I'd first heard of The Double Windsor because of their "no babies after 5:30pm" rule. Yes, they had me there. I live 7 avenue blocks from The Double Windsor and I already felt this could be a bar for me. Secondly, they fried Robicelli's Car Bomb cupcakes on St. Patrick's day. Come on now, you want to go right now don't you. When you get there, make sure you look good and hard at their amazing selection of beers. Helpfully, they are all labeled as to their alcohol percentage. Their happy hour is $3 wells and $2 off taps. With big open windows, the people watching is pretty superlative, not to mention that their roasted veggie sandwich is out of control good. I've been dreaming of eating only that since I was last there. My husband had the burger and fries and said it was a masterpiece as well. I did not notice the aloofness of the bartenders as some other people noted, but I guess after having hit some of the other bars in Pk Slope if the bartender acknowledges me and doesn't spit in my drink, I'm totally cool with them. Also, we talked a bit with one of the owners, who was very friendly and seemed genuinely glad that we want to share our experience at The Double Windsor with him. I think that if you like great beer, a nice atmosphere and some better than average pub-grub you should certainly give this bar a shot. read more

Welcome, DW. I've waited so long for you! This is a really nice, chill, relaxed bar (at least it is on a Tuesday night.) I love that there are no TVs and I hope they never install any. Don't need another sports watching venue, just a bar with a great vibe and beer selection. I'm also in love with the wide plank wood floors. I'm very happy this is so close to my apartment. I love this place! I usually wander in here after buying tickets at the Pavilion, and it's probably my favorite bar in Brooklyn. I've been a few times in the 5-9 pm range, and it has the best vibe. I'd feel comfortable reading a book, writing, working on my laptop, doing shots at the bar with a friend, or just sitting and talking. They have a great beer selection and friendly, no-nonsense bartenders, and I like that. There are usually a few babies in there, but the bartender politely (and now famously) kicked out all the kids at 5. This place made me understand the difference between a pub and a bar. After a long stroll in Prospect Park, Double Windsor is the place to rest your feet! The spot is spacious, inviting and chill. Order drinks at the bar, order food at the window (cash only). Although I'm not much of a beer drinker, the beer selection is impressive! Fortunately, they had Angry Orchard Cider for me. Their fries were banging - brownie points for having Malt Vinegar available to drench them fries in! My friend had their mussels & frites - also very good. The Double Windsor is a peculiar appellation for this Gastropub. It's odd because a double windsor knot is usually associated with a tie. The pub does (k)not strike me as geared towards the tie wearing crowd. If anything it seems that most of DW's patrons either came from a bicycle ride at Prospect Park or are home for the summer from college. It's doubly odd because it's not even on Windsor. It's a block away. The neighborhood is considered Windsor Terrace but ask a local and they'll tell you it is Park Slope. Onto the establishment.... Excellent draught beer selection. I could come back time and time again to sample their ample options. They supposedly change the draft beer choices from time to time which keeps things fresh. I had a Pat LaFrieda burger which was just okay. Although it was thick it didn't even fill the flaky roll it was on. My girlfriend had the mussels which should have been called baby mussels; they were that small. The Mac N cheese was ridiculously amazing. Add bacon for $2. We did. The thing that kept The Double Windsor from being a solid 4 star establishment was the fact that you have to get up and order your food yourself . I don't like the idea of waiting in line to place an order, pay up front (cash only) and then feel obligated to leave a tip. A tip for what? Even more bothersome if having to then go over to the bar to order your drinks. A soda from tap is usually hit or miss and in this case it was a miss. So now I'm leaving another tip for the drinks. After returning to our bench with our order number, I'm yet again obliged to leave another tip for the girl that brings our food out. Call me old fashioned but I like to be served when I go out to eat. I didn't mind ordering from the menu on the chalk board. I'd definitely go back to DW but to drink, not to eat. This is one of the best bars in NYC. We are lucky to have it in South Slope/Windsor Terrace. What's great about it is the following: 1) clientele could not be more diverse (well not a ton of socio-economic diversity) but old school locals, young, old, straight, gay, people of color and everybody there just to chill and chat. 2) Very nice selection of beers and other drinks. 3) Not too expensive. PPW has long needed a great place for the locals to share a beer that isn't served in a plastic cup. This is my favorite bar near my apartment, and my clear go-to. The beer list is great, and the food, to my surprise, is also high-quality stuff. I originally came to The Double Windsor because I heard that it had banned children from the bar (thank god SOMEWHERE is safe from this scourge!). And it's true - no babies! Love it. Fun cocktails (I recommend the Gin Buck), comfortable atmosphere, and friendly crowd. 4 stars instead of 5 because the bartenders aren't always particularly friendly, and because they don't take credit cards. Get the cheeseburger. Whatever else you do in life, get the cheeseburger. There's nothing in particular that makes it so great. Sure, it's grass fed beef but, what isn't in Brooklyn these days. No, no fancy spices or exotic cheeses. No brioche bun or english muffin. In fact, all that it comes with is a little piece of butter-leaf lettuce and a few small slices of tomato and gherkin. It may even look a little small for the $11 it ends up costing with cheese. However, all of these thoughts render meaningless to you as you bite into it and juicy, meaty fat rolls into your mouth. And, to be quit honest, some may find it too greasy but, for those of you who don't count calories or worry about burning that weight off before summer or simply don't give a damn; this is an experience not to be missed. ...Hopefully I haven't oversold it. Seriously though, everything on their menu is fantastic and done right. Cooked to temp. Delicious. Simple. "Menu?" you ask. It's a blackboard on the wall as you walk in. Maybe six or seven items listed (plus a special that is by the counter in the wall around the corner where you place your order). Place your order, take your number, and the lovely waitress will bring you whatever slice of heaven you chose. I waste hours reading and eating and drinking here. Fantastic atmosphere. To top it all off the beer selection is perfect. always a wide array of choices and (for those of you from Colorado or who just love a good stout) they often Left Hand's Milk Stout on tap. My co-worker, who also lives in the neighborhood, and I had always meant to try out DW, but ran there immediately after hearing that they banned children after 5pm. Being that we work with kids, a child-free drinking zone in the Slopey area was a godsend. At 6pm on a Saturday, the vibe was pretty mellow, lots of different aged people, only a teeny bit hipstery. It was fairly crowded, and K and I managed to get the last 2 seats at the bar. We ordered up some barleywine, booyah 11% alcohol. We appreciated the coat hooks under the bar. The food system is sort of weird - I would prefer placing my order with the bartender, but instead one has to go up to a separate window to order & pay. At least the food is delivered to your seat as well as bussed after eating. Food was reasonably priced. We had each ordered a sandwich and a salad, and the guy working the food counter warned me not to miss out on the fries. So I took one for the team and got my sandwich with fries. K's grilled cheese on artisan bread looked good and met her approval. My pulled pork was drippy, meaty, tangy, and divine. Truly a masterpiece of pork. After 3 barleywines each, we realized it was time to go when a) we kept falling off the stools, and b) when we realized that it was after 10 and the place had become overrun by hipsters. This is the best craft beer bar in Brooklyn - and there typically too many good beers on the menu to try in one visit. The beers here are always super fresh, the tap lines always clean, and the beer selection is both carefully and well curated, and always changing. They also have growlers. The locals love this place, and why shouldn't they - they are blessed to have this spot in their neighborhood. Ileana S. picked Double Windsor for our Friday night boozefest [with the help of Yelp, of course] because 1. it's located conveniently between us and 2. they serve flights. Yes, please. I had never heard of most of the brews on the beer menu. Which pretty much means that we're in business. 4 flights for $8.00? Not too shabby. This gave us the opportunity to try a bunch of beers, which ultimately helped us make the [very difficult] decision of what we were going to drink for the rest of the night. The flights are served on what looks like a fraternity paddle, which is um...charming? Maybe. The hardest part was getting the paddle off of the bar and walking the 25 feet back to our table. A little help would have been nice, Mr. Bartender...if nothing else but to help me lift it off the bar surface! Nothing makes me work up an appetite like drinking beer. After much deliberation [read: flirting with the cute girl that works at the window in the kitchen towards the back], I decided on the baked mac and cheese. It was pretty good. Ileana got the catfish sandwich, which came with a big ol' healthy salad on the side. Seriously, it was huge. Too bad it was literally just a pile of lettuce. But, still pretty impressive. DW is CASH ONLY. FYI. Grab a bunch of cash in advance so that you can avoid those pesky ATM fees. DW has less-than-ideal seating. There are a few communal tables in the center of the bar, which would be great if I was trying to hit on a stranger, but not so great if I'm going there to hang with a friend or woo a date. I like their beer list. Their clientele is generally on the borderline-obnoxious side. Mostly if I don't yell to get the bartender's attention they don't notice me. It's crowded, a lot of the time. One of my preferred bartenders works here on days I can't remember but it makes me happy to see him. I'd day I have success actually staying here about 1 out of every 10 times I go. Sometimes it's filled with too loud too drunk clientele (and holy shit the acoustics) and other times it's filled with a bunch of Park Slop-Windsor Terrace parents feeding their kids $15 mac and cheese. Neither is a group of people I want to spend time with. I wish they'd just outright ban kids, but I know the consequences of that in this neighborhood. I've heard their food is excellent, but unless they add a vegan option I'll never know. When this bar first opened, it was pretty great. Never crowded (at least when I went) and the beers were cheap, though a little funny tasting at times. A little bit of smugness was in the air, but it was bearable. Fast forward to now. Every experience I've had here recently is negative. Just a little pricey, and the food didn't look exciting enough to bother ordering. They were out of house made beef jerky, which was kind of disappointing. The beer list, on the other hand, is really well put together. The draft beers especially are full of esoteric microbrews, which lead me to the 4x4oz beer flight, served on a cute little paddle. $6 during happy hour, 2 more the rest of the day. Outside of happy hour, there's isn't much to drink under $6. They have a decent cocktail list, two drinks based in good rum and fentiman's ginger ale. The one which also contained pineapple, lime, ginger reduction was okay, but needed clearer flavors. Bar seemed to be stocked with good liquor. I'm tempted to give them a bonus star for banning children after 5pm. My bartender was super friendly and attentive at midnight on a weekday. read more

The reason DW gets 5 stars are numerous: The draught beer list is extensive and changes often. They have a variety of seating options. They have food. It is close to my house. The overflow guys from Farrell's buy me beers (they wave from across the room, raise their glass, and never try to talk to me). It is a good place to stop after a summer concert. The are anti-baby after a certain time of day (listen breeders, kids in bars are fine by me, but only until dark. Then the bar belongs to singletons and their lonely, babyless misery. You've got kids, and maybe a spouse, and probably a super nice apartment. Be considerate: don't rub your $700 stroller in our faces while we drink beer we probably can't afford.). Other patrons will talk to you. It is near the subway. They have a lot of windows. I could go on, but then what wonderful mysteries would be left for you to discover? read more

Finally a great beer bar that's local to me! Great, relaxed atmosphere and some well thought out drinks. Bare bones, not pretentious and the music selection really shows that the owner cares about this establishment. I could actually sit there all night and listen to him DJ most nights. My only problem with this bar isn't the one tv playing 'the game' (which you could easily go to Farrell's across the street for), or with the children until 5pm allowance, but with the disinterested bar staff and then the Sunday afternoon hootnanny. Don't get me wrong, I don't need to be best friends with the bartender but a staff that makes you feel like you're bothering them just to get served isn't really that welcoming. The worst are Sunday afternoons, which are fantastic until the local band rolls in around 5 and takes over 1/4 of the bar playing cover songs. If I wanted to hear drunken locals who want to live their days of a garage band I'd stay home and watch youtube. Double Windsor, please if you're going to have a band, please vet them first so they don't spoil the atmosphere. CakeShop has such a good reputation and this is simply not on par. Too many times have I been really enjoying myself at this bar only to be forced out by the caterwaul of weekend band warriors. For now I'll take my business to Beer Table where the entertainment isn't forced on me and the atmosphere is sublime. read more

I liked this place. I'm weird about "hipster places" but I really liked it. I ordered the grapefruit cocktail and I didn't like it at all. Then the ginger one and if was great. Prices are higher - $8-10 for a small cocktail. For dinner I got the catfish sandwich. It came with a delicious aioli and French fries. Yummmm. Wasn't worth the $13, though. I would've paid no more than $7- it wasn't anything special. They had a decent (small) menu. Mac and cheese, a $17 salad, grilled cheese, etc. it was cool. It wasn't the typical bar food. First time I walked into the place it was loud, there were no seats available, and there no one to greet me or give me instructions. I didn't know there was a "system". I was tired and hungry and not in the mood so I left. My second visit I sat at the bar and figured out the tricks. Seating is open...sit anywhere you want, even at the community table. If you want a drink - order at the bar. If you want food - order at the window near the kitchen. The entire place is cash only so be prepared. Now for the rest: Bartender was nice and served us quick. There was a pretty decent rotating tap selection. Food was pretty good. I tried the sriracha wings and they were excellent. I thought they would be too hot for my wimpy self but I thoroughly enjoyed the hot kick combined with all the flavor. My boyfriend and I were going to look at an apartment in South Slope, and decided on the Double Windsor as a meeting point beforehand. We saw on the map that it was right off the subway. Beer: check. Food: check. Let's meet here. I arrived about 30 minutes before BF and to my delight, this is one of those spots where a lady can sit alone, with a beer and a book, and not feel the least bit uncomfortable. In fact, there were other ladies (and men) there doing the very same thing. It's now been almost a week since we've moved into the aforementioned apartment, and already this is becoming our go-to spot. For one, the beer selection is excellent. In the 3 or 4 times I've been in there, I've never seen the same beer twice. Their happy hour runs until 7pm, I believe, and all draughts are $4 (save for a few specialty ones). I should note here, although I'm sure this won't come up too often, during one happy hour, I only wanted a half-pint as I had to leave in a few minutes. Without any kind of fuss, the bartender handed it over for $2. Some places can be kind of difficult about that sort of thing. Moving on. They have a somewhat limited but delicious food menu. You could easily eat here as a "bar food" type deal, or a proper dinner. I will most certainly be eating here again. Finding a good neighborhood bar is like finding "the one". It's a special feeling. I was surprised to read so many reviews that were negative about the staff. I've never had anything other than great service from friendly bartenders. There are definitely nights when they're swamped, but I find I'm usually acknowledged if the bartender can't come right over -- I appreciate that. The patrons tend to be pretty friendly too -- there are a lot of folks from around the neighborhood who I've seen around and met here. The music selection is great and I love the rotating microbrew menu. Sometimes, on weekends, it's a bit more crowded than I'd like -- but I suspect that can be said of any bar in New York. The DW serves food as well, and while it's a bit pricey, it's really delicious. I wasn't going to add this but Jerome's review pushed me over the edge: I've never been puked on in the DW. Great value, with respect to the quality of beers - really well priced. I went to the Double Windsor with 2 friends on a hot & humid Saturday at around 5:30pm, so it wasn't crowded at all - maybe at 40% of capacity. We went to pregame, do a few shots and grab a bite before heading to the Siren Music Festival on Coney Island...sponsored by Bud - so we went to get a buzz with good, quality, strong beers. The Windsor afternoon crowd was mixed, from age 22 to 62, everyone was just chillin, having burgers, salads and having a good time. Seemed like a no stress spot you could drink at all day. The bartender was this really laid back easy going type who didn't say much...except to suggest a good beer. Most beers were strong and cheap - good bang for the buck. The cider beer was also quite nice. The Whiskey shots were $5 each and the service was quick. Likes: - Great quality beer selection - The inexpensive beer flight (sampler) - Great burger - Easy going staff - Good atmosphere - Good service - burger came out fairly quickly - Close to the train station (1 block) Dislikes: - N/A It's definitely a good spot worth checking out, there is no sign, so it's a little incognito and plain Jane, but it works well. Extra points: I left my favorite hat there, I called 20 minutes later and they grabbed it and held it all night until one of my friends could pick it up...nice customer one service. Went here after the National show in Prospect Park. The show ended 10ish and me and my crew were looking for some libations, and most importantly, food* One member of our group, who happens to live up the street from the Windsor, recommended we go there. I was kinda tired/out of it when we arrived. I turned my eyes to the big chalkboard and all I saw was RIBS. I exited the conversation because I only had big slabs of meat on the brain. Dinner was served pretty promptly and the ribs turned out to be too spicy for me :-( Bummer. Josh H graciously offered to trade me his half eaten burger for the ribs. BEST EXCHANGE OF MY LIFE. This burger easily falls into my top 10 in New York list. The meat was juicy, seasoned excellently, and the bacon was applewood smoked. Just GET THIS BURGER. 3 stars: Great food. I've had their burger a few times and it's always done perfectly. Their fries are pretty great, but if you're feeling guilty, go with the side salad. Awesome dressing (some sort of rosemary vinaigrette). Decent beer selection. Just because it's large (compared to other bars within walking distance) doesn't make it amazing. Lagunitas and Allagash? These can be found quite easily 'round these parts. 1 star lost: It was freezing in there! I am all for having the doors and windows open when it's nice out, but my friends and I were wearing our winter jackets and scarves at the table and were still uncomfortably chilled. 1 star lost: My second beer of the night had about 2 inches of head. When I pointed this out to the bartender, he begrudgingly said he'd buy me a second, as my choice beer had just been tapped. Cool, No problem.
