This is a landmark in Tempe and a mecca for ASU Students. The original place for building your own burger. Order the different size burgers and then add on your own fixings of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, etc. The burgers do not sit under a heat lamp and are placed on the grill after you tell them which size or how many patties. So you have a fresh burger and toasted bun which is placed on a paper plate. Great grilled taste and add customize to your liking. We also ordered fries, onion rings and deep fried mushrooms which were all prepared well. They also have hot dogs and other items but you have to come here for the burgers. When in Tempe or asu this is a must and then 20 years when you come back it will be almost the same with a little extra in price but not enough to have to break the piggy bank. read more

Been here more times than I can count and it just seems to get better every time. The best burger in Arizona hands down. 100% chuck beef cooked on a wood fire charbroiler...it doesn't get any better. It's been around for almost 50 years and any ASU student, former or current, would likely agree with me that the Chuckbox should be designated a Tempe landmark. It is an inseparable part of the Sun Devil experience. I still hit it anytime I'm on campus. I had to make that above announcement because I know it would be annoying arriving at a place and all you have is a credit card so you are out of luck. Now there is an atm there but I think the charge is like $2 so there is that. Anyway, the food.......its so good. The burger I got above is a 1/2 lb charbroiled burger that is juicy and very tasty. Do not make the same mistake I did and skip the condiments after I got the bag (I got it to go) and went right out the door. I will say though, the burger by itself was still very good but I do need some fillers such as lettuce, tomato, onion, and ketchup but again, completely my fault. So good reminded us of Bobs Bar in Martinburg, Nebraska. prices were very reasonable wish there was one closer in northern phoenix-Scottsdal. The bathrooms were disgusting and the grease literally drips off the heat lamp where the onion rings go. I rated them a 3 for cleanliness and the lady in front of us taking two of our onion rings from our order. When we advised the staff member at the cash register of what had just happened he just looked at us and said nothing. So 3 is also for customer service. Unpleasant experience here. Got yelled at by one of the staff members for standing by the register with my food, due to my chicken tenders not being cooked with my order. Not only was was staff rude, but the floor had food on the ground and the cooking surfaces looked dirty. I had to take my food home due to the staff making me feel uncomfortable and not welcomed. We tried it while visiting the area for the NCAA College Basketball championships and it was great. Located on the campus of ASU, we enjoyed walking around campus after our meal. Burgers were great, and very fairly priced. Food cooked in full view, and A fixings bar to aload up on your favorite toppings. This place is so good! It doesn't look like much, but it is! You stand in line, order, watch your food cook and pick up your food, all before you get to the register and pay. There's a big middle bar of toppings. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger which was delicious. Also, I got an order of onion rings which were AMAZING. What a great burger, cooked on an open wood fire, with plenty of toppings to go around. Went here on the recommendation of a friend and got the bacon cheese burger with pepper jack. The bacon isn't your usual bacon, something a little closer to canadian bacon. Not crispy but just very thinly cut bacon in a large circle. The fries were really good too and the place has that old wild west outpost feel to it. Sadly there's only one drawback to this place: CASH ONLY. I was very sad to see this as I don't carry cash usually. I would have bought much more if I could have used my debit card, and I was really disappointed that i couldn't. Not too impressed. Got the basic cheeseburger and asked it to be medium rare. I received an overcooked cheeseburger with an extreme amount of their salt seasoning on it. Tasted like the lid came off of a salt shaker. I love salt but not an entire shaker of it. Way too salty for me Or probably everyone. I have to say this is by far the best place for cheeseburgers and fixins in the Tempe area. They've been here for years and years and they've been consistently amazing. Just hanging out and watching the cars drive-by while you're eating your amazing charbroiled cheeseburger and fries is the best. Nothing pretentious or fancy just really good burgers and sandwiches and everything else. It's got an old west type of design and a real charcoal fire grill. Gotta love back-to-basics places like The Chuckbox! Simple menu, affordable and cash only, and quite the bang for your buck in terms of deliciousness from such an unassuming spot. I got "the great big one" and a side of fries and it was all awesome! Don't be too intimidated when they throw that frisbee-sized burger patty down on the grill (it shrinks up to just a bit larger than the bun). The thinness allows them to handle the large volume of customers and leaves you with a perfectly-cooked burger. I'm not sure what their blend is, but it's a delicious patty! The fries are pretty standard, but they were cooked perfectly (not too dry, not too soft, and not too salty). The fixin' bar is nicely stocked and clean, despite what you'd expect upon entering a place with such divey vibes, as well. The only thing that was a bit intimidating as first-timers was the ordering process. If it's your first time, maybe check the menu online before you go. If the lines are long, don't be surprised if they ask you what you want well before you get close enough to the menu to make your decision. The staff is nice, but you certainly feel a bit rushed by their system! Luckily, I'm guessing they do a pretty good job with whatever they turn out, so you could likely order anything on-the-fly, and you won't be disappointed. On a Saturday evening there was a bit of a line but they are pretty efficient at working through the crowds. I ordered a Big One with pepper jack and a side of fries. I thought it was great they put all the extras like tomato, pickles, onions, mustard and ketchup packets, salt and pepper packets, etc, in a plastic baggy on the side.
