I don't spend nearly enough time at the Double Windsor, and that's entirely on me and my laziness. Having several excellent, personally beloved bars a mere block or so from me on 5th Avenue in Park Slope all too often keeps me from venturing an extra few blocks to this incredible spot up by Prospect Park West right at the border of Park Slope and Windsor Terrace. Well, it's high time to start working a little extra exercise in with my craft beer consumption. The Double Windsor is a bar that just feels like it could fit any occasion like a glove - party with a large group, an intimate, quiet drink between friends and/or lovers, or anything in-between. There are a number of smaller tables--most with lovely street views through the ample windows, in addition to a large communal table smack dab in the center of the establishment. The bar is large and dark and undulating, and just makes you want to pull up a stool and sit there and throw back a few. And those few may well include some of the finest craft beer offerings in New York City. The rotating tap list is constantly updated and features an assortment of brewers and styles that will suit any beer drinking palate. For the non-beer drinkers out there--what's wrong with you? No, seriously... there is a full bar with a particularly excellent bourbon/whiskey selection and some decent wine options. What really puts the DW over the top is their excellent kitchen, open until midnight (I believe) every night. The burger is top-notch, as is the Cornmeal Crusted Catfish Platter. They also generally have an assortment of interesting, unique, oft-seasonal items (e.g., salads featuring seasonal accoutrements, such as a ramp vinaigrette recently) that go far beyond the standard bar fare in both assortment and quality. If you just want to go out to a cool, relaxing bar for drinks with friends and/or you want to enjoy a quality meal with said drinks, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better place to settle in and spend your night. read more

Went here last week and enjoyed it so decided to come back. I got a beer and sat by the window, but then noticed there were two flies in my beer. I asked the bartender if I could get a new one (it was maybe 3/4 full so it's not like I had drank most of it already) and she simply shrugged and said I could buy another $9 beer and it was my own fault for sitting outside (again I was not outside but by the window which had already been open). wtf? I'd understand declining if this was a $3 PBR, but at this price point I expect a little higher standard of customer service. My food (crispy sweet potatoes) also took about 20 minutes. I suspect it was done before then but she was simply too busy chatting to bring it to me (i had to leave my table and go to the bar to get her attention!) Skip the surliness and go across the street to Krupa Grocery, where they don't treat paying customers like an inconvenience. Or at least go when that particular bartender (blonde woman) isn't there. read more

Check your bank statement after eating from this place. The young woman that takes orders gives herself a 25% gratuity regardless of whether you give consent. I also find it extremely tacky that she asks every customer placing an order if they would like to leave a tip. I'm fine tipping the kitchen but not o.k. giving 25% to a person just for taking my order. One thing that I despise is a crook! Shame on this young woman for scamming loyal patrons. Been here many time for drinks before and after Nitehawk but finally ate here for the first time last night. The bar was absolutely buzzing with energy and felt like a packed British pub which makes sense because this is a perfect place to grab a few pints and chat with friends. However the food is a different story. As a former server I hate to do this but my friend and I kept saying to eachother "are we being punked? Like do they want us to say something" which isn't a great feeling. The wings were bar far the smallest wings I've ever eaten or seen in my life. Truly horrible and I couldn't believe they'd serve them. The "loaded" potato skins was just one unseasoned backed potato with minimal sour cream and even less bacon. The caesar salad was fine. They put white anchovy on top which was a nice attempt to fancy it up but it was poorly dressed and had three GIANT croutons which doesn't make any sense lol. They should be bite size so you're not taking bites of a rock hard giant crouton! Again I hate to drop a bad review but for $45 for those three dishes I felt like I got scammed. I don't usually write Yelp reviews, but felt like I needed to warn people. I ordered the steak frites for lunch at Double Windsor, and was so hungry that I had eaten at least half of it before my friend pointed out to me that it was barely cooked on the inside. It was true; the inside of the steak was almost raw. I had ordered medium rare, but this was way undercooked. Since I already ate half of it I felt like I couldn't send it back, so just ate around it. When I got home, had terrible food poisoning, spend the rest of the day in the bathroom. Still feeling terrible the next day. Be warned - make sure they cook your meat thoroughly! It's not worth getting sick. read more

Ah, yes. My favorite Friday happy hour and Saturday night hang. The brews at DW are the best, and the food doesn't disappoint. If I wasn't lactose intolerant or chubby I would eat the mac and cheese daily. So creamy and with a crispy breadcrumb topping... you can't go wrong. I do wish the chefs would change up the menu a bit. The menu has been stagnant for a while now, despite the few specials every so often. Come to this place for a warm, woody welcome. The seating is primarily communal on the left side of the bar with upgraded picnic-style tables, minus the backache (they have actual chairs). The bar wraps around, and if you ask me, the best seat is the one farthest to the right, almost tucked behind the bar. It fills us quickly on Saturday nights and of course of Monday nights for weekly trivia. The bartenders always have good recommendations and know their brews inside and out. I love DW especially in the summer when the sun comes in through the large windows. Being a 2 minute diagonal walk to the park is also a huge plus. Thanks for the love, DW! read more

The former Royal Video store has morphed into a lovely local bar with thoughtful local ingredients and killer drafts. If I still lived across the street, this would be my local hangout for sure. BF and I stopped in for a late lunch. Weird system of ordering food in a little hole by the kitchen in back and drinks ordered at bar. Nonetheless, on a warm day with air wafting in on this corner near the bar, ya gotta love this place. $11 bought me a slow roasted Heritage pork sandy with pickled onions and a side of lettuc(hate calling dressed lettuce a salad). We shared the fries that came with bf's burger. The spicy, sweet pork pieces were pretty delish as was the crispy fries. A draft of Troegs dreamweaver wheat was a divine combo. Great beers, great food, and an overall great time! Only thing I can fault them on is the communal seating for food, but hey, luck of the draw. Beer selection is tops. Lots of local crafts and limited edition stuff. Good whiskey selection too (when we went, they were doing a beer and shot special with Jack's Abbey and Wyoming whiskey). They have food you'd expect at a bar (like burgers, fried chicken, and wings), but they're a step above standard pub fare. And they have nicer stuff and specials like mussel frites and scallops. The spicy honey sriracha wings were really good. Sauce came on the side and had a nice kick to it. The mussels were steamed in beer and were tasty. Scallops were on the smaller side (since they're from Long Island), but there were a good amount of them. Super reasonably priced at $15 too. Would definitely come back! read more

Came here on Sunday after a long walk through prospect park. This place was perfect, not pretentious and chill. Wearing my walk wear and hair messy I felt perfectly. Perfect place to just be you and relax. It's cramped but crowd is great (30s and up). Not a dive bar just neighborhood hangout spot. This was a close one. I almost made this review number 200. But saving that for another special place. The Double Windsor is 'my bar' or what used to be 'our bar' in my past relationship. I finally found myself able to go back since March and with a reason because Steph bunked over last weekend. I've had many wonderful moments, many awful moments, and many drunken moments and probably both wise and poor decisions made here. But its near and dear to the heart. The beer selection is FANTASTIC. It's always on a rotating menu. When they run out of something on tap it gets replaced with another unique and interesting ale from either New York, across the states, or even the seas. A lot like Pony Bar or many gastro pubs but this has been around for quite some time and I find it more communal, laid back, and during the day maybe even a little family-oriented. Yes, you will see a baby or two in here on a Saturday afternoon. It's Park Slope/Windsor Terrace. Happy Hour is until 7pm on weekdays and from opening until 4pm on the weekends. You get $4 on 16 oz pints and a $1 off their other sized beers. Also, I believe cocktails are a buck off. But this is definitely more a beer bar than focused on well drinks or wine. The thing behind this beer menu is that I NEVER know what I am going to expect when I walk in and I find that so exciting! According to beer menus right now they have a Westbrook Mexican Cake Imperial Stout, Stift Engleszell Gregorius, Founders Rubaeus, Empire Cream Ale Nitro, Local Option Blood ov the Kings, and so many other AMAZING things that were not on the menu the last time I was here this past Saturday! Grrr. I want to try them all right now! Point in being, I am never disappointed. And somehow I do end up trying one too many beers whenever I go and the night never ends boring at least. After eating a filling lunch in Crown Heights, we decided to walk through Prospect Park and found yourselves in Windsor Terrace. I've had the Double Windsor bookmarked for a while, so we decided to walk a few blocks over for a drink. The tap list is strong. There is a focus on craft beers with some local options mixed in. I noticed an offering from Allagash that I haven't tried before, so I ordered a glass of it. There's lots of seating with a long communal table in the middle of the pub. We decided to sit at the window overlooking the nearby roundabout. I'm not sure there is a more proper British activity in Brooklyn than having a pint at a pub near a roundabout. We decided to compliment our drinks with some food. We ordered a pot of mussels with fries. The mussels were big and hearty. It was a great value for $15. The mussel broth was good, but I've had more flavorful broths elsewhere. The bartender was quick and accommodating. She kindly connected my phone to charge while we hung out at the pub. So I've been walking by this place for 8 years, saying to myself, "I bet they make a good burger." Well right about now, I'm kicking myself for not stopping in sooner, because I finally got that burger and it was damn tasty! And the fries that went with it were no too shabby either! The other food that went by looked pretty tasty as well. So why only 4 stars? I wasn't crazy about the bun (it was okay but got a bit soggy), the burger was well done instead of medium well, and they don't have sautéed onions. Very small quibbles, I will admit, because it definitely was the best burger I've had in awhile. I will absolutely come back soon to try the fried chicken sandwich and the Everything But The Wings: sounds intriguing! read more

At least the beer was good. The food, not so much. I ordered what I thought was a catfish sandwich, but it wasn't a sandwich--OK, that's my mistake. But WHY then, would you not provide utensils in a to-go order??? Or at least ASK if I wanted utensils? Went here twice on my trip to Brooklyn. One night was with my wife and sister for some drinks and snacks. The next was the day I was leaving. Had dinner here with my sister. They don't skimp on the drinks here. Pretty stiff drinks. The burger was MEAN. I mean that's a thick patty of juicy and delicious burger. I love the entire system here. You want drinks, that's self explanatory. You want food, you go to the window in the back that goes to the kitchen and order your food and pay for it there and then. They give you a number which you can place on your table. There's a lot of communal seating which I am usually not a fan of (sorry, I'm a gen x) BUT, I LOVE the way they do it here. It doesn't feel like they have done it because it's a new 'trend' or something but if I recall correctly, it's always been that way here so you will see the benches and tables having their vintage look. Takes me back to the time when things really were more communal. Does get loud which is expected. read more

What an amazing little neighborhood bar! The service is amazing and they have a great rotation of beer to try. I also appreciate that they have ciders available, too. Being from Buffalo, I was excited to see a Buffalo Brewery on the list for the evening! The music is great, there are a few TV's to ease any social anxiety you or anyone in your party may be experiencing, and the overall ambiance is very cozy. The space is big enough that you can stand around and chat, but there is also table seating available, too. I love the big bar seating along the windows. The food is delicious, too. Good but not Great; I'd eat here again if I was in the neighborhood. But wouldn't go out of my way to come back. I ordered a burger - it was good, but nothing that really wow'd me. I might prefer Five Guys to it. The fries were very crispy, of the shoestring variety. My husband loved it, I'm more of a thick fries girl. But that's just subjective. This Isn't far from my neighborhood, in fact just a bus ride away. Today I went on the recommendation of a friend whose son lives in the neighborhood. I had mac & cheese, which was rich with Parmesan cheddar and fontina, and added pancetta. It was cooked up to bubbly perfection! And I ate it all, which means I was pretty darn hungry. But it was rich and delicious. I'm not much of a drinker per se, but they do have a great selection of Artisanal beers and drinks. And a terrific selection of dishes and daily specials that aren't expensive at all. It's a great unpretentious place, with a great vibe. Totally hassle-free. One of my friends lives within stumbling distance of this bar, which is dangerous because they serve generous pours of Knob Creek for $8. It's simple math, really. Stumbling In + Knob Creek = Crawling Out. Luckily, they also have GREAT fries and tasty hush puppies to soak up all the alcohol. And an excellent selection of beer, in case you want to be able to get out of bed before noon the next day. I also hear the burger is legit, but Will Power* decided to make a rare appearance, so it'll have to wait 'til next time. As will the pulled pork. And the mac & cheese. As the Baroness of South Slope and the Duchess of Double Windsor, how's about a third update to my DW review? I think it's time to add on that 5th star. Of the innumerable things I love about this place (ambiance, lighting, communal tables, bartenders; I could go on forever), the most notable thing is that Double Windsor works for everything and everyone. A date, a group, a stroller, parents visiting, work meeting (ok, maybe not at night), playoffs of whatever sport du jour we're obsessing over (Let's Go Mets!!!). Sit at the bar and you'll make a new friend (or boyfriend... just saying). You can find your niche here with any crowd and it's always welcoming. I always recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Things not even worth mentioning: everything on the menu is bomb. The rotating beer list. Those wings. I even had the steak salad once and it was superb. The best burger - always worth getting bacon and cheese for a few bucks more. Yes, OK, fine. I know what you're thinking. "But Yelena, this is a block from your house. It's right off the F train. PROS: Fairly nice atmosphere. Good Beer. Friendly service. CONS: Do not go here if you are looking for a decent eating experience. My wife and I went for a Saturday date night and got a variety of things on the menu with high expectations. Not of those menu items lived up to those expectations; in fact, everything was barely edible with the possible exceptions of their garden variety fries. Specifically (1) The lamb dip sandwich was extremely bland; we couldn't even tell what sort of meat was on it, but it tasted more like roast beef to me than lamb; (2) The mussels were impressively large but did taste right. The texture was seriously off, and my wife predicted that we would both get sick (although I'm pleased to report that we did not!) (3) The Brussels sprouts, like the mussels, were unusually large. However, any opportunity for The Double Windsor to capitalize on this advantage with great taste was completely missed. I don't want to give the impression that everything about this place is horrible (again, the laid back atmosphere and friendly bartenders were a plus), or even that there is a better option in the surrounding neighborhood (which frankly seems equally lacking). But given that The Double Windsor went 0 for 3 on the food front, it is hard for us to imagine that any of the items that we didn't order could have been much better. read more

You know how when you get on the MTA subway in the morning and out of nowhere there is a blasting, cacaphonous, indecipherable voice screaming at you from the train car's speakers? Well, that was the immediate thought I had when I showed up here for Trivia night this past Monday. Every first Mondays of each month, they host a trivia night that can be quite challenging. This past Monday night, the emcee was shouting into a microphone and the speakers obviously needed an upgrade. I wouldn't have minded if they upgraded the emcee also. He obviously was self-serving and chose questions that even MENSA members would have a hard time answering. Seriously, this was a WTFery trivia night. But besides the trivia questions being awful and having eardrum damage after this experience, the place is actually very entertaining and a great local hang-out spot. I was famished when I arrived. There is a window where you order your food, and you take a number to your seat and they bring the food out. I ordered a pumpkin squash salad. After all, fall is arriving. A great salad with roasted squash, pumpkin seeds, spinach and blue cheese. Needless to say, I licked the platter clean. They have an impressive beer list, so if you like beer, DW is your place. I had a glass of white wine. I am trying to cut some carb out of my diet. Overall, this place is fun and the food is decent with an impressive beer list. DW's close proximity to the park, tasty food and rotating beer selection, could be enough for a 4.5-5 star review. The food servers are efficient and friendly which is a plus. However, if you value good service from a bartender, you may want to research other places in the neighborhood. Sure, the majority of the reviews are positive. But if you're not part of the majority (see the faces who wrote positive reviews or visit DW), this place may not be for you. I had a bad experience with a bartender at DW a few months ago but didn't want to be that person who wrote a review based on one experience. I went 3-4 more times after that, but not enough happened to change my opinion about the place. It's a great location, many people go there, but most of the bartenders aren't great I.e. Lack basic social skills and self awareness. Fortunately, there are now more options in Windsor Terrace. :-) In previous years, my softball team and our friends would go to DW. But to be honest, we stopped going. DW is now our last resort place.Why? Simply because we found another bar close by that had better vibes, was more diverse, was more welcome, and definitely more attentive. Also, I'd rather take my wallet and my friends elsewhere. The atmosphere puts the happy in happy hour, proving that good beer doesn't have to be enjoyed in a dark, stanky hole. The big wooden block tables are good for groups and the swinging barn windows invite tons of afternoon sunlight, due to the bar's corner location in this cute neighborhood. The staff is genuinely friendly, and the bartender was very helpful in recommending a good pairing for our food.
