This was our 2nd visit to the new location in the last year. I'm happy to say there's been a vast improvement of their inventory. Hubby & I spent a good hour going up & down the aisles this morning Sunday around 11:30am. We were looking for spice organizers and found what we needed. And to top it off, they were having a 30% off friends and family sale off most items in the store. We were very pleased their small kitschy items were back. Items you don't need but want. Orders cannot be edited once placed, even shortly after checkout, which often results in unwanted or duplicate items being shipped. In my case, shipments have arrived incomplete, yet returns are still pushed to in-store visits rather than offering streamlined return shipping. For customers who make an effort to meet minimum order thresholds and consolidate purchases, the lack of flexibility is frustrating. The garment bags in particular were disappointing in quality -- bulky and lint-shedding -- not what I expected at this price point. The issue feels less like individual staff and more like backend systems that aren't customer-friendly. Until the ordering and returns process improves, I'll likely limit purchases to only items I can evaluate in store. read more

I take the elevator near Trader Joe to the 2nd floor. There's a security guy upstairs at the parking lot. Best yet, just drive your car up to 2nd floor of parking lot. This place is sparkling clean. My original 2013 review is sorely out of date and unhelpful now that this location has moved from 4th Street to 9th Street. To reach the new location by car, enter the shopping center on the Bryant side and drive up the ramp. Don't make my rookie mistake and park downstairs by Trader Joe's to take the elevator up. You're not going to want to deal with getting your large purchases from store to car that way. If you go up the ramp you'll find oodles of parking, with online order pick-up spots as well. The reason I've removed a star from my previous rating is that this location isn't as well-stocked as Corte Madera, even though I think they've been here a spell and seem established otherwise? For example, a bin I needed wasn't going to be available for WEEKS at 9th Street, meanwhile Corte Madera had over 70 in stock. In fact, that whole bin area with all the variations was sparse every time I visited over the course of two weeks. I ended up having to drive to Marin more than once for my project. I know, I know...first-world problem. But if getting organized is part of your new year plans and you don't have easy access to a car, be advised that you might encounter some obstacles. It was also challenging to get all the basic chrome shelving components I needed. I'll still be coming here first, though, hence the 4 stars. Plus, if something you want is out of stock in the store, they offer free shipping to your home. So if you don't require instant gratification, that's a good solution! read more

There is always a line . Terrible customer service. Is important to them to have a greeter at the door but people standing in line to pay. I asked the woman at the register if there was someone else that could help find a garment rack that I found a display one . She did not even reply. People in this type of work hate their job and the paying clients pay the price. And on top their bathroom is out of order . They got two bathrooms . In a house we recently purchased there was an old elfa closet system from the container store. One of the pool drawers didn't have the piece that fit on the rolling rack so you could pull it in and out. I took the measurements and pictures and went to the container store on ninth Street in San Francisco. This happened to me MLK day. I referenced that because it may have explained the shortage and incompetency of the staff. On that day, when I was seeking help, the first clerk literally rolled their eyes at me when I asked for help. They left and another sales person came out who then explained it was their very first day, but they would try to help me. I was passed off to no less than three people. Each of these people were nice, but didn't seem to understand their stock or what they were doing. Eventually, someone manning the register who appeared to be in a position of authority said they could order the part for me. I paid for it and they said the container store would contact me. After three weeks I had not heard from the container store so I called to inquire about my order. The person answering the phone said oh it wasn't an order they bring it up as if you had paid for it and taken it with you. However, they honored the sale and said they had the piece in stock. I made arrangements to come the next day. When I showed up, no one knew what I was talking about. My receipt could not be used. My telephone couldn't be used. After the initial sales clerk found someone else they found my package right behind the register with a big note with my name on it. Again someone who appeared to be a manager, then helped me out. She questioned whether it was the right size. I didn't have the measurements on me assuming that they ordered what they said would work but said I would call her if it wasn't. Sure enough when I got home. The part was too small. I called the store and asked to speak with Anne, who is the person who had helped me in the end. And was it with a client and I was told that she would call me back as soon as she was out at 4:30 PM. Since the store was closing at 6 PM I called back at 4:35 when I had not heard from Anne. I was again told she was still with a client and they promised that she would call me back. After no phone call I called at 5:40 PM and once again received assurance that she would call me as soon as she was done with the next client. I did not receive a call that night nor the next day. Finally, on the third day I took the basket drawer in with me along with the piece that is too small and went into the store to see if they could match it up. Today's experience was unrivaled for rudeness and poor customer service. Apparently they no longer make this type of closet, but instead of apologizing and saying this seems like an old system we don't have a part. It's changed over the sales person told me it was not at all the closet part it doesn't belong in a closet. She doesn't know how I got it. I showed her pictures of the closet system installed and she said "well we don't have it. There's nothing like this. Let me I can show you what we have." I kindly replied that if they no longer make that it's fine. I just need to know if I can get a replacement part or not. The sales clerk kept insisting it was not a closet draw. Having made three trips to the container store been treated rudely each time I simply returned the piece that was too small and left. I'm writing this review because every person in that store is rude. Has no kindness to their customers. Really and truly if they had simply said "we're really sorry we don't make a closet insert like this any longer. I don't think we can a replacement part." I would've been fine. It's understandable if they no longer make the same equipment. But that no one was able to tell me that at any stage before we got to ordering the wrong part and when they did, I was scolded by a sales clerk because I was simply asking this is what's in my closet now do you have the piece that I need? The store is never crowded when I'm in there so I'm assuming that everyone knows that it is a horrible place to shop and I would avoid it at all costs. We worked with Louis at the Container Store to design and have installed their new line of Preston custom cabinets. We could not be more thrilled with Louis's expertise, creativity, talent, and attention to detail. We also cannot say enough about his patience. He came to our home, measured our spaces, listened to our needs, made excellent suggestions, came up with an amazing design that showed he really listened to us, while also anticipating needs we didn't even know we had. He never lost his patience when we kept wanting to tweak small things and even when we decided to completely redesign a major part of the project, and he was always available to answer questions and respond to our concerns. He helped us navigate our truly horrendous HOA approval process and held our hand through the installation. He ensured that we were assigned the very best installation team, and Victor and his crew were excellent. There was a small hiccup with the wrong piece being sent from the factory, but everyone worked together to solve the problem, and, in the end, it caused only a short delay in completing the installation. The cabinets look wonderful and are exactly what we need for much less than it would have cost for us to go with one of the custom cabinet stores we had been directed to. I used to go to the Container Store near Market St but that closed down, so this was the only one left in SF. Very friendly and helpful staff. They helped me tie up two containers together and added a handle which made it a LOT easier to take home on the bus, so I was very happy with that. Located on a busy street. Find parking in a parking lot structure. We always come here for things around the house. They have a lot of selection of items here. Literally, anything you can think of when it comes to containers and little useful home things. After the holidays, they have great sales on gift boxes and gift wrap. The only option when calling is to speak to a space designer, which would be fine, but more often than not, no one picks up the phone, and there is no way to leave a message. There is no option to speak with the store manager or a salesperson! Also, after much back and forth about an incorrect order placed in Corte Madera, I visited the new and lovely San Francisco location and thought all was in order. I liked that they had a designated area for curbside pick up, which is in the parking structure (and free for pick ups). The Container Store needs to stop selling, "Richard's Moth Repellent herbal sachets." It does just the opposite. Yesterday I looked in my closet in absolute HORROR to see a "live moths farm "on the sachet and a giant hole on my new cashmere-sweater, behind the sachet, where they are feeding. Small white winged moths crawling all over. It happened to another sweater and there's holes in all my wool clothes as they migrated to other sweaters in my closet. I'm complaining to this manufacturer asap. I'm writing to warn others, don't use this product!!!! I found other reviewers on Amazon who had the same horrible experience with it !! read more

I've never stepped foot in The Container Store until today and it was an interesting journey, to say the least. I read an article online and somehow was swayed to purchase two Small Natural Seagrass Belly Baskets. I thought they could double as storage containers in my room, but also a cute bag for going out. I received an email stating that my order would be ready for pickup in store around 4pm, however my gripe was the lack of communication as to if there would be delays of the product arriving on time to the store, and its current location. When the day came, I entered the store and was told by the sales associate at the register that there was a possibility the baskets would be delayed, however after connecting with another sales associate, she told me that I would have to wait 15 more minutes for someone to come down with the baskets. I wandered aimlessly around the store, looking at containers, and left the store about to catch the bus to another store. Ironically enough, I received a text alert on my phone that my order was ready to pickup in store and I speed walked back in. When I received the baskets, I wanted to see how it would look on me from a third person point of view, basically my reflection in the mirror. It's shocking how this store does not have one single mirror, besides one in the Women's bathroom. After much contemplation, I ended up returning the baskets because even though they were affordable, the quality of the items were not up to par. If you live close by to an Ikea or Restoration Hardware, I'd advise investing more in your home furnishings there. read more

But cute containers the employees were very nice and helpful due to my sciatica I had to sit down so they gave me a chair,it's disability accessible it has a ramp so if your in a wheelchair go up ramp to the elevator if you're able to walk up they hv stairs they have carts in the front of the store. What they have here that's pretty cool that we came across if you're strictly gluten-free vegan and eco-friendly they had some really cool stuff for like lunch bags containers bottles which were up stairs towards the elevator,They were pretty reasonable starting price $10.99on up to like $30 so come check out this store you might find something that you like. A member of my HOA recommended the Elfa free-standing closet system from the Container Store. After checking it out online, I decided to make an appointment to meet with a store associate. I tried using Ikea's closet system, but I was very disappointed that they don't help you in store. They just give you a computer and tell you to build it yourself. Not at The Container Store. I gave the dimensions of my closet and Jennifer was very knowledgeable. She gave me several options to customize my Elfa system, and printed out the blueprints for it. She didn't press me on buying the closet at that moment, which I appreciate. I was waiting to her from other bids, so I wanted to make the most informed choice before buying. I went back about a week or so later, and another store associate helped me. I made a few tweaks after doing more product searches for the Elfa system online. The associate asked if I wanted to pay for installation, and I said no. She was surprised and basically said good luck to me... My dad and I are very handy and we did build it in 2 nights. It's a comment that I didn't really appreciate, but not care enough to really complain to someone. I also didn't order the drawer knobs because I didn't like the ones they offered. She warned that other knobs may not fit I used to work at a Home Depot, and I know there are knobs that can fit. Anyway, after the changes were made, I waited until there was a good cash back deal on Rakuten, and bought the system. So I technically got the closet tax free. I ended up switching a few of the products (I switched a static shelf for a gliding shelf, and I'll probably buy hooks). And that's what I like about the Elfa system is that I can modify it for any changes I need for years to come (well, as long as the Elfa system exists). I plan on customizing it with marble contact paper for a more polished look. I will say, though, you get what you pay for. Some of the drawers aren't aligned as straight as I want them to be, but they're not noticeable. Another bid I received was nearly $4k, while this closet was $1200. I'm sure the more expensive one would've been really nice, but considering I have property and supplemental taxes to pay, I went for the less expensive option. Plus, my HOA basically recommended it, so that's why I went for this system. As far as the store is concerned, it's your standard store. The store associates have been very helpful, but they seem very busy. It took awhile to get some parts replaced. Because I'm more of an online shopper, I just basically use The Container Store as a place for pick-up (I hate paying for shipping). If they don't have the item in the store, however, they will order it and deliver it to your home for free. read more

For a smaller city location, they have a good amount of options for basic city-living needs. The parking here is impossible if you drive (and want to conveniently lug items to your car). Shopping online to curbside pickup is great in theory, but wait/delay times make the underground parking situation taxing on time. Eight years ago I purchased my free-standing Elfa shelving during a remodel. Recently, I had their installers come out to take apart the shelving so that I could paint my closet and replace the carpeting. They charged a bit more than $100 for the job, which they did quite well. Now that the new carpet and paint have been installed/ completed I needed them to return to reinstall the shelving. I'd also bought a few new pieces for the closet since some of the smaller plastic pieces were worn out. I was told for them to return to reinstall the shelving the cost would be $500+, which seemed ridiculous since they'd only charged me $100+ for the removal. I was told by their customer service department they charge a 25% fee from the original purchase price for the reinstallation. Even on shelving that's used/eight years old! To me this seems like an unfair business practice. They've lost my business! read more

I wish there were a better way to express my overall experiences with The Container Store, since a star rating just doesn't capture them. I've been a customer for the past 4 years and have spent a total of probably $500 there, so I'm not their biggest customer. But I appreciate the store, and every interaction I've had with the actual *staff* has been positive. It's unfortunate that my most recent experiences have been negative, but I'm still giving them an average of 3 stars. As of a few months ago, it would've been a solid 5. About 6 months ago I came in looking for a particular type of container that I haven't been able to find anywhere else -- 14" long by 4x4", with an airtight lid. I came in and, after a pleasant half-hour of perusing, found just what I needed. I bought 10 of them to see how well they worked for my needs, and left, a happy shopper. A couple of months ago I went back to pick up another 15 or 20 of them, but they weren't on the shelf, and I couldn't find the "shelf talker" (the little card with the name and price of the item) anymore. I went home, looked through their website and found the item (it said there were 9 in stock), and printed out its page (with the SKU, etc.) A few weeks later I returned with the print-out and showed it to a sales associate, asking if they could help me find them. She was unable to do so, either on the shelves or on their site; her explanation was that they must've been discontinued, and any trace of them scrubbed from their system. I could accept the former, but the latter seemed odd. Sure enough, when I got home again, I found them on their site. This time I decided to try to order them on-line, and if they could indeed find them, to have them held for me. I placed my order for the last 9, and paid for them. Strangely, the site said that I could either have them shipped to me, which would take 5 business days, or I could collect them from the store, a week from now! I called and asked an associate why it would take a week for them to get something off the shelf (or out of the back) and bring it downstairs. His explanation was that due to the pandemic, they had reduced staffing and it just took longer than usual. OK... So I waited the week, got a message that my purchase was ready, and came in to pick them up. I work until 6pm. Yelp said that they were open until 7pm, so I got off work a few minutes early, grabbed a cab at 5:50 and headed over. Arriving at 6:03, I found the door locked, and on the door it said that they were open until 6. A security guard was standing inside the door. I explained the situation and asked if he could just have a staff member get my bag from the "hold" area and bring it to me. Nope. "Come back tomorrow". So I caught a cab back home, empty-handed, and $25 poorer. Tonight I got off work at 5:45 and had a cab waiting. We got to the front door at 5:55. The doors were locked. I knocked. No response. I noticed a doorbell to one side and pushed it. Nothing. Pushed it again. Nope. I discovered that if I looked in the furthest window to the right, I could see an employee behind the counter. I tapped on the glass to get their attention, and pantomimed that I was there to pick up something I'd already paid for. She came over to the door, a security guard with her. He opened the door, and I explained my situation. I also said "It's 5:56; why are the doors locked?" The guard replied "Because we're about to close". "'About to close' isn't the same as 'closed'," I pointed out. I showed them my phone so they could see that I was correct about the time. "You need to get here earlier" was his comment. No, I bloody-well DON'T "need to get there earlier". If I'm there before closing time, that means that the store is OPEN. And I'll bet $20 that if I asked corporate headquarters about this, they would agree. I wasn't asking to be allowed to come in and browse for an hour, just for them to get my already-paid-for items and bring them to me. The sales associate asked to see my confirmation number. As I was searching through the e-mails on my phone to locate it, the guard kept going on and on about how I couldn't just show up right before they were due to close and expect to get any help. He went on in this passive-aggressive way about how he "hoped my day would get better"; as if it was somehow my fault for expecting a store to be open during its stated business hours. I found the confirmation number and showed it to her, and asked her if she couldn't've just found my purchase under my name. She said "yes, I guess so", and went off to get my purchase. The guard re-locked the door and sauntered away, enjoying his 5 minute power-trip. The sales associate was gone for about 5 more minutes and finally, a different one came downstairs with a bag, which she brought to me. This experience left a seriously sour taste in my mouth about TCS, which is a shame since it was so unnecessary. read more

For context, I rarely go to The Container Store, but out of convenience and proximity, I took a chance there. I bought two plastic boxes to store Christmas ornaments and a 90 inch artificial Christmas tree post-holidays. The ornament box was $6-7, which was fair, but I felt that the large 38 inch box I bought for my tree was not manufactured well and barely contained my tree once broken down into 30 inch segments (this box cost around $28, but was discounted by 5% thanks to a coupon I had from a previous purchase). I had to tape the box shut with packaging tape and spent a good 10 minutes wrestling and sitting on the box to close it. The check out line had 6 or 8 windows available but only ONE register open and clerk available (talk about efficiency much?). Mind you, this was around 6pm on a weekday, which is generally a busy time where people just want to do their errands and go home as quickly as possible. The customer service and resolution for this store in particular was both inefficient and careless. The checkout computer systems went down while I was making my purchase for the large box, a day after my small ornament box purchase, and to my dismay, I was double charged for swiping my card at two different registers. The clerk had reassured me that she would cancel the double charge if both swipes were processed. Unfortunately, she must have forgotten to check or just let both carelessly process after the system went back online. For the price for a faulty box, wait time, and service, I don't think I would come back to this branch again. I just hope they are competent enough to refund one of the double charges since my card company recommended me going through the store directly instead of filing for a direct dispute, which is more of a hassle. read more

I typically do not like to complain but in this case, I feel as if the Container Store's manager, Jesus, was extremely rude. I contacted the Container Store, I provided 2 SKUs and asked if the manager can check stock on the item. He indicated that they had 2 of the item in stock. I requested if he could physically check if it is on the floor because I had an in-store shopping appointment and would like to confirm that the product is in store before I drove 20 miles to the store. He replied, "the product could be in someone's cart or could be on the shelves. Or it could be quarantined because of it being a return." I asked, can you check the floor? He replied, "no." I asked to speak to a manager and he simply said, "I am the manager." I am not understanding why he could not look to see if it is in stock. What sense does that make when you know that someone has an in-store appointment? I should not have to drive for 30 minutes, pay a toll, looking for parking for 20 minutes, call the store to have them open the door, put on a mask, spray yourself with Lysol, go inside - just to see if they have a product in stock? It is rude. He successfully put a sour taste in my mouth about this store. The three stars come from me being physically present in the store. A few days prior to this incident I was in the store. The floor staff was extremely helpful. One assisted me with purchasing shelving. He provided me an excellent story about his work-life at the store. The second sales rep was excellent in helping me get the accessories for my bins and containers. She was super sweet and knew exactly the look I was going for. The individuals that are on the floor were extremely helpful, witty, and kind. However; their manager is a rotten apple. I hope his treatment of customers does not trickle down to the staff he manages. read more

Was a huge proponent of this store since i moved to the area 2 years ago, now after spending well over $10,000 decorating my new apartment, even thinking of all the container store stuff adorning my walls and closets leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth. Store doesn't stand by their own products, inconsistent customer service experience with latest being extremely poor. Previously had returned defective products but this store won't even accept their own defective product back even just for an exchange for a working product or store credit. Quality of products can be very hit or miss and with the poor customer service this store now offers, i would encourage all to CAVEAT EMPTOR. I don't know what I would've done without The Container Store when I moved to SF (coincidentally at the same time I had finished "Marie-Kondo-ing" everything, including my storage solutions). Moving to an apartment with bare-bones shelving, I needed to act fast. Thank goodness for The Container Store, who saved the day! Whatever storage solution you need, The Container Store has it. They have boxes, bins, crates, drawers... of all shapes and sizes. Some of my favorite finds are heavy-duty reusable gift boxes (that I use to store scarves and other seasonal accessories) and a desk-sized paint can (that I use to store essential oils next to my diffuser). It's pricey, yes - but when you're looking for a container of a specific size/shape, they're most likely to have it!
