I have shopped here many times, and will continue to do so because it is such a lovely shop with a great selection of gifts, and I love supporting a local business. I totally understand the return policy and the fact that they don't want you taking photos so you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Are the things more expensive than Amazon? Of course! But they have put in the effort of having a charming store where I can find all kinds of great gifts, so I am happy to pay up. I don't always know what I want to buy for someone until I see it, and I really appreciate the ability to browse in person. Our son always buys gifts here for his host families when he travels, and we take all of our SF visitors here too and they always find something great. Terrible service! We purchased a portable karaoke set for $76 and found the exact same one that day for $18 online found here: Retro Karaoke When we tried to return it less than 24 hours after purchase, we were told store credit only, no refunds! There is no signage in the store or on the receipt regarding this policy. We were told we would have to speak with the owner the next day. When we went back the following day, the woman who claimed to be the owner pointed to an outdated, handwritten "HOLIDAY POLICY 2024". I told her that shouldn't apply to this purchase and it's disgraceful to be charging 4X the price and not be willing to refund. I was told that's the price you pay for being able to "touch the items" vs online purchases and she refused to budge on the store credit. DO NOT SHOP HERE! incredibly rude customer service. I went into the store, thinking that I would buy a bunch of cards because they seem to be beautiful cards. They're also seem to be these beautiful little gifts that I could get for people, including a lovely set of Ultraman stickers. And then I saw both Alice waters that I thought that I might get and wanted to put on my wish list so I took out my phone to take a picture. the owner came over and said that I could not take a picture. I explained that I wanted to add it to my wishlist. The owner then went on to say that she didn't want people taking pictures and then buying it somewhere else. And I said that wasn't very good customer service and then not enough for any customer Ayres to hear she said, I don't think you were going to buy it here anyway. Now that we've established that, let's talk about neighborhood small businesses and the importance of supporting your local communities. Is it less expensive to shop online? Possibly, probably, sure ok yes. But if you take a moment to really think about who is affected by your online purchase, you're not only adding additional funding for a seriously creepy billion-billionaire to shoot a very phallic looking rocket into space like it's a Braniff Boeing international flight...it was disturbing just typing that, fyi... ...you're also taking possible, and sometimes essential revenue away from your neighborhood vendors and shop owners. True story! I'm not rich and I'm not close to "flush with cash" either. I'm a teacher and usually buy things when they are for treats and special occasions. I hardly ever buy a frivolous spendy hip and trendy trinket from a cool gift store. It's rare. (I'm also desperately cheap...just by nature.) But I will always buy my birthday cards from Teresa and Marcy if I can. And if they have the best gift that matches my white elephant/secret Santa needs, Wink will be the first place I visit. Even when I walk out the doors of their store with nothing, I feel like I had a lovely time meandering through my neighborhood store. I'm always welcome, I'm always treated as a friend. I truly believe our communities thrive when we make that extra effort to at least consider spending slightly more for a local purchase instead of picking up your iPhone for the convenient choice. The mask police work here. It's unfortunate because they are the only store in Noe Valley policing patrons upon entry. It creates an unwelcoming and rigid shopping environment. I did see the previous comment/reply addressing the other similar concern. It's clear that the store is misinformed about CDC guidance and regulations. Apparently germs live here but not in the grocery store, coffee shops or any of the other businesses on 24th street. There are plenty of stores near by that offer the same products paired with a better environment. Hope to see this turn around. read more

I found this shop to be conveniently located, well laid out and full of interesting - sometimes surprising - home decor and gift items such as cool kitchen accoutrements, stylish purses and backpacks, beautiful earrings, gorgeous cards and charming books about San Francisco. The owners are super friendly - and responsible. They keep a stack of masks and politely ask you to wear one. That's hard to do in this tense political environment but I actually appreciate it. Lots of uber cute Japanese enthused gifts for the home and person, I'm walking around looking & thinking all this stuff has got to be imported from Japan, all useful items although grossly expensive. If you've ever shopped at a Japanese housewares market, you'd know what I mean. I found these rubbery, soft nylon feeling place mats with cute comic stencil designs at $22 each or for a set ? Who knows. A few types of bobble heads from Mario Batali flipping a crepe to a cute panda. Tokidoki products and t-shirts are also offered, the popular "Bastardino" is available. She didn't chat so much that it distracted me from shopping and when I had a question about an artist she put my info down in book and said she would call me when she found the answer I was looking for. How dare you! While strolling 24th street this evening, enjoying the Noe Valley Wine Walk and preparing for a little holiday shopping, I stepped into Wink to look for gifts for my family. A sign behind the front counter advertised a 5% discount when paying in cash and with only a credit card on my person, I knew I would have to return after a trip to the ATM in order to take advantage of the additional savings. After selecting a small knitted Dia De Los Muertos coin purse for my sister and spotting a set of handmade earrings, hand stamped with a pug/bulldog in a birthday hat for my mom, I let one of the clerks who was assisting customers know that I would be returning for these items after a trip to Wells Fargo, a block down the street. As the clerk noted, every little bit helps! As I made my way out of the store, the shop co-owner, made eye contact with me and, what I thought was recognizing me as a returning customer, as I had purchased some area rugs and other items at the shop since it opened many years back, instead surprised me with "You're the guy who stole the wallet from me". Stunned, I replied, "no, but I have purchased some rugs from the shop." She made her accusations in front of not only her sales staff, but also a store filled with customers, as the shop was a participant in the Wine Walk and was offering glasses of wine to several customers. This was the same shop owner who handed me a holiday goodie bag a couple of December's back during an open (shop) house, the same woman I had a conversation about the art toys she stocked. I demanded an apology, as I was highly insulted, however, she continued to make the claim, letting me know that she had chased me down the street until I finally returned the wallet to her, I would have liked to know when this alleged crime spree happened, as I was no doubt behind my desk in an office building downtown. If this had been true, wouldn't I have a fabulous new mug shot to remember the holidays with? Why didn't she photograph the thief then, call the police when the theft extravaganza occured, what do the security cameras say? She refused to back down from her claim and I grew more agitated as she kept repeating herself, letting everyone in the shop know I was the suspected thief, clearly unaware that she was slandering me. Truly mystified and still shocked, I again asked that she apologize and that she was fingering the wrong guy. She pulled out her phone to call the authorities and not having anything to hide, decided to wait, so I could disprove her claim, however, the sales staff politely encouraged me to leave and not wanting to make a bigger scene on such a festive evening, I decided to do so, but before leaving, I warned the remaining customers not to touch anything for fear of being fingered for theft. I walked down the street slowly, hoping for the police cruiser to arrive so that we could return to the store together, but alas, none ever arrived. Instead, I stopped for a cupcake at the Noe Valley Bakery to calm me down, the "Moist-est" chocolate cupcakes have that affect on me. Once I arrived home and thinking about the crazy event that just occurued, I called the police, as I didn't want the shop owner to continue this sick slanderous practice of accusing people with no cause, however, once they arrived at my home, one of the officers discouraged me from going back to the store with them to speak to the owner, as the shop owner could claim I was trespassing. Perhaps they saw it as a petty incident and in the grand scheme of things that the SF police have to deal with, like naked people and fans torching buses when San Francisco wins the World Series, it was. The shop owner will eventually realize the mistake she made, she needs to appreciate her customers and not to accuse them of unfounded theft. It is unfortunate that shrinkage is part of the retail landscape and I understand that Noe Valley merchants have a fair amount of theft, as reported over the years in the local Noe Valley Voice newspaper, however, the owner took this too far in her quest to justify her inventory losses. As a 11 year homeowner in Noe Valley, residing just just blocks from this shop, I will never patronize this shop again, pity, I really wanted those earrings for my mom, I can find the coin purse elsewhere, I'm certain the shops on Valencia Street will carry similar items. I will sleep well tonight, the disgruntled shop owner however, I doubt will. The upside, if any? This will all make for great laughs at the office tomorrow. read more

Came in here to beg (so uncouth, i know) for rocket dog rescue silent auction items and the awesome woman who was working got up immediately, grabbed a gorgeous dog dish and handed it over. how's that for generosity, service and kindness? truly fantastic. in a world where you are looked at like a moocher or a free loader whenever you ask for donations (even if you are the charm monster that i am), it was such a welcome surprise. i hadn't been a previous customer but right then and there, i picked up a couple of super cool items i never knew i always needed. awww. upon further inspection, the store is chock full of the coolest stuff i've ever seen...not the usual trinket store crap you find at similar stores...really cool, unusual chochtkies that people would be honestly delighted to receive as a gift. Super adorable gift store (the best in Noe Valley) that's good for all ages and genders (and not too expensive). Imagine a combination of Wishbone and Giant Robot with a dash of Flight 001 or Zinc Details. Though the greeting card selection is small, it's very good (they carry Fiddlesticks, Two Piglets, Snow & Graham) with plenty of pretty letterpress cards. They carry coffee table books, kitchen items, Alessi bottle openers, journals, travel items, laptop and messenger bags, handmade jewelry (geometric designs in wood and metal), Fresh lotions, soaps and perfumes (I've been a fan of Fresh for a long time), hoodies, adorable tees (including Yoshitomo Nara, Angry Little Girls and Tokidoki), tea pots, drinking glasses, candles, cutesy toasters, toys, stainless steel water bottles (I liked the crow design: http://www.earthlust.com/products), bowls, and vases. For a store full of scenestery, designey shit you don't need, it is outrageously fun. And the requisite cute-but-wholly-superfluous Gama Go stuff is offset by the usefulness of great cards, quality laptop cases and bags, travel supplies, and kitchen supplies you would actually use. HORRIBLE and inflexible RETURN POLICY. Beware! For the birth of my son, my friend bought me a diaper bag from Wink. She presented it in a Wink bag, and Wink was the only retailer in SF selling this item. I'd JUST had my baby, and if anyone knows, it's difficult to get out for the first couple of weeks. My son was a month old when I was finally able to schlep to the store to exchange the diaper bag since I already had one. The staff and owner refused to exchange the item despite that there were clearly others on the shelf. Where else would I have gotten the item? I didn't want to insult my friend by asking for a gift receipt. I'm SHOCKED that Wink was so inflexible about exchanging the item for something I could use. The owner was rude, and offered me no good explanation for why she couldn't accommodate a new mother. Urban Nest is a MUCH more family-friendly store with a generous exchange policy. I believe in supporting the neighborhood businesses that support their neighbors. read more

I love the range of gifts, bags and jewelry this cute store has. I've bought many things here over the years and am loyal to shopping locally. But after spending $500 on four items (2 purses and 2 wallets) and having the zippers fail on three out of four, I took my purchases back so the owner could relay feedback to her supplier. I also wanted to see if the zippers could be replaced, since all items show little wear and should be good for years to come. Crazy to throw someone away that should be able to be repaired. Owner reported that "yes, she has told her supplier that the zips have failed in the past, and that no, nothing could be done about it." Disappointing, but out of her control, I understand. When I asked if she could give me a small break on the next wallet (different brand) I was about to buy she said "No". Even 10% off to show some goodwill here would have made a difference. I left feeling that this store does not stand by their products, nor feel any loyalty to their customers. read more

If Useful, Funny, Cool were a store, Wink would be it. I went there for the first time today and really liked the mix of cute and practical - some recognizable brands with enough original stuff to make it a destination for me. There is the almost expected Japanese toy/t-shirt section (but no Paul Frank, thank god), but what really stood out was the housewares. Whimsical, practical, guaranteed to make the person on the receiving end coo and grin. A gift from Wink will give you automatic smart points just by association. I bought 2 perfect gifts, and a really well-designed cutting board for myself. I like that it's not all modern, too- they have a section of vintage fabric patchwork aprons that are beyond adorable. I wanted to buy one and wear it down the street! At $39.99, they are fairly priced, and so much more fun than your average chef's apron. I'm dreaming about an apron! Who would have thought? But that is what Wink does well - shows you something you didn't know that you needed, but that is clearly what is missing in your life. That's just great retail. A rare find! read more

This place has a lot of cool stuff. Ummm, I mean, if I were a girl. I was only here because my friend's wife wanted to come here. But once in, I entertained myself for quite a few minutes reading the Angry Little Girls cartoon books. And those cool rulers that when you tilt it the horses are running, or the penguins are waddling. Yeah I'm easily amused, but I grew up in a big family and didn't have lots of toys as a kid. Anyway the coolest thing in the store was the set of Hello Kitty PEZ dispensers. Comes with 4 dispensers in a nice little tin with a window. It was the last one so she bought it for me, well okay for my niece. But it is so cool that I want to keep one for myself. What's better in life than being fed PEZ candy by Kittychan? They have Tokidoki and tons of other knicknacks. But all I really remember is the Hello Kitty PEZ set, oh and the Angry Little Asian Girl totebag... man, girls get all the fun stuff. read more

A delighfully quirky shop in Noe Valley perfect for obtaining a novelty San Francisco themed gift! Brightly lit, clean, and well organized, this store has everything from keychains to posters, jewelry, kitchen accessories, and more, all cute and SF themed without being cheesy and touristy. I would give this awesome store 5 stars if it wasn't for the prices here! The products sold here are on the more expensive side, which is understandable since you won't find these items anywhere else, but some small items are not worth the price for me. When in doubt, shop at Wink! Cute and random little nothings spread through out makes this a great destination to shop for that little something extra for a friend or yourself. The holy toast imprint in the window made me laugh when I breezed by the front door one day so I dropped in for a peek. A great find on 24th that combines a whole lot of everything together. From sharp and witty unique cards, scary Domo dolls (I will someday buy one of you but your big mouth scares me and I don't trust you in the dark...)to these crazy mini japanese dolls that have little boy parts. There's a bag in the back that says it all "I hate people" (Not really, but when in coffee deprivation it speaks the truth) and as soon as payday comes, I'm coming back to pick it up to use for groceries. There really is quite a bit to look through, the shop is not crowded by any means there's just so much that you'll want to go home with. While I was in here one afternoon, the sales girl was helping a mom and her kids and they were having such a blast that I actually stopped my poking around to watch them. When they finally got this weird looking robot to work, everyone started giggling and laughing, even the sales girl. I thought that was one of the nicest examples of good customer service in action. I then proceeded to sniff all the Fresh products in the back of the store and contemplated paying the $38 for the pot of chocolate orange shea butter. (One dirty look from my boyfriend put an end to any dreams of having it in my possession, though.) They'll help you spend it on stuff that, even though you never knew they existed, it just so happens you NEED. An orange leather wallet? Oh yes, I need one of those. A polka dot purse? check. Little orange measuring bowls with matching rubber spatula and silicone basting brush. My kitchen had been empty without them. Magnetic sushi pieces? I'm sure my friend needs those! A soap dispenser that looks like snot is coming out of a cartoon character's nose? okay, well no, I don't need one of those, but it sure was fun to look at and put gently back on the shelf. I bought a Manhattan Portage bag here that I use everyday and it's great! The clerks have all been helpful and it's always fun just to browse around to burn some time.
