This review is long overdue. As we were planning a move that we decided we wanted some high quality new living room, kitchen, dining room and some other chairs for, it was an overwhelming task to do online and furniture stores are farer and fewer between. We knew we wanted an "upgrade" to our prior purchases, mostly from Ikea, Living Spaces, and the only furnitue places we found in our budget San Jose last time around (discount). We had an excellent hand-me-down couch from Room and Board however, so after reading a lot of online reviews we decided to give them a look in-person while in the city for a game. What was helpful was I had created an online account and placed the items we were interested in to different favorites or "rooms" already. Once we arrived and wandered around a bit, finding some of the items we sat down to discuss. Unbeknownst to us there was a sales associate/designer sitting near us. She offered to help us find what we were looking for. She proceeded to spend 2 hours with us helping us find the items, choose the fabrics, and suggest pillow accessories. Jo-Antoinette was SO HELPFUL. Honestly this was the best furniture shopping experience we have ever had. The store has huge amounts of all of their fabrics in yardage and she carried them to the floor pieces and tucked them in so we could see how the ones we liked looked in the fabrics we were thinking of. She sent us home with sample pieces that are still helpful to this day as we choose accessories and window treatments. And we didn't even make a purchase that day. She offered no pressure. We were buying a new home that was unfinished and not slated to be for 4-6 more months but it was further from SF so we wanted to do our recon while still in the Bay Area. She also helped to add our decisions to the "rooms" in my online account for easy ordering later. Once settled in to our new temporarily home for the last few months we were able to make our purchase and then set delivery once we had a move-in date. The magic didn't stop there. They delivered to our home, unboxed, set up, moved around, and removed all trash. Four months later we are still enjoying our new furniture - it has not disappointed. They only cautionary tale I have is that once you place an order of an item from your saved "rooms" it disappears. So if you are like me, make note first on your fabric samples which item was going to which room. I mixed up two sets of pieces and didn't realize it until after the delivery people had left so we had to switch some heavy arm chairs upstairs/downstairs. I had made a note from memory as soon as i saw they disappeared from my saved list but apparently had mixed two up. I highly recommend going to this Room & Board in person, and connecting with Jo-Antoinette. read more

I recently had a bit of a bad experience with one of their representatives over the phone for an issue with a 'lemon' product I purchased. She took my information and then did not get back to me in a timely manner. Turns out, she works odd hours and was also not in the next day. She should have set expectations and told me when I might hear back, etc. I managed to get another customer service rep. to take over and received much better service. Don't ever get the Float desk by Humanscale- it's a total dud, a lemon! The raise mechanism simply goes kaput after a few years. Really a bad adjustable desk! Luckily, this desk is now discontinued and Room & Board will no longer be selling it. To Room & Board's credit, they are replacing my adjustable desk with a new model from (different manufacturer) for just the price difference I originally paid and the new one. This is after nearly 10 years and having the same issue with the desk seizing up twice. Room & Board had already replaced the desk leg base for me once under warranty, and then the same issue occurred again a few years later. Anyways, their policy of allowing me to exchange this faulty desk with a newer and hopefully better model and just pay the difference is good customer service and why I keep purchasing from Room & Board. They take care of the customer. I do wish they still sold Herman Miller and Eames. read more

I did not know that Room & Board was here in San Francisco, I was mostly familiar with the LA location. Location is vast, with so many options outside of the usual Crate&Barrel (which we love to) finds. I loved the accent pieces, and will be going back to get them in the new year. The prices for items are great- especially if you know what you want and know quality. We were helped by Mark, who invited us to create a profile which makes it easier to self-select favorites and more conveniently build rooms. This review just pertains to a design associate named Karen. I was in the store to purchase a bench. A guy was helping me (whose name I can't remember), and while I was a few feet away, I could hear them criticizing me. He disappeared but when I told Karen I heard her, she feigned ignorance and did not apologize. Someone else, who turned out to be the manager, then helped me and I ended up spending over $800. I have probably spent $20K at this store, but this was my last time (I will separately review my experience over the last year). read more

The showroom is full of all furniture someone could dream of, and the two salespeople who greeted me when I first entered the building communicated what each of the 3 levels focused on, from living room sofas, to bedroom furniture, to sleeper sofas, kitchen area, and home office / study furniture. When exploring the various floors, there were more salespeople ready to show the various pillows and throws that could be purchased as is or customized with fabrics and materials to meet my needs. Once arriving to the bottom floor, one salesperson went above and beyond to demo how sleeper sofas could transform with ease and encourage me to test them each out. (I'd already ordered a sofa online at RoomandBoard.com and was visiting the showroom to explore pillows and possibly a blanket.) I wished I had more time to explore but I had a prior engagement. spent many weekends in sf shopping to furnish a house from nothing...room & board in sf is quite large and always a pleasant experience...the staff are knowledgeable and quite professional...helpful when needed, but always giving you space to freely browse without interruption...when you are not sure, the staff encourages you to order and simply return if you don't like it even for customized orders...bought multiple pieces from beds and dressers to tables, benches and more...the delivery estimates were fairly accurate and notifications to schedule delivery were clear and easy...pay half for all orders and pay remaining balance when scheduling delivery or pick up...they do allow pick up from the brisbane room & board warehouse to avoid shipping charges...large items were ordered for white glove delivery service, and random smaller items were ordered throughout the weeks for pick up...returning items we didn't like was easy and refunded fully...did have one damage issue, but will be replaced in a few months while we temporarily use the damaged piece...each piece of furniture is quite heavy from use of solid wood...metal furniture is also quite heavy duty with thick metal...don't think there is ever a sale...actually makes it easy by not needing to wait for a one...if you like something, you just buy it...for an idea to pricing...an emerson bed frame was about $2,100, large dresser with 8 drawers roughly $2,500, large nightstand about $1,200...metal bench was about a $1,000...prices are rounded estimates after tax...delivery for a bed and large dresser with set up was about $159...other various pieces purchased, and quality and experience has been positive... read more

He also did some renderings for us which helped us to visualize what different pieces might looks like in our space. Just like with everything these days, Ben and I were super short on time but had been putting off a visit to Room & Board for a week already! We decided to stop in with only 45 minutes to spare and were delighted to be introduced to Mark! We needed a sectional and had an idea of what we wanted from shopping R&B online - so the only things we thought we had to do was 1. Sit on the actual couch to see how it felt, and 2. pick the material for it. We had the room dimensions measured and sectional couch measurement ranges for our space. Mark was absolutely phenomenal. He showed us a few different options and gave us great insight on what else to consider. He let us try out the different models new vs. broken in, recommended what to look for with material, and most importantly , he talked Ben out of buying a green couch and going with the grey color I originally selected (but Ben had called boring!). lolol! We left feeling so taken care of and happy with our choice! Definitely recommend going online and configuring the couch yourself if you have the dimensions and if you're going with a custom couch. I bought my couch 7 years ago and loved it! They offered a free fit call which really helped me figure out which couch would fit. My only disappointment is I've had to replace a leg on the couch twice, I called today to discuss a 3rd replacement which they will not cover. They covered the other leg defects. I have not moved my couch since I bought it, live in a small apartment. I was told today that I need to contact a furniture repair place. Be careful about the type of leg you get on the couch! TLDR: Super high quality, hand built in USA, no expense spared furniture with impeccable customer service. Go ahead and purchase from R&B if you can afford it. You will be very satisfied. Longer: We purchased 2 pieces from R&B totaling almost $8k. This is expensive stuff. However, if IKEA and junk from China purchased on Amazon is one end the the spectrum, R&B is the other end. MDF need not apply. It's all solid wood or plywood. The drawers were all dovetail boxes with a separate solid walnut face on the front. The walnut veneer was well selected. It was delivered without a scratch. Every company says they have great customer service. Unfortunately, you only find out if that's true if and when there is an issue. We had an issue. It was resolved with little if any fanfare. Buy with confidence from R&B. read more

There was a time when they stood behind them however, recently they have found a way of having very little accountability for their quality. we will look elsewhere in the future. So we live in an Eichler. For those not from the Bay Area, Eichler was a home developer who had a mission. He wanted to create inexpensive tract homes for the lower middle class that had a sense of style and community. They were and are the epitome of Mid Century Modern. Think Frank Lloyd Wright meets the Connor family. If your curious there is a killer documentary titled People in Glass Houses: The Legacy of Joseph Eichler. Eichlers are small homes and as such furniture choices have a huge impact. Plus not everything looks good and its easy to destroy the gestalt of the house with a wrong choice. Enter Room and Board. Lets be honest here, the stuff is not cheap. But for owners looking for a clean esthetic, comfortable and functional design, this is your place. Many of these are lifetime purchases given the quality of construction and use of hardwoods. The store contains three levels. Scattered thought are various displays of the furniture and the like. The furniture is by and large made here in the US. The tags on each piece gives you its origin and composition, type of wood etc. Another aspect is that all of the paint on the walls in the showroom is available and they are happy to provide you with color swatches. Alot of the pieces allow you to customize, change colors, or even go with different wood. Even some of the storage options allow for custom sizes. The customer service is top notch and as a plus they are not on commission so you are not hounded at all while you shop. Delivery is also quite good with each piece polished after it is unwrapped and installed in your home exactly where you want it. So what the downside? The parking can be sucky on weekends as they only have a small lot. Also a few years ago the Herman Miller line was dropped (not by them mind you) so if you looking for say and Eames Lounge Chair you are out of luck here. But they have compensated diversifying their product line. read more

Despite the fact that we had to wait seven months to get our sofa delivered, we loved our experience with Room&Board. The store is laid out extremely well so that it is easy to take a look around and see what is available. Our sales person (Frances) was extremely helpful and worked with our priorities in mind. We ended up with the Andre sofa, which had the firm seating we had been looking for. I have to say, that we also appreciated the recommendation of the furniture cleaning solution they use, as it allowed us to get rid of some of the years of wear on our previous sofa, before we gave it away. I gave the company seven months to fix the issue, but they failed. I finally had it and requested a refund. When I checked the refund, they were not giving me a full refund. They explained that the sales tax went down (I wish!) and that they would not refund the delivery fee even though the products were defective. I am currently fighting this because I am getting penalized for their defective products. read more

Time for an update. My furniture has been cracking. I received my items in mid-June. My side tables are now cracking and splitting. As a customer who has purchased 2 sofas from this store over time (a custom leather Metro with sofabed for $5k+ and Hawthorn in stock fabric for $1.3k+), I'd give ZERO stars based on long-term durability, customer service, and non-existent satisfaction guarantee. As furniture can be VERY expensive investments, I hope this helps others know what to expect longer term before spending their hard earned money. When I moved from NYC into my (ex) partner's sparsely furnished 2BR in SF, we purchased the Metro for more seating as we entertained often and to help accommodate out-of-town guests/family. After our breakup, I moved to Oakland and needed to furnish an empty 2BR home. As I had to furnish my entire home at once, I bought the R&B Hawthorn sofa as well as other seating/furniture from Restoration Hardware, Crate and Barrel, Target and IKEA during that time. So from 2007-2011, I spent well over $8K total at R&B for two sofas and accessories. The more expensive R&B custom leather Metro sofa gave us headaches from the start - from delayed delivery times to an often stuck and hazardous sofa bed (took two people to pull it open then worse, dangerously SLAM shut when placing back in). R&B's terrible customer service then made up reasons NOT to fix it and blamed us for the problem as if it was rocket science to use a sofa bed (they eventually sent someone out who confirmed there was a problem). It wasn't as comfortable as in the showroom and the hard rock cushions never "broke in" as sales and customer service claimed it would over time. But because it was custom leather, there was also no returning it so we made the best of it - it was a beautiful sofa after all. Then unfortunately years later, in my haste to furnish my home in Oakland, I bought the 2nd R&B sofa, a stock fabric Hawthorn, hoping it was a fluke with the first one. I gave them a 2nd chance as I liked the comfort and design. The salesman raved about its long term durability and said it wouldn't have the same issues like the Metro - and they had improved their delivery and customer service teams. He also stated (as did the 1st saleswoman) that if there were any problems long term, they'd stand by their satisfaction guarantee if I remained the original owner. Indeed, it was delivered on time, comfortable and good looking. I loved it. But within 6 years, despite exceptional care and very light use (mainly by me at 5'2" 115lbs and the occasional small dinner parties), it began to sag. I was in denial, but it got worse and worse each year. Then with Covid, my fiancée moved into my loft and with both of us working from home, indoors nearly 24/7, and binge watching Netflix, it became unbearable. With preexisting conditions, we didn't have people over in our homes unless it was an emergency and a sagging sofa didn't apply. But then we bought a 2BR condo this past fall and soon after moving in, had to place flattened moving boxes just to keep us from sinking in and hurting our backs. Being vaccinated and boosted, I gave customer service a try. Her response? Since we've moved a couple times (within 5 mi. in Oakland!) and it's 10 years old, they won't help as it's consumer damage. When I asked if there was a time limit to their warranty, she said it was all on a case by case basis. So would it have made a difference if I complained at the 6 year mark? Again, probably not because I moved back then (across town) and it would still be considered consumer damage! In other words, there's no time limit to their warranty but moves can void it at any time. What?! In major cities like the Bay Area, folks move all the time! What a shady, convenient excuse NOT to stand by their products. Now I will NEVER buy from R&B again. Not even one of their pricey, pretty pillows. Unless folks have money to throw around like confetti, I recommend avoiding R&B sofas like another variant of Covid. No matter what sales folks or website claims, their sofas aren't lasting quality nor will they stand behind their products when something goes wrong. Coincidentally, both the Metro sofabed option and Hawthorn sofas have since been discontinued. Most of the rave reviews by customers here and elsewhere are either commenting on the showroom experience alone or purchased within the first 1-2 years. But similar to my experience, there are plenty of 1-2 star reviews here and even more hidden (44!!) complaining about poor long term durability and lousy customer service that aren't part of Yelp's algorithm. I regret wasting time and $$$ with R&B while all my other pieces around the same time have held up well. And my family/friends who purchased similar priced and/or much cheaper ones elsewhere have all had better durability with their sofas. It's especially embarrassing to have paid so much for "quality" when they've had everything from children bouncing all over to large households of all weights and sizes regularly using their cheaper furniture without one iota of problems 15 years later. read more

I am a repeat buyer at Room and Board. They provide an excellent customer experience from window shopping to purchase to delivery and installation. I am very pleased with the furniture, mirrors and decor I've purchased. I've only return 1 item, a decorative item I can't recall exactly what it was. They also provide a return policy that is an ease. Room and Board has their own delivery and installation folks. For those that don't know, having your own vs contracting out is a big deal. In my experience, the delivery and installation crew that is part of the vendor's company provides a professional, efficient and knowledgeable service vs. a third party contracted delivery/install team. Today, David and Kevin delivered and installed my furniture and mirror. They unwrapped and checked my purchases for defect before bringing them into my residence. They made sure I was happy with where they placed my furniture. Great guys, great service! Thank you Room and Board, David and Kevin!! read more

Customers are required to install on their own. Even IKEA offers installation services. Now I know Room and Board services are worse than IKEA. Perfect furniture for the perfect tiny home. We came in knowing roughly what we wanted, but needed someone with good taste and ideas to decide what would look good in our small home. Luckily, we met Trevor who guided us to make the best choices. We showed Trevor measurements and pictures of our space and he did an amazing job with everything. The hardest part for us was deciding what rug would look best with all of our appliances and furniture. We left that decision for Trevor to pick out. He chose a rug that costs $900, which was way more than we ever planned to spend on a rug, but ended up buying it anyway. However, we did have second thoughts on the rug. Not because we were worried it wouldn't look good, but because of the cost. We went to a few different targets and ikea to find an alternative, but in the end we still went back to the original rug Trevor chose. No issues with delivery, deliverymen called 30 minutes early like they were supposed to and even arrived early. They were super nice and assembled all the furniture quickly. read more

We needed to furnish a new apartment and decided to go to this location to browse a bit to get our bearings. We came across the free design service offered by Room & Board and decided to give it a try. Molly G, the design associate, was fantastic. She took our floor plan and measurement and created 2D and 3D digital rendering. She then walked us through how to think about laying out a living room and dining room and helped us consider the right pieces of furniture. After having a couple of options for each piece, she walked us around the store to look at/sit on the pieces. We ended up purchasing a couple key pieces. Molly spent hours with us and the entire process greatly exceeded our expectations. We would absolutely use the service again. It made the process of buying furniture fun and stress-free. read more

5 stars overall. What I REALLY like about this place: Quality, attention to detail, obviously treats staff/employees well, since you will see and work with the same ones over years of visits. One staff member explained to me their committed core value system, which is incredibly significant in times like these. So it's no surprise that pieces you get here can last a lifetime. I like their accessories game too. What I really don't like: Too much focus on MCM knock-off. Pin legs make me cringe, just like every other trend that won't die. Also, the pricing is all over the map. Some items seem like reasonable deals, like the sofas, while prices for a small storage basket, towel rack, or throw pillow can be downright insane. Don't be fooled by the glitzy showrooms and "made in America" promises of quality, this chain sells essentially disposable furniture. When we were expecting our first child 7 years ago, we moved from an apartment to a single-family home. We wanted to also upgrade from IKEA and equivalent to proper furniture. I bought some heirloom pieces from Thos. Moser (a dining table, two end-chairs, a coffee table, a rocking chair and two foot stools) but they are quite expensive, and we got many other pieces from Room and Board: a queen bed, nightstands, two dressers, six Thatcher dining chairs, Pisa leaning bookshelves, side tables and a coffee table with rounded angles). Unfortunately after 7 years the furniture turned out to be much less durable than I expected. The finish on the coffee table is worn and ugly, the bed required extensive work even though we only use a mattress, no boxsprings, and the spokes on the Thatcher chairs are coming unglued. A proper Windsor chair like the Thatcher should have "through-holed and wedged" construction that ensures the spokes don't move. The Moser chairs have that, of course, and in retrospect I deeply regret cheaping out. I could have bought 2 buy-it-for-life Moser chairs for the price of the 6 Thatcher chairs that are now essentially kindling. To add insult to injury, Room and Board refuses to stand by their product and are refusing to repair them. In the Bay Area, we've had good luck with Hoot Judkins furniture, which are better quality for the price (not all though, they have a wide range that goes from meh to Amish-grade). read more

I previously bought a couch from this store in 2017, and I went to this showroom last week looking to purchase another couch. I was in the store for at least 15 minutes, and not a single person working there so much as greeted me despite it not being busy. I must have spent 10 minutes looking at the one couch I wanted to buy -- studying different configurations, assessing how comfortable I found it, etc. At one point, a salesperson helping someone else was a few feet away at the same couch. They have a knack for turning something fun like new furniture shopping into one of the most astoundingly frustrating experiences you could imagine. After placing my order for a totally new bedroom set, I've been saddled with quite possibly the most disorganized attempt to actually have the furniture delivered I've ever encountered. There seems to be a major disconnect between their manufacturing center, delivery dispatches, and showrooms which culminates in massive headaches every step of the way. And the go-to response from everyone at Room and Board I've spoken with is to just cancel the order. So not only is there ineptitude, but apathy ingratiated into the customer service experience. I have been to the store several times in search for a new sofa, and each time had very friendly, knowledgable and attentive service. The furniture is pricy, but stylish and of high quality. The selection of different sofas styles is remarkable. The swivel chairs are so amazingly comfortable that I wish I could hang out there with a book and a latte... A big plus over other furniture retailers is that R&B has numerous items in stock colors that can be delivered within a week, from the midwest where they are made. No made in China, here. You get what you pay for. The only gripe I have its that all throw pillows come with inserts. I recently treated myself to a small throw pillow for a whooping $136 but the down insert is the best I have ever had. I like to switch my throw pillow covers regularly to freshen up my sofa with different color combinations. Having to pay extra for an insert I neither have use, no space for, keeps me from buying new R&B throw pillows. Where are people supposed to store all those pillows not in use?
