October 21, 2019 My first visit to The Chuck Box.
They are located right at the center of campus life. Their parking lot has about 15-18 parking spaces. The outside has a few tables for outdoor eating if so desired. The building is very basic and if the GPS wouldn't have been so exact I probably would have driven right by it.
When you enter the restaurant from the parking lot you are immediately right next to the line to order food. There is a sign on the wall with the menu options and pricing. Apparently due to how busy they are and to increase ordering efficiency they have you yell out your order to them so it can be in process by the time you reach the grill area.
Upon reaching the grill area you are able to watch their process for cooking the grilled items. In between the grill and the cash register is the soda fountain machine, and their fryer area where you pick up your french fries, onion rings, etc.
They offer Dr Pepper, orange Fanta, Barq's creme soda, Powerade mountain berry blast, Minute Maid lemonade, Sprite, Diet Coke, Coke. They also offer separately old fashion root beer (no free refills) and organic black and green mango teas.
The burgers are made without the additional condiments, sauces or cold vegetables. You then go to an area behind you to add on your condiments, sauces or vegtables. They have small take out containers for the sauces.
I ordered a Tijuana Torpedo burger, and a Double Great Big One medium rare, to go, an order of onion rings and a order of fries.
Both burgers were dead on medium rare.
The Tijuana torpedo burger had good flame cooked flavor, and the grilled green chili peppers paired well with it. I did not like the bun because it didn't hold together very well. In addition to this due to the oblong shape of this burger it hung off the bun by a good 1 to 1-1/2 inches. The burger would have been better on a sub bun because of the shape. The bun had it been actually toasted on the inside would have made it hold together much better instead of doughy and crumbly.
The Great Big One also had a very good flame flavor. Due to how much meat was on the burger it was very flavorful, it wasn't greasy at all. Again with this one the bun didn't hold together well.
Since this was my first visit I do not know if they routinely do the following or just today.
They make the french fries and onion rings right when you order. The burgers took about 7 minutes to make to medium rare. When they were done I walked over grabbed my fried order.
Due to how long ago they were made and by the time you receive your burger the onion rings were cold, had sweated and the batter had become soggy on the outside. The batter flavor was very good as it was a beer batter. The french fries were barely warm also. The batter on the onion ring had no crispness at all. This was very disappointing. If this is how far ahead they make them and they are cold by pickup it doesn't matter how good the burgers are as each one compliments the other for your meal. Cold fries and soggy onion rings don't taste good.
The employees were efficient, but not really sociable. It felt like a factory assembly line of robots. I didn't hear any of them greet or welcome customers, ask them how they were doing, etc. Yes, this is important. People like to feel like they are valued as a patron for spending their money with you.
Maybe you should add a bell at the exit door. When a customer feels like they have have great service or a meal they ring the bell. The whole staff then says thank you to them. It may improve or make the employees more aware of their interaction with customers. Maybe put the enclosed tip jar that sits at the register near the exit bell, instead of before you actually have a chance to eat your food. I felt this was an aspect of the experience highly lacking in attention. When I reached the register to pay, the guy grabbed a to-go bag and tossed it on the counter and said here ya go. Really! How about you bag it like any other restaurant on a to-go order...
The prices are very good. I was really looking forward to trying this place out owing to all the great reviews. All of the reviews focus on how great the burger is, and if I had to rate the burger alone yes it would have been a 4 star review. But a restaurant and a dining experience is more than 1 great product they happen to sell. Sadly the total overall experience was lacking, even if they have a great burger.
