Mediocre execution of farm to table food at a premium price. Crab hush puppies... the crab tasted like pre- packaged or canned crab and had tiny threads of crab rather than any substance. The hushpuppy was otherwise fried well, but a little underwhelming. Heavenly thighs were interesting but highly overcooked that it was dry. That's hard to do with dark meat even when boneless. The accompanying greens and macaroni far outshined the chicken. Shrimp and pork belly tacos were weird. The shrimp was cooked correctly. The pork belly was overcooked and had an odd sweet flavor. The sweetness in the tacos made them offputting. Again, the accompanying side of French fries far outshined the main. The fries were crisp, well seasoned and delicious. Elder Mule cocktail was well executed, but I'm not a fan of the peppery ginger beer that was used. I think Bundaberg would've taken it to the next level instead of what was used. Cannoli cake is decent, but a tad dry. Would've liked some wet component...ice cream or something. Overall, a bit disappointed and underwhelmed. read more

Just finished a lovely Mother's Day meal with family. My order (seared scallops w/risotto & asparagus) was very good! Others enjoyed the bacon wrappped chicken breast, salmon, prime rib and chicken tenders (child). The best restaurant I have found in Syracuse. As soon as we walked in, it smelled amazing. Our server Mike greeted us as if we were old friends and provided the best service. They offer in their menu a Treat for the kitchen staff, a pitcher of beer, and a bell rings at the bar. Well that bell rang many times, and I could see why. Had a fabulous meal. Big portions, so now I get to take a piece of heaven home with me. I will recomend this place to absolutely everyone that passes or stays in Syracuse. I will definitely come back! read more

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for years and decided tonight was the night. This establishment prides itself on farm to table with an extensive wine menu. wines ranged from 8-15 a glass and some only bottle options. There was a range of beer from ipa, fruit beers and cider on tap then another selection of bottles. My allagash white was 7.50 a 12 oz glass and my husbands Riesling was 10.00 for an ok poor. We tried the fried razer clam special. They were lightly battered and good for me but my husband said he had 2 with dirt still in them. For 16.00.. not worth it. I ordered the tuna sandwich on sesame roll with wasabi mayo and greens served with fries and pickle. My roll was kinda burnt and too much bread for the amount of fish on it- maybe 6 oz. sliced. The fish without roll was boring and kinda dry. My husband had the lamb sliders that were amazingly tasty, but they were 2 tiny sliders maybe 6-8 oz total of meat. We sat in the bar area as they had no reservations open between 5-745. I wouldn't sit there again. We were across from where servers got food and drinks when freezer opened we were blasted with cold air. We could barely hear each other talk across from each other at a tiny table. The dining area seemed quieter and more area to move. I would probably go back and try something else, but I doubt I would have beverages at those prices. Our waiter was nice but almost non existent as he was so busy. Total cost without tip was 76.00 (no leftovers to be seen). read more

We happened into this place during the week and were promptly sat. The bar looked quaint and comfortable but didn't sit there this time around. When brought to the table I thought that the seating area was very open and could use some separation. And the chairs were the chivari style wedding chairs which look nice but felt a little flimsy. One other thing that made me pause was at the bottom of the menu it said you could buy a pitcher of beer for the kitchen- while not bad it just made my head tilt the side and say huh. But these things we're all minor things :) We ordered two glasses of wine and the philly style Arancini (rice balls). The wines were good and the rice balls were okay in my opinion but my husband really enjoyed them. I think melding Philly cheesesteak and rice balls wasn't something for me, but to each their own! For dinner we ordered the steak with fried onions strings and mashed potatoes and the salmon with brown butter spaghetti squash. The steak was large, and perfectly cooked. The only thing we didn't care for was the steak sauce which we thought was just A1 sauce - we had wished they made their own. Our salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the brown butter spaghetti squash was a perfect pairing. The wild rice that came with it was bland though- I'd have preferred spinach or something. Wow! Went to the Cider Mill last night with 4 friends for the first time. LOVED IT! First of all, we had Mike as our server. He was phenomenal, funny, personable! When we go back, it will be because he took such good care of us! I ordered the lamb loin chop special with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. The lamb was cooked perfectly and the Demi-glacé was insanely flavorful! Some other dishes that we ordered were the Heavenly Chicken thighs, the steak and the seafood sausage special (sounds weird but, WOW! So good too) Obviously, we ordered a few bottles of wine and the cider donuts for dessert. The donuts are a must! The Chef/owner came up to our table after the meal to thank us and introduce himself. Five stars. Hands down. No hesitation. The menu had so many things I wanted to try it was hard to decide. But decide we did. Poutine, Chicken riggies and a hot brown with apple fritter bread pudding as dessert. Greens and Mac and cheese as sides. All fantastic. But the service was truly outstanding. Our waitress was super fun, provided excellent recommendations and made the night top notch. We waited over an hour to be seated. The place was packed when we arrived at 7pm on a Friday night but because they delivered 100% on food and service how can I fault them? They are doing something right which makes the wait well worth it and completely understandable. The greens were great. Mac and cheese an absolute stand out. My husband is from Kentucky and he loved the hot brown, as did I. We loved that they were a BYO. We opened our wine while we waited. Far too many people take the time to write reviews that are negative and do not take a minute to talk of exceptional experiences. My wife and I have heard good things about The Cider Mill but the reviews didn't do it justice. We were expecting a nice dinner with good conversation. What we received was an outstanding meal, great atmosphere and as expected with my wife (my favorite person in the world) wonderful time away from busy life to celebrate her birthday. They have an extensive wine list, whiskey/bourbon/scotch selections and a wide variety of domestic as well as a great selection of micro brews. The food menu is not as extensive but the quality can't be better. My wife ordered the chicken riggies and I ordered the penne bolognese. All I can say is both meals were outstanding!! We have been to a lot of other restaurants but this was tops. Our waiter, Sean, was articulate, knowledgable and very friendly. They even have an option on the menu to purchase a pitcher of beer for the kitchen staff if you feel moved to do so. Needless to say we bought them one for a job well done!! If you are looking for a very delicious meal with a nice atmosphere you have to give The Cider Mill a try. Service was slow; wine pours were less than generous; substitution for rice requested by my friend was turned down; my pork tenderloin was overcooked, difficult to cut and chew. The server was incredulous at my comment and said she had never heard that from anyone who ordered it . Price were high given our order. Positives: pasta, gnocchi and brussels sprouts were good. I was debating between 4-5 starts, but as far as food goes, 5 is the deserving number. I've been here multiple times with different people each time, and every time, myself, and the people I'm dining with have always LOVED their food. The drinks are good, and the decor is great. Even the bathroom! The only reason I was wavering between 4-5 was because it is a bit on the pricey side. Clean, organized greeted with a friendly smile. And the dining room was a weird mix of well lit while being a little dark. If you prefer a booth you won't find one here. It's all tables. And wood chairs. But overall comfortable. We were brought to our table and immediately given glasses of water One thing I love about small places like this is the concise easy to read nature of their menus. Each section has 5-6 things easy to understand. Not a giant cluster all over a small novel. Just one page easy to read. Our server Hannah came over and immediately gave us the nights specials and the wine specials. I'm not a drinker so I sort of blinked out on the latter. Then gave us a few minutes and came back. Not pushy,Very friendly, talkative without being too prying. A very good server. And as I listened around to the others. They all seemed the same. All very nice people. We started with an order of their cheese stuffed meatballs with an onion jam. I got the house special hamburger and she ordered the lobster mac and cheese. Quickly after placing the order she returned with a small plate with fresh focaccia bread and some cheese and herb scones that for a house bread were marvelous. Within about a minute of finishing that. The meatballs came. An order of 4 on a bed of that onion jam with another piece of toasted focaccia this time. Now I've never had onion jam before. But now I want it again. It didn't taste strongly of an onion. It was sweet and savory at the same time and had that lovely caramel flavor of an onion that was cooked long and slow and allowed to melt. It was delicious. The meatballs appeared to be your standard beef pork veal mix. As they weren't dark in color and had a nice flavor to them and weren't overly seared. Not too greasy a well done little appetizer. Entrees only took a few minutes after that had happened. I only tried a small bite of my fiancés meal since it had been a while since I'd had lobster and wanted to try the meal. I will say the portion size you get and the amount of meat in it was impressive. Made the 22$ price tag not seem so absurd when it looked like you had probably an entire tail and maybe a claws worth of meat in it. Was sort of undersalted if you don't get some of the bread crumble with your bite for my tastes. But that's just a preference. She truly enjoyed it. My burger was delicious as well. A bit messy given that I had it cooked rare and had a runny egg on it for that delicious yolk. And the fact they used a bacon jam instead of slices of bacon guaranteed a little bacon crunch in every bite you took. a good quality sirloin brisket patty as well so it didn't fall apart as you were trying to eat it and a good quality cheddar on a western NY staple kimmelweck bun. But to be honest. The fries beat the burger, even as good as it was. A thicker fry hand cut with some sort of seasoned breading they must toss it in. It has all the outer crunch of a hand cut fry. But has the texture of a steak fry. Truly marvelous. I know I have said in previous reviews. I'm more of an appetizer guy than a dessert guy. But I over heard the waitress tell another table they had creme brûlée. One of the desserts on the short list I have that are irresistible and one of my favorites. So I said why not and maybe over ate. But tried that as well. They set their custard a bit harder on theirs than I prefer. But it had good flavor to it and had fresh berries and what I assume to be creme anglaise on top of the brûlée sugar. I think if they added a bit more vanilla bean to their custard and made it a bit more creamy and it'd have been perfect. But still a well done dessert. Basic consensus, other than my minor suggestions that are really more of a personal preference to my own tastes. I literally can't find a thing bad to say about this wonderful establishment. The prices were fair with naomi getting a fancy manhattan to drink and appetizer two desserts and two entrees we had a 80$ bill before tip. And that is incredibly reasonable for the service and food you're gonna get here. I know I'll be back for another visit and possibly will hire them to cater my wedding. been on the bucket list for a while and finally got to stop by last night. super attentive waitstaff, frequent water refills, complimentary bread/pumpkin scones when you sit down, great drink list (cran apple mule for moi), and lots of delicious sounding meal options. venue itself has a low key vibe and there wasn't an empty table in the house! we started with the clam chowder where every bite was packed with unidentifiable fish bits. then we tried the crabcake which was HUGE, fresh, delicious... probably could have ended the meal after this tasty app. for entree, i couldnt resist the heavenly thighs- mac and cheese, spicy greens and flavorful chicken thighs. all in all, prob would not order this again. a tad salty and perhaps too rich/heavy for my liking. my pal ordered the bulgogi dish which was pretty damn good. next time, im trying a seafood entree. zero space in the belly for dessert even though they sounded BOMB (deconstructed lemon meringue i think they said? swooooooooon). at the end of the meal, MINTS! hope to go back to try more dishes! recommend! read more

The Cider Mill is the kind of place that I wish I could eat at more often. Their specials are so unique and fun. We went recently and sat the (very tiny) bar. Service was excellent and we had a nice time chatting with some other bar patrons. It's hard *not* to, since it is very close quarters! This was our first time dining in, but we have gotten take out many times. It was Thursday, and they do asian inspired specials. My husband had a beef dish that he raved about. I.decided to try a salad and a few apps as dinner.... and they were all good. The Cider Mill salad is awesome! I'm really happy they reopened, and thrilled that they now serve alcohol. read more

We have tried this place a few times with mixed reviews. After the most recent visit I'm not sure we will return. The cavatelli dish was delicious. Yet the pasta so over cooked, it was mush. We shared the greens. They are good yet different but they need to be hot in temperature. Luke warm doesn't cut it. We also had Caesar salad that was swimming in dressing and not exciting at $10 and we added chicken. The chicken breast looked frozen and tasted bland. Disappointing. Coffee Luke warm too Friendly service but seems like the kitchen is not as attentive as the prices of meals should warrant. read more

I am not a deviled egg fan but we decided to share an order of the deviled eggs w/caviar and horseradish. WOW! They were soo good! She had the pan seared salmon and loved it. Its like dinning at your southern relatives home. Warm rustic decor , welcoming staff & great comfort food. The 1st thing i noticed when we walked in was the long dark wooded farm table. It sits front & center of the restaurant windows flanked by cute little matching chairs. I suspect its designed specifically for private parties as it is hidden behind a solid partition wall. In the waiting area there is salvaged wood room divider with a sign "order at the counter" & a basket full of menus. I was not expecting the "semi" service of table waiting but the staff made it seamless & classy. The experience was more like an unpretentious fine dinning than"counter order" restaurants that just border-line fast food joints. The hostess greets everyone in with a smile & asks if its your first time visiting. Her responses vary after that, explaining to the guests the ordering process, offering meal suggestions & reminds you to take a place setting. Chantilly silverware & heavy paper napkins that are conveniently located next to the register in a weathered wood organizer. We ordered the SICILIAN BURGER & The CHIX & BIX by her recommendation. I should note that I wanted to order the HEAVENLY THIGHS but they had sold out by the time we arrived. I was disappointed but this also alerts you to the fact that EVERY THING IS MADE FROM SCRATCH. So go early or have a back up dish planned. Apparently they do ALOT of take out orders. The host hands us a numbered table stand & you find yourself a seat in the dinning room. I didnt enter the dinning room right away. I was distracted by the wall of comment cards. Rows of white 2"sq. cards attached by clear push pins on distressed wood planks. Previous guest made dish recommendations, kids drew smiley faces & a few were just comical! I think i read all of them lol! In hind-sight, this place is going to need a bigger waiting area. I have a feeling the bench & 2 chairs is not gonna be enough for the business this place is going to receive. My husband and I walk in to the dimly lit dinning area & the place is almost empty. Its 6pm. There are about 10 tables. Large walnut lacquered tables of various sizes & number of chairs. Each table has a small tea light lantern centered with a pen, the little square white comment cards & square cork coasters. The decor is minimal. Unfinished birch floors. Mahogany lattice fastened with vintage bulbs along the wall. Props to the owner for hanging the old Moreys Mill tin sign in homage. In the center on the room is a water station. Pitchers of water & glasses are available & self serve. We grab a couple of glasses ( retro green glass with the coca-cola logo) & grab one of the smaller tables in the corner. To the left of the water table is a waiters service station. On the outside of that is a coffee station also set up for self serve. The waiter walks up & introduces himself, offers us an ice bucket & we realize we do not have a bottle opener. The place is BYOB. He brings us one right away. We enjoy our drink & watch the place fill up with in minutes! Keep in mind we walked in at 6 & by 6:30 they were already sold out of one dish & almost all of the 10 tables were seated. The place is freezing. Our food comes out PIPING HOT. I can see the steam rising off our plates as they are set down & it is SO INVITING. I wondered to myself of this was a ploy by design. My dish was the CHIX & BIX. A large wide edged bowl filled with a mild creamy sauce that drowns a single biscuit. After digging in a bit i found a layer of mashed taters at the bottom. They were good. Nothing spectacular. I was sad to find that there was only one little piece of chicken in my dish. But my meal was very filling & perfect for such a cold day. My husbands burger was THE SH!T The beef was seasoned &cooked well done to perfection! This usually means dry meat. Not the case here! So juicy with out all the grease. Topped by a heaping pile of sautéed spinach & roasted red peppers. I dont know what they sautéed that spinach in but its fantastic! I CANNOT WAIT TO GO BACK! read more

The most horrible experience ever!! Reservation was for 5pm seated right away served immediately with drinks, appetizer and salad. Done with this by approximately 5:20pm. Provided the waitress our food order nothing extravagant pork chop for the husband and salmon for myself. It took close to 1 1/2 hour too finally get our meal. Management scolded us for not understanding that this is normal waiting period for their meals. I'm sorry that is completely unacceptable!!! Testament to using Yelp to find an eatery in a new city. This was the BEST dinner we had over our three night stay! Kind of out of the way from where we stayed, but worth every minute of the drive! Come to find out the Executive Chef came from the Bay Area, CA.... Have the Arancini! My dinner partner said it was the best application of Pork Belly he's ever tasted. I'm not a pork person, but WOW! We also had the hush puppies, the Ahi dinner special and my daughter had a simple bowl of pasta with red sauce. The staff was helpful and nice to talk to. We have been to the Cider Mill in the past and have always thought it was great. We haven't had an opportunity to go here in quite a while and once again was not disappointed. If anything they have upped their game. The interior is simply and tastefully decorated giving it a nice feel. The staff looked sharp and were very attentive to the customers. The place was packed but nothing felt rushed or unorganized. Our waitress Ashlie was over the top good. While waiting on other larger tables she gave us excellent service the entire meal. We ordered the charcuterie board appetizer which was one of the most varied I have ever had out. Ashlie came by to make sure we liked it and helped identify the various meats, cheese and fruits. It was outstanding! My wife had the salmon on coconut rice and I had the Heavenly Thighs, with Split Rock Greens and smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese. Everything came out extremely hot and fresh.
