WOW....Amazing food and service!! My 1st time in for dinner and most definately not my last. From the moment I walked through the door of Bkack Cypress I was impressed. Intimate ambiance with low lighting, brick walls, linen napkins and impressive bar beckoning you to come in and stay awhile. I sat at the bar and was immediately greeted with my own carafe of water with a genuine smile from Hollis (bartender extraordinaire). Hollis presented the dinner menu and answered my questions with ease. Having worked in the "industry" for 35 yrs I have a particular palate for fine wine, craft cocktails and prime carnivorous meats. The New Zealand Lamb is outstanding!! Mind Blowing Outstanding!! The service is flawless without pretension. The wine list has something for everyone, as well as, rare vintage award winning vineyards. Sitting at the bar gives you a Birdseye view of staff coming and going to the well picking up their cocktail orders. Each and everyone of the staff is professional, courteous and friendly. My sister and I were passing through Pullman and did not expect to be able to eat at Black Cypress on a Saturday night at 6:30 without a reservation. We took a gamble and drove to the restaurant and, surprisingly, they were able to fit us in with no wait at a cozy small table. We started out with their tiny half size gimlet martinis, and they were delicious! We very much enjoyed the halloumi cheese sandwich appetizer. Absolutely delicious! I had their portobello mushroom entrée with truffled mashed potatoes and rapini, and my sister had their beet salad as an entrée. Both were delicious and perfectly prepared. We know they have been nominated for a James Beard award for Service/Hospitality and we feel it is highly deserved! Our server and the host were incredibly friendly, and somehow, although we had multiple servers bringing us dishes, they always got it to the right person and knew exactly where we were in the dining process. We had an excellent bread pudding with huckleberry ice cream for dessert. Overall, it was a perfect meal with stellar service! If you are anywhere near Pullman, I would highly recommend seeking this restaurant out, and do not be deterred by not having a reservation as they might be able to fit you in! read more

I loved everything about this place. The people were lovely, the drinks were good, and the food was excellent. I had the daily bread, which was fun, and the pork skewers. The beet salad is amazing. The beets and the radish pairs really well, and the cheese gives it kind of an anchor? Not sure how to describe it. But it's like fresh with savory and I love it. And the lamb is a miracle. It's my new religion. But the topper was the dessert. Not sure what it's called, but it's candied Clementines over panacotta and it tastes like a creamsicle. I've included a picture. This has been on my list of places to try for the last 3 years. I come into town only once a year and normally I am fully supplied with all the food I can eat. Most people would be ecstatic with this kind of set up. They go out of town for business and don't have to spend money on food. And normally I would be too. But you see, the Pullman/Moscow area seems to be in the twilight zone for restaurants. And by that I mean, they have a much higher concentration of great to excellent restaurants for such a small town. And Black Cypress seems to be the best example of that. I convinced a few coworkers to go with me and sit at the bar while we killed time before another event later in the evening. We got there before the busiest part of the evening, hoping that maybe they had a happy hour to shave a few pennies off the evening. No dice, but that's not surprising from restaurants that are in high demand and filled more often than not. The interior was dominated by light woods and and the eastern Washington sunshine pouring in through the large picture windows facing the street. The bar stools were tightly snugged together and the bar probably would seat 8 comfortably but you could probably squeeze 10 in without too much fuss. Not quite what you would find in a big city like San Francisco but that works out well. The restaurant that tries to be something from somewhere else, usually has to eventually move to that somewhere else. Eric was our bartender. He was patient, when I first go into a restaurant or bar, I can be full of questions and he handled the situation well. He let us take an extremely long time looking through the menu. He seemed to welcome the age old "make me something" request, but I did take care to give him a broad base to work from. His first cocktail did not disappoint. It ended up being a menu item, and very good. A nice unique flavor and very spirit forward. My next drink I asked if he could do something with a Mezcal. He grabbed a few bottles from the bar soon I had something named the Ready Aim Fire. It wasn't on the current menu but I got the impression that it had been in the past. He was quick to give credit to the bartender who made it. Normally I don't like mezcal, but, I find it enjoyable to challenge my palate while experiencing a new place. This was a great decision because this was probably one of the best drinks I've ever had. The spicy and smokey and slightly sweet was a perfect second drink. Eventually we decided to stay and have our dinner here and I had one final drink with dinner. I asked him to make me a drink with the Zucca Rhubarbo. I think he had something in mind when he made this too, because it actually was a super unique drink as well. And you probably wont believe this but, the drink tasted like a Big Mac. Now don't get me wrong, it was still a really good cocktail, but it had "notes of" the famous burger, in a good way. For food, the three of us got the same exact dish for dinner. The carbonera pasta. Not to spendy and not too heavy. Just perfect after a number of appetizers. We were able to sample the pork skewers, house dips with bread, the cheese plate and the olives over the course of the meal. Every detail of the meal at the bar was above our expectations. Excellent, friendly service, with one of the best meals we've ever had. We're vegetarian, and wanted to celebrate our anniversary with something other than the usual portobello. They provided an amazing special, with beet and lentil salad, asparagus, roasted artichoke heart, roasted zucchini with tsatziki, and rice pilaf. They deserve the Beard award for creative, seasonal cuisine. Whereas their specials usually have meat, I'd say it's worth asking them to put a few sides together, and I wish we had done so sooner. Very cool atmosphere. Menu wasn't super extensive as far as food but a nice offering. Drink/wine menu was substantial. Service was great! Seated right away and wait staff was very attentive. Appetizers and salad were great. For the entree two in my party(including me) ordered the ribeye steak and the other ordered the pork chop and my child requested a plain spaghetti which they kindly accommodated. All was great the only thing I would say is the steak I was served and the grilled broccolini along with it had a strong grill flavor almost propane(ish). Steak doneness was great. The brownie for dessert my child ordered was wonderful...she was very pleased! We will be back! read more

Well I never leave negative reviews but I must say I was very disappointed tonight. I asked for a seat at the bar and there were plenty of seats. The nice lady at the front said they were not seating people because of a plumbing issue. Plenty of food was coming out and they continued to set tables. I found this very confusing when I asked if I could order food to go. She said no and come again. Why were they setting tables and why was there food coming out? I'm pretty sure it was the hat. Had dinner there 2 consecutive nights while over for a football game. The Ceasar salad was by far the best I've ever had and I'm fanatic for good Ceasar salads. I've had them in many places including fine dining spots in Mexico and it wasn't as good as Black Cypress. We both had Ribeye steak and it was tasty, large and cooked perfectly. The only thing I was a little disappointed in was that they served dinner rolls with the entree instead of a nice, crusty bread. That certainly didn't overshadow a great experience. Great cocktails and very reasonably priced wine. The ambiance is fantastic and the service was exceptional. It's clear that the young hostess, servers and wait staff have been trained exceptionally well. They were very attentive, personable and helpful with food and drink suggestions. Like a lone seedling of good-to-near-great food along Main Street in Pullman swaddled in 5-star Yelp reviews and likeable Instagram photo mojo, the Black Cypress stands atop a foodie pedestal on the Palouse. This is "the" restaurant if this is "the" place. I was lucky enough to enjoy two meals in two weeks. The first was fabulous. The second was good. I'm now a Black Cypress fan. All meals at The Black Cypress should begin with the Black Cypress Daily Bread Basket with grilled Panhandle Artisan Bakery (Moscow, ID) bread and Seasonal Bruschetta. Sure, it's just bread, but you like bread, remember? A co-worker and a friendly server recommended the Roasted Chicken ($22) with Bread Salad, Seasonal Greens, and a Herb Pan Jus. To say I was skeptical about "gettin' chicken" as a winner when the menu features Lamb Chops, Ribeye Steak, and more would be a complete understatement. Luckily, I didn't trust my instinct and did trust the server's sincere smile. She was right. The Roasted Chicken was a tender flavor victor worthy of boasting about and should be renamed to Boasted Chicken. If I hadn't come back a week later and trusted my adventuresome Yelp instincts by ordering the Daily Skewer special, The Black Cypress would surely of been 5 stars. Unfortunately, the daily kabob was over-spiced, super-fatty cuts of Beef that had me leaving half on the plate. Bummer. For both meals, dessert was shared and the stars were a pair of sweet pairs featuring Ice Cream. Number one on my list (and yours) has to be the Bread Pudding & local-favorite Huckleberry Ice Cream. A close second was a soft Brownie with Marshmallow & Ice Cream. Can't decide? Get both and share ... or not. The couple of times I have been there, the entirety of the experience has been pretty good. Food is probably the most "gourmet" in the area, but it's not like they are trying too hard - it's well-done. Ambiance is nice, the interior an interesting mix of things thrown together. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and heard from someone in Lewiston where my husband works that this is a great place to go for really good food. I liked the fact that you can make reservations online very easily. We didn't realize that it's difficult to find parking as we had never been there. So parked around the block and hurried to make our reservation time. We were told we only had a few minutes to wait. We were seated in 30 minutes. The hostess offered us some water while we waited. There were menus available and a list of the days specials on a board on the wall so we could make our food choices before we were seated. These specials were not discounted items, just things they wanted to make you aware of, some were on the menu and some were not. The staff was concerned that we had to wait after making reservations, so we received an extra appetizer, which was nice. We were seated by a window which I like. But all of our chairs were wobbly, very wobbly. My husband was ok with it. Our waiter asked us if we had any food allergies which was thoughtful. We ordered an appetizer, a Thai beef skewer, which was extremely small. There were 6 little beef bites and some delicious sauce and a garnish type of greens. The complimentary appetizer was Saganaki. It was good, but again very small portions. An appetizer is sized for two people but prices for 4. They offered us some complimentary rolls which were very good, but they were dinner rolls and I felt they would be better off included with my entree. My husband and I ordered the ribeye steak. I was really disappointed in the quality of the meat. No marbling and therefore, not much flavor. Did I mention disappointed? The steak was cooked as we had asked, medium rare. The asparagus was delicious, but the potatoes were bland. My daughter ordered the Brazilian Stew which had seafood in it. She said it was very good. We don't drink alcohol so we can't judge that, but they have a wide array of non alcoholic drinks which is nice. They did not have salt and pepper on the table which usually means they think their food is so flavorful, salt is not needed. That was not the case and we asked for salt. I mentioned it was my husbands birthday, so they brought us a complimentary dessert. My husband chose the brownie which was lovely with smooth chocolate ice cream and toasted marshmallow on top with a great chocolate sauce. Yummy. But the rest of us were not asked if we wanted a dessert. Our waiter was interesting. Not personable or friendly, but attentive which was good. The person who came to replenish our silverware for the main course was very pleasant. Summary: The service was very good even though we had to wait for a table. The food was just ok overall. The decor was interesting and had a nice feel. It was extremely noisy. We had to wait longer than usual for all of our food. I was recovering from knee replacement surgery and had to stand up several times to alleviate discomfort. All in all, I gave it 4 stars because they seemed to be attempting to make it a pleasant experience for us. But the food overall was not worth driving from Clarkston to experience and we won't be back. read more

If I was grading on a scale that just included the Palouse area, it'd be a 5. If I'm taking into account all the places I've been, it's a 3. Why it stands out in the area: nice setting (far from the usual college joint, it actually has some atmosphere), nicer food. Why it doesn't have more stars: In terms of what I'm paying, I'd expect more in either quantity or presentation. Example: I ordered scallops here. I got 2 scallops on the small side with barely anything else. At places in Seattle and Portland, I'll get better scallops that will come with a nice side of potatoes and vegetables. Sure, I guess it's nice to just have the option of scallops in a hole like Pullman. But the price is off putting for what I receive. Often times when I dine at a high end restaurant, the portions are smaller and I walk away feeling like I ate just the right amount. At Black Cypress I just walk away hungry still. read more

WOW. I mean really. And in Pullman, WA? Cougar country? This was very, very unexpected. This restaurant would do well in anywhere, really well. The food is terrific. Just dynamite. My boyfriend and I went here for a late Valentines dinner and we were both floored by this place. They do a fabulous job putting unexpected flavors together and without going overboard. The menu is so well put together. The pork salad special that we tried was incredible, just the right amount of salt and citrus. The dips were amazing- light and flavorful tzatziki sauce and their spicy roasted garlic spread was killer! The lamb was at a perfect medium and the grilled romaine and garbanzo side was delicious. The scallops we had were so good I could not stop talking about them. I'm still drooling over the slaw that they had garnished them with. Their drink selection is great, mixing the classics (which are all prepared perfectly) with the trends in drinks. The Manhattan was divine and the two specialty cocktails we shared were playful and savory and went very, very well with the food. One of the best meals I've had in a long time. The Cypriot Sandwiches were the star - I could eat those things all day long. The flavors and textures were perfectly balanced. I think my mint salad had some dill mixed in (happy about that!) and I'm pretty sure the server said the spread was apricot (a departure from the date spread, as the menu notes). My half beet salad was tinier than I was hoping for, but again, the flavor made up for it. The Caipirinha cocktail made me want to go to Brazil. Not too sweet, but not too alcohol-heavy. Nice splash of lime. Finished everything off with a vanilla bean panna cotta with apricot purée and mint. You'll always win me over with panna cotta. Service was attentive and caring. Needless to say, I was texting photos of my food to friends and family, telling them they MUST stop in next time they are in Pullman. read more

Best meal in Pullman for me this moms weekend! Went late on Thursday night about a 1/2 hour before closing. They welcomed us and gave awesome service. I had the fish special which was a Brazilian dish with shrimp clams a white fish (can't remember which one) rice with toasted coconut on top. It was SO food. I had the house salad as well and it was delicious the lardons were a nice surprise for me. My daughter had the entree chicken Cesar salad. It was fresh crispy and perfect fro dinner. Her words.
