IMHO - Covid Edition While family was attending to banking business in West Portal, I decided to spend my time walking the neighborhood shops and businesses. I found myself visiting Curiosities, a quaint little store featuring new, vintage, and antique gifts and collectibles. The store is beautifully merchandised, and very pleasing to the eye. Everything was very easy to shop because it wasn't cluttered and there was plenty of eye-relief between items. I was greeted immediately upon entering and informed about the clearance area in back that was featuring a 50% off sale. Since I was taking advantage of being out-and-about during the pandemic, I took my time looking at everything in the store, drinking it all in. I found a pretty leather RFID wallet in an olive color that I thought my best friend would like. I asked if I could take a picture of it to send to her. "Of course!" Then I entered the Clearance alcove! I found the perfect gift for my niece; a bamboo travel coffee mug designed with peacocks, on sale for 50% off! I continued window shopping and the cutest little mouse inside a glass display case caught my eye! It turns out his name was Timmy Willie, from a Beatrix Potter book, "Johnny Town-Mouse". I couldn't resist taking of a picture of Timmy Willie as well! I'm sure he will find a good home one day. All-in-all, a lovely shopping adventure. I will definitely return whenever I'm in West Portal! read more

Due to my horrendous as well as outrageous experience I had with one of the owners of this dump Curiosities I feel compelled to write a review and warn the community . Tina is incredibly rude,unprofessional , unreasonable and irrational !! These are harsh words but definitively describe her behavior and attitude . It is astonishing that she and her sister continue to remain in business . We live in a society where customer service is almost none existent and manners have all but disappeared . These woman strongly exemplify what's wrong with the world. Buyer beware I would never recommend this store to anyone!!! read more

Two gals were working when I went in and both were attitude-nal, which is ok, I'm not shopping to make friends (although I've got a very chummy relationship with many WePo merchants) When one deigned to speak to me it was something to do with their new things and I said very politely that I do not buy stuff made China which (as it appeared to me) their new stuff is. OMG The attitude-o-meter of both them went through the roof and the one pretty much told me that I'd be hard pressed to find anything new that's not made in China. Well toots, I'd say that 98% of what's in my home or closet is American or European made or vintage. The vintage stuff is decent. The new made in China stuff is tacky. A shame. This is an off shoot of a long standing Antique Cooperative which split in to two stores. I prefer the wider selection of the larger branch (across the street ), but praise anybody who has the gumption to open a store. The items are more consumer oriented, and are tasteful, and West Portal should be happy to have a new boutique ( instead of yet another eatery ). ----------------- Regarding the one star review posted on this Yelp page by someone earlier, I wanted to side with the store. Many stores have No Return policies, especially with one of a kind items like antiques. To have a customer slam a store with a one star review on Yelp over that seems small and petty. read more

This charming store is my favorite spot in San Francisco for truly unique and carefully curated gifts, either for yourself or for someone else. The sisters have a remarkable eye for choosing vintage jewelry, purses, and other items for the home. They complement these older pieces with some modern household goodies such as candles and soap. I've bought several gifts here despite the mean-spirited, toxic nature of one of the owners. I suspect she has a personality disorder. Anyway, I spent $90 on an antique bracelet, then returned a week later to exchange it for an even larger, more expensive one which was more suitable for my friend. This store completely lives up to its name - full of a wide range of fascinating items. I never know what I will discover there, which is half the fun. I enjoy that there are both high- and low-end items, all of which are well chosen. Repeat trips are practically a necessity! Clearly, these ladies have a knack for the beautiful and the unique. I have gotten quality costume jewelry, as well as delightful and distinctive antique pieces, ranging from a large wooden Dopey the Dwarf "statue" to magnificent peacock salt & pepper shakers on a tray to a golden poodle on an upholstered, tasseled pillow! I happened in to Curiosities and Tina and Karrie were busy restocking. As I was once the manager of three high end galleries in Corte Madera, Beverly Hills and Ft. Lauderdale, I have a highly trained eye for objet d'art. As I scoured the store with my so far 20 year goal: to find a gallery or boutique that rivaled the quality we carried AND had the eye to find unusual and quality items: My goal has been met. I've seen lots of beautiful galleries and shops in my quest, but never one that met my visions as Curiosities does. I so enjoyed talking with Tina and Karrie and I delighted like a 6 year old. I did buy a small-ish item, but mostly we just had fun getting to know each other. As I have read these reviews, there is a thread to the negative reviews: the folks did not get their way. I would venture to say in this area of extreme wealth, there's entitlement to consider as one of the reasons they reviewed poorly. Knowing what I know from years of dealing with the public, beware and take in to consideration that Tina and Karrie have full rights to stick to their store policies without being shamed. This is the way entitlement works, you get to break the rules just because. I admire their courage. read more

Very cute store owned by two lovely sisters. Got a beautiful used Coach leather bag here complete with all the associated paperwork for a very reasonable price. They have a very nice collection of old and new. So refreshing to be so welcomed into a shop and they were not bothered at all at my request to see numerous items in the case. Honestly, I think the situation arose because the store keeper didn't bother addressing the store policy to me when I escorted my parents during the transaction. A person with a language barrier won't be capable of writing a paragraph of review without understanding the meaning of "All Sales Final". I admitted that I didn't pay attention to"All Sales Final" on the wall. And I missed the print on the receipt as the shop assistant folded it with the bracelet and handed to me. However, please don't lie about "tried the best of our abilities to explain to my parents" when you could have emphasized it simply in front of their daughter at her presence. read more

What a pleasure and blessing to have discovered this precious boutique owned by two friendly sisters, Karrie and Tina! My mom and I had the best day ever enjoying brunch and strolling through the shops in West Portal today. I wish I had discovered this treasure trove earlier during our stroll. You can tell the sisters put in a lot of tlc into picking their carefully-selected pieces. I could honestly stay here many, many hours looking at the plethora of unique finds from jewelry to handbags and lots of curios as well. I purchased a GORGEOUS art-deco KJL vintage necklace which I will most definitely treasure. Karrie even cleaned it up for me beautifully-best-in-class service. My husband bought me a cuff bracelet for Christmas and although it was quiet nice, It didn't fit well at all and there's no doubt it will come off if I actually wear it. My husband attempted to exchange the bracelet but of course this wasn't happening. Based on past reviews this is obvious. I went into the shop to try the bracelet for the ladies and they basically put it on my wrist, said it fit, and sent us on our way. I'm amazed this place is still in business. I understand the policy but the one star review is for the unfortunate personalizes of the sales ladies. Update: I'm adding this to my post after reading the owners response. I was never even informed that there was a crack in the bracelet and neither was my husband. So I guess I'll have to add dishonest to my review too, unbelievable! The bracelet was never even worn. I guess they have to make up something to make the reviewer seem like they were the one that was wrong. read more
