Funny little place in Pullman just off campus. Was hoping for great atmosphere and great food. We sat inside, outside looked good but too hot. The inside was freezing and very morgue-like, tables spread way apart, slick floor, and kinda empty :-( The food was just ok. We had fish chicken strips (2), fish, friend-dip & Cuban for all 5. Fish and chicken seemed tough and overlooked; sandwiches were cobbled together with dry meat and bread that fell apart. The kicker = it all cost $100! We are very disappointed with Birch & Barley. This was our first visit, and it will be the last. My husbands steak was ordered medium, and was served bloody rare and he couldn't eat it. His salad had alot of browned lettuce in it, so he didn't want to eat that either. My French Dip sandwich had the right amount of thinly sliced prime rib, but the au jus was completely flavorless. The sweet potato fries I had with it were really good. Our daughter ordered the Tortellini with a Chimichurri sauce that was way too spicy, and she couldn't eat it. We were comped half the price of the steak since it was their mistake, but we won't be going back to give Birch & Barley another try. read more

Overpriced Cisco food. The tend to over-salt many of their dishes. They are one of the few "games" in town so they are often busy. Frankly we have been so under impressed the last few times we have eaten there, we typically avoid them. The potential is there but cutting corners is obvious. read more

This place is great. Good beer list and some really good food. It's sometimes tough to get in on busy weekends but if you can swing the Bloody Mary one day for brunch, you'll be extremely satisfied. They are unique and well worth the money. read more

Terrible experience at this place today, when in the past we had good experiences. Started with the service from Jill. Very curt and condescending. Unfortunate really. Told we could sit on their patio with our party of five. Thought okay, not so busy that the wait was long. Tables open up inside for our party and we ask Jill if we could sit inside and received a sarcastic "No". After a very long wait for our food, one in our party order a steak, granted medium well is not my preference, but the steak was over seasoned and beyond well done is the best we could say. Lastly, the patio was filled with flys and bees. I would not recommend this place based on the lack of service, a hugh miss on the steak and the fact that when we mentioned the bees for medical purposes, Jill decided it was best to tell us we were complaining. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere. Birch and Barley does not deserve it. Our waiter, a college undergraduate was the best thing. We left her a good tip! read more

Not a bad place. Clean, warm, and comfortable come to mind. Very good attentive service from a young man who had a good attitude. Has a decent selection of beer. I found a stout I liked. I had a half rack of ribs with risotto on the side. I was very pleased with some nice looking asparagus. But it was undercooked. A couple were just barely warmed thru. But it was all good to me. Ribs were disappointing. Not to bad, but disappointing. I call them flat ribs. Only meat was between the bones. Low end ribs from the grocery store. Kind of a not fresh taste to what was there. Dry rub was too salty. The saving grace was the BBQ sauce. I recognized the taste (store bought) but couldn't put my finger on the brand. I flew up from SF Bay Area just to have lunch and visit family. Also I wanted to get some salmon or halibut while dining out so I saw salmon on lunch menu. On a salad of course. Not to fond of spinach I opted for mixed greens with a lite dressing. This salad was topped with a nicely prepared grilled salmon. Presentation just increased my enjoying this lunch item. Hats off to the cook, no no the Chef. This is one of the ways you can have a fish entree without paying the high dinner price later in the day I think I will try the gumbo or shrimp po boy next visit When you visit here check out the bar and the decor. I have been in several times. What impressed me even more than the delicious and diverse menu was the manner in which we were treated by the wait staff. They recognized us as repeat customers and went out of the way to chat and visit with us. The catfish po boy is my favorite but if you have a more sophisticated tastes some of the Cajun dishes might be up your alley. The Bloody Mary menu is the best I've ever seen. read more

A group of co-workers and I decided to have dinner and drinks here during an out of town retreat. They kindly accommodated a larger group and provided us with fast, friendly service. All the dood was wonderful - high quality and generous portions, all served with a smile. Impressive beer collection as well! I have been to Birch and Barley 3 times, and this will be my last. I had hoped that what I ordered just wasn't the right thing on my previous visits, so I wanted to try again. This time my wife and I started with the pretzel appetizer ($7.95) which was quite delicious. My wife ordered the mussels ($12.50) as her entree and I had the blackened salmon Caesar salad ($15.95). My salad was mediocre at best. The salmon was dry, but I just used some of the salad dressing to overcome that. My wife's mussel dish came with 20 mussels (yes, I counted and you will see why). The broth was buttery and quite good. After having a few she found a dud (mussel that didn't open). After a little more inspection found four more for a total of 5 mussels that she couldn't eat. That's 25% of the total dish. We brought this up to our server who replied "oh man, that happened a few nights ago too." That was it. She didn't offer to get some more, refund them, offer a dessert...... Nothing. For the prices Birch and Barley charges, there is much better food in Pullman. read more

The whole experience was as bland as Kristen Stewart. Ha. Get it? I crack myself up. ANYWAYS! I ordered the seafood salad which was probably over-ambitious and it was remarkably bad. Ok, so a 1 may be a little harsh. But I remember what it was like last year and frankly I would never recommend for people to go back there. Recently I went there on WSU Dad's Weekend and November 2nd. The crawfish ettofee is still great! However service has gone way downhill. Also for the price I'm paying for the dishes I should not have to box my own food. Biggest pet peeve of mine. There appetizers have also gone downhill. My friend got the crab cakes. They were dry and was there even crab in there. We waited 15 minutes for extra bread, that was supposed to go with the dinner dish. Not OK. This restaurant is just overpriced for mediocre food and bad service. Its not a terrible place, but a lot of little things add up to make it an unpleasant dining experience. read more

I wanted to like this place but it's hit or miss. The shrimp and crawfish are way too small. I'm from Louisiana and the po-boys and étouffée were horrible. The recipe on the menu said it was from my home town Baton Rouge...no way. Other than that the burger meat was good but the bread they use with the burgers and po-boys is weird. The fried lobster was okay but way too much breading and greasy. AND for all you Dr Pepper lovers...none. I also tried the steak which was chewy and not worth ordering again. We went on the first Friday after opening. The service did seem slow and disorganized which I hope will get better over time. The drinks are pricy compared to other restraunts in town. I ordered the fried lobster tail. I do not recommend it. I expected a whole lobster tail, instead I got bite size pieces. The portion size was very small (not worth 18). I had to send my meal back because of the tiny portion size. One of my friends ordered a burger and it looked good. This joint is amazing. Several meals out on our 5 day trip and this was by far the highlight. Local, fresh ingredients, fantastic service. Our kids have allergies so eating out is sometimes a challenge. Our waitress was very helpful and double checked menu items for us. Even gave us an alumni discount without us even asking. Very friendly atmosphere. The bloody Mary's looked amazing although we didn't get them. We lived the Cougar Burger, Viking Cheddar crostini's and tomato soup, steak Cesar salad, even chicken tenders hand breaded. Just outstanding all the way around. Go Cougs! read more

I've been here twice since coming back to pullman, the food was amazing the first time and the waitress was extremely friendly and even asked the chefs to make my etouffee less spicy, and it was delicious! The second time I got the catfish and couldn't even eat it because the spice was so intense I couldn't taste anything, and the black bean pancakes they had with the fish weren't great either. I'd have to go back again for a third shot to see what my actual thoughts Third time is the charm. I came here for my 21st birthday this year with my family. I made a reservation and was sat immediately. Our waitress got our drink order very quickly and came back shortly for the food order. The food was good and the atmosphere was very pleasant. So some people seem to be pretty harsh to a restaurant that has just opened up. Anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant knows there are going to be some kinks to work out with a grand opening. Servers have to start somewhere and they are going to be a little slow until they get enough practice. Give em a break guys. I went to Birch and Barley on the second night of opening just to check it out and to be honest, it was great. They sat us right away. Brought drinks, were very prompt and had a great menu (drinks and food). Just because a restaurant is located in Pullman doesn't mean you are going to get your meal for under $10. So, if you are going to go out to eat, go into Birch and Barley knowing it is a higher class restaurant and entrees are a bit more spendy than say, South Fork or Fireside. In my opinion, it's worth it, but everyone's entitled to their own. All I want to say is that new restaurants take a while to get in the swing of things, so if you don't get your Cosmo in 2 minutes, relax. I'm sure you'll get it. read more

I went there twice in the last week, loved the prime rib! Service was okay, she was frazzled and kept forgetting parta of our order or when we asked for bread and utensils. Happy hour was definitely much more worth it though, 6$ for the clams was amazing. Amazing food!!! The artichoke dip is the bomb as is the pretzel appetizer with cheese and mustard dips. Steak bites were fab too as was lobster Mac n cheese and chocolate cake. Great food, menu has a variety of selections which don't seem to focus on anything in particular unless the Cajon/Creole themed dishes is an attempt ... From steam mussel appetizer to some steak/chicken dishes with the obligatory Salmon (Which I attempted to discern as Atlantic/farmed but management was not forthcoming...I don't eat Atlantic Salmon for environmental and health reasons as the farmed variety is toxic) dishes. The food I have eaten there is very good. The Whiskey/Scotch they keep on hand is extensive and unequaled by most bars on the Palouse...Prices are on the high side but the food that is produced is worth the cost. read more

Smashing place! We went in for dinner on a week night. We sat in the bar area -- high tops only -- but okay we were dressed very casually and tired from our travel day. We started with cocktails which were exceptionally good and properly served. The bartender knows her trade! We had the Cougar Burger--simple burger topped with Washington State University's own speciality white cheddar cheese, Cougar Gold. Really great burger and fries. We were looked after by Andru who was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area, the menu and the bar offerings. He was a great host! Overall, this was a good choice and we'll return. read more

Well, this was my first fancy restaurant in the northwest USA. I went there to meet my immediate family. I loved how my 4 year old grandson made observations on the architecture and de'coure. He said, "Look at the cloth" draping in the ceiling. I noted that it is to soften and warm (figuratively) the environment. He then said, "I think this use to be a barn." I agreed that he may be right. He got the children's macaroni with a side og garlic green beans. The noodles were curly with lots of roasted cheese. The serving was large enough for an adult which allowed him left overs. My daughter go the the Beef Dip which also provided enough to take half home. My granddaughter ordered the "Cougar" Burger (named after the WSU Football team). She got too full to eat her fries. My son-in-law got the rare rib eye steak which took up 3/4 of the oval plate. I got a hot peppermint tea and a cup of beef barley soup, which I asked for a dollop of sour cream on the side because I like to add it to richen the flavor and thicken the texture. All in all I was very impressed. I particularly like the old big Birch tree outside the building and the Birch accent throughout the interior. Having Barley soup on the menu was so appropo. The only reasons I gave it 4 stars is that the waiter forgot to get my granddaughter sauce for her fries, and my daughter noted her father might find it not conducive to prime seating in his wheel chair, but that is debatable because they do have a ramp for wheelchairs and folks like me who have trouble with steps. Other than that, I highly recommend this place starting off with their cheesy artichoke dip and pita chips. read more

So after a long day spent at the Dunes, my friends and I were looking for a place to satisfy our hunger and also a place to just enjoy a drink and relax from the sun. I had been to Birch and Barley once and I believe I had a good time. So I decided to come back and try it again and give it a proper review. Tonight was fairly busy as it was University of Idaho's graduation. But we were able to snag a nice booth in the bar area. Quick synopsis: I will say that the staff were kind and welcoming. Patient with our decision and also gave great suggestions. I will say that the drinks were pretty good. They have a variety of options and I enjoyed my drink. However, I, unfortunately, was not a fan of the entrees. I was quite disappointed. So if you are looking for a nice place to have a drink and hang, then come here, but the food was not a huge hit for me. And my party did not enjoy the food as much as well. Some of us did not finish everything on our plates. I will say that the appetizers are much better. So let's begin with the details: Ambiance: In my visits, I will say that this place can be slight sad when it is empty. The aesthetics of the dining room is very bland. There is not much around to look at. However, the bar area has many things your eyes can wander to. In addition, I will say that it is just seems more lively. During the summer, they open up their porch and I will say that is my favorite seating on a nice day. They have foliage and a nice aesthetic to it. Service: As mentioned above, our server or the staff are kind and welcomed us with a smile. Our specific server was Journey. Journey gave great drink recommendations. Nothing more to say about the service, besides they checked in on us quite often, which was nice. Food: So this is the sad part. Let's start with the positives. Our group ordered the spinach dip and the poutines. They were both fabulous and very enjoyable. We scoffed it all down and very much enjoyed all the appetizers. As for the entrees we were not fans. One of us ordered the sirloin, I ordered the rib-eye, another ordered the mac and cheese, and another ordered the po'boy. I will say that the rib eye was slightly blander than I expected. In addition, I had ordered the rib-eye med. rare, but it came medium and that was slightly upsetting. Along with the rib-eye and the sirloin, came with green beans, were extremely upsetting. They were soggy and had no flavor. Instead of mash potatoes, I substituted it for their mac and cheese. The mac and cheese had no taste. I had ask for salt to put on the mac and cheese and the green beans. My friend who got the mac and cheese, also concurred with my thoughts and was so happy when I asked for the salt. My friend who got the po' boy enjoyed their meal. I wish I had tasted it, but those are my thoughts on my food. I do not plan on returning to the restaurant, because I felt I had paid for food that was not worth it. I will return if my friends will but I will focus on only ordering appetizers. read more

Another Pullman hotspot that deserves better reviews. Amazing staff, great food, a huge selection of rotating cocktails and beers. This is me and my boyfriends go to dinner spot, especially for their happy hour deals! This is truly a 3.5. The risotto cakes were devine! I had the baked chicken, and it was just "ok," pretty standard chicken. My husband said the steak was pretty good as well. Apple crumble was very good. Our service was great! We were greeted by a friendly hostess and our server was very nice and helpful. She brought out the beer my husband asked for as a sample without him even asking, just to make sure he like it first, that's great service!
