My family and I have been coming here for years . We haven't been back in a long time . Everything is exactly how I remember it.. the decor and menu hasn't changed. Hey why mess with a good thing . We have always enjoyed the food . Cajun Louisiana style is simply put..heaven for your taste buds . I usually got the pasta jambalaya but opted this time for the combo plate ( see photo ). It's got jambalaya, shrimp Creole , red beans and sausage. . Fantastic . Crab cakes to die for too . The chef was trained in New Orleans so he really knows how to cook it.. so it's about as authentic as it gets . I'm writing this review about 5 hours after we ate .. still feeling full.. you get a good portion. If you crave some true Louisiana cooking.. this is as close as it gets .. I definitely don't trust most folks opinions of food in St. Albert. This location is rated quite high by most folks but I just don't see it. I've been making the southern dishes and going to Creole food locations for years and this wasn't anything special in my opinion. Then again, the folks here rate A&W as their favourite burger and a mall m-kiosk Chinese buffet as their best Chinese food. Tasteless hacks with poor opinions. I'll try this location again to make sure it wasn't just an off night The food seemed reheated, slightly cool but piping hot in the centre and the decor is straight out of 1986. The good , the wait staff were quite nice and helpful. If this were my place, I'd likely simplify the menu, reduce the overall offerings, update the decor and make food fresh and to order. read more

I was in the St. Albert area recently and saw that this restaurant had high reviews on google so I checked it out for dinner. It was quite busy inside on a Friday night. We were lucky enough to get 2 seats without a reservation. For food, we tried: French Quarter Style Frog Legs $15- these were delicious! Frog legs taste similar to chicken. The tomato herb butter sauce really complimented the deep fried legs Cajun House Combination Plate $21- this was a plate with Louisiana jambalaya, shrimp creole, red beans and smoked sausage. The Cajun flavours were very strong and I might even say too strong. The portions were huge but it's a good dish to get if you want to try a variety of meat in one dish Pasta Jambalaya Regular $32- this was a very yummy pasta filled with flavour. It's a lighter flavour than the Cajun house combination plate which I liked. It was big portions again and we had enough for leftovers. Next time, I would recommend ordering the $19 petite version since the regular version is huge Overall I had a great dining experience here. I would probably come back here for a special occasion. Parking available right in front of this restaurant which was great. No problem getting a table for 3 at 5pm on a Friday but by 7 it was packed and they asked us to finish up so they could seat others. Staff were friendly and good with water refills. Sadly I wasn't a fan of the crab cakes - weird taste , but nice breading, plain vegetables with no flavor, potato had a sprinkling of flavor But were perfectly cooked. Friend liked his pecan chicken but rice was pretty unflavorful and pretty pricey for just chicken and rice. Friend liked their combo plate. Great portions, lots of variety. We went here for lunch last week. It wasn't quite what I expected atmosphere wise. The restaurant is in an odd shaped building. I think an update in decor may be needed. It seemed odd...like they were confused by what their restaurant identity is. However, our server was friendly and we felt welcomed. We love cajun food, and this menu has a lot of things to choose from. Gumbos, Salads, Poboys, Jambayla, Creoles...there is so many many things to choose from. Whether you like spicy or not. The special of the day was a shrimp penne pasta with a spicy creole cream sauce. My daughter and I decided to go with this. My husband decided on the Cajun House Combination Plate - Louisiana jambalaya, shrimp Creole, red beans and smoked sausage. Food came quickly. Portions are large and they are flavourful. My daughter and I really enjoyed the special. The pasta was cooked perfectly. The veggies had a bite to them. The cream sauce was flavourful without being overpowering. Shrimp was well done. Hubby's food was awesome. I loved how each three dishes had a distinguish flavour. It didn't look so attractive, but tasted well. Out of the three, my husband enjoyed the jambalaya the best. I found all of them good. I liked the smokyness of the the read beans and sausage. Our sever was prompt, and friendly. I will totally go there again and try more things. Great for large groups. Good food. Great prices. I've been going to cajun house for over a decade. It is my top 3 places to go to for group dining. They serve large groups the best compared to other fine dining establishments. Everyone gets their food at the same time, so it's never awkward seeing other people eat. My two go to dishes are the chicken jackson and the filet yaya. It's basically the only dishes I eat here bc everything else is just not that good in comparison. They are so good, my family of 14 peeps ussually only these 2 dishes! We always finish our meal with the deep fried cheesecake. It is the best dessert ever bc its loaded up with raspberry puree and white chocolate syrup. A bit of all 3 desserts mingled into 1. Cheese, chocolate, fruit... shit u cant go wrong there. I love the gumbo as well! The food is good but its lost the spicy kick most cajun food normally has. Most likely bc it caters to canadians instead. But it's still flavourful! This is my favourite restaurant in st.albert!!! And I've worked in this town for over 15 years! Tip: You must request the free french bread. After having patronized this restaurant for several years, I'm sadly reconsidering after the past 2 visits this January resulted in embarrassing and inappropriate service from a waitress that seems to longer enjoy her employment. Cajun House owner needs to keep abreast of "expired" staff to ensure the service remains as good as their food. read more

If I could give this place 6 stars I would. We were meeting good friends to celebrate her 70th birthday and she loves Cajun House. My mom and I got there really early. Our reservation was for 6 my mom and I finished our Christmas shopping early thought we would go sit have a drink and catch up until the guest of honour arrived. Cajun House had no issue with our early arrival. Our hostess/server sat us down and explained to me where the washrooms were. I'd like to say this I have never ever had such exceptional service. Every server we interacted with was amazingly kind and attentive. They took our coats and hung them up. We didn't realize until we left my mom thought she lost her glove, it must have fallen out of a pocket when our server hung it up and she placed it in a pocket with a zipper and closed the zipper. We later realized that and were just so pleased with that attention to detail. Love the ambiance in this restaurant. The menu is great. We ordered the king brie appie to all share and it was so good. The server even offered to brings us more bread to use to dip!! What a great suggestion. Everyone loves their mains, mine I had the Chicken Bienville. I found it pretty bland and shared that with our server who told me I could add whatever I want to it they would do it. The chef said that it is the more mild main on the menu but they have no issue adding heat or flavour to it and so they did and it was fantastic. I really appreciated that level of service. The Cajun House Mid-June 2021, this was our first attempt at a dine-in experience since the beginning of the pandemic, so we decided on trying something different than I would normally cook at home (I enjoy cooking as a retirement hobby and love to experiment, only limited by the ingredients that I have on hand). We decided to try the Cajun House in St. Albert. The parking lot was a bit crowded on the evening that we arrived since part of it was under re-construction, however we fortunately found an open spot. On arrival, we were cordially greeted by a Hostess and were promptly seated in a surprisingly full dining room, though it was apparent that measures had been taken to properly space the tables according to COVID-19 protocols. After perusing the menu, my wife and I decided on a few items that looked interesting, she choosing to start with the Chicken and Sausage Gumbo and with the Filet Mignon Ya-Ya as her main course. I chose the Bouillabaisse and the Seafood Jambalaya. Nancy's Chicken and Sausage Gumbo was very good, thick with blended tomatoes and vegetables and bits of chicken and sausage. My Bouillabaisse was a rich and tasty broth filled with a good amount of various seafoods including mussels, chunks of what I believe were snapper, and topped with a large crab claw. The Filet came out nicely prepared, done medium as requested with a mix of tender-crisp vegetables and roasted potatoes. My wife reported that she enjoyed her steaks, though she is not used to eating meat with a sauce quite a sweet as was the port demi-glace (she generally is not a fan of sweeter/savoury meat sauces in general) however I noticed that she finished all of the sauce on her plate. My Jambalaya was excellent, with the right amount of spice, generous amounts of seafoods, and a good amount of savoury rice. Well done! Needless to say, we were both quite suffonsified, and had no room for dessert. The Cajun House provided a satisfying way to start (cautiously) eating out again. read more

I love Creole and Cajun food having travelled a bunch through Louisiana for work and for pleasure. What a delight to find that an amazing gumbo in this restaurant full of seafood, tomato-ey and thick! We also tried the shrimp bisque and it was filled with tender baby shrimp and very different (in a good way!) from the gumbo. For mains we tried the crab cakes (made with real crab!) with roasted potatoes and a blackened snapper dish (they didn't have catfish) with safron rice. Both were tasty and reminded me of the deep South. For dessert (all made in-house), we had the pecan pie with some vanilla ice cream on the side which did not disappoint. The most amazing surprise was the phyllo wrapped cheesecake - I've never had anything like it with the freshly baked phyllo crispy and flakey and a warm smooth cheesecake inside. The flavours were great and the quality of the ingredients impeccable! Definitely a must try if you like Cajun food! :) read more

Came here with a few friends to celebrate a birthday on a Friday evening. Good thing reservations were made since the restaurant was packed by 6:15. There were lots of tables but were a bit close to each other. Parking was also a challenge on a busy night since there is limited parking in front of the building. There is a lot across the street but I think you need to buy a ticket. The restaurant is located near St. Albert's city hall. The menu had a nice variety, it was hard to decide what to have. They offer half orders and allow you to choose more than one item. Three friends had soup all different kinds, each was full of vegetables and meat not just watery broth. They all looked delicious. The crab cakes were a nice size and was fresh and moist, you get two in the full order. I really enjoyed the pecan chicken with broccoli and peppers and a side of garlic butter linguine. There were also a few Po-boy sandwich choices but I have never had one but may try one some day here! Make sure you make reservations, it's a great place for a date, with friends or family. We came to celebrate a friend's birthday and this was her choice restaurant. For a Friday early evening, the restaurant was busy but not full. We were seating close to the kitchen/bar but it wasn't too busy and crowded. Some of our party was there when we arrived and there was glasses of water on the table for each of us. It was a cool day so I ordered a mint tea which came in a large pot that didn't need refilling but provided lots of cups of tea. The menu had lots of great options including Po boy sandwiches, gumbo, and lots of meat and seafood entrees. There were so many options, it made it different for us to decide. I liked the option of petite and regular but being hungry, I went with the regular size. After ordering, our server brought out slices of bread with butter. I would have preferred warm bread instead of at room temperature but still a nice addition. It was also great that you could order 2 different options and mix it up for the regular size. My 2 crab cakes (1 for the petite) were grilled which I prefer over fried. I asked for the tomato cream sauce on the side so I could dip the crab cake in it instead of too much sauce. The cakes were delicious with lots of crab. The vegetables were a great additional but I found the broccoli bitter tasting. I choose the spaghetti over rice for my side and it was a generous portion but a bit greasy for my liking. Everyone in the party enjoyed their meals which include mussels, steak sandwich, and the pecan crusted chicken. We didn't have room for dessert but they had lots of yummy sounded choices. The server was good to answer our questions, check in on us, and also take away our plates. If I'm in St. Albert again again, would stop by for another visit to check out more seafood! read more

The Cajun House was the no brainer choice for Mother's Day this year. The last year has been really difficult for my family and my mom deserved the best for this special day. The Cajun House has been her favourite for many many years, so I made a reservation a couple of weeks ahead to make sure we could get a seat. This place really understands Customer Service. We were greeted very warmly when we arrive slightly early for our 7:15pm reservation and were seated right away. After a couple of minutes, our server came by and offered us beverages. We were a little slow to order because we just couldn't decide. And then I saw that you could combine two petite versions of entrees to form one super entrée! What a great idea. I was feeling especially indecisive that evening, so I chose this option and went with the Chicken Monroe and the Filet Mignon Ya Ya. Both were delicious! My mom was much more decisive and went with the full order of the Shrimp and Scallop Brochette. But here is what put the service over the top for us. I asked what the vegetables were that came with the dishes and explained that my mom has a zucchini allergy. Our server took this very serious. And although the Brochette dish did not come with those veggies, she made a note to the kitchen to ensure that there was the least possibility of cross contamination. It was really appreciated. Instead of pasta or rice on the side, she went with the potato option (which may be new, because it is not listed on the menu). Those potatoes are so good! They slice the potato thinly and then bake it with butter. The food was absolutely amazing. Did I need to order two mini meals? No. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! My mom loved her meal and ate absolutely everything on her plate. Which is very impressive! We couldn't say no to dessert also. We went in fully expecting to order the warm white chocolate cheesecake, because it has been our favourite for a long time. But the Mississippi Mud Pie caught my eye this time and we just had to have it. It is a layer of dark chocolate cheesecake, topped with a tall layer of chocolate mousse. Absolutely delicious. I contemplated ordering a second one to go so I could eat it at 2 am. As amazing as the food was, the shining star of our visit was the service. She was really attentive and very friendly (without being forced). When she described dishes for us, she used the perfect words and really helped us understand what we were ordering. We've decided that we will definitely be coming here more often. And BONUS! There is a wheelchair ramp and the whole restaurant is accessible. read more

9 years since my last review and The Cajun House is still one of my favourite restaurants, I still request this place for date night!

Wooooo, I'm on a roll for trying out new restaurants in St. Albert. Can someone saaaaaaay work perks? We decided to try out the Cajun House for lunch, which I've heard nothing but good things about. We went there on a Tuesday and I was impressed that they are very wheelchair friendly both inside and outside the restaurant. Cajun House is a bit more upscale, so FYI, be prepared to shell out some dolla dolla bills y'all. They have a feature menu on for the month of December, called "Cajun Christmas Festival". All of the entrée dishes sounded pretty delicious. I was able to convince my one co-worker to share with me. I like how they have a petite and regular size for their entrees, although I couldn't see that much of a difference between the amount of food given between the two sizes (maybe a slightly larger amount of meat but that was about it). Go with the petite and save yourself some moola. We ordered: - Seafood Jambalaya ($30) - came with a variety of seafood (scallops, shrimp, red snapper, mussels and crab claws). Everything is baked in saffron rice and served in a red Creole sauce. The dish was flavourful, heavenly goodness. Definitely was worth the price tag, especially considering they are generous with the crab claws. - Cinnamon pork tenderloin ($14 petite) - pan fried pork tenderloin medallions flavoured with cinnamon and topped with Cajun prawns. Served on a smoked red onion reduction. We shared this plate and the pork tenderloin had a sweet, cinnamon(y) flavour. Can't say I've ever thought of doing a cinnamon rub with any type of meat. Genius. - Dill and cucumber salmon ($14 petite) - pan seared chinook salmon topped with a baby dill cream sauce, garnished with baby shrimp and fresh cucumbers. - Chipotle beef tenderloin with prawns ($19 petite) - charbroiled beef tenderloin medallions and topped with chipotle butter and cajun prawns. - Muffeletta ($13) - sandwich with genoa salami, italian ham, provolone cheese and olive salad. This is one of my co-worker's go to po-boy sandwich (apparently he comes here all the time with his family). This seems like the go to spot for retirees and business lunches. We were seated close to a group of older ladies (aka. grandma's) that look like they come here every Tuesday, which is super adorable. Another pleasant surprise this month for my dining out adventures! The Cajun House in St. Albert is a sure thing, tried, tested and true and still around after all these for a good reason.... their food is reasonable, tasty; the service wonderful, unrushed, and the restaurant itself kitschy and unassuming. I came here for dinner on a Tuesday night with a friend who was visiting. She grew up in St. Albert and after hitting out on a couple other restaurants in the area, we decided just to come here. She says it's a solid choice. She was right! From the moment we were seated, our server was super pleasant. Her name was Ashley. She took our drink orders while we perused the menu. There are lots of items on the menu, some with seafood, and others more meat-centric. It was so hard to decide as everything sounded delicious! We shared the coconut shrimp to start, and for $13 we got some deliciously coconut crusted shrimp with a ginger dipping sauce. I would definitely order this up again. I ended up ordering the Jambalaya - Oh it was soooo filling and so good for the price of $14! It came with a heaping order of jambalaya, accompanied by an array of grilled veggies, and the best part? The delicious, deep red creole sauce (I had to ask for more because it was sooo good!) My friend ordered the Steak Jefferson which was grilled and crusted with goat cheese? and a delicious gravy! Also accompanied by veggies and potatoes this time. It's her go-to dish whenever she eats here. Note that they have "petite" sizes for a good portion of their entrees, and although petite in price, was nothing petite in the serving size! For dessert, yes we were full, but couldn't resist order a house-made dessert, we chose the strawberry rhubarb crisp with vanilla ice cream. This was our least favourite item. The crisp was not so crispy. Although piping hot when it arrived, the dish tasted like it had sat in the fridge for too many days and thus the topping was soggy. But don't let that detract from your opinion of this restaurant. I would highly recommend coming here if you're in the mood for some solid southwest, Cajun cooking! read more

I don't always go to St. Albert for dinner, but when I do I end up going to The Cajun House. My first trip there was to try some dishes I missed from my trip to New Orleans, but the food and service is so good that whenever I'm in St. Albert (like I was last weekend) then The Cajun House has become my go-to spot. First I'll just mention that the restaurant is in an office building and get into the building requires going up several stairs. There apparently is a ramp (I didn't see it on my visit, but I phoned and double checked) that leads to the back of the restaurant. The restaurant is inside an office building, so when you go into the main building the restaurant is on the left side. There are several kind of more traditional Cajun dishes (including a red snapper and crawfish etouffee). I had the fried oyster po boy, with the bowl of chicken and sausage gumbo. The po boy was delicious, but more of a variation of a po boy. It was served on a muffaletta bun (rather than the traditional French bread) and instead of being dressed with lettuce and tomatoes it was dressed with lettuce and alfafa sprouts and was served with a dill mayo. If you're in the mood for a traditional New Orleans style po boy then this might not be the place to go it, but I thought this spin on this sandwich was really enjoyable. The bowl of the chicken and gumbo was delicious, and was more of a traditional gumbo (although the sausage was a mild, mundare-type rather than a spicy andouille). The gumbo has lots of flavor and a decent amount of spice. I think a bowl of soup is only $1 more than the cup, but be warned if you get a bowl of soup with your meal you'll likely not have room for any appies, or desserts. The food is delicious, the portions are good, some of the main dishes give the option of a petite size, which is nice), the prices are decent, and the service is friendly. Aside from the strange entrance into the building the only other issue with the restaurant is the fact the room is pretty open and sound carries quite loudly. But a little noise is worth it for some delicious food. read more

We went here for my birthday because I wanted to try something different. While the house vodka was not great the merlot is very nice. First frog legs ever, they don't have much meat on them but they are tasty. Not sure what the sauce was on them but it was awesome. Tried catfish for the first time to, like most white fish it takes the flavour of the sauce which was good. The potato side and veggies were nice as well. Also tried the Louisiana Jambalaya, that is an amazing dish. Also tried them mussels and would have them again. Pecan pie was decent but the raspberry cheese cake is amazballs! Now bring $$$ cause it aint cheap but it is good. Also our waitress was super friendly and great with a bit of a big table. Totally be back! read more

Husband and I met another couple at the Cajun House for dinner recently. My husband ordered a jambalaya dish and I had the Bienville Chicken. He loved his dinner. Me, well I ate about 1/8, seriously. It was so very bland, I had to look for the chicken, and ask for extra parmesan (which I also had a hard time seeing). I took the balance of my meal home. I left somewhat hungry, the wine helped LOL I regret not saying something to the waitress but the restaurant was one of two our friends suggested and I did not want to offend them. Wait staff was excellent. Parking terrible-the lot was full but the restaurant was not. Would I go back? Maybe. PS My husband ate my leftovers. Used salt and pepper and said garlic toast would have been good with it and more peppers. read more

Always a top shelf dinner, probably the best steaks in town. Their Jambalaya & other cajun dishes are fantastic & are obviously made from quality ingredients. Service always is usually an A grade but one "big lady" forgets about you after your meal is on the table, ask her for a second drink before your food is tabled because she'll disappear after that even if you go ask her. Last time i tried Frogs Legs for the first time for lunch..the service was a little slow for lunchtime.. ..We will go back..I think they could update there decor a little..it doesn't feel like fine dining or a place for a night out. but food is good. read more

I've heard so much about The Cajun House so my expectations were quite high. I'm not sure it's lived up to them. I had the Shrimp Po-boy with a side of Crab Corn Gumbo and it only cost $12.60 but I expected more flavor in the dish. The Po-boy had crispy deep fried shrimp but it was on a totally wrong bun instead of a french baguette and it was only paired with tomato and alfalfa sprouts. There was also a creamy sauce that offered the only bit of flavor. The gumbo was mediocre at best. Felt like it was thickened with flour and didn't have much crab. The fresh green onion garnish was the nicest part. I will continue to try different dishes but my first introduction to the Cajun House wasn't great. read more

Good friends treated my husband and I to a meal at this fun little spot. The restaurant itself is in a professional building, but once inside, the atmosphere is definitey anything but business. The cocktail menu was interesting and I enjoyed the whiskey "martini". My husband thought his Cesar garnished with shrimp was just right. Our fresh oysters were the perfect start and super fresh, which was quite a pleasant surprise for Edmonton. The wine list was small, but complimented the menu nicely. We all tried different dishes and while some were not authentic to the Louisiana theme of the menu, they were all quite good. The Blackened Snapper and Jackson Filet were standouts of the meal. My Seafood Jambalaya was not quite what you'd expect to get in the south. The seafood was fresh and cooked nicely, but the rice and seasoning were all wrong. This southern girl was left wishing she'd opted for one of the creative fish dishes instead. You really can't blame a Canadian restaurant for not being completely authentic, but I would suggest a quick glace at few jambalaya recipes or even an episode of Emeril for the chef. read more

I had a friend bring me here for dinner on Friday, and really enjoyed the setting of the Cajun House. Beautiful and comfy decor made my meal enjoyable. The Service was the best part of it, our server had her timing down perfect. She wasn't pushy, and one thing that stood out to me was, she didn't ask us to refill our waters, instead let us enjoy our conversation. I wasn't overly impressed with the wine menu. But they made me a great ceaser drink! Now the food, I enjoyed reading the menu. And they weren't kidding with the meal portions. I should have got a petite meal cause I was stuffed after! But the food was missing some flare to it, I though my meal was just okay. But overall, my dinner was good. I didn't feel rushed even though the place was getting full. My partner took me here for my birthday and we were really excited to try a good Cajun place and he had heard good things about it. The decor is reminiscent of Boston pizza but we were hoping that maybe the restaurant put the focus on the food. For a drink I ordered the Creole Bloody Mary. It came with a piece of shrimp and celery. The drink was really good. I saw a lot of compliments on the customer service on their Yelp page. Maybe we came on a bad night. The server was really nice. The food didn't take too long. But she dropped it off and didn't check on us again until we were finished. No one asked if I wanted a second drink. There were a few servers on staff but they didn't circulate much and mostly hung out at the bar chatting while our server ran around. Our food arrived and it looks delicious. I ordered the seafood jambalaya and my partner ordered a combination plate. His red beans and rice were nice and smoky. My dish looked lovely and was a generous serving but once I got through the crab legs I was disappointed to find that the rest of the dish was bland and watery. It was filling but so boring. I've heard the entire spectrum of reviews of this restaurant. From great to mediocre to fantastic. Sadly I had a mediocre experience. My husband had the jambalaya with alligator sausage and said it was "good" :) I had the fish (it was the Valentines special) and it wasn't special. Saffron rice tasted like normal uncle bens with yellow food colouring and the vegetables were way undercooked. The coffee and cheesecake wrapped in phyllo were delicious! Also noticed that the noise level was very loud and the restaurant was not full. read more

The Cajun House has been around for quite some time for a good reason. The food is always delicious and the service friendly. My daughter and I have the petite portion whenever we order as the servings are quite large. I always have the Seafood Jambalaya Pasta which comes with a generous amount of sausage. It's very busy on weekends, so don't expect to get seated right away if you go then. We usually go during the week and are seated immediately. read more

The Cajun as a unique menu and it's filled with great food. I think there is something on the menu for everyone. I actually just want to comment on their deep fried white chocolate cheesecake. WOW. It is amazing! It's drizzled in raspberry sauce and probably one of best desserts I have had in a long time! Other than that the service is good.. pretty average. Visited The Cajun House on my wife's birthday dec 14th/18. Friday evening easy parking at the time moderately busy just then we're seated quickly by reservation had a drink while ordering the waitress was very accommodating and even put up with my corny jokes with a laugh or two. I had the jambalaya extra spicy with a Caesar in a mason jar could barely finish the meal it was a full plate and extremely delicious! I wud recommend this place hands down ... located in the artsy fartsy hub of St albert easy access from the Trail. read more
