with very little coffee resemblance in the cup. Needless to say we were underwhelmed and truth we're not gonna go back. The market seem well put together and I'm guessing if you live up in those neck of the woods and that's the kind of food you like shopping for this would be an ideal place . Maybe we ordered the wrong thing. But serving food at that temperature without warning, and also the interesting fact that you order at the counter and they bring the food. Nobody actually bother to check on us to make sure we were happy with the food. Never been there before, but shall not be returning .

We stopped at this little roadside cafe. Everything was organic. I got the coffee and breakfast burrito. It was good you have to ask for the hot taco salsa

This was our morning stop before heading back to LA and their burrito and vanilla latte were delicious! Both the inside and outside areas have plenty of space to eat and the service was very quick.

Excellent staff, excellent food, and excellent ambiance. Really can't go wrong with this spot. They gave us great recommendations for our first visit to Ojai and to this restaurant. We got the chips with guacamole and salsa, peach iced tea, huarache, and the tamale. Everything was great portion size and the food tasted so fresh and filling. We also got the peanut butter and oatmeal cookies, both were good but a very coconut taste (which I'm not a fan of but if you are then these are your cookies!!). Definitely would return on my next visit to Ojai.

Cauliflower tostada, beans and rice
casie k.

Been wanting to try this place for a while now and finally got the chance to. It's a cute place with a market in the front and then the remainder of the building seating for the restaurant. They have a great outdoor are that you can sit at surrounded by beautiful plants and it even wraps around from what I believe. The service was mediocre. The gals taking our order were very dry and didn't seem to be very helpful which was a bummer, but we only talked to them to order. The food itself was simply delicious. To have so many healthy, vegetarian, and vegan options and pull it off is something that I can respect. I ordered the cauliflower tostada, which I was a little nervous as I am not a super big fan of cauliflower, but it was soooo good! It also came with beans and rice and I didn't feel heavy after eating it. If you're visiting, definitely be prepared to spend a pretty penny, but the food will be worth it!

This cafe is a coffee bar collective by day and Burmese wine bar by night, and it's one of Ojai's two Michelin-recommended restaurants. So it shouldn't come as a surprise to learn that The Dutchess is one of this rustic valley town's most popular restaurants from sun-up to sundown. The journey to the patio is like a play in 4 acts. Enter into the spacious coffee bar up front, wind through the cozy dining room, and pass by the moody back-room bar before finally reaching the market-lit patio. The vast pergola is accented by traditional Burmese parasols. Both heat lamps and fans are available to tackle any weather. Potted plants surround the lacquered-wood table and French bistro wicker chairs. Soft acoustic rock plays at a relatively low volume compared to inside. My fiancee and I reserved our weekend dinner a few weeks in advance, and good thing we did -- the restaurant was booked full. We kicked off our meal with the Naan, a frisbee-sized, buttery pita paired with garlicky butter. Admittedly, it alone was the least exciting dish, but it paired well with other plates. The standout dish was the Crispy Rice Salad. The herb-forward flavor and crispy, crunchy textures combined into a crave-worthy palate-wetter. For our main, we opted for the Biryani. Ojai lamb was tossed with spiced rice and topped with fluffy puff pastry. The warm, evolving flavor was a comfortable embrace for the palate. Lastly, our side of spicy-savory Burmese Chili Paste was extra hot, and we could only handle so much; while fine to try, we didn't find it to be necessary. The service was solid throughout the night, and we were offered complimentary bubbly to celebrate our special occasion, as well as take-away chocolate chip cookies on the house. Our bill totaled a reasonable $100 (after tax and tip). My fiancee and I agreed that The Dutchess delivered a big-city-quality meal for a fraction of the cost, and we would strongly recommend it for an Ojai dinner date.

Rory's Other Place is the next-door cafe counterpart, offering the standard lineup of coffee, pastries, and brunch plates, as well as sophisticated make-your-own market boards and wines by the glass. And the most popular item? The buffalo milk soft serve affogato. The diminutive stained-glass sign is partially hidden by the royal blue awnings. Inside, natural light floods in through the narrow Victorian breakfast nooks, and a soft serve-shaped lamp hangs from the ceiling above the deftly organized pastry display. To the right is a full-length mirror with the menu scribed in white. Shelves are stocked with premium pantry goods, from imported tinned fish to matcha chocolate. Outside, Rory's Other Place hosts a private, perpetually packed patio. A mix of oldies and acoustic pop covers partially drown out the standard coffeeshop hustle and bustle. Whether for breakfast or lunch, expect the queue to stretch all the way to the bathrooms My fiancee and I visited Ojai for a weekend day trip, excited to try the Affogato. We opted for vanilla-chocolate swirl, drizzled with a half-shot of espresso (another half-shot was served on the side). The tiny portion of soft serve overflowed out of the even tinier aluminum saucer. The end result was akin to extra-strong melted coffee ice cream. We also opted for a few pastries. Of the lot, I preferred the Cheddar Chive Scone. The savory cheese really shone through, and no bite felt dry; that being said, I wish it were warm, and the cheese were gooey. Meanwhile, two-bite thumbprint cookies had a pleasant half-baked texture, but the nutty flavor overwhelmed the dime-sized dot of sauce. Our creamy iced Matcha Latte was on the better end of standard. The service was moderately efficient, and the prices were sky-high; expect $4 for tiny cookies, and over $10 for the affogato. There's no doubt that Rory's Other Place is one of the most popular cafes in town; however, I'm not convinced that it's worth the wait or the price, especially with so many other popping coffee shops within a few blocks.

"Come back, refocus, remember the goal." -- Rory Gilmore…read more I will be in Ojai for business more often and was in town for the first business related visit this weekend. Another hot day, a lovely festival in the downtown. LA Eater had a list of best Ohai eateries so I chose Rory off that list. Big mistake, I should have utilized Yelp. This is one of two eateries owned by the namesake with this being the higher end dinner spot. A lovely patio plus a noisy cool interior make up the space. We were seated inside and first off we noticed how uncomfortable the seating is. Certainly not designed for a European type dinner. My seat was too small for a tall, big guy. Hurt my knees by the end. The other seat had a thin cushion and was also uncomfortable. Why not make your guests seating comfy? Server greeted, asked had we been here before, we said "no", she said welcome and that's it. No intro about the restaurant. We learned from the other table it was a family style restaurant. My partner asked where restrooms were, upon her immediate arrival back was asked what she wanted to drink. I told the server let's give her a few minutes to look at the menu, she seemed a bit miffed at that. The aperol spritz's we ordered were a Temu version of the real Italian thing. We didn't finish them. The dishes were a range of excellent (crudo, Japanese sweet potatoes and broiled oysters - although oysters were too small), solid (market oysters and steak) to disappointingly bland and lukewarm (hearth bread which did not live up to its description at all). There was no explanation of the dishes except where the market oysters were from. Server and runners were quick but no banter. I have no idea what this restaurant is about or trying to accomplish. There is an extra fee for worker healthcare, no announcement of that either. The meal was decent, for $220 for two with tip it's completely overpriced, the lack of context made me feel like this restaurant really didn't care about us except for the exchange of money. LA Eater was wrong and I do not recommend this place. I will try other Ojai restaurants when I return.
