Solid bakery in Adams Morgan! I've been here a couple of times, and their cookie butter cheesecake is absolutely delicious. I prefer it to the usual Graham cracker crust, and it has a lovely caramel flavor throughout. The Oreo one isn't as rich and could use a stronger/tangier flavor imo, but it's still solid and will easily meet any cheesecake cravings you might have been feeling. I've yet to try their regular cakes, mainly because I didn't think they looked like the style I prefer (aka very moist), but I'd recommend giving them a try if you're in the neighborhood and want a small treat! The staff is friendly, there's seating upstairs in a very cute cafe space despite how small the downstairs is, and they have a good selection of cakes, cookies, brownies, and cupcakes to sample at a fairly reasonable price ($5/slice, $3.50/brownie, etc.). read more

At the last minute they cancelled all of the chocolate extra cupcake orders and sent us a dozen of what must have been what they had left over for the day. I've been coming to The Cakeroom for years for cupcakes and cookies and had recommended it to many people, so my husband got me a red velvet cake for my birthday. It was awful: the cake was very dry (more than necessary to create a crumb coat), almost hard, and under sweetened as if someone forgot to use measuring tools or ran out of eggs, oil/butter, and sugar. The vanilla frosting was a cut-your-teeth-too-sweet, crunchy/stiff, powdery and lacked a real vanilla scent or taste; it was not smooth, creamy, or fluffy, as if it had too much powdered sugar for the amount of butter used. The cake was decorated with olive green macarons (flavorless attempt at pistachio?) that had absolutely no business being paired with red velvet aesthetically or flavor-wise. And the chocolate drip and red lettering was amateur and lackluster. All told, I could have baked and decorated a better cake using Betty Crocker cake mix and preservative-flavored frosting. The strawberry cake was excellent - moist cake, fresh strawberries in the middles, no fake strawberry flavoring. The red velvet was solid...it's not the best I've ever had. Red velvet is a challenge though, and I'm just happy that it was not chocolate cake with food coloring like most people try to pass off. The Mr. didn't really like the oatmeal cookie, but I think he asked for the regular and he got a toffee version? I didn't taste toffee in the tiny piece I sampled - I personally like a bit more cinnamon in oatmeal raisin, but the texture was good and it was a nice thick cookie. The employee later realized I'd ordered 1 dozen red velvet and 1 dozen lemon lavender in addition to the 8 he'd prepared. Instead of calling me to advise me he'd made an error he called Door Dash and asked them to refund me. When I called him he had a rude and defensive attitude, and told me I'd have to order through Door Dash again if I wanted to receive the rest of my order. I've had great experiences with Cakeroom in the past, but today was a big miss. Ordered the wedding tasting (5 cake samples) and order was not ready and i was told I was too early for them to put it together (i was 10 minutes early and said I could wait). No real apology after the worker figured out they had my pickup time written down wrong, and was given 4 cupcakes and 1 piece of cake for my tasting. Not sure what the standard tasting size is, but I could have bought all 5 flavors in cupcakes and saved myself some money (3.50 a piece vs. 25 for the tasting). I ordered a cake for my coworkers birthday 2 days prior for pickup and it was a smooth process with the online ordering system. My coworker specifically wanted a lemon cake and it was made very well! The lemon buttercream frosting wasn't too sweet and the cake itself was almost more like a pound cake consistency but me and all of my coworkers enjoyed it. Not stale and a good balance of raisins to the rest of the cookie. Cupcake is soft, a bit overkill on the chocolate, but paired well with the coffee. Upstairs can seat about 20 people, some couches are placed in the middle, though better to sit on the chairs which look a lot cleaner. This is my favorite bakery in The DMV! Although this bakery sells cookies, cakes, cupcakes, etc I've only ever had cupcakes. I need to change this! Anywho, the cupcake itself is great as well as the icing. This is major that the cupcake itself is made with love and can be eaten alone but the icing makes it extra special. Especially when I've found many cupcakes don't can not stand along it the icing is requirement. This place is known for their lemon lavender cupcakes but I recommend trying everything you can. The staff is always nice and friendly. This place is addictive! it's very hard to only buy one item! Pro- location right in Adams Morgan a 7 -10 minute walk from U street station ok the green line or dipping circle redline train. The decor is a bed and breakfast style with an actual nook! Great place to slowly treasure your treat and admire the baked goods or watch the passerby's in Adams Morgan in a semi quiet space. Priced well! Con - 7-10minute walk to metro station. But I was hosting for a group of snooty suburban Black women so I had to come correct. Thankfully, I trusted the reviews for The Cakeroom. A few suggestions: 1. Order from the website using Google Chrome. Add your specifics. 2. Once you get a confirmation email, call a few days before pick-up to make sure they got your order. When I arrived, it was a cute little bakery on 18th, super easy to find- it's bright pink! The cupcake flavors looked so delicious, I'll definitely be back to try those. I'm really interested in the Hummingbird cake because I don't think I've ever had it and it sounds incredible. They seem to be popular in the region and just as planned, my cake was ready for me right when I requested. It was perfect. The design was beautiful, exactly what I emailed as a picture. Classy and well packaged. The best part of course was the flavor of the actual cake. I didn't get any special flavorings, I kept it simple since I was feeding a persnickety bunch. The cake tasted fresh and fluffy, not too dense but not too moist. The frosting was not too sweet and creamy... just delicious!!!!!! I'm eating some now with a cup of tea. UGH. And I just happened to check-in on here, and boy was I happy when I saw that I could get a free cookie with my purchase! Yes, I got the Nutella cookie. So, let's go through each dessert one by one. After taking a seat upstairs and watching the crowds from the balcony, I was instantly in love when I tasted the cheesecake. The Hummingbird cake I tried surprised me. I was informed that it should taste like both banana and pineapple, but I only got banana from it. I love banana, but after learning of how it's supposed to taste, it doesn't sound like they hit that perfect balance of the two flavors. Banana can very easily overpower any baked good, so I wonder if they'll ever get that balance right? And the cookie... whew, the cookie. Literally a soft chewy chocolate chip cookie with a layer of Nutella inside. I WASN'T READY. It's safe to say that I will be returning to this place... and I am going to enjoy every bit of it. Quite possibly the WORST experience I've had ordering a custom cake. I knew ahead of time that the cake that I wanted would be hard to order online or over the phone, so I went into the storefront 10 days before my event and asked about the cake. I bought four cupcakes to taste test flavors and went on my merry way. Then, I came back 5 days before my birthday party and asked again about ordering a custom cake. I was told by the cashier that I could get what I wanted. My sister and I bought more cupcakes to taste test, went upstairs and made our final decision. We ordered the cake, paid in full in advance and said we'd pick it up the day of the party. I just knew I was in good hands because the cashier had a similar cake for her birthday not too long ago and even took photos of my inspiration pics to send in the group chat. Easy peasy, right? WRONG. The pick-up day rolls around and my mom and sister arrive an hour after our pick up time (we were told coming after the scheduled time is fine, just not earlier). To our shock and dismay, they don't have my cake. They never made it. The order somehow got lost or looked over. The order for a very specific custom cake that the cashier who took the order had sent inspiration pics to the group chat for...had been overlooked and therefore, not made. When trying to problem solve, I called the store from my car as I was driving back from Baltimore. I was often put on hold without warning, told to stop yelling (despite not yelling, cursing, being belligerent, etc.), and ultimately hung up on. During the phone conversation I was told that if I wanted the heart shape cake I had already paid for, I would have to get it in a flavor that I didn't want. Or I could have an already baked round cake in the flavor that I DID want but I wouldn't get a full refund for the cake I already ordered and paid for in full, in advance. When I questioned why I wouldn't receive a full refund, I was told by the manager that they would have to charge me for decorating this replacement cake. After going back and forth with the manager with him being patronizing and standoffish with his myriad "I understand, miss" despite him not making any attempt to understand and him constantly talking over me and erratically placing me on hold with no warnings, I received a full refund and a basic lackluster cake. I also did not appreciate the way he spoke to my family who was in the store. He kept telling them that they were yelling and being mean, which is the farthest thing from the truth. This man was flustered because three well-spoken Black women questioned the mistakes of the bakery and rightfully demanded a suitable solution. I had been to the Cakeroom prior, ordering slices and whole cakes for other occasions, so it was a no brainer to give this bakery my business when it was confirmed that they could in fact make the cake that I wanted. However, after this most recent experience...they've left a sour taste in my mouth. It would've been okay if he had just given me a refund from the start or expressed any genuine remorse for the mistaken. Instead, we were met with micro-aggressions and written off because the store was "currently too busy to handle our issue". Customer service really matters; you can't make a mistake with a service that you've already been paid to provide and then be defensive and ornery instead of offering immediate solutions. We still have some in freezer and eat it with ice cream. Ive had cookies, brownies, and cupcakes from there too and always been good. They also always have a few cakes for walk in pick up so you can use them as a last minute/day-of option, which is great. We did that recently--reserved an oreo cake same day.
