I came here with my two friends on a Friday night. We waited about half an hour for a "cave table". Since it was a Friday night, it was extremely busy, noisy and crowded. The ambiance of the restaurant was very intimate so its more of place for couples. However, there were many groups there. The food was not too bad. It wasn't great either. I ordered, a reeses vanilla milkshake, house salad, vegetable quesadilla and the reddragun sundae. Milkshake, salad and desert was good, but my main meal, the quesadilla, not so much. It hardly had any flavor. It took a very long time for the waiter to check with us with taking down our orders. We were in that restaurant for about 2.5 hours. I used to come here pretty often a few years back. I remember the quality being consistently OKAY. I went here again the other day and my impressions have not changed. Service and food are not a wow factor AT all but its a cool hangout spot for after dinner IF you're with lots of friends and want to go to the back for desserts and coffee at $12 pp. Nachos are pretty good and so is the Rwandan french roast coffee. Desserts are not THAT large considering the price... but its tasty on a level of 3/5-- nothing you couldn't make at home. Try the ones that are not brownie and vanilla ice cream and you will be more pleased. Ate here tonight. Simple dinner with two friends after shopping for cosmetics at the Target on River Road. The food was good. Tati ordered the Cilantro Cheese Quesadilla with Chicken which was really delish & a pretty generous portion. Paula and I split a Mediterranean Platter which came with Hummus, Baba ganoush, Tabboule, Tzatziki, Grape Leaves and a Greek Salad, ALL for $15.95. The food was good and light. For the cute caves you get to dine in and the atmosphere the prices are super reasonable. Just don't think you'll save by ordering a club soda, tonight Paula drank the most expensive club soda in this world @ $3.95. Lol!!!! We could not stop laughing at how ridiculous that is for carbonated water. They have a nice coffee/tea menu and it is probably more worth the price. I came here for dessert for a friends birthday. The ambience was cool, but the service was slow for a weeknight. The dessert I chose was the Maya which supposedly had a scoop of coffee ice cream. The atmosphere of this place is great. Very unique for this area. It's a great place to bring friends. The caves also create a nice sense of privacy so you almost feel like you have the whole restaurant to yourselves. The food is pretty good. My favorite is the baja quesadilla. The ice cream is amazing and it's such a huge portion. I can never finish a whole bowl of it. They have a nice selection of hot drinks, teas, and coffees. The only downsides are that it can get very crowded and thus a long wait. While you're there it takes a while to get waited on and then to receive your food. Sometimes your entire visit can take up to 3 hours. I saw a creepy bug crawling around one time, but then our waiter came and chased it and killed it. :) Normally, because of these reasons I'd give this place less stars. Location is on Old River Road so chances are that you've passed this place many times before but never saw it from the main road. This cafe, known to many as the cave cafe, is interesting in that you are sitting in a cave like setting. It's not entirely private, but each cave is a small alcove from the hall to provide some level of privacy. It can get a little bit noisy. I haven't had any of their many sandwiches and entrees that they offer. I come here for the desserts and their specialty drinks. No alcohol, but different coffees which are pretty good. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but you're paying for the ambiance. Service is generally good once you're seated. Sometimes, it can feel as if the staff is a bit disorganized. Most times that I've been here, the staff was attentive and your order came out quickly. Been here a few times, but only ever for drinks and dessert. It's like a cave inside-- super dark and things carved into the walls. Outdoor seating in the back, which was still cave-like and dark. Anywhere you sit, there's only one tealight candle to light up the table so reading our menu was terribly hard. But seriously just expensive. DELICIOUS. Don't be fooled by the "cafe" in the title, this is not a coffee shop like place. It is a really nice restaurant. The lights are very dim and every table has one oil lit candle burning. That is where the only source of light seems to be coming from except for the kitchen area. The menu is large but easy to read, many beverage choices (except alcohol of course, it is a BYOB establishment). For appetizers we ordered the grape leaves and fried potato chips. It was my very first time trying grape leaves and they were absolutely delicious! If not for the fact that I wanted to save my appetite for my entree, I would have eaten more! The fried potato chips were great with two different sauces: some kind of chipotle sauce and some kind of blue/feta cheese sauce? Both were equally delicious. I had the beef gyro which blew me away. Best gyro I've ever had. It wasn't overcrowded with sauces/condiments like what I am used to. It was very basic but cooked perfectly. I had initially verbally said I was probably going to rate this a 5-star establishment but the lag when waiting to order food, another drink, and check made me drop a star. I'm giving Archetypus Cafe four stars based upon it being a favorite dessert place for me and my wife. We've never really had any of the soups, sandwiches or entrees offered there but their desserts are excellent. As you've read from other reviewers Archetypus is built like a system of caves inside and is very cozy and romantic. When you're in your booth you're in your little world and sometimes you have to work to get attention from your wait staff. However, the booths are made for intimacy and great to chit-chat with your friends or significant other so enjoy it. The ONLY reason this place is not getting 5 stars, is because of the terrible service that they've never seemed to get right. I still go there all the time because the food is great, that hummus, that pita bread. So perfect and their dessert is just spot on! BUT it really is such slow service, since forever. Besides the ambiance, everything here was less than mediocre and extremely overpriced. Service was extremely slow. I was disappointed from the beginning starting with the appetizer, then expected more from the main meal but was again disappointed, then finally assumed the place to be a dessert place, went ahead to order a $15 dessert which was OK to say the most! This is one of those places where people go for the decor...kinda like Applebees when they first came out. The food is blah. There was nothing special for me to even keep memories of. The prices are high and not worth it for the amount of food you get. The wait time for seating and for getting your actual food was atrocious. In fact as I stated previously, people just got there because its designed to look like the inside of a marble cave. Its really cool looking, but its not worth crappy service with blah food. My suggestion if you're curious is to try it yourself (which I completely understand and is the reason that I've only been once) and get some coffee. We went here on a Monday night I believe, got there around 5:45 not knowing what time the place opened (opens at 6), so we walked around and viewed the other restaurants in the area until they were. Archetypus has a really really nice ambiance to it. Do not expect this place to be really bright, it's not, it's dark but that's due to it's theme. The cafe mostly gets it's light from candle light. The meals are okay but they are over priced part of the price is probably geared towards the experience of eating in such a place. On the other hand their desserts are really delicious. I ordered their Calypso platter which was basically a sampler of all their sundaes. If you come with a group of friends this is pretty much an ideal dessert because it comes with 8 different scoops of ice cream on top of a brownie or angel cake and you can split the price among each other . The staff is really friendly. I was about to enter and one of them just opened the door and held it open for us until we all went in. They do the usual check up to see if you are satisfied with your meal, and they told us it was okay if we roamed around to see the whole cafe while we wait for our meal. In addition the waitress gave my friends and I our bill with an index card in which she hand wrote the quote " Friendship isn't about whom you've known the longest... it's about those that never left your side." I'm a regular at Archetypus and figured I'd finally write a review on "one of my favorite restaurants." I've been going to Archetypus or "The Cave Place" for quite some time now, perhaps just under 10 years? The service is always great, no one ever has an attitude and they're always pleasent. When there is a wait they're usually accurate on how long the wait is and it's never so long that I've walked out. As for the food, it's amazinggggggg.
