I'm so happy I finally got to dine here! We tried to visit on the weekend, but the restaurant was very busy. Luckily, we stopped in for lunch and found a table with no wait. I enjoyed the restaurant's rustic atmosphere and the friendly staff. The menu had a wide selection, and we ordered and loved: 'Mile high Ruben' and 'Birch classic club tomato with tomato basil soup.' I came to Pullman because my dog was having surgery and needed to find a restaurant nearby that could safely accommodate celiac disease for lunch. I called ahead and was specifically told that the restaurant has a gluten-free menu and that all staff are trained in celiac-safe protocols. I ordered a burger with a GF bun and a side Caesar salad, which I understood from the GF menu to be included with my meal. Another member of my party, who also has celiac disease, ordered the soup and salad combo. Our server was made aware of both of our dietary restrictions. Unfortunately, when our food arrived, both salads had croutons on them, making them unsafe for us to eat. The bigger issue was that our server never returned to the table after bringing our food. We were seated on the patio and were the only customers out there the entire time, so we expected she would check back fairly quickly. She never did, which meant we had no opportunity to point out the problem until we had finished the rest of our meals. When she finally returned to clear our plates, she said, "It looks like everything was good!", which was particularly strange given that there were two entire salads still sitting there untouched. I explained that the salads had croutons, and after what seemed like a surprised reaction, she offered to have new ones made. The other member of my party declined because we had already finished the rest of our food and needed to get back to our dog. When she brought my replacement salad to-go with the check, she told us that the manager had decided not to charge us for the salads. The salads were apparently only $1.50 each. I had understood my salad to be included with my meal, and the other salad was part of a soup-and-salad combo, so taking $1.50 off each felt like a very poor attempt at service recovery given the circumstances. I know accidents can happen, and I understand that mistakes are sometimes made. But when a restaurant specifically tells someone with celiac disease that they have trained staff and celiac-safe protocols, finding croutons on both salads is especially concerning. I sat there the whole time wondering if maybe they had GF croutons and debating if I should just eat it. Anyone with celiac knows how exhausting it is to constantly have to double-check food even after being assured that a restaurant can safely accommodate you. What really soured this experience was not simply the mistake, it was the lack of an opportunity to address it promptly because our server never came back to the table, followed by a response that felt dismissive rather than genuinely concerned about what had happened. I appreciate that they ultimately remade my salad and removed $3 from the bill, but given the circumstances, that did not feel like meaningful service recovery. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone who needs truly careful gluten-free accommodations, and I won't be returning. read more

I'm going to tell you very simply that the food is good, the ambience is nice and fairly unique and the service is great because they seem like they actually wanna help you and they show up at the perfect times Now what's a little bit odd is that this restaurant and three others Pretty much have the same exact menu which I don't really understand. Yes the food at each of them does taste a little bit different but why in such a small town have four restaurants that are basically the same? I'm gluten-free and dairy free so I did have a pretty limited selection because I also can't eat beef or seafood but what I had was fine. It did the job and filled me up but I wouldn't rave about it So, you might end up trying all four of these very similar restaurants even though they are not owned by the same person and figuring out which one you might like the best. None of them have amazing food. I remember when this was the Ram Pub and it was full of college students drinking copious amounts of beer. It is now a much more refined eatery with a very tasty menu. I had the fish and chips and I was surprised that half my fish was cod but half my fish was catfish. It's not often you get catfish in the Pacific Northwest and I like to eat my catfish in the south. However, this catfish was scrumptious. The tables are nicely spread out. They have a number of four-person booths. The bar also has tables as well as a bar where you can sit and enjoy a great meal. Food is good. They count drinks and cut off based on numbers not behavior. Charge a mandatory 8% tip without informing until bill is given. Then they ask for a tip on top of that. Serious Bullshit charging a mandatory tip then servers asking for additional tip. It is already overpriced but to automatically add 8% then servers asking for tips is wrong. Stopped for a quick bite & decided to try the catfish po boy. The service was quick & my server was super friendly. Food tasted really good, po boy had a lil spice to it but it was the perfect amount. Just wish there was more catfish on the sandwich. All in all good price great food. It's a very nice and clean space, service is attentive and sweet, bar does a good job and overall quality is excellent. We have been coming to Birch and Barley ever since we started visiting WSU. This place quickly became a capstone of our Pullman experience. While the menu is expansive and can seem intimidating at first, I've loved everything I've ordered here. From the lobster mac n 'cheese to the gumbo, everything is executed well and tastes delicious. Servings are generous, and many of the dishes are served with a side of fresh bread and butter. While I try something new on the menu each time I visit, I make sure to get an order of the fries and fry sauce (the fries pair well with everything). In addition to the excellent food, Birch and Barley's hospitality also sets it apart from other restaurants. The staff is friendly, and the cozy yet spacious dining room always feels welcoming. I went to Pullman, WA for my daughter's graduation in Idaho. I wanted to find a place before leaving Albuquerque, NM. I felt it was a hit or miss since I found them on yelp. I made a reservation for the family. I was so impressed with the food and our waitress was very informative and courteous. Best food ever! Appetizers awesome. The ambiance excellent. Hubby and I were in Pullman for a barn wedding, and stopped in at this place as it was next door to our hotel, and the wedding party had their rehearsal dinner there the night before. We weren't disappointed. Hubby ordered a pork tenderloin sandwich, Teenager had the quinoa bowl and I had the lobster mac and cheese with Cougar Gold. All three were terrific and service was great, pleasant and timely; recommendations were spot on. They have a nice interior and a great space for outdoor dining. You would think, for a restaurant that has been dealing with graduation weekends for quite some time, that they would have their staff all on the same page for reservations. Alas, that is not what I came across. I called 4 months before commencement weekend to ask about reservations, to which I was informed to call one month prior. If commencement is on May 6th, it would make sense that one month prior is April 6th. I called today, 15 minutes after they opened, and was informed that they started taking reservations on April 5th and were already booked up. When I told the person on the phone that was not what I was told, she just repeated herself as if that would change the situation. Of course, I did not expect her to make exceptions, but I did expect her to at least address the severe miscommunication. I tried to look on their website to see if there was a way I could email them about the situation, but all that was offered was a phone number and social media - so I am taking to Yelp to inform not just the management team but others of the subpar service. I will not return to Birch & Barley and I sure won't recommend it to friends and family either. read more
