This place is just odd. There are lots of gift and clothing shops, and it's important to differentiate between a place like Nest, and your average Therapy store. No kitsch here, like books about cat poetry. A really unique blend of antiques and designer items like handbags. The older items are in locked glass cabinets, requiring assistance. There's a small dressing area, and the display spaces are quite lovely. I've only been twice within two weeks, so I don't know how rapidly the merchandise turns over, but I would think quite often. read more

I low key love it here. My husband would call this store a "store of things you don't need." But isn't that the POINT??? There's just delightful thing after delightful thing. Sometimes I get so confused because I love so many things here. I'm perplexed by the repeated mention of a rude older lady who works here. She must not have been there when I was there! there are some $100 quilted tote bags with jungle motifs in this store that I found on Amazon for under $30. the bags are identical, and I know this because I own the same bag they're selling for $100, and the quality, the cut, and the fabric is exactly the same. This normally wouldn't bother me but the owners are weirdly rude and angry considering that they're selling Amazon products for over three times retail value. If they're not going to sell quality products, then they should at least have good service. read more

This place is fab. A bit out of my jurisdiction, in an upscale neighborhood where I am barely bold enough to window-shop, but the door was open on a summer afternoon and I was drawn in. This place is *the* place to get a gift for that aunt you have that travels a ton and already has basically everything. And as I am also a well-traveled auntie I gravitated towards many things. You will be able to find something unique here. And maybe I've been in the city for too long, but I daresay it wasn't as pricey as I might have expected. The selection is well-curated and the room is eclectically decorated from floor to ceiling. Although I was not greeted when I arrived, the shopkeeper quickly noticed when I placed my items on the checkout tray and politely wrapped up and rang up my gifts, complete with a retro receipt. It would be more European to greet every customer, but it was a busy Saturday and the lack of attention didn't ruffle my feathers (as it apparently has other reviews). The grumpy lady who rang me up did not even acknowledge me, when I was ready to check out she grumbled something about me being "finally ready?" Ummmm. Ok??? The merchandise, eccentric in it's curation, retro cool and, not onerously overpriced is a joy to discover. HOWEVER, the staff, especially the taller, more middle aged woman treats costumers as an inconvenience and something to be mocked or berated. For example when I tried to pay for my $10 treasure with a card, she said in a loud, scornful, and incredulous tone for all of the customers to hear "REALLY? You're going to pay for a $10 item with a card? *whatever*" maybe she prefers cash because it's easier to embezzle that way - bc almost no transaction, outside of cash only bars is in cash she is such an angry and bitter person - she needs a job where she has no contact with the general public - she'd be happier as would the general public read more

I loved the items in here but was surprised that none of the three ladies who were working seemed to be interested in anything but chattering amongst themselves. Two were giddy, unwrapping and hanging Christmas ornaments at the very front of the shop, effectively making access to the rest of the place uncomfortable. There were several items that I took photos of and sent to my spouse, but the woman near the jewelry cases was more interested in eating her sandwich than even saying hello. The store was packed but I didn't see anyone buying anything--maybe the other customers were as disappointed in the lack of customer service as I was. Beautiful shop, bad service. read more

Fantastic boutique. Gorgeous , unusual finds . I bought gifts for at least a 1/2 doz peeps & they really fussed at the goods . Not going to lie , the service can definitely be off putting . I heard them flat out say "NO ",on looking / trying on jewelry , to an inquiring customer , no explanation, just No .??? Kind of caught me off guard . Then I also have seen them w customers that they call the driver to pick up & seemed to know them well & give them exceptional service . We felt good about our salespersons attitude. I have been here a few times . Saw the windows today , before they were opened , going back . Ha ha For the " hard to buy for "person , they have the goods to please . Check it out ! This shop for years has been a "go to". Shopping Fillmore and ending here has always been a treat until today. The gentleman that opened the store was unpleasant and not helpful. I felt that I was a bother. There was a cute polka dot dress in the window that I was ready to buy-but with NO assistance I found the dress on line for $30 less and can take my business elsewhere. This is a great shop with a lot of beautiful items. I usually love shopping here. On my recent visit there was an older male employee who rudely answered a couple questions and was not very helpful. He mostly just followed the shoppers as if everyone was shoplifting. It made for a very uncomfortable shopping experience. read more

One of my favorite stores in San Francisco. Heck, one of my favorite stores period! This boutiques is a little piece of France in Pacific Heights. There are wonderful books, garments, perfumes, bedding, gifts, tabletop decorative items. The list goes on and on. If I were given a wish? I would want to have everything in the store to be part of my house. I would even want the store staff to arrange the table displays in my house. Everything looks stunning and I delight in all the color. I would not be surprised if Aladdin's Cave looked like Nest because everything inside is a treasure. read more

And one more beautiful star for the ambiance, the other reason I keep coming in when I'm up on Fillmore. Ridiculously chic and cozy. (Insert screech sound) : The buck stops here. I have never, ever received as much as a "hello" upon walking in. Perhaps I am not dressed the right way? I am usually pretty casual when I am in there, as I petsit a friend's dog right up the street. Just two weekends ago, I sauntered in on a Saturday and must've oogled at the jewelry case for 5 minutes or more. Neither of the two women behind the counter (seated) could be bothered to say hello or ask me if I wanted to see something. I did --- a gold/aquamarine ring that is still dancing in my head --- but I felt uncomfortable interrupting their chit-chat. Low and behold, a very well-dressed man walked in and picked up a vase. Both ladies stood up and one chose to go over and help him. They made a $38 dollar sale with him but lost a much pricier one with me, sadly. I will keep coming in and oogling b/c it's worth the eye-candy rush, but I'll just assume to be ignored as many of us are, obviously! read more

I read the reviews and can understand folks comments about the service here. I didn't think the staff were snobby - maybe just a tad bit out of touch with reality? Anyway, I have only been here once. I do have to give the owner credit for the originality of the store. Sure Anthropologie may have similar items, but they are a chain. And, I don't know, something about chains all looking the same everywhere you go does not deserve the same credit as someone who decided to open up a boutique on her own. It is a bit pricey here, but hey, everything is pricey for me at the moment - especially since I work in nonprofit. I liked coming here to get inspired. And maybe I will find that candle holder at half the price somewhere down the line... read more

This place is filled with beautiful gifts and fun things to look at. However, I felt like the owner and or the shopkeeper was watching me like a hawk. I felt like a criminal in there when I was just shopping for a baby gift! The vibe is completely overtaken by the snooty attitude and I will not spend my money at a place that gives me a "less than" attitude. I was in trying on jewelry... the salesgirl unapologetically blurts out.. "Do you have the gold ring?" I just stand there looking at her. No - I gave it back to you. I turn around and everyone in the store is looking. She then finds it in the case where she put it... and turns around... No apology. Nothing. Absolutely horrible customer relations and service. To the reviewers who said their experience in the store was marred by the owner watching them, I understand why: the shop is packed with all sorts of goodies and it would be easy for someone to pick pocket. I myself was carrying a large bag from George (see other review), and I followed the golden rule of all shopping places: unless you're truly interested in an item, do not touch it. There are many fragile and delicate pieces in this shop which should only be handled carefully and with care. I am comforted to see many other reviews like the one I am about to leave. The owner is incredibly, unbelievably rude. I will never, ever spend money at this store. I am local and could easily have made this a go to shop. This woman is losing money by being so awful to people. I was looking at a beautiful pair of earrings at the shop yesterday. One of the women was very nice and was showing me these earrings. 780 dollars. I asked who the maker was, as any person about to consider making this large purchase would have the right to know. The woman helping me was struggling to remember the artists name. Before I know it, a women - who I presume to be the owner - came over and was beyond rude. "I don't give out my sources". Oh, but perhaps I'd like to look her up. "You can't. You can't get them anywhere else." Oh, so you can only get them here at this tiny little shop in sf even though your worker just told me the artist is from Ireland? "Yes, that's right. I don't give out my sources." First of all, like I said, if I am about to drop nearly $800 on some button earrings (that's right, made of buttons), I sure as hell deserve to know where they come from and who made them. Second of all, I'm not sure what I did to deserve this kind of treatment since I was having a perfectly pleasant exchange with the shop girl until this woman came along. And third (and most importantly), does the creator of these earrings know that you're stifling her and refusing to spread the word about her work? I would personally pull my work from a shop that refused to tell customers my name and where they could see more of my work. I'm sure this artist would've been happy to know someone loved her pieces. Or maybe the owner won't give out the name because she actually made them herself and is needlessly charging so much. My guess is that you're just overcharging and don't want people to realize. I am so bothered by this. I was a sales woman for a long time in college, and this is never how you should treat customers - especially as the owner! Are you trying to chase sales away? Did you judge me by my appearance or something? Did you decide there's no way that I was local AND able to afford those earrings? Hi, I agree with the other reviewers this store is a treasure.... BUT Like others have said the staff are arrogant snots who think they are better than anyone. I was recently insulted by the heavy set brunette who appears to be in charge of the store... She took it upon herself to offer an unsolicited comment indicating she was tired of me coming in the store. I guess I showed up once too often lacking my $2,500 cashmere top coat to please herself (I have two of them so there is no excuse on my part)... Regardless of the treasures, these people do not deserve your business because they are rude to their customers. I formerly bought items for my ex there often, since we parted I did not buy so often. I urge you to go to a store which appreciates your business and treats you with respect, there are many great stores on Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights who appreciate your business... BAN NEST! I don't care what type of interesting, unique home pieces/jewelry you carry.... if you cannot acknowledge a customer by a simple "hello", then you don't deserve any business. The last time I was in Nest (4-20-13), and my wife and browsing the jewelry case, this younger asian woman was more interested in eating her apple than asking if we needed to see anything in the case. She was standing right in back of the case facing us, and didn't bother to ask if we needed help. That's poor customer service and extremely rude. When her coworker came out from the back, they just started to chit chat, like we weren't even in the store. There's a lot to see in this store, so we were probably in there for about 20 mins and not once, did we get a "hello" or a "how can i help you?" NOTE TO THE OWNER: The next time I'm in the area, I'm going to have my dog take a poo on your floor and I'm not kidding... you should get a taste of how your employees treat people. read more

My mother paid her first visit to San Francisco in May. Before that, I think she had the typical east coast conception of the area: * everyone is beautiful because it's California * the weather is always sunny and warm because it's California * everyone is a quirky weirdass hippie because it's the Bay Area * Full House could potentially be realistic (random tangent: an East Coast friend recently asked me if I was dating any 'Berkeley beach bums'. I was like 'hahahaha good one' and then I realized he actually thought the term 'Berkeley beach bum' was a logical thing to say) The weather thing is kind of true. It certainly didn't get cold in December, so I forgot about Christmas until I got a phone call: My mom: Hi! Christmas is coming! What do you want? Me: Money. What do you and my sister want? My mom: Oh, I don't know. I'm sure you'll find interesting things in San Francisco! Me: Uhhh...like souvenirs? My mom: No. Like, San Francisco stuff. Unique, interesting things you can only find in San Francisco that we might like. You know what we like. Me: Okay... The thing is, San Francisco is no longer a several-month wagon train journey away from the east coast, so most things available here are also available there, or easily shipped. I wasn't sure exactly what my mother was expecting, so I did what I do when I don't feel like tackling a problem: nothing. Suddenly, it was December 23rd and I had no gifts. I didn't really know my way around the city yet, so I decided to go to the Haight and wander until I found something. Hours passed, it got dark, and all I had to show for my shopping efforts was a banana I had bought for myself and subsequently eaten. I was about to give up and go to Crate and Barrel or Macy's or something when I found myself in a shopping district whose name I didn't even know. And there, on the corner, was Nest. It was exactly what I believed my mother believed San Francisco was all about. Funky-artsy-classy. The kind of thing Anthropologie tries to mass-market, but nest does it better and more authentically than Anthropologie. The gift wrapping was beautiful -- all of the boxes were topped with a little nest with a sparkly egg. Christmas was saved! Nest is me and I am Nest. We have a longstanding love affair that is as passionate as a screen kiss, and as strong as the Eiffel Tower. We stroll along the Seine together, holding hands and eating a delicious confection, wrapped in colorful cashmere scarves while we hold our heads close and whisper things that only the two of us know. When Nest and I are together, magic happens. The rest of the world disappears. The moment I step inside Nest, I am transported into the world of all things tactile. The colors, the textures - so rich, so lovely - everything is washed, filigreed, glazed, etched, tea-stained, and hand-dipped. It truly is like a French Flea Market - found objects from around the globe, brought together in a way that is rustically elegant, beautifully appointed, and very very French. From the gorgeous quilts to the hand-blocked tablecloths (similar to those found at Williams Sonoma, but much less Provencal and more eclectic) to the Alize-style pottery to the decoupage trays, Nest has a wonderful assortment of treasures. I have bought some of my favorite books there, like the one I bought today "Sunday Suppers at Lucques", as well as many gifts, unique stationary, and countless objects of desire. My adjectives overflow when it comes to Nest. I can't help it. It is like the way you smile when you see your true love - it comes from inside. Nest affects me that way, as I find myself wandering up and down the narrow aisles of the store, touching this and that, taking it all in. I spend money that I don't have there because I just have to have a little part of this store to keep with me when I go home. When I buy a gift there (their gift wrap is great), I have to struggle to give it up. It's hard to share. But you can't keep Nest in a cage - it won't be kept. This is a great neighborhood store with a nicely curated, eclectic mix of high and low of home goods, jewelry, toys, clothing, and vintage/antique items. BUT, the customer service I recently received was so atrocious that I WILL NEVER GO BACK. An older Asian woman was the sole person working that day and no "hi" or "hello" to me or the 3 other people in the store. At one point, I was in front of her at the jewelry case for 10 min and not once did she acknowledge me. Then the cherry topper, I don't know if she was watching me or another shopper that was by me, but I felt her creepily watching us then suddenly jolt forward towards us as if we were shoplifting then stop when she realized she made a mistake. If you want to feel unwelcome or an intruder, this is the place to shop. Customer service is very important to me and sadly, at the state this store is in, it may not survive for long. read more

I came here looking for this amazing and fun paper crown that said The Queen for a friend of mine having a birthday. Found the crown - found the price tag - FORTY DOLLARS?. My friend got a feather and glass jewel-bedecked confection from Claire's. Sticker-shock aside, I like to come in and poke around for funky, unique things that will help me maintain Christmas Stocking Stuffer Extraordinaire status in my family. This is what back and forth ran through my head when I started to wander around in here. It's completely implausible but I just could see someone walking in and requesting this. Like Misses Zuckerberg maybe. This place is everything Anthropologie wants to be. Sourcing materials and buyers from local to around the globe, it's a pretty whimsical store. Prices aren't for the parsimonious. The staff is kind and excited about their wares. When the shop owner opens up with "are you two having fun?"
