The Cafe has been renamed "221" and is located on Broad Street in Bethlehem. The BYOB offers upscale Thai food that was surprisingly delicious. Don't pass up the Spicy Shrimp Soup. The wonderfully melded blend of flavors along with the freshness of the shrimp made this a must for starters. Our main dishes were all prepared with the freshest of ingredients and vegetables cooked to perfect tenderness. The quiet ambience and attentive service rounded out a delightful evening. What a sweet gem this place is! The interior is quaint and homey, offering warmth as soon as you come in. Now, let's get to the really good part: the food. Came here with my mom, as part of our tradition to check out restaurants she's not tried in Bethlehem (I grew up here, she still lives here and I am now in Philly). We each began with one of their Thai coconut soups: me, the 3 mushroom and her the chicken-coconut. This was so heavenly and light and scrumptious. The mushrooms were unusual and not typical of any I've tried. They had great texture and blended beautifully with the lemongrass and other traditional Thai aromatics. Mom got shrimp/crabmeat fried rice and absolutely loved it. I got the vegetarian Thai-Basil pad Thai and it was cooked to perfection! Amazing, relaxing ambiance, intimate beautiful and unique dining spaces. Food is off-the-charts outstanding. Folks are friendly, warm and accommodating. I had the fresh spinach salad with the peanut dressing... Oh my goodness! Perfect in every way, portion, presentation, taste and even the lingering after taste sensations. We had the fresh Scottish Salmon.... I NEVER had salmon that was this exceptional... again, beautiful presentation, more than adequate portions, heavenly sensations had my taste buds doing the happy dance with each mouthful. Veggies were done exactly the way I love them, oh my. Then, for dessert, I have never had anything like their chocolate peanut butter pie. They had a fancy name for it but, ohhhhh my goodness! It is different to explain, but when I ate it, it was a wonderful explosion of gentle flavor, not overwhelming, perfect is all that comes to mind and... it was like I was eating flavored air because it was so light but the taste was amazing. We have always had a memorable positive experience over the years we have been there. We even had our son's wedding rehearsal dinner there and had many complements, even repeated years later. This place is popular among the ladies-who-lunch set but there's plenty of room for the rest of us! The Cafe is a lovely setting for a special dinner or a business lunch, or when you just want to treat yourself to well-prepared, fresh food. The chef is Thai and cooks with a French flair. I first tried Thai red curry here. I've eaten it in other places and cities (except Bangkok) and this is the best. Any bad day can be turned around with a plate of red chicken curry at The Cafe. Save room for dessert baked in the kitchen! The hazelnut cakes are little flower-shaped bites of heaven. For a working girl, lunch can be a little pricier than I'd usually spend (about $15 including curry, non-alcoholic beverage, hazelnut cake, tip) but it's worth it! read more

We don't live in the Lehigh Valley, but we have some things to do there several times each year (like buying beer at Shangy's). Last time we were there, I had planned to eat in the area, and I had used THIS website to find an apropriate (vegetarian!!) restaurant that would meet my needs. I chose between 3 places, and after ruling out a downtown restaurant (for the crowd in front of it that scared us rural people!), we decided to give our business to THE CAFE. It was the right choice, and we will be back next time! Haha, we were not at all dressed up for the occasion. It was a stressfull Saturday in April , we had been on the road all day, and after loading up german beer at Shangy's, we were happy, tired and hungry. When we entered, I immediately saw that everyone had dressed up, and the very polite personel was kindly looking beyond our ...uhm... sweaty underdressed appearances. They must have thought we were in the wrong place, but we were just right. We do appreciate good cuisine, we just don't care about fashion. I had a severe ear infection that week and was practically deaf. The poor waitress had to repeat everything, and she must have thought I was an idiot. But she was really nice and absolutely professional. The food was outstanding, fresh and delicious. I actually was reminded of Martin's Restaurant in Hazleton. Same kind of etablissement, very good fresh food, vegetarian options, homemade desserts, and: you can bring your own bottle! The prices are on the same level as well. But you know what: we rather pay 50 $ for a great dinner for 2 people, than 20 $ for a bad one. We only eat out like 3-4 times a year, and so I want it to be really good. The cafe is absolutely standing up to my requirements. Fantastic interieur (old victorian, as somebody had described it before), great food, excellent service, appropriate (not cheap!) prices. I will absolutely come back next time we are in that valley! Last time we did not know we could have brought a bottle from home, and of course we did NOT want to open a case of our new beers which were in the trunk outside. This Thai place has a very homely setting. Great for a visit with the family or a date too. Price wise it is a little high but you will feel it was money well spent. As for the food , it was amazing. I had the Penang crispy duck. The spicy curry sauce with the dark duck meat was a perfect match. As for the dessert, I had the triple butter cake, was pretty good. Good selection of desserts to choose from and they are made on site too. Definitely going back. Love this place.. Have been there once for a group event and so glad i finally got a chance to get back there...Best thai food in the valley.. We shared spring rolls - were yummy.. and for dinner we got green curry with chicken and basil spicy pad thai w shrimp - it was delicious.. So authentic and not drowned in sauce. Im looking forward to getting back there and trying other dishes. How did I only find out about The Cafe after I moved away from the area??? I came here with a part of 8-10 for dinner and we were put in a private room upstairs. It was a bit ago, so I don't remember exactly what I ordered, but I know it was curry and delicious. I also remember the service being great; the perfect combination of attentive but not around too much. The decor is an old Victorian home which I loved. I came back another time for lunch after my first experience and was again happy with the decision to dine at The Cafe. The food was great again but the service was SLOOOOW. They put us upstairs with no ambient music so it was a big awkward when other tables joined us up there. I got the pad thai, and a mushroom coconut soup. Yum! Everyone enjoyed their meals including my friend who prefers American food. She got baked chicken and said it was yummy. They carry a French influence as well. Unlike the other reviewers, the decor just doesn't do it for me. You can do quaint and Victorian without flowers everywhere. This is a very interesting place to eat. The restaurant is based out of an old Victorian (?) house and the dining rooms have been made from the rooms in the house. Each of the rooms has a slightly different decor and color scheme. It creates a very interesting dining experience, one that I think I've only experienced in a few places in the Lehigh Valley (or anywhere else for that matter). It's what I imagine a tea house dining experience to be. The food consists of a lot of asian-influenced dishes; you'll find salads on the menu, but you'll also find pad thai and other asian-y foods. For dessert, there are many cakes available; I believe their signature dessert is their strawberry cream cheese pie, which is delicious. The pricing on the dishes is more than reasonable, at least for lunch (I've only eaten lunch there). My recollection is that most (all?) entrees are under $10, and the desserts are roughly $5. The Cafe is an American/Thai restaurant. It is in an old house and the atmosphere is so cute, private, and quiet. It has a family feel to it, so don't hesitate to bring your kids. Their food is very good! I love the Basil Pad Thai. Staff is very friendly and service is great. Recently enjoyed a dinner at the Cafe's front patio on a crisp fall evening. The setting was fantastic, the service was spot on, and the food was some of the best that I have had in a while. Overall, the Cafe remains one of the better Thai / American restaurants in the Lehigh Valley. The effort, care, and quality that goes into the food is almost unmatched at other establishments in the Valley. Where the Cafe lacks is hip decor and general accompaniments that do not enhance the quality of food and or my personal dining experience. Get the red Thai curry with anything...duck, chicken, rack of lamb. Whatever it is you won't be disappointed. Everything on the menu is delicious to be honest. This place is adorable and the food is incredible. They have a chef who prepares everything fresh and they make their own pastries and cakes in house. The strawberry cream cheese dessert is the best thing you'll ever eat. Make a reservation because it is a dining experience that takes time and they like to be prepared for their guests. We live right up the street from The Cafe and had always been meaning to stop in. Now I'm kicking myself for not going sooner! I've been in Bethlehem for about 9 months now and this is the first restaurant to serve high quality food off of an upscale menu. Atmosphere: After calling to change our reservation time to thirty minutes earlier just an hour before hand, we were promptly seated in one of the many small dining rooms. Our table was small for our party of four, but our serve did an efficient job of keeping unnecessary items and dishes out of our way. The designers of the restaurant kept the original set up of the house that it is inside so it can be very interesting to look at. The decor is not modern, trendy, or posh, but rather reminiscent of the home that it once was. Honestly, I didn't look too closely because I was too side tracked by the menu! Food: My whole party was very pleased with the food. The menu was a bit more scattered than I had expected, Asian base with strong French and American influences among others. This did not turn me off though, not a bit. It was rather fun looking through all of the different options and guessing which one would be the best. We ordered four different appetizers and passed them around. The pork spring rolls were definitely my favorite. The calamari and the crab and shrimp were served unexpectedly with lettuce on a plate. Regardless of the plating style, both were delicious. Lastly there were chicken skewers which were exactly what they sound like, cooked nicely with delicious dipping sauce. Our salads came next and while they were nothing extraordinary, the dressings were nice and the ingredients were fresh. Our entrees were fantastic. I tried the special, a flounder stuffed with crab and shrimp, baked with asparagus, served with veggies, potatoes and hollandaise sauce. Honestly, I didn't even get to the veggies and potatoes. I went right to the flounder, ate up every last bit of the light and flaky delicious goodness until I was stuffed. We didn't order dessert but complimentary cookies were brought out which were also delicious- we had to try! Service: This was a relaxing meal which I appreciate. Definitely not like busy chain restaurants where one course is brought out after another in an effort to get the tables turning as quickly as possible. I didn't check my watch at all, but I would bet that our entire meal took about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Our server was GREAT. She was polite, friendly, and while talking to us made sure to respectfully look everyone in the eye as she clearly talked through their specials without rushing. Did I leave anything out? I want to say that it was a bit pricey, but definitely not outrageous and MOST definitely worth it in my book. Give it a try! If you're hesitant than I want to say that they're open for lunch. Great fusion restaurant! We visited The Cafe for the first time this past week for lunch and were very impressed! We had no idea this great little place even existed! I ordered the chicken coconut soup, which was yummy, but a little thin. Probably would've been much better if it was creamy. I had the soup and chicken satay appetizer as my meal and I was very pleased! They brought out delicious little hazelnut tartes after our meal! Delicious! This was our first visit. It's a lovely old house and the service is great. The food is very good with some exceptions. The seafood salad was unlike any I've ever had. It had about five or six small shrimp in it. That was it. The rest was greens. The greens were very fresh and tasty but they had a lot of nerve calling that a seafood salad. My wife was also unimpressed. She had a salad with dried out avocado and goat cheese that was so dried out it was crusty. After that she had a so-so steak. I had a chicken curry. Same comments as above but there was a little more chicken - not much but some. the curry sauce was very good. They also have a decent and reasonably priced wine list. We have been coming here for years now and it is one place the family can unanimously decide on. We always get our own private room (because our party is never smaller than 6) and it is comforting to see familiar faces of the staff every time. Love The Cafe! My daughter and I had dinner reservations at 7:00 on a Saturday evening. We debated on what to eat and then decided what wine to have with our meal. She had the Coconut Milk soup and I had the Shrimp soup. One thing, be prepared to relax and enjoy conversations...it took about 45 minutes before our soups came out. Our wine was good (not that I would buy it at the wine store- but it was good with our meals). Delicious soups!!! Our meal was the Spicy Thai Basil with Salmon, and the Crispy Duck in Panang Curry. Great atmosphere, individual rooms each with 4 or 5 tables - so it makes for a more intimate setting for a nice dinner. It's been refered to as Thai - it isn't. It is typical American cuisine - with a Thai flare. You can get a rack of lamb or a rack of lamb in a massaman curry (my favorite dish). No substitute for a Thai meal, but a nice spin on the usual meat, veggie, starch trifecta. I was disappointed with the Thai soups, but have thoroughly enjoyed everything else I've ever had there. Expect to take your time here - it's not a place to come if you're looking for a quick meal.
