This is a review where I wish there were half stars. Three is too little. Four is too many, but just for my first visit.... and it's me not the restaurant. I was not prepared for the seafood boil experience and in hindsight I could have been. While the menu, the ordering, and the presentation might seem unconventional, I did a little research after and found out that the seafood boil experience here is pretty authentic. Things that I liked are: the casual approach to seating, the service was fast, I love the brown paper on the tables, throwing my shrimp shells onto the brown paper, the plastic gloves they give you because its fun messy! The large beer selection, and all the food we tried! Comfy booth seating, and lots of parking out front. Things that I was unprepared for were: my meal came in a bag, I had to ask for a side plate, and no wine on the menu. However, let me say the shrimp, corn and potato in a bag with butter and garlic got better and better the longer it sat in that garlicy butter. The fish and chips were crispy, hot and yummy. We didn't opt for the pricier choices but I will say the market prices for seafood did not seem out of line. I'd sum it up as a seafood experience. read more

Pricey. Messy. Good unique flavours. Skip the crawfish. Poorly executed service of food. (Our food was served at different times on our table as we waited for all the food to come at once when we clearly stated we were sharing). I was happy to hear a location is in north side. Its small with just a handful of tables like 8 or so...so come before 5pm or after 730pm to avoid waiting. Dining does take about 1.5 hours despite the food coming out relatively fast after ordering. I did not like how they served everything as it was ready...so one person got their food about 10 minutes after someone else. The chicken wings we ordered were served last instead of as an appetizer which is a huge mistake for any restaurant. Dont do this!!! It makes for a terrible dining experience. We had the lobster, the dungess crab and the crayfish. I would say that its a pretty good portion for 1 person and it was filling for me. The crayfish was not worth it as it was so difficult to eat and so little meat in those tiny peices. My tip...dont fool around here. Order the star attractions like lobster or crab. Get the seafood rice. Skip the potatoes and side upgrades. Those extras add up significantly and they were not at all worth it. It did not improve the flavours, it just made our bill more outrageous expensive. The seafood rice is delicious. It is different from any rice ive had and it actually had decent amounts of seafood rice in them. The captain boil flavouring was my favourite as the cajun flavouring was a tad too overpowering for the seafood. It is messy. Put on a bib, roll up your sleeves and get cracking here. Its not ideal for everyday snacking but it is nice for special occassions to get dirty while eating. More of a family place instead of a date night place. Service is ok. The timing of food was haphazardly served. When youre paying $200 for a meal for 3, you expect service to be on point and stellar. It also felt like we were rushed to eat and leave. We kept getting asked if we wanted things packed to go while we were still eating bc there was people waiting at the door. It isnt cool and ruins the dining experience bc this place is not considered fast food. Meh...these things bother me enough i wont be back on peak times to avoid these hassles. read more

Walking into this restaurant was refreshing, nice bricks on the wall, lots of big windows so great light. I loved that the place didn't smell like seafood like some restaurants do. The fact that it didn't have carpet was very smart. The tables are covered in large sheets of paper instead of a table cloth, there are bibs and plastic gloves already setup. We sat at a both and water was dropped off right away. Once we settled into having a glance at the menu our amazing server came by to ask if we had ever been to Captain's Boil and if we needed any help with the menu and how to order. He explained the process and helped us out with his opinion and the most recommended. He was very knowledgable. We were conflicted about trying crawfish and he was so great with suggesting that he could ask the kitchen if they were able to make us just 2 crawfish so we could try it out and order our regular meals. We ordered a half dozen fresh oysters, very fresh and delicious. $20 for the 6 oysters. The menu shows you that there are steps regarding ordering. The cost is according to the catch that you choose. Step One - Choose your catch (1lb) We ordered the mix and match, you get 1/2 a lb of each, We ordered shrimp and mussels. Step Two - Choose your flavour We chose the Captain's Boil , which is a mixture of all three sauces. Step Three - Choose your heat We chose mild, to be honest I thought it would be a little spicy and it isn't I would probably recommend going to medium. With your meal you also have the options for 2 sides, you have the option of getting the regular sides ( corn, potato or steamed rice) We decided to go with Corn and Potato. The premium sides are a little over priced. The food comes in a plastic bag and you receive a bucket for the shells. The experience was different, the shrimp are head on and have the full shells, which is a little tedious to d-shell from a bag, and you have mussels on the half shell. the potato and corn are also in the bag soaking up the amazing flavour of the sauce. Overall a great experience. I would defiantly return to try something else off the menu. The server is a huge reason for the experience. He was always on top of things and made sure to check on us. read more

Dead, slow, incompetent. Unacceptable. Came here as a group of 3 at 12pm on a Saturday. Took 10 minutes to place an order only to be told 10 minutes later that the fish was not prepped. It is lunch rush hour on a weekend, how can a business be so incompetent to not prep their fish lunch special. It is not something that is out rarely ordered or obscure by any means but a featured lunch special. The waitress had no idea that the fish teriyaki for the sizzling plate was not prepped... How hard is it to defrost fish fillet early? We were the only table service customers and it still took 30 minutes for food to be brought out. Unacceptable service, won't be back. read more

Went for lunch on Saturday. Was supposed to be joined by a friend. My friend couldn't make it so it was just me. Since I had already ordered a drink I though I would have lunch anyways. I ordered lunch and waited and waited and waited. Nothing special about my order. All off the menu with no alterations. After half an hour I told my waiter I would just take my food to go. Still I waited and waited. 50 minutes AFTER I had ordered lunch the franchisee came to apologize about the delay. 50 MINUTES after I ordered. Still no food. The waiter never, ever said anything to me about the delay and never returned to my table after the franchisee spoke to me. Every single table in the restaurant received food after I ordered. At least two tables arrived after I ordered, ordered their food, ate their food and left. Still, I waited. An hour after I ordered the food arrived. The franchisee made an attempt at reconciliation and gave me half off my bill. However, the food didn't travel well. Can't really judge the quality of the food by the order because of the delay involved. Generally speaking the food was ok and hopefully would have tasted better eaten fresh. Given a reasonable wait for my food I may have had a much better experience. When a restaurant is busy forgetting a customer while trying to serve the rest of the customers might work out well for everyone but the forgotten customer. The franchisee could have handled it better. Like when I said how the waiter hadn't spoken to me once about the delay in the food perhaps having the waiter come up and speak to me might have been a good idea. When I asked why the kitchen staff singled out my meal he just stared at me blankly. I get that the franchisee though he was doing a good thing in taking half off the meal. Went in on a Friday at 4:30 - music system playing at an uncomfortable level. That should have been a clue for me. If a restaurant can't get that right what else are they getting wrong? In fact it was so loud the family at the next table had a discussion about it and the grandpa had to turn off his hearing aids as it was uncomfortable for him. Overall the service was poor, inattentive, and I guess I don't get the concept overall. Here's a bag of crab with a bunch of minced garlic and butter - good luck eating that with your hands. This was not a good experience! The seafood was crazy salty and way over sauced. Payed additional for premium sides that were a soggy mess swimming in far too much garlic. Way too expensive for what we got. The serving sizes were actually disrespectful. It was literally inedible and extremely disappointing. Me and my friend got the calamari to start and it was dry and flavourless, yet they ended up being the best dish of the evening. My friend ordered the lobster poutine. The picture in the menu is disgustingly exaggerated. This little tiny dish came out with with the tiniest shreds of lobster, literally almost nonexistent, and sauce that looked like someone had eaten it before and spat it back out (I wouldn't have blamed them) I got the lobster sliders, and for the $32 I payed, I would've expected something worth my time. The bun it was served on was heavy and filled with butter or oil and coated my mouth in a film of nasty. The lobster wasn't any better, it was cold and shredded and tasted like it had sat in the basement in a bowl full of skim milk for 8 weeks. This was horrifying for us, the milk lobster completely ruined the experience and we honestly couldn't bring ourselves to eat any more than a few bites out of fear our meals would come back up. To top it off a fly flew around our table the entire time and even landed on our poutine. In the end we had to leave after only a few bites of each dish and asked to take it to go so we could throw it out at home. Lacking heavily in flavour. Yes there's spice but no real flavour. Potato was literally just a whole potato cut in half. Service was lacking. Food was cold quickly due to being served in plastic bags. Was even offered a gift card to come back but we refused as we will not being coming back or encouraging others to. So much plastic. Even if it's biodegradable, micro plastics are killing us and our oceans. Do better! read more
