This restaurant is a great place for your typical American food. I've gotten some of their sandwiches and their Cajun pasta. The service is always great, and it has a wonderful feel for a date night. Was down in Pullman taking a pet to WSU veterinary Hospital. We had some time to kill so we ordered take out from this restaurant. What I will say is that it was FABULOUS. One of the best chicken caesar salads Ive ever had. My daughter had the quinoa bowl and LOVED IT. There was a ton of food. They even added sliced lemon to my salad. I will definitely be going back when I'm in the area. The staff was super friendl and helpful. The only con was the cheesecake. It could use some work. It was good and we enjoyed it, but I felt the ricotta cheese, cream cheese, & egg ratio could use some tweaking. The texture was a tad curdle. I would order again though because it was still good. Ok so me and a colleague that I work with stopped in for lunch and usually this place has good food. I guess this was an off day or week. There were about 5 tables in the whole place so it was not too busy by any means. The waitress was awesome and very polite. I ordered the Gumbo soup and the chicken strips. The gumbo was good but the chicken strips were terrible.. They were way over cooked. I told the waitress about it and but I didn't have time to wait for another burnt batch to be delivered to me. I don't think I will eat lunch here again in the future. I have attached a pic of these burnt strips. Maybe this is how they are suppose to be. Who knows. If Yelp separated out the rating based on food and service and atmosphere, we'd give the waitress and hostess a solid 4 stars. A delight that they don't pass food over the other diners. The atmosphere and food get the solid 3 stars. This place is the baguette capital of eastern Washington. Grilled cheese on a baguette. Baguette with every soup dish. It's ok, unique. The soup is good. The chicken tenders were fried dark brown. The fish fry was interesting but tasted good. The restaurant is clean. Good prices. We'll come back for lunch. read more

Service was excellent and timely. Wife and friend each ordered the same daily special steak. It was wonderful. I think there was a marinade and the steak was fresh and cooked perfectly. Couldn't finish all the steak and the leftovers, eaten the next day as cold thin slices, were like the best fresh moist candy jerky ever. I don't usually, but I went cheap and ordered the chicken with mushroom cream sauce. My husband and I ate dinner here one of the two nights we were in Pullman. Despite it being the start of a busy Saturday evening, one of the hostesses was very friendly and accommodated our take out order then brought it to us where we were waiting outside. I had the Quinoa Bowl with no cheese and added grilled chicken, which was very tasty. My husband had the Cougar Burger. They have outdoor seating, but it wasn't set up yet. Birch and barley was expensive for the quality of burger I had, the bun felt low quality and the meat itself was forgettable. It's quite surprising to me, as this restaurant has okay steak quality for the price, but nearby restaurants can offer much better quality food at less cost. Sure it looks great on the outside and the dining inside is nice, but it REALLY depends on what you order. Certain items are okay, some aren't that great. I've been here twice and the first time I was happy, but the second time I was disappointed with the quality of what I found to be a relatively simple dish compared to the price. read more

Very friendly and warm atmosphere. Lots of college kids there the night we went so they were super busy. I ordered the sirloin steak bites (medium)with loaded baked potato. They were out of sour cream (how could they not know they needed more sour cream?) Also my steak bites were well cooked, almost tasted like beef jerkey. The waitress offered to have it cook again but I didn't want to wait again as we waited almost an hour for our food. I did end up having my meal comped. I appreciated that. We just had a wonderful dinner at the Birch and Barley. We are visiting from Portland and were looking for a spot to have dinner. We haven't eaten dinner out since the Covid shut down in March... about 3 months. We are so excited to be able to dine out. They didn't disappoint. I had the mussels and small house salad. My husband had a large grilled salmon salad. Both were delicious. Service was speedy and friendly. We couldn't have asked for a better dining experience. The price was very reasonable. I'd heard mixed reviews. Some people said it was delicious and some people said it was just another mediocre restaurant with some decent beers on tap. So i tried it. We went into the bar, found a table and were greeted quickly. The service was great! The gentleman taking care of us was friendly and happy, and he got us everything we needed quickly. We tried this 'ice-shot' special they had going on with their house infused vodka. $3 shots of cilantro-jalepeno vodka in a shot glass made of ice. Done. Not bad. The beer selection was good. Not great. Their cocktail list was same-old stuff. Nothing new or interesting. And the big screen TV's everywhere made it seem more like a sports bar. The menus looked appetizing, but nothing really popped out at any of us. We finally decided on some stuff and ordered. The food was... meh. Not inedible, but not that good. My friend's salmon was bland. His whole dish was lacking any sort of spice or flavor. My boyfriend got the special, salmon pasta, which was also pretty bland. Not horrible, but nothing great. I had the gumbo and it was OK. Just pretty unimpressive overall. It left a weird 'woodsy' flavor in my mouth. The gumbo was probably the worst dish of the three. Update -- tried this place again and this time - got food poisoning - shrimp etoufee was a big mistake. Also - only order the grilled salmon salad if you LOVE dry spinach and only want 3-4 bites of salmon. Sorry B&B - we gave you another chance but this was the last It seems that if you're not a local or not a regular -- your service is not great. We waited .. I ordered water and never got it .. but our server spent plenty of time with neighboring tables because he knew them. Food was decent but if you're not a local... I would give 3.5/5 if I could. The problem is their service/quality if food/ etc is not consistent. One day you order an entree and it's great and the other time you order the exact same thing and you get a different taste. I asked the waitress and she nicely explained they have a different chef. I get that but seriously how frequently your staff changes? We go there a lot less since they took off the only veggie burger they had in their menu. I cannot have the south west wrap every time we go there. So.... please add more veggie options in your menu. There is not vegetarian/vegan restaurant in town. Consider it please!!! read more

This is a wonderful place with amazing food and atmosphere. We were lucky enough to be in Pullman the day after it opened. We will be there in the future because they are trying hard to di their best and make a come back. I have to say that what I witnessed in the bathroom was hard to watch ... an employee with a rag I assume with disinfectant wipes down the entire bathroom and the toilet and toilet seat with the same rag I front of us. We could not believe it ! She did not even consider what she was doing - spreading pathogens all over!! I hope this is corrected by future employee training. read more

Being in town for a conference on St. Patricks Day I was glad I went here. It wasn't all crazy and over the top for the Holiday, yet they did have some green beer and it seemed pretty busy. I ordered up the Cougar Burger, it was all right. Nothing to go raving about, but nothing to complain about either. I liked the truffle fries too. My coworker ordered up what looked to be like chicken golf balls. Not bad either, not amazing either. I had some grapefruit drink and it was good but maybe just a little too much ice and not enough drink. Prices don't seem that bad, maybe a tad high, but check out their website, they have all the prices on the PDF menus. Pretty cool that they do that. I like the look of the place and the atmosphere was nice, but the bar was busy for St. Paddy's day so it's not gonna be the same as normal. Service was a little screwy, I think my coworkers chicken balls were given to another table so that slowed everything down to double time, which come to think of it, may have effected my burgers flavor too. Oh well. I will go back when I am in town next year for the school. Parking was full so we just parked on the nearby street no problem. But if you don't like walking more than 50 feet, have your friend drop you off at the door you lazy butt! read more

Pricey for the quality. I've been here three times now and I've always been unimpressed by the food. The salmon with pomegranate was good, but it was served with unseasoned, soggy beans and bell peppers. The lobster mac was good, but a bit too rich and heavy. Staying next door at the Quality Inn, I ordered takeout, the Cougar Burger. The burger was so overcooked and neglected that the edges were blackened, the meat completely dried out, and I could not get a bite that didn't taste of char. If this was a half pound of hamburger, then it was of very low quality because the end product was very thin. There was less of the well deserved famous Cougar Gold cheese than a quarter pounder with cheese has at McDonalds. A pathetic slice of tomato, some glacial iceberg lettuce, and a small portion of fries completed this $13 meal. It was awful, I will never go here again. read more

This place is pretty good. I love the whisky scotch flight that was fun. The burgers are ok here and I like the French fries. They have this spicy queso cheese sauce that is good. The staff change over takes customer service to an inconsistent low. It seems 1 in 10 visits has decent customer service. The other 9, don't plan on your order being correct or at times warm when it comes out either. The closing time hours also seem inconsistent. More times than we can count we've been turned away in the evenings. It really is a shame as there is a lot of potential for this location with great beer as well as food. I wanted to like this place so bad. I really did. However, I don't think I'll be returning any time soon - I tried one of their burgers, which left something to be desired. Birch and Barley is always a great place for a meal. They have an excellent lunch selection and I highly recommend the cheese crostini's and tomato basil soup. The crostini's are more like grilled cheese sliders since they are like mini sandwiches. Their pretzel sticks with mustard and pub cheese are also a great go-to appetizer as well. They also offer happy hour specials which are worth checking out as well. All in all a wonderful place to meet up with friends. read more

Terrible experience at this place today, when in the past we had good experiences. Started with the service from Jill. Very curt and condescending. Unfortunate really. Told we could sit on their patio with our party of five. Thought okay, not so busy that the wait was long. Tables open up inside for our party and we ask Jill if we could sit inside and received a sarcastic "No". After a very long wait for our food, one in our party order a steak, granted medium well is not my preference, but the steak was over seasoned and beyond well done is the best we could say. Lastly, the patio was filled with flys and bees. I would not recommend this place based on the lack of service, a hugh miss on the steak and the fact that when we mentioned the bees for medical purposes, Jill decided it was best to tell us we were complaining. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere. Birch and Barley does not deserve it. Our waiter, a college undergraduate was the best thing. We left her a good tip! read more

Funny little place in Pullman just off campus. Was hoping for great atmosphere and great food. We sat inside, outside looked good but too hot. The inside was freezing and very morgue-like, tables spread way apart, slick floor, and kinda empty :-( The food was just ok. We had fish chicken strips (2), fish, friend-dip & Cuban for all 5. Fish and chicken seemed tough and overlooked; sandwiches were cobbled together with dry meat and bread that fell apart. The kicker = it all cost $100! We are very disappointed with Birch & Barley. This was our first visit, and it will be the last. My husbands steak was ordered medium, and was served bloody rare and he couldn't eat it. His salad had alot of browned lettuce in it, so he didn't want to eat that either. My French Dip sandwich had the right amount of thinly sliced prime rib, but the au jus was completely flavorless. The sweet potato fries I had with it were really good. Our daughter ordered the Tortellini with a Chimichurri sauce that was way too spicy, and she couldn't eat it. Overpriced Cisco food. The tend to over-salt many of their dishes. They are one of the few "games" in town so they are often busy.
