Our favorite seafood place. We always visit this restauurant when we feel like eating seafoods.

The shrimp was the main part of the dish and it was so mushy not over cooked more like if you just left it in water all day and inside the shell there a weird mushy coating and the shrimp doesn't even have the texture of shrimp. I'm a big shrimp fan and this was awful. Broth flavour and potatoes were good but that's not what I paid that much money for. I used to get it here before and the quality was way better. They also used to have crab which was really good. read more

We went to dinner as a party of 4. The service was ok, the food however was not. For the 4 of us diner was $179 plus tax and tip. we ordered the Pirates medley. There was a great deal of food but the quality was sub standard. The shrimp, mussels and lobster were all cooked to the point of a mushy consistency. For the amount of money spent you're much better off going to the Keg for any of their sort and turf menu options than go to the Captains Boil. I was so excited to try this place but have been left throughly disappointed. Save your money. read more

My husband and I were looking for a fun date night and I've wanted to try this place for a while, so the timing finally worked out! When we arrived a very chipper host told us about a short waiting list and offered to take our cell number and call when a table was ready if we didn't want to sit and wait. Our table was ready in about 10 minutes. The table was set up with a table cloth of more or less cardboard paper towel, two sailor themed bibs and two pairs of gloves! We ordered the sangria to share and our waiter explained how the menu works and our options for ordering. We decided on shrimp, with the captains spice, and medium heat with the corn and upgraded for $3.50 okra. My hubby ordered the muscles with the garlic and again medium spice but with rice and upgraded for broccoli. Our food arrived with in 10-15 min and was piping hot! We put on our gloves and thoughoughly enjoyed the different dinning experience! The food itself had great flavour- mine especially with the captains spice and a medium choice had a nice level of heat!! It took a little while after we were done to get out bill but nothing too troublesome and we still had sangria to enjoy. Overal experience was a lot of fun and tasty food! definatly reccomend for a fun date night or dinner with friends- even for a group of you plan ahead as space is limited! read more

First time at this branch and had dinner with friends and our experienced was very good. The place was very busy so we waited 40 minutes to get seated. Staff are friendly and attentive. The food was very good and the sauce was perfect. Serving time is okay. The place doesn't have a hand washing area so you have to go all the way to washroom to wash your hands. read more

The only reason I'm leaving 2 stars is because most of my other experiences here were fine except yesterday. We me, my spouse and son sat down for dinner and unfortunately the service was not very good, once we ordered our seafood boils we both had shrimp and both were super over cooked. Waitress never came to see how our food was I had to wait ten minutes to track down another waitress and tell her it was super over cooked.she said okay we will get the kitchen to remake ur orders Second batch comes and it was also over cooked not enjoyable and once again no one came to ask if the second batch was better, not one of the waitresses checked to see if the food was corrected. We ended up paying and leaving frustrated, and even paying we were not asked if it was better.. we ended up just taking it to go as we could not be bothered at this point and dropped it off to the homeless. Unfortunately we will not be returning as we felt no one cared that our food was over cooked twice and left annoyed. read more

I had my sisters birthday catered here last year and tried to again. NEVER AGAIN! Not to be alberta country trash but ENGLISH obviously isn't their first language, it was very difficult to get the lady on the phone to understand my order. And when asked for a credit card for a deposit for an order exceeding 200$ (which I'll add I didn't have to do last time) I accidentally hung up when trying to locate my wallet. Average. I was excited to try this place but for the price the seafood was mediocre. It was a little too fast foodish atmosphere for the price you are paying. Our server was friendly and efficient. We decided on the the sailors feast. We went with one pound of clams and one pound of shrimp. I didn't think the shrimp was quality at all. I think if they used unshelled headless shrimp the marinade would taste way better. And why would I pay for a pond of shrimp when halfa pound you discard? Really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The clams were good. Really large portions. And I really enjoyed the lotus. Delicious. Seafood fried rice was decent and large but not a lot of flavour. I enjoyed the corn, it was fresh and sweet but the potatoes were bland. Shrimp basket was tasty. Basically hot and miss. If you want to eat a large quantity of seafood for a cheaper price, fine. Tried the Captains boil for the first time after some recommendations from friends. As a seafood lover, I was pretty stoked to find out that a place like this existed in Edmonton. When I arrived I quickly noticed how busy it was, luckily we got seated and were served pretty quickly. The menu was very different, there were steps that you had to follow to order your bag of cajun seafood boil. Basically each person at the table gets plastic gloves and a plastic bib - apparently this is all biodegradable plastic... Which I was glad, since I was a bit concerned with the amount of plastic waste this might generate. So you get a menu and you get to follow steps, you pick your catch - seafood protein, this can be crab legs, lobster mussels, shrimp and you get a pound of this stuff. You then select your flavour this can be cajun, lemon pepper, garlic or the signature captains boil (which might be a combination of the three). Then you select the heat of your boil, non spicy, mild, medium and spicy. You will then select the sides and any add ons. The sides were lotus root, broccoli, corn, okra, sausage and potatoes. Sides were your typical fried rice, fried and chicken tender etc. I ended going for the mussels, with the lotus root and the captain boil with mild sauce and fried shrimp and fries on the side. You can always split the sides too.... Cause this ended up being alot of food!! But it was quite delicious. The mussels were huge and the portions were quite alot. I quite enjoyed the experience. Next time I am back it'll be alot of sharing of the food. As this was alot to take on by yourself. I recommend this place to anyone who enjoys seafood and getting down and dirty with the seafood experience of eating with your hands. read more

Fantastic service and really great food. Somehow they can make it look better though as you get your food in a plastic bag. I felt like a garbage man rummaging through someone's garbage for food. Ahoy! Welcome to the captains boil, where it's a different experience compared to any other restaurant. The food came in bags with the choice of what type of seafood (or chicken) and a choice of 4 flavours. When I went the flavours we got were Cajun, garlic butter and captains boil (a combination of all 3 flavours). All were delicious (especially the Cajun, that was my all time favorite!). Although, I was hoping for the garlic butter to be more stronger in garlic. The service was great as they were quick with seating us and making sure we had beverages. Our server was kind and patient, making sure we had everything we needed and giving us enough time to decide what we want. The interior of the location is very nautical. I really enjoyed the colour scheme that was placed. Filled with natural wood colours and navy, super chic! Overall, this place is great. My mother and I walked into the resturant and it was completely empty. I thought this is not a good sign but could be good for us. We sat in a booth and were greeted by one of the best waiters I've had in my entire life. Super friendly, even let my mother and I have two single crawfish as I have never had one before. He showed me how to peel it and then we ended up ordering the snow crab....it was messy and delicious..the captain's boil sauce was so good and the crab was nice and fresh..they give you little scissors and you cut one pound of crab legs that you eat at your own pace..you eat a couple sides and the crab out of a bag...but mostly on the table over a sheet of brown paper...one of the best resturant experiences I have had in the city..a new experience at least for me that did not disappoint.. read more

Food was very good and the environment was very relaxed and enjoyable. The only issue there was is our server leaving without saying anything to us. The girls who helped us after were very nice and apologetic but told us that "they are very serious on cutting". I loved this experience! I came here with my Dad who is pretty old fashioned and wouldn't wear the bib. He also refused to put on the plastic gloves. The server picked up on his resistance and quickly brought him a plate and cutlery without us even asking. I loved how attentive they are here. The food is fantastic. We had the snow crab legs and the lotus root which were all brought to us hot and steaming in a plastic bag. You eat with your hands on the brown paper covered table. It's a kids dream. You do get really messy. That's part of the fun. We did get the mild spice, which was a bit more spicy than I was expecting so be aware of that. The scissors they provide are super easy to use and can get into everything. Way way way better than Red Lobster ever was. read more

No, you don't want to eat here. I love good seafood but that is not what you will not find here (Black Pearl on 104 st is much better). The food was barely passable: the "captain's boil" flavour at medium spice was muddled and musty-tasting; there was no complexity or depth in the flavour profile. The shrimp were not even sliced down the back, making them tricky to eat; they served them sliced (but we had to peel) in rural Jamaica on the side of a road, but not possible in a restaurant in Edmonton, apparently. Eight-dollars for three pieces of fast-food-quality garlic bread. There was no cutlery or dishes. Everything but the garlic bread and rice are served in plastic bags, which will leak and spill. The plastic gloves and paper napkins they provide will not save you. Six seafood lovers with varying palettes came, and we all left disappointed, unsatisfied, and unwilling to return. The best review came from my father-in-law who joked that we'd get our money's worth if we dined and dashed (we paid; we're not brutes). read more

The food is really good, the seafood was fresh (we got shrimp & snow crab in Captain's Boil sauce medium & mild heat) with corn. It's reasonably priced for seafood. Seafood is priced per pound & you must order by pound so if you go with others you can try a bit of everything. You can "up the spice" if you decide it's not spicy enough after you start eating. Scissors are provided for the crab and I managed to only cut myself once (oops)! The service was ok - the server said "Oh" and seemed disappointed we hadn't been there before so she had to explain how to order. We were asked if we wanted more water, we said no rush but she didn't come back - another server asked & brought us water about 30mins later. It was definitely busy when we got there and there was a wait by the time we left. It would be great if there were more then 2 washrooms but it's a small place so I can see how that may not have been feasible. Never have I ever...been to a place like this! I decided to take my boyfriend here for dinner on a whim. He loves seafood and I heard that it was finally open so why not check it out? It's easy to tell that this place gets busy so if you're going in a group, I recommend going early or better yet...go in twos. Because there were only two of us, we got in quickly. The tables are topped with brown paper and you are given gloves and a bib (so you know it's gonna be good) and you are equipped with scissors and seafood shell crackers. First you choose your main protein (lobster, snow crab, king crab, shrimp, crawfish, chicken etc.), then your flavour and your heat level, and then you have add ons at an additional cost (corn on the cob, potatoes, sausage etc.). They also have sides if you are so inclined (fries, calamari, garlic bread etc.). We decided on the snow crab legs (mild) and chicken pieces (medium) with an order of their Cajun fried rice. The meats come out in a steam bag so you basically just stick your hand in and grab what you want and away you go! The food is so tasty and served hot and it's such a fun experience. It's one of the only places that I know of where eating with your hands and getting messy is completely acceptable and expected. I highly recommend! It was our first time coming here and our waitress Shai (?) was amazing and explained the steps we take to order and was super patient with us. Everything comes in biodegradable plastic bags in full pounds, and you just choose what sauce and spice you want. We ordered the shrimp and crawfish and were a bit clueless as how to eat the crawfish since it was our first time. Our server demonstrated how to peel it correctly and even checked up on us to see if we got the hang of it. Our drinks were never let half empty, and the rest of the staff were all super friendly. Okay, first off, the captains boil sauce is addictive. The shrimp was awesome. The clams are awesome. The fried seafood rice is super addictive. The customer service was really awesome. This place is expensive but totally worth it and totally awesomely addictive. I crave their food a lot but have to wait until the right paycheque to go back. I love this really awesome restaurant and it's well worth a 45 min wait unless you are just too hungry to wait. It's just really awesome to go to a place like this in land locked Edmonton. Bravo!! I had no idea what I was in for when a mate of mine and I decided to come to this place. We saw that it was popular and that it was a mix of Creole and Asian seafood. We were fairly close and really hungry, so we just came by to check it out. What we saw when we came in intrigued us. The place was packed and people were sitting at tables filled with plastic bags and wearing disposable bibs and gloves. There wasn't much conversation to be had; people were concentrating on the job at hand, opening up their tasty food with a pair of seafood scissors. We nodded to each other, smiled and knew we were in for an interesting time. We've both had seafood in Asia, the American South, and both the East and West coast. We know seafood and both travel quite a bit, but neither of us have yet visited any Captain's Boil location before. This was going to be a new experience for both of us. Edmonton is not a hotbed of seafood, but a franchised restaurant is likely to have its quality control down. After a few minutes with menus, one of the servers came over to walk us through it and give us some helpful hints on portion sizes, how to order and pricing. As we were sharing, we came up with a meal to satisfy both of us. We ordered snow crab, crawfish, corn, okra, and the Cajun seafood fried rice (which comes with shrimp). Other seafood options were lobster, Dungeness crab, king crab legs, shrimp, clams, and mussels. For the timid seafood eater, they also offer chicken. Each meat type can be prepared with 4 different types of flavour and heat. For flavour, they offer cajun, lemon pepper and garlic sauces; or if you're feeling like that's not enough, they will mix them all together to make their signature Captain's Boil sauce. Heat is a simple; no spice, mild, medium, or fire. What they then do is to put it all in a bag and shake it up. If you ordered sides, like the corn and okra that we did, it can be thrown in the bag as well (along with extra sauce). The tables are covered with paper and your bag of food is delivered right on the table. Unless you ordered a dish with rice, the only utensil you are provided with are seafood scissors. This is where the fun begins. The steam rises excitedly from the bag and you dig into the bag selecting your favorite item. The scissors are needed for the lobster and crab and although not required do make getting at the crawfish and shrimp easier. Clams and mussels are served open so no tools are needed. We had ordered both of our meals with the Captain's Boil sauce and medium heat, so I cannot comment on the individual sauces. However the heat was fairly tame for us and we think that fire is the way to go. The Captain's Boil sauce was really good and the seafood was fresh and tasty. We both enjoyed the rice and the vegetables were likely much better for being in the bag. For me, the okra was perfect, my favorite part of the meal, and only $8. After the meal, the servers expertly and neatly pack up your left overs with no mess and they just fold the paper up for easy disposal. In seconds the mess is gone and a new table is set for the next group. I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The price is about $50 per person, so although not cheap, it's worth it for fresh seafood. I will have to come back here with some friends to really experience this place. The bulk og the menu is seafood boiled and served in a bag that you put a bib and gloves on and eat with your hands. As I was just eating a quick supper I did not go that route. It looked odd but I bet it tasted great. Anyway, what I did get was some fried shrimp and fries. The shrimp were the long straight kind. Quite tasty with a crispy coating. I got the Cajun fries and was happy to note they had a bit of spice to them. It came In a big bowl and I could only finish about 80%of them. Now we come to the greatest disappointment. Off at the bar I could see beer taps. So I asked what they had on tap. Well get this. They had nothing on tap. The taps were not hooked up to anything as they wanted to keep fish in the beer fridge. The bottle selection was uninspired so I just ordered a coke. read more

I am beyond happy that I was able to check this place out, it's certainly on yelp's "hot and new" and "the weekly round-up", for a reason. I went here this past Saturday evening around 9pm and we must have just missed the rush - it wasn't insanely full and most people had just finished their meals. We were greeted and then seated right away which was a pleasant surprise considering how much hype this place has been getting. This restaurant is family friendly: great for big groups and for dates - that is assuming you've been with your partner over a year.. trust me it gets really messy really fast! Not exactly a place you'd want to wear your new white dress, trust me! But regardless, the resturaunt is super clean and has beautiful art on the walls. Their bathrooms are wheelchair friendly (woohoo!) and there's a lot of parking outside. Dear manager, please give all your employees a raise - they're all so amazing. Shoutout to Andy who served us and made our night! Everyone there was so friendly and freakin hilarious. They make it such a relaxed environment and I wish I could've stayed longer just to talk with them more. The staff really seemed like they were having fun and it was incredibly refreshing to be able to joke around and feel completely comfortable in such a setting. You guys rock! SO as far as the food goes I have nothing negative to say! Like I said it gets super messy and I don't mean "oh no a little spot on my shirt he-he" .. I mean you better grab the oldest shirt you have and get ready to be covered in grease because stuffs about to go down. PROTIP THANKS TO ANDY: the seasonal catches are pretty pricey (which is expected) so if you're not looking to spend that much then go for something cheaper and share it like we did , it's definitely worth it. You get a lot of meat for what you're paying for and it's really fresh. I definitely recommend the snow crab - it's a bit more work to get to the meat but a little scissor work goes a long way. Yes I said scissors - don't worry, it's not too intimidating and by the end of the night you'll be a pro at de-shelling your crab. The rice is one of their popular sides and I loved it. We were able to finish a plate between the two of us but it could easily serve three or four people.. we just eat a lot. Another tip - use the sauce from your bag of catch and pour it over the rice. So. Damn. Good. I also recommend ordering the sausage - Infact I HIGHLHY recommend you do. You get so much meat and it's probably the best sausage I've had - and I've been to many barbecue places in my days. I really think this restaurant is a must try if you like your seafood. I was never quite sure what the "lipstick on a pig" experience was truly like until my friends and I came here for supper last night. Let me start off with the positives: -The service was excellent, from all staff. They were very attentive, keeping drinks constantly filled, and being available to explain menu items or demonstrate techniques at the drop of a hat. -My friend said her snow crab legs were good, if slightly overpriced. -The fried rice was actually decent, with a good amount of scallops and shrimp throughout. Spice level was mild, which I appreciated, as my friends don't have the spice tolerance I have. That being said, it could have used some additional veggies in it, instead of just corn, to help with texture and flavour, as it was all just one big spoonfull of chewy textures. Now, the harsh reality: -Their crayfish SUCK. The only reason two of us had come to the restaurant was because we were hoping for the authentic Louisiana crayfish boil experience. When I found out that they can't get them in fresh, it made way more sense why they were so bad, because these critters were muddy and bitter like none other. I get that you're trying to do something different, but if you can't do it right, stick to simplicity. -Their potato side dish is inexplicable. I get that you're sticking to a theme, and potatoes and corn are part of the usual boil, but for the love of god, could I please have a fork? Awkwardly holding half a boiled potato in my hand is a terrible look on a date, thanks. At the very least, why not cut them into smaller pieces that I could pop into my mouth while I'm struggling to shell your bad crayfish? -The Captain's Boil sauce is TERRIBLE. Oh my god it sucks so bad. You know all that great stuff about a good Cajun seasoning? Imagine taking that, watering it down, muddying the flavours with random additives, and then further diluting that so that your abortion of a sauce didn't even impart flavour into the seafood. You know how the best part of a good boil is sucking the heads for that spicy goodness? NOT AROUND HERE IT ISN'T. You just get muddy water. -Their chicken should be classified as hate speech. I've never seen someone mistreat an animal like that before in my life. They give you this warning when you order it about how "it's boiled, so the texture's a little different", but then it comes out, and it's this slimy, gelatinous, inedible mess. All 3 of us who tried a bite of it jerked our heads back in physical repulsion as our teeth sank into it. Listen, waitress, I have boiled chicken before, several times, and it doesn't cause the damn thing to denature into something akin to butter flavoured Jell-O. I don't know what in god's name your chefs are doing back there, but they deserve a trial at The Hague for crimes against humanity. TAKE THIS ABOMINATION OFF YOUR MENU. IT'S SO BAD. SO SO SO BAD. -$8 for mother-loving BROCCOLI in your boil. Let that sink in. -And should to manage to suffer through the meal and pray to God to at least cleanse your palate with a simple dessert, just so you don't feel like you've wasted your one night away from the kids this week, he looks down on you and laughs, for he has no power in this place, as Satan's masterful plan to torment you has finally been revealed when the server informs you that they don't bother with a dessert menu, preferring to let you suffer with the greasy remnants of your meal on your tongue for the rest of the evening, as a harsh reminder of the consequences of your actions. read more

Loved the flavours and the portions were quite large for the menu item we ordered that wasn't by weight. Ordered the fried shrimp and Cajun fries, 1lb shrimp and 1lb snow crabs in the captain boils sauce with medium heat. Just the right amount of spicyness and garlic flavour. Loved dipping our cajun fries in it. At first I noticed the Cajun fries were very under seasoned but I appreciated that once I started dipping them in our boil sauce. So the captains boil just opened this week! It's in quite a small location and I can see that changing soon. My review is based completely on the food. It was so good. We would skip the lobster in the future based on the price vs the satisfaction but the crab and corn were definitely worth it! The Cajun fries are definitely spicy and the fried shrimp is so good! It's a fun experiment. No plates. No cutlery. Gloves and a bib. We basically had a fist fight over the snow crab. Everyone working there is very very friendly but it is obvious that there was not enough training for any of the staff before it opened. We got all of our food but all the wrong flavouring and it was hard to get a refill or a menu when we first got there. Can't hate the hustle though! They are busy and the food is good. read more

I popped in after shopping and tried this place out. I came in starving and left very full, despite ordering the lowest carb meal possible. It turns out 1 lb of mussels equals 10 large mussels. The mussels, corn and broccoli were all very good. Service was excellent and a woman who might be the proprietor came to ask if it was my first time there and how I enjoyed the meal. All in all a very pleasant experience and definitely as messy as the server promised, ha ha. read more

Super friendly and helpful staff, and be prepared to get dirty as you're provided a bib, gloves and scissors to tackle the hot delicious bags of seafood that come out. You can choose the type of cooking broth, spice level and order seafood by the pound. We rounded out our seafood boil with corn, sausage (small amount of thinly sliced garlic sausage) and potato, seafood rice (a decent amount of shrimp and scallops in buttery rich rice) and crispy calamari. If you prefer not to have a mountain of seafood carnage on your table, you can ask for a bucket to toss it in.. almost everything is composted, so you can feel good getting messy and filling up on seafood! Only downside is this place is smaaaaaall, so they dont take reservations.. try to pop in during an odd time and you may luck out and get a table without waiting for hours. read more

Very disappointed of food. I went there on Wednesday 6pm, there is so crawfish, the restaurant close at 11pm. The flavour is disappoint at all, it's have coconut creamy inside of spicy, it's wired, not like Thai spicy, with coconut and sour, this only creamy. This restaurant not environment at all, each food wrap by two thick plastic bags, after every customer done, the waiter wrap all plastic stuff with paper, I don't know where they process these garbage, most of restaurant don't use straw, this make more pollution than straw. This is my first time and last time to this restaurant in Edmonton. read more
