One of my families go to spots. The food is all good and better than most typical bar style restaurant. Beer cheese soup and their sandwiches are all good. I usually go with the fiery chicken sandwiches, they are fantastic. They have a good rotating tap but I typically buy from one of their 18 beer fridges. Definitely the best selection in the area. Pro tip: lots of drinks in the fridges are sub $4 compared to the typical $6-8 draft pours. If you have kids that have chocolate milk and bottled juices for around $1. The pretzel was excellent and I liked the mustard a lot although the cheese was also a favorite for our table! I missed the bus so I stopped in for a quick beverage. I didn't make it in time for Hoppy Hour but it's nice to see for future reference. Always an extensive list of choices for every taste bud. It's pretty quiet in here right now, 10 til 2. I'll definitely come back when I can. I do miss the French Dip.It's no longer available. There's also board games, tvs with the game on, quiet corners for those looking to sip and people watch, outside seating next to blooming Daughne, coolers with selections to go, and a Build Your Own Taster Flight. Honestly I don't have much to say about this place other than it felt pretty average. They had a pretty good vegetarian variety on their menu but the food didn't really wow me. I'd say if you're going to come here it really would be for their drink selection. They have lots of beers, ciders, and kombuchas on tap as well as a whole wall of refrigerators of bottled drinks organized from most local to least. We came in on a Friday night at about 8:30pm and weren't able to find a seat inside so we opted for outside but it was a bit chilly and they don't have many fire pits. I would also be mindful if you're under 21 or coming in with anybody under 21 because they have a strict no minors allowed after 9pm. I'm glad my whole party was of age because they didn't tell any of us this when we were ordering even though a few of us didn't order alcoholic beverages (this is only relevant because they didn't see those peoples IDs and had no idea if they were 21 or not) even though we were only a short time away from 9pm. This seemed to upset a lot of the party's who had to leave after barely sitting down to enjoy their meal. read more

I have always loved the Bier Stein but it seems like the food has become progressively mediocre, smaller and MUCH more expensive. I can understand the inflationary period that we are in and that resturants margins are hurting, but come on! The Spitfire sandwich w/fries I ordered recently was $18 (before tip) and was probably 1/3 smaller than it has been in the past. I left hungry. Stopped in last Saturday night for some dinner. The restaurant was moderately busy. We sat at the bar and ordered some food. After we ordered we were quickly asked if we wanted to keep our tab open or close out. It was strange but clearly they're having issues with people not paying their check. I handed my credit card only to find out that if I used a credit card there would be a 3% charge! Interesting that they want the customer to pay their fee for merchant services. I have a wonderful solution for "THE BIER STEIN" pay your merchant service fees! Your customers are already paying exorbitant meal prices. After a couple of days in a row mountain biking in the beautiful Oregon forests, I found myself craving a good fried chicken salad and a pint. Yelp isn't great at finding a specific crave, but perusing the list of beer purveyors in Eugene, I found The Bier Stein. Their menu showed both a Caesar salad and a fried chicken Caesar wrap, so I figured I'd be golden. The on-site menu showed lots of protein add-on options for their salads, but no fried chicken. While ordering, (at the bar - no table service here) I was told (very nicely) that fried chicken on a Caesar salad wasn't possible, following defensively with "I don't make the rules". Nothing screams "management doesn't empower its employees" like staff making proactive excuses and clearly being told that it's too arduous to drop a few pieces of fried chicken on a salad (up charge be damned). My solution: get a plain Caesar salad plus an order of chicken strips with fries. Not the cheapest solution, but I got the ingredients to self-assemble the salad I was craving. I tried a few of their IPAs - not bad, but nothing that was particularly differentiated either. The vibe on the patio was nice - mostly full but no problem finding a table at 5:30 on a Labor Day Sunday. They also have huge coolers full of craft beer in cans/bottles. If one were coming here with a group just for the beer, or was fine with the "stock" food menu, I could see this being a good hangout. Unfortunately, they wouldn't serve me what I was looking for, despite having all the ingredients. On top of that, order-at-the-bar-while-sitting-outside is always sketchy for a party of one - you never know when your meal will be prematurely bussed or the table grabbed by another patron while inside ordering a mid-dinner pint. read more

This place was rad when I moved here 8 years ago. Now there service is garbage. The employees at the bar care more about socializing with themselves then customer service. They will look at you and when you try and get there attention they just walk away. This place has the worst service out of anywhere I've been in Eugene. I waited 20 minutes to pay my bill. My GF and I ventured to the Bier Stein last year -- long before the pandemic came into effect. I should preface this by saying that I am not an alcohol drinker. I don't care much for the taste of alcohol and I can tolerate a little bit of it, but not beer; there is something about it that has never tasted good at all. So of course this seems like a great place for me to take my GF, right? As we walked in we noticed it seemed rather dark. There is a large square in the middle of the establishment and that is where you order and the line was about to the doors. I believe this is where you go if you want to try a sample of something or get your beer ordered. Around the outside of the large squared off area was a lot of refrigerators with canned beer to purchase and elsewhere there was various seating (small 2-person tables and larger group tables). We waited for almost 10 minutes in line to get a chance to order. My GF ordered a beer of some kind and we got some food options. I got a burger and she got a sandwich of some kind. The portions were fairly large and matched the price of the food. Both were good, nothing spectacular that I must come in for again, but there were leftovers. Sunlight comes in through a side door closer to the back of the restaurant, so it wasn't quite a dark where we sat, but it was dark most other places. There was a group playing cards at one of the larger group tables that were having a good time. The beer was decent, but the Bier Stein had a lot of choices, so multiple visits would be needed to see how many are really good. I can't speak to that part, but my GF finished most of her drink. Would I come back to the Beir Stein? Sure. The food was okay and the prices for the portion sizes were good. The allure of having beer choices doesn't do much for me personally, but I do like taking people out and watching them have choices like I would have at an ice cream parlor. It is probably a decent place to hang out and spend some time if I enjoyed alcohol, but even beyond that, people around us were having a good time and being part of a good group of people is half the battle (sorry, GI Joe). read more

Most big games are played on their massive projector screen, but with only a few TVs I wouldn't classify it as a sports bar by any means. Waitstaff was sparse, and I gave up after a while. I get COVID protocols and staffing issues. I'm a patient person. What is not okay is someone closing out my check and helping themselves to a 30% tip that I did NOT authorize. The Bier Stein is just a reliant place to go either to sit and get some work done during the day or to catch up with a group of friends in the evening. Not only do they have a varied selection of beers on tap but they have a refrigerated section that spans an entire wall length full of chilled beer, wine, and non alcoholic choices. The food is also always good. I like that their menu changes periodically with the season. However, their beer cheese soup is always there and is always delicious. Just keep in mind on the time of day you are heading over there. If it's a Friday or Saturday evening, especially if it's a nice day out, it's going to be packed. They have a small parking lot so you might have to park on the street. They do offer plenty of seating, however, on busy evenings this is limited. So just keep that in mind. read more

Dropped in during a recent visit to Eugene. I was looking for a place to eat where I didn't have to stick my credit card int a dirty parking meter! They have free parking and the Yelp reviews were decent. I wasn't ready for a beer yet, although I was tempted by a nice variety of domestic and foreign beers in the self-serve cooler and their nice tap list. I ordered a chicken Caesar salad and my expectations were not that high in this pub environment. I was pleasantly surprised. The salad was good sized, and the chicken was tender and tasty and Parmesan seemed fresh. Nice airy Bob Marley type music was playing in the background. I enjoyed the food and atmosphere. TVs didn't dominate the place. That was nice. I will come back for a beer. I enjoyed the bear head with antlers over the fireplace and the clean restroom. read more
