Tamale Breakfast

The food was AMAZING, had trouble picking what I want to eat this morning, one of the new waitresses helped me out and it was the best decision I ever made, meat is cooked to perfection, love the peppers, cheese, sauces and the hash browns as well. The ambiance of the diner is beautiful and old school, I'm a sucker for mom and pop diners, great playlist of music and it felt like an authentic old school diner to come around break and lunch. Would definitely come back here again!

I'll start with the positives: Omelets are delicious, eggs are fluffy, hash browns are crispy and not greasy, biscuits and gravy are tasty although biscuit is a bit dry, coffee is good. Negatives: extremely small space making you feel very cramped, small bathroom, not the cleanest feeling restaurant I've been in, food took a long time to get to the table, NO KIDS MENU, expensive!! Our waitress was great at first. She refilled our coffee's quickly and I was very happy about that. But once the food came, she disappeared and we never saw her again. I don't know if she went home, or was on break, she never communicated with us but we never saw her again and we never got more coffee. This is such a tiny, cramped, hole in the wall diner but they're charging big restaurant prices. For 2 coffees and 2 apple juices we paid $13!!!!!!! I had a create your own omelet and my husband had the brisket hash and ordered a side of biscuits and gravy. We ordered the 2x2x2 with chocolate chip pancakes for our kids to split since there was no kids menu. Our bill came to $53 before tip! For a tiny little hole in the wall diner? Nope. Not paying those prices to be squeezed into a booth feeling like sardines. The omelet was good, but not that good.

I know The Diner is a Norman staple, but I was pretty underwhelmed at my breakfast. All the food was just okay. The hash browns were the best thing in my opinion, and my friend's tamale breakfast was pretty tasty. Maybe I should have ventured out and got something more exciting like the tamale. But, I love biscuits and gravy, so that is usually my go to when I visit a breakfast joint. The gravy here tasted like it was made from a mix and the biscuits seemed like they were mass produced elsewhere, so it was a big miss for me. The positives were that the restaurant was very cute and offered a quintessential diner experience. Our waitress was very friendly and the prices were quite affordable. So it definitely has some good things going for it, but to me, it left a little to be desired.

This place looks like a hole in the wall and it is. It's also a great diner. The name says it simply and that how the food is cooked. I judge a breakfast place on how I order my eggs. If I say over medium and they don't know or look at me funny then I just say over easy and I get over medium. This place knew. Service was great. The decor was dated and old but I like the rustic look. Plus it's in Norman Oklahoma and that's how many places are. The food was really good and felt fresh. Eggs were cooked perfect. The link sausage had that skin that pops when you bite down and was flavorful. The oatmeal was thick. Some people like it more runny or with milk but I enjoyed it. It felt like it coated your ribs. Overall you shouldn't pass through and not get breakfast there. Great place to get a simple home cooked breakfast.

The Diner is a lot smaller than I thought it'd be so be prepared to wait if you go on the weekend. We got lucky and was able to be seated right away. I enjoyed the food and our waiter. I didn't feel like it was anything super extra special but was the food was good.

We had a really awesome waitress and the service was great! The food was just average. Although I will say the biscuits were pretty divine! They were soft and texturally perfect!

Perfect breakfast place. I've lived in Norman my whole life and have heard about this place for years. It's pretty small so any time I've tried to go it's been packed with a long line. The kids woke us up early so we figured this would be perfect timing. Went at 7:30ish and there were plenty of a tables open. It has a cute classic diner atmosphere. Restaurant was clean and all of the staff were wearing masks. The service was great and the waitstaff came by several times to make sure we were well taken care of. I ordered the 2x2x2 and the pancakes were delicious. Eggs and bacon were good too and everything came out piping hot fresh off the griddle. Husband had the chicken fried steak and it was sooo good! I'm definitely getting that next time for myself. The gravy was really good too. My son had the chocolate chip pancake but I stole a few bites myself, yum!

southside burger, bbq sauce too sweet.

Basic diner food. Really great service. Quickly seated compared to some of their popular competitors nearby.

Norman breakfast staple. Just an old fashioned diner just like the name says. Can be a bit of a wait but that's just part of it.

Food: 4.9 (Brussels were a miss) Service: 7 out of 5 (Thank…read moreyou, Madison F.) Ambiance: 5 (cool building!) We ended up at Scratch after trying to go to a nearby restaurant and it didn't work out. I called to see if we could be seated at Scratch without a wait and the person answering the phone was SO kind. Turns out he was the host. We were seated immediately and Madison F. took our drink and app order. The green chile hummus was OUTSTANDING although I would have liked some carrots or celery with the pita instead of the olives. Cosmopolitan and Old Fashioned were well mixed. The entrees? Holy cow. I had the coffee crusted pork tenderloin with Parmesan risotto and lemon Brussels sprouts. The pork tenderloin was the BEST I've ever had, hands down. The risotto was creamy and delish. Not a fan of the Brussels sprouts as they were too oily. Husband had the Creole seafood pasta and he ate every bite. We will absolutely be back.

Interior- the entire place looks like a social media post with intention out behind creating…read morememoeable moments of togetherness, laughter, and selfies. Lots of faux foliage and neon cursive isms on the walls. We sat at the bar, which gave a beautiful display of the spirits inventory. The menu gave so many good savory options for the Fall weather from pork to beef to seafood, and appeared to feature mushrooms in a lot of their dishes. The bartender said he just started, so we knew to expect novice service. We had to flag him down for every order with only 4 people at the bar and when another staff member came back to help, neither of them could answer questions about the menu items such as whether or not the risotto had mushroom chunks in it. Fried green tomatoes - The plating speaks for itself, so I'll leave that to the readers' discretion. This a favorite for me wherever I go, but this was so bland, I was confused by the lack of flavor medley you usually get with this mixture. It appeared to have pepper seeds but I couldn't find any to determine what they were using for the heat component. They might have opted not to include a pepper. It was entirely watery and watered down. The tomatoes were breaded with more flour than cornmeal, which is fine, but we couldn't figure out what they were seasoned with. With the amount of water left around the slice causing a hard to cut, I stopped at one. This appetizer is served with your option of pimento cheese or black bean corn salsa. We chose the salsa, which is comprised of black beans, corn, tomato, red onion and traces of maybe cilantro or parsley. The buttermilk ranch has something like dill or similar note added into it, which helped make up for the lack of flavoring, but didn't cover the problematic bite. But let's get into the exciting stuff: We ordered the 4 dishes that stood out most based on sides pairings. Meatloaf: a slice of dense, somewhat mushy meatloaf loaded with flavor and topped with heat in the form of a tomato base sauce. It is mentioned on the menu that the space is spicy, but it really give us a surprising heat that balances well with the sweetness and savory notes. It was served on a plateau of red creamed potatoes. Listed as mashed, but definitely creamed. The potatoes mix very well with the flavor able oils from the meatloaf. This dish is also served with a seasonal vegetable which turned out to be eggplant and red bell pepper. I ended up picking out the red bell pepper to add to the risotto that came with the pork loin and leaving the eggplant. Pork tenderloin - encrusted with coffee grounds - a very interesting take on slow cooked pork. The risotto was creamy and soaked up the flavor from the tenderloin, which made for a wonderful infusion. Chicken Alfredo - this creamy dish was an easy fall weather pick. We took this home and the reheat was even thicker and flavorful from the seasoning and juices on the chicken. Salmon - this was served on a bed of thick, hearty risotto with lemon-fried Brussels sprouts. You can't taste lemon, so I think the acidity might have helped balance the Brussels as they cooked down. I prefer a crispy Brussels, so not my cup of tea, but the flavor was nice with the salmon's seasoning. Overall, the service, plating, and quality testing could improve the experience, but I don't want that to overshadow the incredible flavor pairings the kitchen put out for this first visit. Very much looking forward to returning for the next menu turnover to see what amazing plates Scratch will create
