As a Newfoundlander I crave a taste of home when I'm feeling particularly home sick. Insert Atlantic Kitchen to remedy my pains. Atlantic Kitchen never disappoints when it comes to that "feels like home" hospitality. Always warm and friendly. But that kinda warm and friendly that comes from being served by your cousin or someone you already know. Non-pretentious and inviting. I've dined here a few times now and I always have the same thing. Onion Rings and Fish and Chips (with dressing and gravy of course). A true Newfoundland way. While the fish isn't quite as good as home, it fills that void and is done quite well. The chips are fresh cut, the gravy is perfect and the dressing, while not as good as Nan's, hits the spot. The atmosphere is charming, very clean and really nothing fancy. That's not to say it isn't nice, it's just basic. True Newfoundland music warms your heart and reminds you of home and kitchen parties! A small retail space features treats from home and east coast apparel. I recommend trying some Purity Jam Jams! Came here Saturday 1PM. Only 10% full. Waitress was super chatty and kind. Lots of nick knacks and Newfoundland souvenirs here which was fun to browse while we waited for our order. All 3 of us got the 2 piece cod fish and chips. + 1 side order of gravy. Great portion for the price. Fish was unfortunately a little colder than I would have liked - I thought the fish inside should be hotter. Breading was too greasy and thick for me. Portion of actual fish inside was very good though. Fries were not the style I like ( I like extra crispy shoe strings). These were super fat and soggy in my opinion but very home-style. Tartar sauce jug on the table was great. Coleslaw was also better than I expected but really fine (minced/cut up into such small pieces). Gravy was very good. We came for fish and chips , and definitely were not disappointed! Food was fresh, hot and delicious, as always. We have never had a bad meal here. I had the three piece haddock and chips and was surprised I was able to eat it all! Huge portions! The service was awesome. It felt like I was in my Nan's kitchen as a kid. Bustling and happy. Came to Atlantic Kitchen with the family last night at about 630pm. We waited for a good five minutes to be acknowledged by staff - admittedly they were slammed which is awesome but even a smile would have been welcomed. There is no place to sit while waiting upon entering either. The atmosphere was bright and lively with Newfieesque music playing, lots of tables (no booth options here) and natural light. Upon being seated we waited another 15 minutes for water and to order. They were out of my top choices of mussels, calamari, and onion rings (not house made). After another 45 minutes (restaurant 1/2 empty by now) we began to receive our food: Bowl of Clam Chowder - $6.95 Large and full of flavour. It was more of a broth based soup and coming from the West Coast I think my preference leans towards cream based chowders. Kiddo Dino Nuggets (4) & fries - $6.95 Son gobbled up the fries and nuggets with a smile! Kiddo Grilled Cheese & Fries - $6.95 Daughter didn't care for the grilled cheese though I thought it was yummy! Could be improved with cheese all the way to the crust rather than an 1" from the crust. Daughter also gobbled up the fries! 3 piece Haddock & Chips - $24.95 Hubby loved this! Nice large white firm flaked fish with the perfect batter 3 piece Cod & Chips - $22.95 Gramma loved this, too! Very similar to the Haddock but I'd say slightly less firm and more flaky. LARGE and tasty portions of fish and fries. I could easily share a 3 piece with hubs and a side. And a table order of Mac 'n Cheese bites to share - $6.95. Daughter loved these but they didn't wow me - tasted like processed cheese inside, almost Kraft Dinner like. The total bill was a dollar shy of $80 for 2 kiddo meals, 2 - 3 piece fish n chips, 1 Mac n cheese bite, and a bowl of chowder. I'd absolutely come back here when craving some fish 'n chips and Great Big Sea. I'd split a 3 piece with hubs and order a side next time to keep the cost down. Their menu had several non Seafood items as well but when in Rome or in this case, NFLD! As a side, the vinegar bottles seemed to have a defect where they spilled all over and leaked out the sides even when we carefully checked that lids kids were screwed on tightly. read more

Where do I start... Sigh. The St. Albert location started out good. A few years ago... Sadly the establishment has dwindled over the past couple years... I might even say "Tanked". Where do I start? Hmmmm. I asked for an order of clam strips and fries... What did I get? Clam "BITS" and fries. WTF are clam bits? I'll tell you... Disgusting little pieces of left over shit from the sea. I asked the waitress what this monstrosity was and she smiled, "Clams and chips" I was sooo disappointed.... After finding out clams are a rare commodity I forgave them. Forward a few months... They offer what they claim to be a "Jigs dinner". It's a Sunday special. The portion was so small I asked for a side order of fries. Well... The best part of the meal was the glass of water. Erm... The turkey was OK. Super dry unless the sub par gravy was lathered upon it. 5 small cubes of salt beef were the main course. Almost all fat and sinew. Oh... The side of fries... A pool of grease... I couldn't eat more than a few. I felt ill even before I left the venue. I realize bad days happen and sometimes the kitchen "Shits the bed". I probably would visit again just because I am from "Down Home" However, The waitress who served us was quite rude and unapologetic. After I expressed my dislike for the food she quickly retorted "I don't care. We have other customers" Will never enter "Atlantic Kitchen" again. read more

The place was nice and clean. We ordered take out through skip the dishes. I was so excited because i havent had great fish and chips for a while so I went all out and ordered Halibut. The presentation wAs promising but when i had a bite of the fish, it was extremely dry. Chewy. I always go for halibut because i find that haddock is dry and stiff so, i am disappointed to have my halibut taste worse than haddock. We also ordered veal and that was good. The clams were ok. Maybe this is a one off... i'll have to try them again sometime. read more

A solid 3 stars. Nothing wrong with that. St. Albert is thrilled to have another fish & chip joint in town. And they go far beyond that too, with lots of east coast offerings. The set up is a little strange though. You seat yourself, but as far as I can tell, they are always busy. So you just kind of stand in a group at the door and wait for a table to become available. Which was a little uncomfortable, but gave me a chance to awkwardly look at other people's food so I could decide what I wanted lol There is a bit of space at the door, so I'm hoping that they are going to put in a hostess station eventually. Once a table opened up, we sat down and ordered as quickly as we could since it was obvious that other tables were waiting a long time. The wait was almost excruciating. And there was no music playing. I'm guessing there was something wrong because every 15 minutes or so, a song would start and play for a minute or so, then it was gone again. It made for a long, quiet wait. Aside from the music issue, the atmosphere was good. They have fit as many tables in as they could, without making it too crowded. The servers were all really friendly. They have a small selection of beer and wine on tap, as well as various pops (all in cans). Along with the standard sodas, they also had a few extra Crush flavours that I think you can typically only get on the East Coast, or in specialty stores. The menu was vast. Loads to choose from. We both went with the Cod and Chips, but I upgraded my side to the "newfie mess" poutine. Which is the traditional gravy and cheese curds, along with ground beef and dressing. It was okay, but I don't think I'll order it again. Definitely not worth the $9.00 upcharge, even though you do get quite a bit of it. The fish was flaky and the batter was crispy. This is the worst fish and chips I have ever had in my 70+ years and I pride myself on being quite a connoisseur of the humble meal. We were the first customers of the day and the chips were stale, 3" of fish was wrapped in 6" of batter, Just disgusting. I did tell the waitress and she said she was sorry I didnt enjoy the meal. So we tried this place the other day, and I have to say- they served me the best fish and chips I've had in a loooong time. It was fairly steady when we arrived (of course, lunch time on Black Friday) but we still found the service a little on the slow side. Nonetheless, the decor was charming, the menu was varied, and all-in-all the atmosphere was very relaxed and cozy. We decided to order two different meals and share the dishes between us. A 2-piece fish and chips (cod) and the fish burger. Both meals were delicious, but my favorite was the fish and chips. Huge pieces of fish perfectly cooked, moist and flaky inside. The batter wasn't too heavy and cooked golden brown- a little on the oily side, but not enough to make a negative impact on me. The coleslaw was okay and the fries were good, but would not have been very good re-heated. We will definitely return to The Atlantic Kitchen, but probably not on a regular basis. The price isn't the best, but it isn't the worst either. Next time I'm looking for some fish and chips, this is where you'll find me. read more

I really wanted to like this place, the name really makes you feel like you will get a nice home cooked style of meal, the pleasant atmosphere and the seat yourself, and kind servers provided that, but the food we ordered did not convey the same note. My boyfriend and I came here and started with the calamari, it was a very small portion and overly fried and served with cocktail sauce. I had the mussels as a meal and there was hardly any sauce, very bland, and I had the clam chowder, which I'm sorry to say but I would of rather of ate a canned version, the soup had no flavour, definitely needed spices and salt. My boyfriend had the breaded cod and fries and enjoyed the fries, the cod was ok, and the coleslaw was nothing special, and I think that is what bothers me the most is just the lack of "special" in the meals. We have been to other fish and chip restaurants and this one falls behind. I liked that it had a little store aspect to it where you could buy seafood and spices and candy but unfortunately I would go to another restaurant while visiting St.Albert first. read more

If you are going on a Friday or Saturday night, GO EARLY. We were a table of 3 and a half (my 2 year old is the half); took us about 7-10 minutes before a table cleared so we could take it. Parking lot was flooded in about a foot and a bit of water but the medical building next door had an empty lot by about 5pm so that's ok. *YOU SEAT YOURSELF* (critical to know this before going in). There are high chairs available and colouring sheets available as well (and the kids menu was really quite versatile as my kiddo prefers hotdogs over anything else on the planet; also their seniors menu is for 60+ which is great). The ambience is typical of a fish and chips place but I felt more at home with it cause of the East Coast feel (and merch at the back wall). Waitresses (although friendly) took a really long time to get to our table to take our order. It felt like no one was really in charge (and a bit disorganized) while waiting about 30-40 min for our food. Serving sizes were great. The fish and chips were more meaty than your average fish and chips which is also great and the batter was nice on it too. And food was nuclear hot when we got it (which is great). Pass on the coleslaw though (tasted super watery). Would've ordered dessert but because of the wait for the initial order and entree, couldn't wait any longer (we were there for over an hour). Have been to this restaurant 3 times now. Friendly service, homecooked food and lots of it. They even serve Pie for desert. This place is REALLY busy for supper most nights and lined up out the door on weekends. Make a great Clam Choder, soups are all homemade, home made fresh cut fires, liver and onions done just right and NOT breaded. Good selection of Gluten friendly dishes, including will do fish un-breaded and pan fried so no cross contamination. They also have a good selection of Newfie type foods and doodads for sale so you can stock up on stuff you can't easily find here. read more

Reading some of the other reviews, I wondered if I went to the right place. The haddock was as greasy as I have ever had. I thought I was at Joey's. I forked out the fish from the batter. My wife had veal cutlets that were "deep fried" and very overcooked. They were wafer thin and dried up. We advised the waitress about the cutlets and she agreed that they looked bad. She brought 2 new cutlets and they looked and tasted the same. Also, her vegetables were cold from the start. The couple beside us complained about their cold vegetables also. Being from Newfoundland, I was excited to hear of a place that might be able to deliver amazing "Newfie" style fish & chips. Sadly, we were very disappointed with our meal. We started with the calamari, while it tasted good the portion was very small for the $9 price. We both had the cod fish & chips. The fish was tasteless and the coleslaw was inedible. We mentioned the coleslaw to the waitress but we were not offered any kind of compensation. $17 for a 2-piece cod & chips and goes up from there for other types of fish. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because the pop is a pop can and a cup with ice, although that does allow them to serve both coke and Pepsi drinks. I am giving a 1 star rating for quality vs cost. We had the cod and chips with gravy. There was nothing spectacular about the meal. The fries were a little over done and the fish was average. I am so happy to finally have a place like The Atlantic Kitchen in St. Albert! First impression - PACKED! It was so busy that my mom and I had to park in a different parking lot altogether. We lucked out, however, as 2 tables were being cleared right as we walked in. We seated ourselves by the window (a bit chilly on a cold day - I had to put my jacket back on) and enjoyed the view as well as the privacy being in the corner allowed us to have. The decor is simple and quaint (love the blue lights) and fun east-coast music plays all the time. We started with mussels in white wine sauce. No side plates were offered with the appetizer, which made for a messy start. We definitely devoured them still and absolutely had to keep the white wine sauce with us to add to our entrees (the staff kept trying to clear it off our table, though.) Our entrees arrived fairly quickly after we finished the mussels. My mom's salmon was "okay" - nothing spectacular. She did, however, love her baked potato and vegetables. I ordered the clam strips (also just "okay" and needed way more seafood sauce on the side) and the mashed potatoes with veggies. Overall the meals were good, but the price tag is a bit high. The food is by no means fancy and seems easy to replicate at home, but in a way that homemade flair adds to the charm of The Atlantic Kitchen. read more

Good food and loved the Newfie store items. I was really hoping to find crab on the menu however. Excellent flavouring on veggies as I am not a fan, but I ate mine all up.
