Imagine taking a relaxing drive around the East Coast and happening upon a quiet, homey, family-oriented seafood restaurant with friendly staff, affordable prices, and comfortable surroundings. Joey's Seafood Restaurants do a great job of recreating that sort of atmosphere in your local strip mall in the Republic of Western Canada. All that's missing are the East Coast accents and the 13-15% HST. My wife and I have been to the Terra Losa Centre location a few times now and the service is always personable and fast. We like to go in the late afternoon/early evening timeframe between the lunch and supper crowd (yes, it's 'supper'--not 'dinner'--we're in the Maritimes, remember?). It's usually quieter and more laidback during this time. The only other people in the place are usually just seniors having a light meal and watching TV. By the time we're ready to leave there's usually a crowd at the front door ready to swarm the place and "Consume mass quantities!" (Coneheads reference). And just so you know, it's not all seafood they serve. I got the Chicken & Ribs for $21. It is a grilled chicken breast with Teriyaki and a half rack of barbecue ribs. All chicken and rib meals (they come in several combinations) as well as the Ocean Fare come with your choice of two sides. I got fries and veggies. The other sides to choose from are coleslaw, Caesar Salad, spring mix salad, rice, and garlic red skin mashed potatoes. Just remember to ask for a table away from the window. For one thing, seeing all the strip mall traffic spoils the mood of the "quiet roadside Mom and Pop eatery in Atlantic Canada" fantasy and when the "Consumers of Mass Quantities" (Coneheads again) show up to wait for a table they have tendency to stare at you through the glass.

These guys are NOT on the menu.

Atlas Steak + Fish

This was my first visit to this Atlas Steak + fish location, but I've to the location in Kamloops…read morebefore, and that was a good experience. This visit was not. It was Mother's Day, but we had a reservation for an early dinner. We arrived on time, but despite having a reservation, we still had to 5-10 min for a table to be cleared and ready. From what I could tell, the restaurant was only half full, but not fully staffed. Much like the location in Kamloops, this look like a high-end steakhouse. The kids were impressed with mist covered entrance. Once seated we got our menus. It took a while for our server to come by, but as mentioned, they looked understaffed. The first thing she asked is if we want sparkling or still water. We chose still, only realizing later it was Evian water, not tap water. This was a common practice in fine dining restaurants decades ago, but I think the industry realized that it made feel customers cheated and so I haven't seen this for awhile. I feel it's the roughly the equivalent of being asked to tip for everything now - customers are feeling bad being forced to say no, and feels like a poor business practice. After taking our orders, we were served the complimentary bread. It looked good, but the moment I started to tear it apart, I could immediately tell it was not fresh. The outside was a hard dried-out shell, and the inside was barely warm - like it was sitting under a hot lamp for too long. The kids at the table also mentioned that it's not as good as they remember. We mentioned it to the server, and she thanked us for the feedback. I tried the following: - Prime Rib - Mixed review. The prime rib itself was good. I asked for medium rare, and that's exactly what I got. But It wasn't freshly carved, so it was luke-warm at best. Yorkshire pudding was hard and cold. The potato and kale/spinach pure were fine. The red wine jus had completely congealed. I forgot what it was, so when the plate was placed in front of me, it look like BBQ sauce, and not red wine jus. - New York Striploin - Not good. We asked for medium rare. It was clearly medium - and ended up dried out. I informed the server, and she was willing to replace, but I also encourage my family not to waste food, so we kept it, even if not at it's best. - Truffle & Parmesan Fries - Good. Very large portion size, so couldn't finish it. Service was spotty. Server was nice enough, but just didn't really have the tools or energy to help us with our problems. When we complained about the striploin, she did offer free dessert, but it was a big steak, and we were too full to take it. So what does that mean? I had to pay for still water, cold bread, cold prime rib, overcooked sirloin - at full price. I admit that the overcooked sirloin could have been fixed with a replacement and/or free dessert, but I don't think it would've made up for the entire visit. A place like Atlas aims to provide an ultimate dining experience, and once a mistake is made, it's an uphill battle to recover, and it certainly didn't here. I would have doubts coming back to this location, and possibly other locations too.

How have I not reviewed my favorite restaurant in edmonton? I have had everything on the menu here and everything is delicious. I have been recently eating here alot I the new year as I've been extremely lucky at starlight casino! Anyways, may fave items are the cocktail shrimp, the seafood salad, Tomahawk porkchop, the truffled Mac and cheese and of course the highly addictive baked Alaska. It is a mouthful but those are the best dishes here. Trust me. I've had everything 10 times over and have tried EVERYTHING! I love the ambience here. The live pianists on thursdays and weekends. Or the waiters giving you a show if you order the salads, Tomahawk steak or baked Alaska! The service is phenomenal and I've recently fell in love with the delicious happy hour here! A must while in edmonton!!!!

The Stony Plain location was no different, other than a single bobble that could have been easily avoided. The service is typically excellent, and this evening was no different. The staff is well trained and have a checklist of things to cover while you dine there. It's almost a little too formulaic, with not a great deal of personality occasionally. The decor is a little bit upscale, but not pretentious at all. The drinks are well prepared, although I will say my martini glass was amongst the smallest I've ever been served. Our entrees were good, K's steak spot on, my halibut was well cooked, but the cauliflower rice seemed a bit strange. The cod dish also looked very good although the piece of cod seemed a little on the small side for close to 40 bucks. We also ordered a wedge salad to share between K and I but it was dropped less than a minute prior to our entrees so it sat untouched. The only misplay of the visit, but it was recognized immediately. The Asst Manager was Johnson the spot, came over right away, apologized and said they would take it off the bill which they did. Other than that, everything was great, and we will be back the next time we are in Oil country!

The selection is smaller than you might find in a city, but they make up for it in originality and variety. How about three kinds of noodles? And Italian meatballs, prawns, chop suey, deep fried scallops and tempura fried fish. Those last two really impressed me, because they were both fried just enough to allow their delicate flavors and textures shine through. Someone paid attention. On their salad bar, you'll find a different variety of vegetable and fruit salads, alongside simple but excellent fruit slices like papaya, mango, and lychee fruit. Again, someone paid attention to the details, instead of just hacking up some tossed salad and a bunch of melon. I LOVED that they had sushi! It was simple stuff, mostly cucumber, avocado and shrimp, but it was beautiful and tasty--not going to complain! Desserts were simple, but there's something for everyone. Two kinds of cake, chocolate and lemon--I had one of each, plus the lovely custard. What I thought was really cool was the wide variety of ice cream they had available. They had the standard vanilla, but also mint chip, oreo and more. Service was superb. They are quick and soooo nice there. Excellent! I'm pleased with the whole experience. I'll definitely come back when I'm in Westlock.
