On their website, The Duce advertises themselves as "Where pretty meets gritty and produce meets prohibition." They say you can plan an unforgettable event at The Duce. Well, I definitely had an unforgettable experience...
They pose the question, "What the Duce!?" Don't worry, they answer it:
"What the duce?...it is what it was ... a 1928 warehouse that once anchored a bustling produce district by day... the notorious deuce by night... dice, vice, jazz and other not so good clean fun.
Same corner... about a century later...prohibition meets produce ...again... and we're tippin' our hats to both!"
-Steve & Andi, the duce cofounders
Last night, they didn't tip their hats to both--At least not in our direction. No, we were met with a bigoted owner who shut down our show before it even began. Worse, he allowed our event to set up; waited for our event patrons to buy food and drinks; and then he pulled the plug on our show.
His claim: They are a family friendly establishment. Our music and T-Shirts (which had the event name on them) are not.
...so our event was canceled right before its start time. Again we didn't begin, offend someone, and then this decision was made. It was made while customers sat around fellowshipping with one another, waiting for the show to start.
The event, an open mic poetry show. The premise being a play on a well known skit from comedian, Dave Chappelle. We wanted a space where we could have forthright, candid speech. That freedom of speech was derailed because of the prejudice beliefs of The Duce. It was curtailed because they acted on the weakness of rationalizing stereotypes. They saw too many black and brown faces listening to culturally appropriate music, and their LACK OF cultural knowledge enabled them to make an assumption about our party. They reduced us to offensive thugs. They deduced were no good. They could lose business over us, the poets.
It was appalling. I've never been to a show that was called to a halt for peacefully gathering-- for laughing and smiling. Of all I've committed to, this was the show I've been highly anticipating. It was a bit of a reunion show for many of us. Like most adults of a certain age, our careers and family create responsibilities that don't allow most of us to get out often anymore. We're not the young adults we used to be. In addition, I relocated to another state and haven't seen those beautiful faces in awhile. This show was the dream of a good friend of mine. It was one he'd wanted to throw for years. I didn't just fly in as the featured guest. I came to support a person who is dear to me. I came to see and be a part of the culmination of years of planning.
The Duce crushed that. I wish I could fulfill some stereotype so that other bigots reading this can justify the owners cold decision. I wish I could paint some gangster scene for you but I can't. That wasn't our group, and I'd be lying if I made us scary, shifty, boisterous people. The Duce made that deduction however. They demonized us as a group. There are too many great mothers and fathers in "our community" of artists to not be family oriented and mindful. If only there were families there that night, we could've proved it. However, there was only the mature adults in our crowd and the mature adults on the other side of the venue.
The Duce (self proclaimed lovers of gritty, notorious deuce by night... dice, vice, jazz and other not so good clean fun) enjoys events with the Mick Jaggers, the Ozzy Osbornes, and the Stevie Nicks. They don't mind white "family friendly" bands whose members and fans pop pills; snort lines of coke; take mushrooms; trip on acid; ingest Molly; and become oversexed on ecstasy. They don't appreciate the humor of the Dave Chapelles, Richard Pryors, or Kevin Harts. They don't feel positive inspiration from the James Baldwins, Maya Angelous, Nikki Giovannis, or Langston Hughes. No Martin or Malcolms for them.
I will never patron this place again. I should've known what to expect after viewing the photos on their website and seeing a marked lack of diversity that we would be singled out and ostracized. I should've known after viewin their Facebook page and noticing how often they're hiring for (basically) all positions regularly something was fishy. If you can't keep your employees happy where you're constantly needing to re-hire everything but the kitchen sink... Something is wrong.
The Duce, the Douche. A racist establishment by any name is still an ugly blight to be avoided. read more
