I love places like this. It reminds me of old world SF with unique styles and cutesy art items. The fact that not many ppl that live here now never really see the old SF where boutique shops are cute and unique. The value is fair. Not too high and too low. Prices range from higher up items that you expected to be to something you wouldn't even think it will be. Other than that. Not bad and I have to say that it is totally worth it to check few stuff out here. Now services is always very happy and friendly. I adore them here and love the store pup. I don't know why I even check out other stores for gifts. I always end up at Picnic! They have a great selection of gifts especially for someone you think that you don't know what to get them...until you go here! I usually go here when I have someone difficult to shop for. Oh and they also help me gift wrap (see pic)! The staff is super friendly and helpful. On today's visit, I was struggling to think of a last minute birthday gift for my friend. She happens to be a fan of whiskey but I didn't want to just buy any bottle of whiskey for her as I'm unsure what kind she'd like or what kind would be gift-worthy. I found a nice guide to whiskey book and two fun whiskey tumblers. She happens to be starting a new business so the "manifest that shit" whiskey tumbler makes the gift even more thoughtful. They have an online store but I'm unsure if all their merchandise is online. I always find better gift ideas when I'm at the physical store. This place is a joke. Let me be honest their stuff is beautiful but the owner... WOW! I was quoted a price of $158 for two prints and two frames and told her I was driving from San Jose and she confirmed the price over the phone. Soon as I arrived an hour and half later- no apology no nothing she says oh the price changed to $228 "cause she quoted the price wrong over the phone". She didn't even offer to give a slight discount on the product nor apologize or say "ok we'll give you even a $10 discount" - no, she proceeded to act obnoxious so in the end I just bought the prints not the frame as I found the same one in pottery barn for $30. As stated, their stuff is great - just a shame about who owns the business, and for that reason I wouldn't return or recommend them. Total bait and switch here. This store has a lot of cute and unique items, but LACKS on the customer service. Who wants to shop in a store and feel like you are being closely monitored, as if you're going to steal?! The shop girl didn't say a single word, hello, or smile to me. As soon as a new customer walked into the store, she greeted them in a friendly way. I noticed from reading other reviews, that maybe she only greets every other customer that comes in??? I really like Picnic because: 1) They're walking distance from my place. 2) Things are good quality. 3) Their price point is higher, but not so ridiculous that you would ONLY look at the sale rack (and by they way they still have a great sale rack). 4) One room for clothes/jewelry, another room for cute knick-knacks and gifts (think Urban Outfitters gift section but in better taste, not necessarily witty/funny stuff, more classy & good taste). It's one of those places where I've only bought a few items, spent a little more, but it they've all been totally worth it because I've put them all to good use and they're still in great shape. Cute boutique with baby items, home items, jewelry, gifts and clothing. I love their SF items! I came in here a couple years ago with my good 'ol Yelp buddy Janice, and gawked over the cute onesies. Since hubs and I were eating nearby at House of Prime Rib the other week we came after our early dinner to get a onesie for our son. Upon entering, I was remembered of the cold vibe from the employees. They never greeted me on either occasion and most of the time are either talking to themselves or eating something. I honestly feel that a lot of the items are overpriced in which you can find similar items at other shops for less. Their sale items are only discounted at about 10% and looked semi damage as well - like the books and some of the candles. The adorable bear onesie that I loved a couple years ago that read "Made in California" was only available in a 18 month size. So, we looked at some of the SF themed onesies and tops and got him a cute baseball raglan tee that outlined the different neighborhoods of SF. Overpried, yes, but we're natives so we have an appreciation for this kind of stuff and wanted him to have some SF stuff. 3 stars solely for the cute selection. Service, prices, and quality of products could improve. read more

I purchased three small, clay, candlestick holders (each $24), that I really liked. They were carefully wrapped in the store and carefully unwrapped when I got home. However, each cracked as I placed candles (that I had also just purchased at Picnic), into the candlestick holders.  I was shocked and disappointed.    Picnic was contacted the same day and I followed-up with an email and picture showing the broken candlestick holders. I requested a refund to my credit card for the price of the candlestick holders. I will keep the candles. I was told that I must spend two hours driving into the City, search for parking, and feed the meter to return broken candlestick holders. Why? Picnic "will need to take a look at the candlestick holders to determine how they broke and possibly send back to our manufacturer." Hmm, I've learned two things in our correspondence, 1) they don't believe me when I told them how this happened and 2) what I thought were handmade items were manufactured. read more

I love Picnic and have been wandering in (and out) of here for years. Their products are so thoughtfully curated and the owner has fantastic style. It's a great place to buy a gift or just dream a little dream. But it is a customer service story that prompted me to review Picnic after all this time of me being a fan. I bought a pair of stone stud earrings in January and one of the stones fell out at some point, after wearing them about 10 times or so. I figured, what the heck, I'll go in and see if they could help, knowing there was a strict policy on jewelry. The clerk kindly took the earrings and said she'd contact the designer to see if they could replace the stone. Sure, I was fine with that. I got an email within a week explaining the designer no longer made the design, but that they'd honor an even exchange. I thought that was a really lovely solution, and just because the process was handled so professionally, I doubled down and bought a pair of earrings twice as much as my credit. And the stone hasn't fallen out (phew). Karma is a lovely thing. read more

This place is sweet. I can say I have bought a lot of jewelry here and probably one dress. I find some of their pricing to be a little high. I have seen the same dress in other boutiques in the city for sometimes $40 dollars less. The staff is friendly, but not badgering you to purchase. Although I don't like how they stalk you around the store like you are going to steal something. I hope by now they know me and see me as a regular. But really? My girlfriend had called some store ahead of time on the phone to check some items for availability and thought it was this store (turns out it was the store across the street that she talked to). When we entered the store, my girlfriend said "thank you so much for answering my questions on the phone" with a smiling face. Obviously, they didn't know what she was talking about. Instead of saying it wasn't them who she talked to, the two ladies who work at the store preferred to stay silent and make faces behind my girlfriend (like "what is this idiot talking about?"), thinking she wouldn't see. This place is super cute! It's your staple SF expensive stuff of just random stuff. They have stuff for your living room, kitchen, your closet, your mom, your mom's best friend, etc. I got marble coasters, which came in a set of 5 I think. Were they expensive? Yes. Was I not sure about buying them because it was like $7 per coaster? Yes. Is it super cute on my coffee table, while preventing cups from leaving rings? Yes. C U T E We stopped by after my friend's laptop ran out of energy juice at The Crepe House (due to no outlets along the wall accessible by patrons) and only because a cute flirty top was waving at us from across the street (decided to head towards Peet's). Small hall in the wall with a good range of trendy items that were not only mixed in with affordables but brands like Free People, To The Maxx, Soda Blu in addition to accoutrements like the very cute Loungefly cigarette holder that I'm going to utilize as a business card holder instead ($12). In addition, there were several racks of clearance items marked down to almost half off. A fell in love with a somewhat surreal t-shirt but could not justify the $85 price tag. However, the Tulle brand clothing was quite chic and the grey top reminded me to come back within a few weeks. Maybe if it were half off..... Alas, the only problem was that many of their sizes do not adapt well to my size 6 curves (butt/chest factor) which would explain why I walked out with one small little brown bag tucked under my arm. My friend, however, fared better with two adorable summer dresses for $85! The owner was affable and nice, allowing us to peruse without the typical boutique banality of following people around like dogs. After reading some really great Yelp reviews, I finally made my way to Picnic yesterday. I was expecting more of a selection of dresses but other than that, I was not disappointed. They have adorable little t-shirts and a good selection of cute tanks and tops. Their little knick-knacks and jewelry were awesome too. I ended up buying an awesome purple dress for my wine tasting trip this weekend (for a LOT less than I was expecting) and a really cool vest. At the register, I was also suckered into buying a precious little bracelet with a shell on it to give to my friend for her birthday. The woman working there was helpful but not in your face or bothersome. I will definitely be returning. New to the neighborhood, I popped into Picnic to see what they had. Upon entering, I received no greeting or efforts to help me by the employee on the "knick knacks" side of the store. I looked past this, but when I saw this employee extending herself to other customers I raised an eyebrow. I found a greeting card that was just what I was looking for. I carried it around the store, holding it in plain sight sight - I felt as though I was being watched - as I was looking around the women's clothing side of the store. Once again, I was rudely ignored. You know who was not ignored? The customers DIRECTLY behind me. I placed the card down on the table and walked out. This place is one of my favorite boutiques in San Francisco. Every time I go here I find something (which is not always a good thing) and I always want more than what I can afford to spend. They have everything from comfy t's to amazing silk dresses. Prices range from $20 to $300something. The prices are all over the board which is okay because so is there selection. Their sale rack is always packed (which I always check first) and they have interesting little knick knacks, clutches, shoes and bags all over the store. They also have a wonderful jewelry selection. This is the perfect one stop Christmas shop for all the women in your life! They also have men's t's and I am pretty sure they give discounts to Academy of Art students. However it does not get the full 5 stars from me because of the vibe I feel when I am actually browsing the store. My favorite part of my new neighborhood are all the amazing shops and boutiques on Polk and Hyde, and Picnic is by far my favorite. I tried to resist going in for so long (poor grad student shouldn't be shopping so much) but every time I walked past I wanted the outfits I saw in the window. I would say the style is comparable to anthropolgie with a slight neon funky twist. The staff is great, my first trip I found a great little sweater/cardigan dress, the button fell of when I was trying it on and the woman working there sewed it on in 5 minutes for me and I was out the door! The prices are average, and of course, I have lots of love for the clearance rack. The jewelry is unique, adorable, and affordable!
