I arrived at 8:15 PM, even though the restaurant's posted closing time is 9:00 PM. There were still two parties ahead of us in line who were allowed to place their orders, but we were told the kitchen was closed and couldn't order. If the kitchen stops taking orders well before the posted closing time, that should be clearly communicated so customers don't make the trip expecting to be served. Disappointing Experience - Burnt Pizza & Poor Service I wanted to like this place, but it was a letdown. The owner, Tony, gave free cookies to two white couples ahead of us after learning it was their first visit. When my wife, who was right behind them, cheerfully said it was her first time too, he waved her off, said "no need for a tip," and walked away to make our pizza without gloves. This isn't about a cookie--it's about respect. The dismissive attitude left my wife feeling belittled. If you want to discriminate against someone at least be discreet about it. Then came the pizza: burnt on the bottom, with large, deep blackened areas--well past "charred" and into "burnt," giving it a bitter, acrid taste. Clearly overcooked or mishandled, not artisan style. I have been here a few times, but really just to buy bread and their fabulous bagels to go. The bacon egg and cheese bagel is fantastic- worth the wait for it to be made in the wood-fired pizza oven- excellent everything bagel with tons of seeds and great flavor - bacon MADE IN HOUSE(as are all of their products ) meat and eggs purchased from the same local farm and a wonderfully sharp cheddar (not sure of the origin of the cheese). I love that all of their menu items are made with local ingredients and are organic. The food tasted fantastic and the staff was welcoming, personable and informative. The price is inclusive of tax and tip- and their business model provides a livable wage and benefits including a 401k match - how many restaurants offer that! ?!? It looks like they have a nice selection of wines in the bottle shop and we will be back for pizza/dinner sometime soon ! We were in town for my boyfriend's birthday and checked beforehand for reservations but saw many available on this day so we decided to walk in as we weren't sure when exactly we were going till want to eat. We came in before 7:30 and saw many tables open. We were turned away at the door being told they were only accepting reservations. Even after letting them know we were celebrating they didn't care to accommodate. I stumbled upon this place when I was passing through town. It's a small place, with limited seating, and a few outdoor seats. This place may be small, but the food is full of flavor! I ordered the Porco Rosso and the flavors were absolutely wonderful. I think what really made this pizza so wonderful was the dough. I was talking with one of the pizza makers and he told that it's a 72 hour dough. It was flavorful, chewy, and the cook was great and had a wonderful char. Very mid experience. The guy who seems to be the owner lacked good customer service and I'm going to say it - he seemed to favor the white clientele far more than others. I overheard him being very rude to a Hispanic family sitting down on a table ahead of time while their daughters were waiting in line to order. Then, he was very chatty and kind to another white couple by asking how they're doing and even giving some free food to another waiting in line. My wife went in to grab a bagel and was told that extra 20% "worker health benefit fee" is automatically added to the bill. When we reviewed the receipt, it says 20% gratuity/tips. I guess they tried to rephase their forced tipping with some other terms. I guess this has been happening for a while based on other's review. The bagel tasted fairly good - we got one with bacon, eggs and cheese. But we will not returned again and would not recommend this store. Note - we were at another Ojai restaurant which also charge a health fee (4%) for dined in service. I asked about the basil & they said it was not in season. If I had known they didn't have basil I would have ordered something else. My husband enjoyed his pizza, he ordered the margheritaville pizza with pepperoni & sausage. The worst part about dinner was that I got FOOD POISONING from their desserts. I ordered the Black sesame chocolate budino, it was a pudding, I didn't taste chocolate only black sesame.
