This a nice sit down restaurant and came here because it was next to the quality inn hotel. I loved the atmosphere it had and our server was nice. The restaurant was nice and clean and didn't have a wait to be seated. We even arrived at 6:30pm. The wait time for our food wasn't too long either. Micah had the fish and chips and said they were tasty. The crab cakes were cooked to perfection and very good. My cheeseburger had a unique type of cheese to it and was super good! One star for customer service... Looked online and it showed they closed at 9pm. Showed up and the door said they closed at 9pm. We arrived at 805pm. We were told "I'm sorry, but we stop seating at 8pm." I said "but everything says you close at 9pm, why would you turn customers away before closing". She said they actually close at 8pm but it's not posted anywhere. I worked in restaurants for years in both front and back of house. We sat people until closing time. We built it into the employee schedules to do that. To stop seating an hour early and not have that posted anywhere is ridiculous and unprofessional. Called and spoke to who said they were the GM. We came here on a Sunday evening, and had an amazing meal in the dining area; the decor is rustic and the service is attentive & polite. I didn't try any of the beers or wines, but the food was perfect! My boyfriend said that the potatoes that came with his prime rib had a "slight celery taste," but "the meat was good." A discerning palate, indeed. I had the creole paella, and loved every bite of it!! Seriously, if you like seafood and great flavor, GET THIS! Birch and Barley is one of my favorite restaurants in Pullman. It is my go-to. I always order the Cougar Burger with Bacon. It is a cheeseburger with Cougar Gold Cheese and a toasted bun. If you have never had Cougar Gold Cheese, it is absolutely delicious. On this burger, it is perfection. It makes the average cheeseburger even better with its delicious and unique cheesy flavor. The fries are thicker, but still nicely crunchy. They are lightly seasoned, but flavorful. Great for dipping in ketchup! The other night I also ordered a side salad. I had ranch on top. The dressing comes on the side, so you can decide how much you want on top. Of course, I just dump it all on top instead of spreading things out evenly. Toppings are the usual croutons, cherry tomatoes, cheese, and cucumbers on top of greens. My favorite appetizer here is definitely the Golden Honey BBQ Birch Wings. Any of the flavors are delicious, but this is often the flavor we choose. It is not spicy and everyone can agree on it. The Buffalo Birch Wings flavor is spicy, but amazing. I would recommend that to those who like a kick. Wings come in bone-in or boneless. I always order boneless. So much easier to eat! Accessibility: This restaurant is mostly accessible. Although there is a ramp into the restaurant, there is no accessible washroom. The washroom in the restaurant portion has a larger stall, but no grab rails and it is up a set of stairs. There are both tables and chairs and booths. The chairs do NOT have arms. The bar has some high tables, too. It can get busy and noisy here but it should not be an issue. Lighting should not be an issue either. The tables are not too close together in the restaurant, a little tighter in the bar. Side note: A little before Thanksgiving last year and the Apple Cup, I took my parents out to Birch and Barley. My family and I are all huge Huskies fans. We all wore our purple and gold, my partner his crimson and grey. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant and everyone stared at us when we came in and sat down. We laughed. All in good fun! My daughter and I had an excellent meal at Birch and Barley. The dining room was full so we were seated on the patio. The service was great. We sat down and a couple minutes later we had water delivered. We ordered using the QR memo. My daughter had the lobster Mac and cougar gold cheese. She loved it. I would be more critical if the prices were higher, but as it is, we had a great experience at dinner last night. We each ordered the ribeye, and all three were cooked perfectly to order. The fat was rendered beautifully and the seasoning was spot on. It's been several years since I *haven't* been disappointed by a restaurant steak, but the steak at B&B was terrific. The sides were straight-forward, but cooked and seasoned well. I also ordered a cup of gumbo and a side salad to share. The gumbo was good - hearty and meaty - but leaning toward bland (I really only ordered it to compare it to what I've been tinkering to make at home). Still, tasty enough to not regret ordering it. The house salad was the dependable roughage that we expected. The portion sizes of everything were spot-on. We each ended with pondering our last two bites; whether we should pack the last bite to take home or finish very full; we chose the latter. Service was attentive and kind, with a touch of personality that helped to make the evening memorable. The dining area was visually cozy. The atmosphere was comfortable. The service was busy but not so loud that it interfered with our conversation. Everything was clean and well maintained. I look forward to returning next time we are in town. read more

Very accommodating for larger groups! We had 10 people at our table and the place was busy with 2 or 3 other very large tables, but we never felt like the service was slow or we were being ignored in anyway. The drinks were unusual and very tasty so don't be afraid to order an adult beverage! I had the prime rib dipper sandwich with fries, the beef was cooked perfectly and the bread was light an perfectly fluffy. (Tip: Don't forget to ask for the fresh horseradish...it puts the sandwich over the top!). I also really enjoyed their fries, they were crunchy yet potatoey on the inside. If I could leave 0 I definitely would. Arrived to the establishment at 8:10PM because the Google maps/listing says they close at 10PM. The 2 young lady host were very quick to tell me they were no longer accepting any more tables without greeting us. I asked what time did they stop seating for future reference and one stated they took their last table at 7:59PM. I asked what time they closed or was to-go an option and that was quickly met with "we're not taking anymore tables and we're closed now". We were so impressed with this restaurant! The food ( we had 2 types of fish) was beyond excellent. This will become our first choice place to go out and eat, even though it is a 30 mile drive one way ... it is worth the drive! The staff were so friendly and helpful and we loved that 2 different people ( at least one was an owner) came by our table wanting to know our thoughts on their business... I love it when owners are so involved with their customers.. The ambience was so nice, quiet , comfortable and made us want to stay just a bit longer. This is probably the most dog-friendly restaurant I've visited. The staff takes extra care to be sure that your "furry friend" is as comfortable as you are. The staff is over-the-top great! Now for the food! In a few words, large and yummy portions. You will not go away hungry or disappointed. My favorite (so far) has been the ribs. (If you order these -- and you should -- ask for the "Dry Rub" version, and get the BBQ sauce on the side. (A tip from Lisa, our waitress.) Then, dip the ribs in the BBQ sauce. Talk about a flavor explosion! For a real treat, be sure to ask for the "Risotto Cakes" on the side. (Extra credit if you can finish it all -- the portions are generous!) Blackened salmon was great, lobster Mac and cheese with cougar cheese (local cheese) was excellent. Everyone was happy and enjoyed. Had dinner with 8 people. Reservation made and went off without a hitch. Seated in a large comfortable table on time. The ambiance is noisy, but tolerable. Our server was excellent. The drink menu was extensive and average pricing. They have a diverse menu. The double barrel burger was excellent. So was the blackened salmon, mushroom chicken, and lobster Mac and cheese. We came at around 8pm on a weekday and there was still seating/parking. It was busy but not too busy. We sat outside and it was pleasant. It felt nice and open but also clean. It wasn't noisy either. My only issue was that there were a few flies and bees that kept flying by us while we were sitting/eating. Service was friendly when it was there but our waitress only checked on us once and we didn't have our waters refilled. I had the gumbo, which didn't really have any taste besides the sausage. I usually like the base to have a kick to it but this basically tasted like gravy. Okra is my favorite part of gumbo but it was so mushy/over-cooked that I could barely taste it. It kind of just disintegrated in my mouth. The bread it came with, however, was surprisingly tasty. It had an excellent consistency: sturdy enough for sop the gumbo up with but not too hard and didn't taste stale. My boyfriend had the cajun pasta which was alright (had more flavor that my gumbo at least). We will probably come again but I'll probably try something different next time or ask for hot sauce from the start. read more

B&B is my favorite restaurant in Pullman. The cougar burger is easily the best burger I've ever had. With that being said, the past 2 times I've ordered it, it has been horrific. I mean terrible and inedible. Please fix this immediately Bitch and Barley!!!!!! This has been since the new year. My burger was overcooked, charred on the outside, and absolutely flavorless. I couldn't eat it!! A complete 180 from the past like500 times I've ordered this. I want to update my review once this issue gets fixed. This restaurant is nothing less than excellent. We recently had an extended stay in Pullman and the restaurant was right beside us. We decided to place a to go order. The staff was very friendly on the phone and had our order ready to go in no time! I had the fried Sirloin Steak Tips and my partner had the fried chicken dish. They were both very good and cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes were great with the steak tips. My partner lived the chicken and mashed potatoes but didn't care for the rice dish that came with it. It had a funky taste. The price was a little on the pricey side, so be advised. Overall, great food and was home cooked quality. I would highly recommend them for dinner. They have a great American menu! I will more than likely eat here again when I come back! :) read more

While in town for a conference Birch & Barley was recommended by the hotel staff when I asked for a good steak location. Spot on recommendation. The restaurant was busy but I was warmly and promptly greeted. As a party of one an open space at the bar met my needs perfectly. Staff were friendly and efficient; as a former restaurant employee you can tell that the team here works well together and doesn't get phased by a heavy dinner rush. At their recommendation I converted my Rye Manhattan to an old fashioned and was not disappointed. They NY Strip with crumbled butter and blue cheese was well seasoned and cooked to desired temp. Seasonal spaghetti squash was on point and the garlic mashed were par for the course. Since I cannot find it on the East Coast a side of cougar gold mac and cheese was recommended and it was a great choice. The use of orecchiette was different and complimented the not too thick salty white sauce. A glass of house red blend was passable but a choice from the wine list may be a better bet if you have a more refined palate. The atmosphere is casual and the whiskey list extensive. I have been a fairly frequent patron. It was to be one I regretted. It was a great place to eat and meet others. Yesterday, I joined a friend for dinner. I ordered the blackened prime rib. It was so tough that even the Serrated steak knife couldn't cut through it all. It was definitely not a prime rib slice. It had neither been blackened in the skillet or with a spice rub.
