If you're looking for a place that supports artists, Heath Ceramics is the place. They have a wide selection ranging from kitchenware, ceramics, toys, art prints, and even tiles! The prices are fairly high, so come prepared to either spend quite a lot or walk out with only a few or no pieces depending on your budget. During my visit, Felicia Chiao was having an exhibit there with a few pieces up for sale. However, they were definitely artistic pieces of plates and bowls, as they were in the $1000s range and I wouldn't dare to use a $1000 bowl to eat cereal out of. I ended up getting a cute gnome. When I went to check out, the person working was telling me about how she also owns some of the gnomes and even helped to wrap it nicely in paper to make sure it traveled back safely with me. read more

Subtly beautiful and sturdy dinnerware and subway tiles presented in an equally understated upscale setting. Wow.. Just around the corner in the same building as Tartine Manufactory is Heath Ceramics, located in the chic former industrial district called Potrero Hill. Stroll inside and you will find rows and rows of simple sturdy dinnerware that is thicker than most, and finished in a range of earthy subtle colors that can serve at a beautiful understated backdrop to the food that will be served upon it. Mind you, the prices aren't inexpensive here, but the quality is worth it, even for just a couple of pieces to cherish and take home. It's about $60/each for a dinner plate, with prices hovering around that for most pieces. Heath also makes a range of wall tiles, and their manufacturing facility dominated by a pair of massive kilns is just behind the glass windows. Be sure to check out the simple display area at the entrance that details the history of Heath Ceramics, with a newsstand next door too, also run by Heath Ceramics! I first heard about this store from a friend who told me he purchased the most beautiful dishware here. And wow, he was absolutely right! This is probably the most beautiful store I've ever visited. Every single tile, vase, cup, glass, bowl, etc. I saw was beyond stunning. The variety of colors and textures in this store were incredible. What's more, every piece seemed sturdily made. This store does fall on the pricier end, so be prepared to spend a pretty penny on your dream set. I really appreciated the store creating mock ups of color combinations for a bathroom, kitchen, or dining table. I was definitely daydreaming about future kitchen sets after seeing these examples. Handmade ceramics and pottery, a SF institution since 1948. They have impressively designed home goods and great color choices to fit any variety of styles and interiors. It's amazing to see one of America's last midcentury pottery brands thriving and still expanding. The factory offers tours and we didn't get to sign up but you can see some mold making process scattered around the shop and watch the factory through large windows. I would definitely sign up next time. The store is their flagship so the size is huge and they have much more for sale than their Ferry Building location. Prices are expensive so I wouldn't go furnishing your whole home with Heath. Instead, I would choose a piece or two and it becomes very precious. I bought the Studio Mug in light blue and it's one of our favorite cups at home. It has a nice exposed raw edge and it makes a nice gritty and tactile feel when you are drinking for it. It reminds me a lot of a Hasami mug but the rest is smooth and pleasant so you don't have to touch rough natural porcelain with your hands. read more

Purchased 6 mugs, 6 desert, and 6 bowls from this company. One of my mug cracked and went to the store, the assistant manager refused the exchange for one mug that costs $63 each. Heath ceramics is quite addicting. I think my husband and I saw the plates and servingware at a restaurant, and got addicted once we started throwing dinner parties, and having this obsession to have plates feel like you're in a restaurant. I like the quality of their items. The ceramic feels very durable and high quality, and we've had their plates and bowls for 2 years now, and nothing's chipped. We did have one bowl that broke, but that was our dog's fault. Their stuff is so expensive, but great quality, and very aesthetically pleasing. This store is a fantastic location. Everything is nicely laid out, easy to find and locate, and the staff is friendly. They have a variety of dinner plates, bowls, etc., servingware, and also other kitchen items such as utensils, runners, tablecloths, placemats, etc. They have a variety of colors - plain white, other neutrals, and bold colors too. Never knew about them prior to my visit to SF in December! While dining at Tartine Manufactory, I noted the iconic Rim line (formerly the Gourmet line created in 1961) by Heath Ceramics, and was thrilled to see that a location of Heath was in the same building! Staff there were courteous and helpful. They don't interrupt during your shopping and let you browse which is nice. I spent a long time wandering through the shop after breakfast at the Manufactory! (And dodge the rain.) Heath has an INCREDIBLE showroom kitchen there, with ceramics goodies on display, stunning tiles in all patterns and colours, and gorgeous textiles from around the world. Prices are moderate to high, but quality and beauty is great! I bought 2 of the Rim line dessert bowls to take home. And it's been such a joy to use them. After this first visit, I'm EXCITED to visit their studio store in Sausalito! read more

First found out about Heath Ceramics years ago in a lovely restaurant in the Mission. I love how the entire plate looked with the food placed on this sturdy but aesthetically appealing plate. I remember lifting the plate and looking at the makers' mark on the bottom. From then on, more restaurants in SF used these plates and I recognize them because Heath Ceramics has a unique look. Their plates are a bit heavier than your standard plates and the colors are more earthy and have a lip. As much I love white plates, I feel Heath Ceramics plates and bowls are really above average. Also really like how this showroom is such a fun place to explore. The staff that works here are also incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. read more

For the second consecutive year, I traded in plates for 20% off, and I'll probably go to Sausalito in October for discounted offerings. What a lovely shop. I have always been attracted to Heath Ceramic products. So sleek and sophisticated. I ordered a whole new dining set for my kitchen this year. I did most of my shopping online bc I live in Nevada. I always wanted to come check out one of the stores. I was on my way to visit my sister in SF, I went to pick up my order @ the mission shop. It was beautiful, clean and easy to shop for things. I was assisted by Kat. She was very knowledgeable about the products and customer service. Beautiful tableware, from Heath as well as other designers, along with jewelry, cookbooks, home accessories, furniture, and even tiles if you're considering a home renovation project. I've never considered buying high quality ceramic plates and bowls for everyday use, partly because of the price but mostly because they're heavy. I can be clumsy washing dishes and I don't have a dishwasher. But maybe someday I will splurge on a special bowl or platter. The showroom is pretty chill and a nice spot to get home decorating ideas. Fair warning that Heath is out of my tax bracket, but I am an amateur, wannabe interior designer, so take that as you will :) Heath is a beautiful store selling a beautiful product. There is nothing like a heath ceramic tile or dinnerware, it's quality is amazing. When you first walk in, a friendly staff person will ask if you need any help. Chances are, you probably don't. But I appreciate that they entertain that I might be a serious buyer! Hopefully someday. Once you let them know you are just browsing, they really just let you explore the shop. There is no pressure to buy a 45 piece dining set, or consult about retiling your bathroom. The store itself is beautiful, and every product is stunning. Dinnerware is perfectly arranged to inspire interesting color combinations. Nothing feels so precious that you cannot touch. Holding a heath ceramic bowl in your hands is a truly world class experience. When your done with that, you can walk to their newsstand. Here you can buy some interesting and much more affordable gifts for your loved ones or yourself. Heath Ceramics is a wonderful place to kill 45 minutes. The Heath Ceramics Company is an awesome place to buy your quality plate ware. From coffee cups to plates, and everything in between, there is a wide range of beautiful and practically designed ceramics to choose from. Their color selection is sure to enhance any dining table they rest upon! Heath Ceramics in my experience had a very helpful and knowledgeable sales team at their showroom we visited in San Francisco. It's a great experience to visit their main display room and also their must see tour of the making of their ceramics. The Company's history is really interesting. We had the products delivered to our new home in Arizona in what seemed amazingly foolproof packing boxes. Much to our dismay a couple of the coffee mugs arrived with broken handles. The shipping company also just flat out lost one of the 10 packing boxes that Heath had shipped! This is really where Heath Ceramics shined as their customer service was beyond exceptional. They have a small yet extremely professional service department that communicates extremely well between its members. We worked specifically with Michael who immediately was able to replace and send new coffee mugs. He also tracked down very efficiently the shipping company's error of our lost box of plates, and redelivered this one box 2 weeks later at a set day while I was in the process of moving! At the end of the day I now have super place settings that will brighten anyone's day. I could not be happier and thank you to all at Heath Ceramics Company team for a great experience. read more

Beautiful hand made ceramics made locally with love. Is it expensive - yes. Is it beautiful and will make you drool - yes. Is it expensive - yes, again! But this is a work of art. An investment. For high quality ceramics, with non toxic clay, dish washer safe, oven safe, and used by some of the best restaurants in the Bay Area. The staff is very helpful. If you select a set of 3 or 5, you can get a 10% discount. And yes you can mix and match. One from the chez panisse collection, another from the tartine collection, you get the drift. We mixed and matched to add a pop of color to our dinner plate, salad plate and bowl set. Tip: They have high tables set aside for you to take your preferred items and to see it in better light, as opposed to looking at it on a shelf. A very helpful store associate helped check for defects in our 2 set investment, and wrapped each item individually. She even checked on the warranty (1 year, against manufacturing defects) aa long as it is unused and not put in a dishwasher. She recommended using a gentler seventh generation detergent, and washing it before first use. Overall a great experience. The way I justified the price is we pay $100 for a meal for 2 in SF, and forget about the meal in a week. The same investment for one set of beautiful ceramics will last us a lifetime (or several years). It's the pandemic, and eating on beautiful works of art may be one way to stay sane and weather on. read more

I can't really afford any of their normal stuff to use as normal stuff in my normal life, but in my childhood imagination of what it would be like to be an adult, I frequented places like Heath Ceramics and bought all their precious cookery and crockery and brought them home to my beautiful wife (think Stefanie Powers from Hart to Hart) and we went on luxurious vacations and solved mysteries and fought crime and helped the less fortunate with our rich-person largess and had two Golden Retrievers. Well, all of that is fake, obviously, but Heath is pretty much what I imagined it to be in the early 1980s, and it hangs on like my memories of Carmel from that time. It's really cool that the showroom is the factory is the store. OK, they're not identical, but they're not as separate from one another as you think they're going to be. They have neat community events with speakers and screenings and information, and the place feels like a part of the neighborhood even into the night. My adult San Francisco mentality really really really wants to hate it for its pretentiousness, but it's actually not pretentious. Some of its fans are, of course, and its clientele is probably mostly people whom I dislike and/or who are living proof that taxes are too low because they have all this money to throw around on all kinds of ridiculousness. But long-lasting, solid plates are better than gourmet restaurants for dogs, so Heath isn't the worst of San Francisco. Far from it. The store is really cool. Even if you can't afford most of anything, there's definitely something you can buy for that person who's difficult to shop for. Don't let my inner turmoil make you feel conflicted. Remember: That's my job. And it's still possible that I'll end up with two Golden Retrievers. read more

Oh I know Heath. We met years ago when I thought Chinet was fine china. Back in the early 1980's, I had a dinner party where I served the food on the same Corelle set that I used in college. I probably got it on sale at Target. Luckily, Martha Stewart was not a guest, but I could well imagine in hindsight, the amount of small-mouth I would have received had I been acquainted with a classier group of friends. Based on the one friend I had who did have taste, I drove over to their Sausalito factory store to buy a set of ceramic dinnerware that I still own today. I had never been to the showroom store before since hell, I already have my Heath plates. I decided to visit since I was strolling in the area and was immediately swooning over all the ceramic tableware, glazed architectural tile, and even the decorative art pieces like the overweight cardinal (photo: http://bit.ly/2OlUSV7). As a fan of Heath Ceramics after I got some dinner set from my friend lived in LA, I was so excited to visit this store while I traveled SF, listed it on itinerary. It was hot day of May 3years ago, the 18th street in Mission District reminded me of Art District in LA where lots of potholes, graffiti, representing the lots of pain, hurt, depressions. But this store was as bright as the full moon with a huge nice front door, industrial high ceiling, Tartine (bakery) manufactory, dinning area and a bar. The smell of fresh baked bread and this hip vibrant ceramics made me I came somewhere else I didn't belong. There's one set of Japanese tourists ahead of me, saying "so des ne, konichiwa, kawai", listening to their tour guide, as if they've never seen this beauty before. But I knew this very well, even I've waited standing in line with my friend for two hours, sipping some teas and cookies which the staffs spread out on the table, for the Thanksgiving 20% presale in LA location to buy only four salad plates and a small flower vase. But it was fun to visit to see the people hoarding and spending money like water. This store was more likely museum or tourist attraction than LA store, but huge selection of ceramics and other stuffs like tiles, silverware, tapestries, and nicest customer services, and once again there's bakery and restaurant with WiFi, lots of people enjoyed the bread pudding and croissants on this beautiful Heath Ceramics. In this pandemic era, locked-in at home, I miss SF and this Heath Ceramics together. read more

Greeted by just about everyone working here, I found my first visit to Heath SF to be a friendly and accessible experience. We came in to do "the browse" before heading to Tartine Manufactory, and although we had been introduced to Heath at a friends house (she had redone her fireplace backsplash in a simple, modern Heath ceramic tile) we were still pleasantly surprised at all the options here. From ceramic tile for remodels, to furniture, to pillows and textiles to their gorgeous (and yes, astronomically priced) stonewear, to modern utensils, we were aesthetically inspired. They are doing many different collaborations with local Bay Area designers, including a partnership between Heath and a talented textile design team on their stonewear, and another interesting partnership between Heath and a local bag manufacturer that used a combination of leather and textile fabrics in their bag design. We will have to save our pennies to upgrade our kitchenware here, but until that special rainy day, we will have to satisfy ourselves with doing the browse at Heath, which will now be added to our design shopping circuit in San Francisco. read more

I'm in the market for a complete re-fresh, as we just remodeled one of our kitchens. I'm going to purchase my dish and serving items from Heath. This is quality stuff! Just pick up a plate and you'll know what I mean. Yes, you will certainly pay, but you will get. This is not the flimsy, lightweight, low quality dishware you'd get at Target or an outlet mall. Life is too short to eat off of cheap plates everyday, right?!? You can enjoy la joie de vivre everytime you sit down at home for a meal, with a set from Heath. Staff was very helpful in making suggestions on the juxtaposition of various sets I was contemplating. Took their time without any sales pressure. Even if you're not ready to make a huge investment here today, come here just to peruse. It's a beautiful, colorful (literally) store. It makes me happy and stretches my imagination on what I can do to transform my space with just an addition of a few new pieces from Heath. After years of supporting Heath, l am calling it quits! I have spent a small, or rather quite large,fortune here in the last decade, but in turn feel so demoralized and dehumanized by specific staff members who are not mature enough to understand the value of civility towards loyal clientele. Indeed, it used to be a welcoming environment until last year. Since then, l would get a sense of absolute dread as soon as l walked in the door. This is especially down to an older, (and a new hire in the last year) female employee in particular whose unpleasant demeanor was a major turning point for me. Adding insult to injury, the manager, Carole explained to me that she doesn't get involved and essentially lets the staff do whatever they want. Great! That overly carefree attitude cost Heath a client that most businesses would truly appreciate, but they could care less about. I just donated the entirety of my Heath collection, including priceless Tung Chiang pieces to charity. I honestly don't think they really care about loyalty as they have thousands of customers, so one less is nothing to them. What a shame. Thankfully, most businesses do appreciate a decade of loyalty and it is those businesses that l truly respect, something l gradually lost for Heath this past year. read more

Just bought my first set of stoneware and Heath quality is outstanding. I particularly love the shape of the dishes I bought from the Coupe line. I recommend going to see the dishes before buying if possible. The colors were more muted than I expected from the website. For example, the teal is much darker in person. Also, the opaque white coupe dishes have a slight pattern similar to the sand. The are beautiful but I expected them to be a solid white from the pictures. I bought one mug with an unglazed rim and now I know I don't like that feature. Feels strange to drink from. Rough. But the mug itself is perfect, great handle and 12 oz size which is hard to find in a mug. The shipping was quick and the packaging amazing. Not a speck of plastic or other bad material. You get kind of sucked into the hype about this place. The made in the USA & locally made aspects are where Heath Ceramics gets you to purchase very expensive plates and such. The cool glass windows that give you a glimpse into the factory and adds to the trendy atmosphere. The ceramic plates, bowls, cups, vases are extremely heavy. They have a nice simplicity to the designs. I'm not a huge fan of the unglazed, sandy edges to some of the pieces, but I was told that over time the sandy parts will smooth out. The cashier showed me an older mug that they keep pens in and it had a much smoother feel, almost grippy texture to it. I purchased a piece that's basically a bowl with a lid. I love keeping food hot, so this item is pretty good. It could be improved by adding some handles. I've put it in the dishwasher many times and it's held up so far. I'm just very afraid of dropping and breaking it. They sell some books, notepads, cutlery, vases, glassware, etc. from other manufacturers. read more

The quality of the tile that took 16 weeks to arrive was dismal at best. Every box had a different dye lot, some tiles were 1/4" longer than others. This was clearly not "custom made to order". Overpriced Cali hippie shi*. Nearly $2,500.00 down the drain. Wouldn't install this crap in a McDonalds bathroom. Home Depot has better tile at .99$/sf . Hope your good at parallel parking and got good parking karma. You will need both. You will also need some self discipline - your first instinct would be to buy everything in sight but at the end of the month your credit card bill would sting. Beautiful store. Was next door at blue bottle liked my Heath mug and decided to look at what the store here had to offer. First off you will be blown away by the variety. Yes mugs, plates and bowls as expected but also towels, blankets, light fixtures, tiles... and even soap. There are a few people working here which seemed like overkill but they were all great and of different personalities. Ask them anything... really good story time here. You can hear of the store's history, the artists... just ask. Well, I walked out with my mug. I was a bit bummed I couldn't get the exact same mug as next door - dark rough finish outside, white smooth finish inside but I got a cool new blue shade. In response to Carole's reply, mixing and matching is a rather expensive proposition as likely I would need to replace all the bowls with a different line instead of just one. Furthermore, how would I know if that line won't be archived later? I understand your limitation with resources. One suggestion is to systematically rotate different pieces from the Plaza Line out of archive, e.g. take dinner plates out of archive for a few months, then take the cereal bowls out, .... That way customers can replenish their pieces in time while you can keep your resource needs in check. read more

I am supporter of local craft/design and a longtime customer of Heath Ceramics. I am someone involved with local home remodels fairly regularly and aware of how much planning, money, time and detail work needs to get done for it to work. About a year ago my mother was remodeling her kitchen and bought custom Heath Ceramics tiles. She was short one box worth of tile so we decided to go back to the store and visit Heath's representative, Lindsay S. in the tile area and re-order more. Misinformation was given to us about the tile by Lindsay S. and my mother was very upset, the correction was made by the floor manager but no apologies were given. Lindsay S. wasn't able to do basic math in order to order the tile. I swore I would never come back again. Fast forward a year later, working on another remodel with a larger budget and Lindsay S. is still working in the tile area of Heath and still has an attitude problem. This time I am with my husband and we are looking for a set of different tiles for multiple rooms, Lindsay S. ignores us and is doing her homework instead. And when we ask her tile questions and she gives flippant answers and generally unpleasant to be around. We decide we need to drive to the Sausalito store to get help with tile instead since the only day we could go was on a busy Saturday afternoon and the store was bustling. I fell in love with a "seconds" vase and asked to put it on hold as we proceed to shop for tile. Nothing felt right and the young woman helping us had never actually installed tile or done a remodel and her lack of experience made it difficult to get questions answered. We looked at tile for maybe an hour or two and decided to just buy the vase and leave. The older blond woman that was holding the vase for us, sold the vase! And then she proceeded to raise her voice at us about how it wasn't her responsibility to hold the vase. No apologies. Fireclay Tile is located in San Francisco's SOMA district and has more affordable, locally handmade ceramic tiles without any of the flaws in customer experience or pretentiousness. Around the corner from Tartine Manufactory, so it was natural that former co-workers from Visual Merchandising would come as a looky-loos. Let's face it, prices are so out of range for most, and those that have it may not want to part with it here. It is a wonderful place to ogle & covet things that would be used to stage photos for Sunset or Architectectural Digest. I am kind of person who don't care about tableware but I am so in love with their ceramic. I haven't bought any yet but I really enjoyed looking at all stuff here. I and my mom visited our relatives in Berkley and my mom knows this company and also we had lunch at Chez Panisse Cafe and they use Heath Ceramis. Every single stuff here is very nice and warm feelings when we touched and looked at them and also very very tiny bit different like the thickness of edge and coloring. The attitude at Heath Ceramics is indicative of what's wrong with SF. Initially I was drawn to the story of Heath, it's female founder, made in SF etc etc. went to showroom to purchase a wedding gift. I asked the salesman a Simple question (what other colors do these come in?) and was greeted with so much snark and pretentiousness. I was like--whoa. You're trying to sell me expensive pottery yet you're being an a ss? At that moment, I vowed never to buy Heath again. I ended up purchasing the West Elm knock off for a fraction of the price. Just looked up ceramic vases on their website. So easy. I suggest you do the same so as not to enable the pretentious privilege of these hacks. But if you don't want to support a big Corp, there are THOUSANDS of young pottery companies who would be GRATEFUL (not HATEFUL) to have your support. (Hi Etsy!) read more
