We enjoyed an excellent dinner on Saturday afternoon. The restaurant appeared packed upon entrance but we luckily landed a two top in the back dining room. The bar was full and the dining guests were a combo of singles families and couples. I ordered a beer since we had just left a brewery $9 and my friend, a Sauv Blanc $17. All of the items ordered came out pretty much the same time, which worked that day because we were starving! I enjoyed the RI oysters and mingonette the steak fries with butter and my friend a creamy minestrone with crusty baguette. Server was excellent too, we were back outside in 70 minutes. read more

This spot is always crowded whenever I pass by, so we finally came to check it out. They have a huge patio space to bring your pups, but their wooden interior is quite a vibe too. I liked that all the tables had real candles for some ambiance. We came just for drinks and I had the Public Smash ($16) and Brooklyn Ferry ($17). The public smash had a snowcone topped with a basil for a refreshing flavor while the Brooklyn ferry was a whiskey-forward cocktail. The drinks were decent, but nothing too special. The service was a bit lacking as it took us awhile to order more drinks and ask for the check though. The food also looks quite pricey here too. read more

Henry Public is a great little brunch spot! Initially we were going to have brunch elsewhere, however, the place we had in mind did not open until 2:00 p.m. we were very glad that we stumbled upon Henry Public as the food was really great! The main reason for my four star review is due to the fact that we stood at the front door of the restaurant for quite sometime prior to being greeted/sat. Here is what we had during our visit: - grilled cheese (love the sliced apples on the sandwich!) the French fries are to die for! - hamburger (my boyfriend said it was the best hamburger he has ever had) - juniper pickles (these were some of the best pickles I've tried!) Cocktails and wine are really good here, I had a dirty martini and it was made to perfection. The vibe is exactly what I was looking for and I love the antique decor. Overall the service is a little slow, but the food makes up for that. Would definitely come back to Henry Public! read more

This is a tasty local tavern serving a mix of classic American dishes as well as a selection of both craft and macro brews and also a good mix of cocktails. They tend to get pretty popular on the weekends and late at night as they're one of the few places in the area open late. In terms of cocktails, they have a nice mix. I most recently had the Kings County Sour for $14 which consisted of rye whiskey, lemon, sugar, egg white, and a port float. Tasty cocktail with a good mix of alcohol, sweetness, and sourness and not so overpriced especially for the area. Would recommend. I also recall having one other cocktail which I'm pretty sure was the Brooklyn Ferry what I remember being much more spirit focused and it being good as well. For food, I have had the burger (or they call it a hamburger sandwich) what has a base price of $17 with fries (or as they say French fried potatoes) without any of the extras. The extras include cheese and/or Berkshire bacon what are $2 each. I would recommend the cheese over the bacon which I find a bit overpriced for the quality. The burger is in general excellent and they don't really top it with much else or a sauce relying on the quality of the meat which is quite good. The fries are shoestring with some of them being very crispy and other ones being slightly. I guess my only complaint is that there wasn't enough ketchup for the fries but they'll replenish it as long as they're not too busy. I think of the burger here as a much better version of the nearby more eclectic Hihi Room. It might be less toppings but it's much more worth it especially if you don't want a pound of lettuce and the burger is general is just much tastier. I have also had a steak special which I believe was $30 which also came with fries and the steak (I believe skirt) was topped with some herb butter (very likely chive if I recall.) This was also good but pricey. I personally like this place. They do get a bit too crowded and the prices are a bit high but it's Cobble Hill so both are kind of expected. Will go back time and time again probably trying the turkey sandwich next time. read more

I am SO thrilled that Henry Public is such a close-by option for me, as it's one of my favorite places in Brooklyn for delicious food & drinks! I am literally obsessed with the grilled cheese, and it comes with the best fries. We also love the deviled eggs, the pickles, the donuts at brunch, the cheeseburger, and literally everything else that we've ever tried. And the drinks are amazing & strong. Stopped in for an afternoon lunch? Initially drawn by how cozy this place looked and felt on a chilly December day. But that charm dissipated after having a look at the menu . I don't eat meat, so I stay away from burgers, my only other choice was a grilled cheese sandwich or French toast. The service is still good - the waiters were prompt with food and nice, the setting good... And it may be good for drinks, but we ordered food. The deviled eggs themselves were tasty - maybe not write-home unique, but solidly enough. The burgers though weren't cooked well. They lacked flavor, were too tough (we ordered medium), and sort of meh. The cabbage salad which is usually a favorite was very meh. One of the most Brooklyn Heights bars ever - looks like it was built in the revolution, but also features mezcal and amaro-forward cocktails. The average cocktail is $17, which unfortunately is the median price in these parts. And they're good! But the real star is the turkey leg sandwich. This thing is massive (easily feeds 2) and features shredded, juicy, well-seasoned turkey. Think of it as a turkey sloppy joe. For drinks and bites with friends, this is a solid spot. read more

This place is pretty good on its own and a solid staple of the neighborhood, but this review is dedicated primarily by and far to the menu's true standout, the infamous Turkey Leg Sandwich (aka the TLS): The turkey is so moist and delicious, and the sandwich is so simple, it's really incredible. They use very thick (foccacia style) white bread and pack it full of shredded turkey - maybe 3/4 inches high. Their french fries are skinny and perfectly fried. It was a warm (for January 1) day and we stopped by for an outdoor table for brunch. They have an excellent dining shed with overhead heaters. They were quite busy and a bit short-staffed, but the staff was friendly and their food was excellent! Their French toast had a wonderful crispness on the outside, and was served with maple syrup and raspberry jam. The egg sandwich on brioche bun and side of sausage were delicious. I was really taken aback by the service here. Each server I interacted with talked back to me. The stranger things that happened were I ordered oysters and a burger to share with my date and asked to start with the oysters. A server brought out the burger immediately and had an attitude saying we don't really course here. How can you not course oysters in NYC? A half dozen for $18 and a $18 burger. Yea I want to enjoy my meal coursed. Oysters are literally an appetizer. I asked for share plates and the woman placed two stacked next to me which I thought was super rude to my date and perhaps even mildly racist. HP was completely empty on a summer afternoon, and yet we were scolded and told we could not sit in one of the booths, all of which were empty. No thank you. Wow. The service at Henry Public was astonishingly BAD. A server passed by us several times without even acknowledging us for 10 to 15 minutes before asking if we wanted to be seated. Then, we order some drinks and two burgers, which was the only hot item they had available on the menu due to mechanical issues. After more than an hour of waiting, we had to ask about the status of our food, to which they indignantly replied that it would be out any minute. No apologies or explanation about the wait. When the food arrived we had to ask for BASIC burger toppings -- lettuce and tomatoes -- and they only had lettuce? Seems pretty ridiculous if you're charging $18 for a burger. And when it was time to settle the bill, they tried to charge us for 3 extra beers that we didn't order. I understand that restaurants are understaffed, but our server lacked basic hospitality skills. I won't be taking my business here ever again. read more

Went for brunch today and this pub does not disappoint. My husband had the turkey sandwich and I regret that I didn't get one as well. He let me try it and it was AMAZING! So juicy and tender! YUMMY! We had deviled eggs and Wilkinson's, just yummy! The pub was lovely, spacious and clean. The hostess was missing when we arrived, but the wait staff took great care of us. Definitely will return. Henry Public is the least hospitable pub I've ever been to. Everything about it screams complete indifference to the guest experience, from the service, to the offerings, to the pricing. I don't often leave reviews but I feel like I have to in this case. I work late on weekends, which can be really annoying when you get off and everything is closed except for fast food, but this gem stays open late, and unlike most bars, their kitchen does too. The macaroni was amazing, shell pasta with 4 cheeses and bits of baby asparagus baked in mini cast iron skillet and served up still bubbling. Yeah, I'm so not feeling it. I walked into this place and immediately fell in love with the old timey vibe, the Edison bulbs hanging from the ceiling, the old, tiny booths and pressed tin ceilings. Circa 1938. Not quite Speakeasy, but Post Prohib chic (really, you can tell me I'm talking out of my...) This kind of bar has been popping up on the regular in this part of Brooklyn. But what else hit me as soon as I sat down? The lousy acoustics. Expect to be shouting to the person sitting one foot away. But that wouldn't be so bad, really. I probably would opt to go elsewhere on Atlantic (love that cute new French place that opened up, but it seems to close hella early on a Thursday night) and if I wanted a loud and boisterous setting, Last Exit is right there, too. It's just that the loudness is so at odds with what seems like an intimate vibe. Again, that's not my main issue with Henry Public. It's the utter bull$hit of being cash-only. Seriously. If a tiny one-person operation in a gallery on St. Claude St. in New Orleans can take credit cards when the average tab is $5, so can a "gastropub" where most cocktails are around $13 (I had two decent champagne cocktails that I liked OK, though nothing to write home about). End of story. No sign on the door warning you, either. How incredibly ridiculous to be scrambling for cash in this day and age when there's an app for that. You can keep it. read more

It might be tucked just off the main drag, but at around 3 pm on a Saturday, there were still plenty of people enjoying their afternoon inside Henry Public. I sat at the bar, because with a sweet and competent bartender such as theirs, there's nothing better. A Bloody Henry sounded too good to pass up, and with homemade pickles and the right amount of spice, I know I made the right decision. Just watching the lady do her work, I can tell I want to come back for additional adult beverages, perhaps a Bloody Henrietta (his Michelada-esque sister) or a Public Smash. Having heard so much about the Turkey Leg Sandwich, I couldn't resist this mountain of pulled turkey slapped between two hearty slices of white bread. Beware: this is not a dainty sandwich. The well-seasoned dark meat, in addition to being topped by crispy onions for texture and flavor, is soaked through with gravy. One bite, and it is already falling apart in your hands. Strong and decisive [when it comes to food], I pulled off the top layer of bread and attacked it with utensils. An excellent decision, and the gravy-soaked bottom bread ended up tasting like the best part of Thanksgiving (stuffing). With deliciously crispy thin-cut fries surrounding the entire thing, this was an infinitely satisfying meal. I seem to remember that my girlfriend was also present for this meal, but for some reason, the Turkey Leg is all I can really recall. I know she gave me a bunch of crap about me not listening to her, or something, I don't know, I wasn't really paying attention.* Oh, she did order the bacon, egg & cheese sandwich though. We might have been too late for the home fries I saw across the bar, but the egg was nice and runny and it hit the spot as well. Anyway, Henry Public rocks. A great place to have a drink. We walked in around 10PM, and the place was full, but not crowded. I felt transported to a different era: 19th century saloon. And I liked it. The bartenders were attentive despite the never ending queue for cocktails. Each drink was carefully crafted with precision. The prices for the cocktails were a bit pricey for Brooklyn standards ($10 and $11) but well worth it. Here is the rundown: 1. Kings County Sour - (rye whiskey, lemon, sugar, egg white, port float) Sort of like a whiskey sour but with a nice kick thanks to the egg whites. The cherry garnish was tasty! 2. Wide Awake cocktail - (gin, lemon, ginger (fresh and liqueur and isley scotch) A grown up gin and tonic. I really liked the dried crystallized ginger that garnished the drink. 3. Public Smash - (bourbon, mint, maple syrup, aromatic bitters) Wow this drink was strong and cut to the chase! I did peruse the menu and spied a "marrow bones" dish and although we didn't try it this time, something tells me I will be lured back for more! PS They have coat hooks under their zinc-topped walnut bar. That is always a plus on my list. That means the owner(s) were thoughtful when planning out the place. read more
