I loved the old Bier Stein, but never felt like I could relax in the small space. Now that the Stein is settled in it's new location, I feel like I can take my time and enjoy the company and people watching. Not to mention, the outside space is wonderful for bringing my dog and relaxing. I've run in to grab a 6-pack from the bottle area, and I LOVE the beer board with real-time keg life. I usually get the beer dip sandwich but my husband has switched it up on the different occasions we've been here and he always leaves full and happy. Good food rarely outweighs poor service. It's an odd combination of very nice staff, good food, good drinks, and awful service. I understand that this place is a "hotspot" right now, but it's also so busy sometimes that there's no hope in sight, when wanting moderately quick service. Great fries too. Visited some friends in Eugene and they took me here. They both are non drinkers and know I love beer, so they did this to spoil me. Not only was the beer excellent, I had some of the best sausages I've ever eaten in my life here. This place is great if you only go for the beer. I would strongly suggest skipping the food. It is pricey, and bland. The chicken and doughnuts sounds soooo good, but it usually ends up tasting like old fryer grease (I've had it twice). My boyfriend got a reuben that was super plain and weird. It had a disgusting, mushy texture and was not seasoned in any sense. However when it isn't completely packed with people, The Bier Stein is a lovely place to grab a beer, and to show your out-of-town friends a good selection of local beer. read more

Went here the other night to grab a beer and pick up some bottles to go. The new location's great! Its much easier to find seating than the old location, and they even added a pool table (just one, but still). The prices may seem higher than elsewhere in Eugene, but you get what you pay for - and having been in LA for the past 9 months, the prices are NOTHING to complain about. The staff I encountered were all friendly, and readily able to make suggestions. I personally prefer this new location, but am potentially biased since the place I'm living at is only four blocks away. The only reason I docked it one star is because they still close at 11 - can't they at least stay open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights? read more

Great beers, and you can't find a bigger selection anywhere. I like that they have 27 or so rotating taps with beers from all over, and two taps that are Nitrous. I had a dounle chocolate stout from the nitrous tap and it was definitely smooth and tasty. The food is pretty good but slow coming out and I really wish they would take orders at your table vs waiting in line to order, but then again this is more like a pub than restaurant. It's obvious that beer is the main priority. Definitley the gigantic cooler full of hundreds of beers from around the world is worth seeing but it is very overwhelming for all but the most knowledgeable beer connoiseur. It would be helpful if there was an "expert" on hand to help customers find beers they like. I ended up not taking any to go because I just couldn't decide what to gamble on. We went on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch, and it was still relatively busy. - Want any kind of service, even if it's a refill? Get in line. - The video boards are cool and the highlighting of Foursquare check-ins and Twitter mentions is cool - There are 24 beers on tap, which is impressive for Eugene - The sandwiches were fantastic and at around $10, were a good size For the bottle shop aspect, they get an A+ because you'll be hard pressed to find any place in town with their wide selection. Atmosphere rocks, but you're paying for it as beers are $5+ and up. You might also be bummed to not find as many local Oregon beers on their tap list, but I'm sure that changes month to month. Would I go again? For sure. And I bet it's a fantastic place for big groups. read more

Amazing! A must try if you are visiting Eugene. I ordered the dip sandwich vegetarian style, so the meat was substituted with grilled tempeh. I have a major issue with the Bier Stein, the music is too repetitive. Hear me out on this. See, the problem is the food, beer selection, atmosphere and most of all the staff are so great, that I find myself in there most days for lunch or a drink after work. In fact, I'm in so often that I've noticed the music playlist is pretty much the same every day. It's great once a week, but they really should rotate styles day to day. It's literally the only thing they should change. When you visit make sure to try the Mac and Cheese, there is a reason it was voted best in Eugene. The sandwiches, pretzels, and soups are all top notch too. Most of all, talk to the incredibly knowledge staff and take a chance on a beer they recommend. You won't be disappointed. This is the best place in Eugene to find imported beer. I hate the swill that comes from the big American manufacturers, but also hate Pacific Northwest micro-brews, as the brewers out here all have a fascination for bitter beer. The Bier Stein allows me to feed my love of beer, without stooping to something I consider to not be GOOD. They have an ample supply of beers from all over the world, and quite often have something worth trying on tap as well. In addition, they have a decent selection of food, so long as you are not looking for gourmet dining. Like many of our local Eugene hangouts, this place is always busy on a Friday or Saturday night, so arrive early if you want to get a seat. So we stopped in there last night after dinner (one drink at dinner) the front cashier was rude to us right out of the gate for absolutely no reason. We go to the pool table and are playing and having a good time (we've had ONE cider pitcher between 4 people) and we have a ridiculous shot to win the game so we cheered approximately as loud as you'd cheer at a 5 year old kids soccer game... the cashier comes over and tells us that we need to keep it down or else it might be considered that we've been over served.... i think this place should be sub-labeled a "library". This place is not for gluten free. They don't have even substitutes. I tried calling to ask and the guy told me to look at a menu and maybe not eat there. I just don't like when a place turns me down cos I'm celiac. Be polite and have good customer service regardless of the sale. It's a town full of allergies. Got to be respectful of people's issues. They don't want to not eat gluten. They just don't want to get sick so they can't. Offer some ciders or even get some gf buns in the freezer. They keep a long time. After being told about this place my numerous people we gave it a try. The food was very bland and extremely oily. Only end up eating a few bites of my Cheese Steak because it was so oily and flavorless. The beer selection was nice but we found it rather expensive compared to similar locations in Eugene. The Bier Stein is the best place to go for unusual beer. If you want a local brew you are better off visiting the brewery, especially Hop Valley which has the best bar food at a local brewery in town. I want to like the Bier Stein more than I can because I live within walking distance and frequented their old location for the pretzels and bratwurst frequently. If you want great beer and mediocre food, then stick with the bier stein. From the charcuterie plate to the salads, and mac and cheese, the Bier Stein is more about quick convenience than quality. Food is served fast and you don't have to wait long. I do love sitting outside and always bring visitors from out of town for a pint, but we always stroll to Newmans or Membrillo for food. BEER & CIDER Great variety of beer and some cider on tap and in the GINORMOUS cooler, sorted by varieties so if you like an IPA, you head for the IPA section (and can get help if you need from one of the beer nerds that work there, with a nice techie option of ordering your beers/food via phone (once you've waited in line to order the FIRST time, and with a smart phone you can view the tap options even if you can't see the board from your table (they have MANY). I like how the tap screens above the register show how full the keg is, so if you want to try a particular beer, you can tell if you had better order that one FIRST before it runs out! FOOD The Beer Cheese Soup with the hot pretzel is almost always ordered at our table when somebody's hungry (delicious!), the panini sandwiches are decent, the nachos are large, the salad is good quality (NOT iceberg lettuce!). NOISE: HOWEVER, boy is this place LOUD and BUSY on evenings, weekends, game days! It's hard to carry on a conversation at a table when it is THAT full. Parking is a bit of a pain, as when it is busy, the lot gets full fast, and then goes the side street's parking. read more

They serve mostly salads, sandwiches and comfort food. I've never had anything from them I didn't like, and the beer cheese soup is consistently great, but at the same time they don't even have a burger on the menu, which I consider to be fairly de rigueur for beer-centric eateries.
