I don't know how they do it and make any money with their more than affordable prices and exceptional quality. My experience dealing with Carlos was great, and I'll definitely be a repeat customer. I've been following their website for a few months now and they consistently have interesting, affordable mid-century pieces rotating through their inventory. I think they said there are updates on the site every 10 days, but the RSS feed seems to have something new every two or three days. Since there isn't a storefront (it's run from a storage unit in Portrero Hill) this is the best way to check out what they've got on hand. I ended up going to meet Carlos at the storage unit for a pair of lounge chairs and a dresser. Normally I'm extremely hesitant to purchase furniture sight unseen, but everything I saw in person was in such impeccable condition that I regret not putting down a deposit on the dresser - by the time I showed up the next day to check it out, it had already been snagged by some lucky jerk (Carlos had told me that someone had put down a deposit on it earlier, so I knew this was probably not going to work out). Instead I had to "settle" for just the chairs, which look fantastic in my place. He even wrapped everything up in plastic wrap for me since the person who had my Zipcar truck the hour before me had apparently used it to transport their collection of dirt. Just a totally satisfied experience overall.

It turned out this dealer was in SF, so I went in person to take a look. We met Carlos at a storage facility in Potrero Hill to view the dresser. It was in superb condition. We looked at some of his other items, and they were all so cool and in great shape. Clearly Carlos has an eye for design and attention to detail, because the refinishing was excellent on the pieces we saw. We purchased the dresser and arranged for delivery, which was prompt- the next day. The dresser arrived wrapped in moving blankets and was carefully set up in my room, and it looks awesome! I will definitely be doing business with MCMF again, I found everyone to be highly professional, friendly, and prompt. Additionally, I have my eye on some other things we saw.

We liked a lot of the items there, but I distinctly remember the woman at the front desk not acknowledging us at any point during our stay (not when we walked in, not once during our 15-minute visit, no small talk during checkout, and nothing when we left). Of course, if there were several customers and she was busy with other people, we wouldn't have minded. However, we were the only ones in the store. We were genuinely interested in many of the items, yet she didn't care to speak to us even once. It doesn't take much to greet or acknowledge your customers. Furthermore, the establishment is situated in one of the most tourist-heavy areas of SF. Not everyone who walks in will make a purchase; however, that should not provide a justification for ignoring those whom you may perceive as unlikely to buy anything. As a business owner, it's expected that you treat each person who enters the door with respect.

I had walked by a few times and spotted through the window some watercolor workbooks and I really wanted to buy them, but each time it was closed. On my forth time trying I finally saw the store open and I excitedly went in to look at the watercolor books. As soon as I walked in to inspect the books by the door, I felt bad vibes. I got the sense that everyone who worked there was staring at me like they expected me to run out with the books I was holding. A few moments later, I felt a presence behind me. It was one of the workers, a middle-aged woman that physically stood between me and the door and was hovering around without saying a word. I ignored them as I continued flipping through the books trying to narrow down my choices. The entire time this person stood right behind me, and only after several minutes did they ask if I needed help in a sarcastic tone, which felt to me as if they did not expect me to be seriously considering purchasing their items. I said no thank you. They continued to stand there and pretend to straighten the front area for over 5 minutes while I considered my choices. I finally picked out what I wanted and I got a good look at the rest of the store. I noticed a man with the glasses at the register eyeing me and a younger woman pretending to not be staring at me, in addition to the lady still standing by the door. Also in the store was a group of tourists speaking French, and another at the register, and yet none of the workers were even paying them any attention: their entire focus was on me. I have never felt so clearly unwelcome and eyed so suspiciously -- and I grew up as one of the few Latino people living in Carmel, a central coast town known for being filled with wealthy, elderly Caucasian residents. Initially, I bought my book to prove a point that I still had every right to be there, though I left feeling shaken, shocked, and angry. I just couldn't believe how I had been treated after being so excited to come to this store. A few days later after some reflection, I came back to the store to return my purchase because I decided I wasn't going to support a store that so obviously racially profiles people like me. I told the workers what happened and why I was returning my item (some were different employees, but a few I recognized from my initial visit). Instead of providing customer service, they proceeded to gaslight me about the experience I had, and with a straight face tried to tell me that they couldn't racially profile because they are also PoC (Asian). Then, to my surprise, out of the back room came Sue Fisher King herself. She was generous enough to talk with me, and I do really appreciate that gesture. That being said, she tried to brush the whole thing off as a misunderstanding. I respectfully disagree. Ms. King said that in her 40 years in the business she's never had a complaint like mine. I don't find this to be a compelling argument, as I almost didn't return to complain either. If you're a dark-skinned person like myself, racial microaggressions like these can be as exhausting as they are traumatizing. She and her workers told me all about how this is a high crime area and that it is protocol to stand by the door if there are a lot of customers in the store, and that they watch everyone. Including the French tourists (that they were not watching), and someone at the register, I was the fourth customer in the store, but the only one who seemed to warrant extreme monitoring. I understand the need to be vigilant against theft, as I've worked in retail. However, I do not agree with this tactic that a customer should be treated like a vandalism waiting to happen -- especially if this process becomes highly selective based on race or perceived looks. So there you have it. If you want to feel like a criminal just by walking through the door, come on to Sue Fisher King. And if you're the wrong color you will be watched like a hawk. I know I will not be returning.

Apparently those days are gone. I wanted to buy some nice soap and popped into the store recently to buy some. I arrived late in the afternoon near closing time. Two salespeople were on the floor, a man at the cash register behind the counter and a woman standing at a table leafing through a book and looking very bored. I said I'd come in to buy soap. The man behind the counter told me where it was displayed and gestured to the corner of the store where it was kept, I asked about minimally fragranced soap, he told me which ones to look at. The bored woman walked over to that corner of the store. And stood there. She made no effort to ask for specifics of what I was looking for or to tell me what was on display other than that some soaps were made from honey and others from milk. At one point she took the top off a box of loose soap and immediately put it back again. And then stood there looking bored. I walked out. The message was clear: we're not interested in having you as a customer. It's OK. I don't need to go there to buy expensive soap.

Two business days later I returned to return the three baskets and was told they don't accept returns on sale items and they only provide store credit for the none sale items. When two of the woman who helped me that day told the manager I had not be informed about their policy the woman running the show still would not make an exception for their error and on top of it was extremely rude and treated me as though I should have just know better. Well now I do know better and will never spend another dime in this store. Be careful with this place they don't value a customer, even one who is buying $300 in tiny baskets.
