I came here last Saturday with my wife and her friends. I don't know why women love dessert so much. But this place is a dessert spot. We shared a brownie a la mode thing and a tiramisu. I didn't share my banana cream pie milk shake and a coffee americano. I took away stars because we were moved 5 minutes after we were seated to let a bigger party take our booth. We asked for milk to go with our coffee but it didn't come until 15 minutes after and when I had to add some of my milkshake to my coffee. The price is kinda pricey for dessert. And this place is way too dimly lit and a cup of coffee won't help. The risque sculptors (ambiance) is kinda neat. I probably return to meet up but this wouldn't be my first choice to dine here. read more

Great food and fun atmosphere! If you're around Edgewater or West New York, then you need to stop by and get some dessert! Just remember, every one of those delicious dishes is huge! The front space is nice, but try to call and reserve to either sit in the cave or outdoor area. The cave is gorgeous and makes the experience even better! I really want to like this place. Archetypus Cafe is a favorite date spot in the area for good reason. The atmosphere is cozy and secretive with dimly lit alcoves and interesting textural architecture- perfect for snuggling up with your beau without anyone noticing. However, this causes some problems. Dimly lit spaces means greater difficulty to read the menu. Also, because there are partially hidden alcoves, it is incredibly difficult to pin down your waiter for anything related to your dining experience. Service is slow and spotty; we were served by three different waiters during our dinner, all of which came by only after we ostentatiously flailed for their attention. Food is incredibly average and overpriced; you definitely pay for the atmosphere. The Hawaiian Pizza we ordered came out to be a measly 7 inches in diameter at best, and looked like a typical grocery store bought personal pizza. Mushroom salad was nothing to tell home about either. All in all, great atmosphere for a date, but don't expect much else. read more

This was my first time visiting this restaurant and I was blown away. This cavelike atmosphere is such a great concept! Cleanliness: I didnt use the restroom so can't comment on that, but the restaurant seemed clean and organized in general.I will put the disclaimer that it was dim due to the concep, but I think it would have been as clean with the lights on. Customer Service: Amazing. From seating us, to taking our orders, and checking on us to make sure we were well taken care of. I was very impressed -- the waiters were very personable and kind and went above and beyond in serving us. Food: What surprised me the most was the great portion sizes! You get more than your moneys worth and the food was very delicious. The desserts were even better! What I loved was how you could customize desserts (and even entres) to your liking. Two of my friends and I went yesterday, on a Friday night. We didn't have a reservation but we did get seated in a cave. The hostess from the start did not seem friendly at all. We shrugged it off hoping our dining experience would get better. It took the waitress about 20 min to get to our table and didn't seem like she wanted to be there. Again we shrugged it off because we thought the ambiance was different from other restaurants. The food was okay, not the best but we were looking forward to dessert. We were waiting for our waitress to come back but never did. Instead the hostess came back asking if we were going to order dessert. We all said yes, then in a rude tone he said we would have to order the dessert to go because he had a reservation for our table at 9pm. We gave him our order right away... we left at almost 9:40 because it took them that long to get our dessert. The whole experience disappointed us all especially when we could've eaten our dessert at the restaurant. We were really excited for this visit but we were disappointed with the service. Very surprised to discover this cute spot in NJ! Lots of parking.. Definitely ask to sit in a cave at the back of the venue. It's cozy, dark, and a definitely romantic spot to take your date. This is a great late night dessert spot- ordered the Appalachian sunshine. Wasn't fond of pineapples so I asked for a kiwi substitution which they were very open to accommodate! Went here for valentine's day. Called the day before to schedule a reservation. The girl that answered the phone said they aren't taking reservations and you would have to go on waiting list when you arrive. So when I get there, the person that state he's the manager and goes by the name of Po (this seems to be the actual owner - Warren S.) tried to scam me in buying a $100 gift certificate in order to just put my name on the waiting list for an hour and a half. This was the requirement in order to reserve a spot on the list. Lol...I never heard of such a thing. Now you would think that someone would inform you of this over the phone, instead of traveling all the way over there for such an unpleasant surprise. So I decided I wasn't in the mood to get scammed and just decided to take my business elsewhere being the manager wasn't able to accommodate us in the way we felt suitable and kept harping on this gift certificate that needed to be purchased. Bad business! Cafe Archetypus, the so called manager Po, and the owner Warren S. all get DONKEY OF THE DAY for this one! You should be ashamed of yourselves for trying to take advantage of customers. Both times I have eaten here (later in the evening) there have been no wait times and plenty of available seating in the caves. The portions are HUGE and the food is pretty good. Should be called Archeterrible. This place sucked. It was overpriced and underwhelming. It is one of the only places open late in the area, and DOESN'T EVEN SELL ALCOHOL. There is one meat dish on the menu, and they were out of it. It is considered a Mediterranean restaurant, yet has no actual Mediterranean food. It is basically a vegetarian restaurant, with overpriced deserts. Pizza sucks too. Also, the vibe in there is very strange. The restaurant looks like a cave, with weird clay on every wall and ceiling. There are also a bunch of naked bodies on the wall in the clay. Anyway, I would recommend the pizza place next door in terms of price, quality, and variety over this dump. Franks Pizza at Shadyside is AMAZING. Go there instead!!! read more

FELT CHEATED: Cafe Archetypus has a cute cave-like atmosphere, but if you want a cave you need to book it on RESY. There is a $5 hold charge for the cave per person. BE AWARE! The $5 hold charge is not refunded or deducted from your bill. I went with a party of 7 people and paid $35 + tax. It doesn't say anything on the Cafe Archetypus website or RESY that the fees will not be refunded or deducted from the bill. My party felt cheated and misled. Also, the Cafe will not let you book a reservation over the phone so you are forced to pay the $5 fee per person if you want to go to the Cafe. My gripe is I feel they should be transparent so customers can make a well-informed decision. Our bill in total was $150 for 4 cappuccinos, 3 milkshakes, and 2 desserts....that's because of the $38 booking fee that we were unaware of. I've made reservations on RESY more than 10 times and this type of issue has never happened. Cafe Archetypus, I ask that you be honest and transparent with your customers. It will go a long way for customer loyalty. read more
