Pretty upset with my once regular go-to gastro-pub. I've been going here over the past few years and usually enjoy the consistency of the food and service, but today I was pretty steamed about the service I didn't get. I didn't bring lunch to work so I needed to eat out. I work a couple blocks away and arrived just after noon today. All I ordered was six buffalo wings. I sat down. After 10 min. I contacted a server and said I'd be outside holding up my number sign so she could see it. After sitting another 15 min. I walked inside and went to the order station and looked at the server food window and saw all these "to-go" containers being closed up for some BIG order. When the counter person noticed me and asked if he could help, I said I had been waiting over 20 minutes for my appetizer wing order and now had to go back to work. He asked if I wanted my order boxed. I replied I wished I had been told there was a big order before I placed mine, as I would have gone somewhere else but Yes, I would like my food boxed. He went over and found my order and boxed it and brought it to me and said "thanks." Well, no lunch break for me today. Pretty pissed. I'll have to find another gastro-pub to patron. read more

My favorite Beervana stop in Eugene. Causual College town feel. Crowded and noisy at times but that's part of the vibe! The selection of beer is vast and varied with many beers on tap as well as a cider or two, but if that doesn't satisfy you the huge multitude of canned and bottled beer to choose from in their cooler should. The food is always good. This visit I had the jerk pork and it had the required kick of a true jerk (though perhaps not quite as intense as if one were in Jamaica). Really tasty stuff. If you are looking for a great brew pub type experience with food a notch above the standard and don't mind a bit of a noisy room, head on over. If we're in town, we'll be there! read more

Ordered fries and a beer. Beer was good and arrived in a timely manner. The fries however took 35 minutes. Guess what they were cold. Told waiter guy and he said he would take the fries off the bill. He was a liar. I had to call the next day for a refund. Good beer and cold food enjoy. read more

Easily the best spot in town to get a beer ( despite fierce competition), food menu could use little more excitement but it definitely shines on occasion with different seasonal offerings . The staff itself deserves five stars though, always very friendly ( not fake ) and knowledgeable. Definitely a place for a beer lovers that can accommodate anyone, have fun at various events throughout a year and enjoy a pint or three. One of my favorite places in town either to go on a date and sit next to a fireplace or watch any of sport events on a big screen and definitely take home something new from crazy bottle selection from the cooler. read more

Somehow I have never managed to make it into the Bier Stein for food prior to this visit. The service was great and the staff really know their beer. The tap list is huge and they even have an app you can use to see the level of the kegs before you stop by for a visit. We got to try the Schnitzel with Spatzle and the Farmers Market sandwich. The Schnitzel was great, the Spatzle not so much (too mushy) and the Farmers Market sandwich was amazing, especially considering we generally never order vegetarian sandwiches. You wont miss the meat on this one! The selection of bottled beer they have to enjoy on site or take home is astounding. Check 'em out! read more

Why is such bad service the standard now? Hipster kids who have little to no idea how to serve. Servers walking right by multiple times, three or more hanging out in one spot chatting up a friend, or busy checking out their phone. Where is the management? I get it, serving is hard, but these people haven't been trained. And then of course if there is a hint of a complaint they wonder why. Clueless. On other visits, this place was good, (Which is why it gets three stars instead of one) but today, even though it was not at all busy, food was very slow to come out (compared to other people arriving shortly after us) and so not surprisingly half of it was cold. We asked for a new serving of french fries and that took forever. The meal was over by then. Happy Mother's Day! (We ate halfway between lunch and dinner and so the place was about half empty). also, they used way too much salt! but since previous visits were very good I suspect maybe this was just an unusual case where they were short of staff. read more

First of all I've loved Beir Stein since they opened and have spent countless work meetings, birthdays, and gatherings here. Excellent food and beer choices. One event will forever change my outlook on this company. One individual specifically treated my friends and I with complete and utter disrespect. 9/22 a group of 13 of my closest friends were celebrating my surprise bachelorette party that was originally cancelled after the loss of my brother. We were celebrating love, friendship, and my brother. When asked where I wanted to eat I didn't hesitate because I've always gone to Bier Stein. Three of our group members wanted Rivas so they came back on the premises to sit with us who all had ordered drinks. The "alcohol monitor" by the name of Austin approached them with a very negative tone specifically towards the only African American friend there. Instead of politely informing no outside food was welcome (which was completely understandable), he threatened to call the cops, lied about her mouthing off to him (we have multiple witnesses), and 86'ed her from Beir Stein (all over a burrito!). She did not argue with him. They all three packed up their burritos and left without argument. This escalated to a harassment and racial target. When you say the other two are fine (they are white) and you say the "tall black girl" isn't allowed back, you sir are a racist pig. Won't ever be back unless this gentlemen's sees discipline for his actions. I am in total shock that it's 2018 and Eugene, OR still has individuals that treat customers this way. We all left with all our beers completely full and will not be back. Totally disrespectful. read more

I chose to sit at the bar, have a beer and order some dinner. The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. The food was less than desirable; bland and borderline off-condition. The bar was too tall or the stool was too short. I felt as though I was sliding the food into my mouth rather than lifting it (I'm 5-11). Was in town visiting a friend of the family and was told about this place by the beer tender at The Growler Guys - this place is awesome. It was myself, my mother, and my 14 year old son - the bottle selection is top notch (as well as sodas) - tap list was amazing as well. There is no shortage of beer spots in this town, but I love this place! Perfect for hanging with a friend, or a group of friends. Their beer selection is amazing and I'm always excited to see what's new on tap. As far as food goes, i've only ever had the nachos, but that is because they are so good, I will order them every time. Trey was so patient and absolutely on the ball. We sat at the bar, surrounded by people with "ding, ding" cycle t-shirts". Trey didn't have one on, but that didn't keep Trey down. Trey worked diligently to replenish our waters before we asked and answered stupid questions about things around the bar. I'm glad we didn't annoy Trey too much. Actually, we probably annoyed Trey, but Trey kept it cool and made us feel welcome. Excellent customer service. Excellent restaurant. Excellent beer cheese soup. Excellent ding ding apparel. The constant changing of the tap list makes each experience fresh and new. It's like a Beer Disneyworld that keeps changing out the rides every time you visit...if Disneyworld was actually a fun place to visit. read more

So ok, maybe food is not really their thing, I ordered chicken strips and doughnuts, which I thought I remembered it was pretty good. The doughnut were good sure, the chicken was the frozen crap you get in a bag off the Cisco truck or Tyson from the grocers. I also ordered fries crispy with ranch on the side, they were limp and pale and they gave me ketchup, telling me they dont read the whole order or they dont care, they were also cold and nasty so I tossed em. Finally and maybe I shoulda mentioned this first when i came in to pick up my order it wasn't at the pickup counter and when I tracked it down and the main counter a server standing right next to it was chatting away so I called to him and gestured to my order and he replied he couldn't give it to me because he was off the clock and not sanitized. All he really had to do is slide it to me across the counter but he stood there looking at me like an idiot. Hard to keep social distance if you stand in the way of me simply stepping up and picking up my order. So, doughnuts good, thats it. Oh and beer, they have lots of beer which is what I think this place is pretty much all its good for. read more

I heard great things about The Bier Stein and the food they served. I didn't hear any real specifics, however, so my wife and I stopped in for a quick bite to eat before seeing a movie. The first thing we noticed is that there was not near enough parking. Sure, okay, that's normal anymore, especially if the place is worth it - a good sign. When I first walked in, the crowd and setup were startling - really not what I was expecting at all. After weaving through the packed dining room and noticing that everything is ordered at the register, we managed to grab a couple of menus and stood in line for ten minutes. We got up to the register and ordered and got our table marker. Of course, at that point, we had to find seating. Another ten to fifteen minutes later (we had to stalk diners until we saw some that were about to leave), we were able to get a table next to a couple of screaming kids and a bunch of college students. We waited 45 minutes for our food, which turned out to be pretty tiny plates for the price. We ate our tiny portions in the packed and ridiculously loud dining room and got out of there as fast as we could. I guess I enjoy a more relaxing location to have a beer. Its definitely a team effort to eat here. read more

Wow, incredibly disappointed. When you have to justify your staff's racial comments by saying something like, "well that wouldn't happen because the owner's family is a minority", there's an issue not only with that statement but the entire establishment. Where is the customer service at this place? There is none. Extremely disappointed by the lack of courtesy from the manager as well as other staff members for attacking and berating a minority female at this location in front of the restaurant. A pilgrimage to " The Bier Stein" is a must for ALL beer lovers! It's truly a beer lover's paradise! Everything I had "hops'd" for an excellent collection of IPA's, both local and across state lines and international borders. The ambience is excellent with the most fitting decor. A wall of variety bottled beers and unique non alcoholic beverages for non beer drinkers to select from. Nice selection of foods with suggested beer recommendations to go with the menus selection. It was everything I hoped it would be. No where else in the area can you find a dedicated wall of beer for sale. They had Oregon beers, Washington beers, Colorado beers, other US beers, German beers, UK beers, Belgium beers and beers from other parts of the world too. You can buy these beers and be on your way, or you can choose to drink your beer there, where they have all the right glasses for the different styles of beer. They also offer a good amount of beers on tap in addition to the bottles and cans. All the staff I interacted with were friendly. I could tell they had a good passion for beer. It was very nice to be among other enthusiasts. The individual craft breweries around here are certainly worth visiting, but if you want to go to a place that is about good beer in general, look no further than here. read more

This place still has ninkasi ground control. Only place I've found it. The pork schnitzel was gristley. I attempted to order a pitcher of beer and was asked who I was sharing it with. ... This offended me. Is it an Oregon requirement to show just cause when ordering a pitcher? The order line is usually crazy long. You can order from your phone and get it to go. The new Bier Stein location page! I always loved the Bier Stein, but after today's visit, I don't feel like I could justify even three stars anymore. I'm not a fan of the new location, even though I had been looking forward to the Bier Stein's expansion for months! I question their decision to move outside of walking distance from campus, and away from the main student bus routes, but okay, I've got a car, so not my problem. The building seemed like an improvement sizewise, and I enjoyed eating here when it was June, despite the restaurant always being a little loud. Unfortunately, now that the Bier Stein has opened up the space entirely to create one huge room (sweet fire place btw!), the noise is out of control. I'm really not sensitive to loud noise, to the contrary, I like busy bars, concerts, and clubs, but the hollow, rumbling sound of this place makes the Bier Stein sound like an extremely loud factory full of drilling machines. The noise is unbearable. The food is still good as always, no major complaints there. Best beer cheese soup I've ever eaten, and the tuna melt is stellar on their crunchy-soft ciabatta. The only thing that we no longer like is the nachos, which used to have cheese sauce and now just have melted cheese. Way too little. Very dry. The service is another problem. The Bier Stein used to have waiter service. Now you have to order at the bar. Don't envision this experience as a rustic restaurant counter so much as that irritating feeling of standing at a bar for ages, desperately trying to order as the bartenders ignore you in favor of a few regulars and some drunk girls with their tits hanging out. The ordering station was chaos. Eight people behind the bar, no clear lines despite there being three or four people taking food orders, and I spent 15(!!) minutes waiting to have my order taken, at 2pm, with only two people in front of me. It simply took that long! Took three times as long to get our food too, compared with the last location. Oh, and we had to go get cash, because their credit card machines were out. Fortunately I had my emergency cash stash in the car. In short: Awesome food as always, but the new location is pure chaos, long waits, standing at the bar trying to get an order in while most of the staff ignores you, and painfully loud. I used to love the Bier Stein, but unless they fix the service and sound, I doubt I'll ever be back again. Disappointing. read more

This place is always packed, so I figured it would live up to the hype. It didn't. It gets two stars because it has a bangin' beer selection and the decor is cool. Basically, if I go somewhere to drink and dine, and I don't want to be responsible for the work. I don't see how a place (that is cool in concept) can charge such premium prices but expect their customers to do everything. If I have to walk up to your ridiculous serving station for beer, I expect you to not get your hair in it. And if I walk in at 11:30, I don't want to deal with your bitter tone. We were a little apprehensive about visiting our old favorite in its new location... but, not to worry, it was amazing!!!! I have seen a few reviews that complain about the service at the new place... but I have to ask, had they ever even been to the old location? The new system is a vast, vast, vast improvement. The way it works is you seat yourself and you order at the counter. This was similar to how it usually worked at the old location... However, at the old location, there were hardly ever seats and there was absolutely no room to line up at the counter (which only had one register) so it was a total cluster____. Now, there are plenty of counters at which to order, and even during lunchtime, it was extremely efficient. Food: Just the same high-quality, delicious fare as before. Thank God. I think I'd been losing sleep wondering about this. If you are a newbie to Bier Stein, get the Reuben on ciabatta and the beer cheese soup. You'll be ruined for life... you're welcome. Service: Better than before due to way more workers and stations. The people running tables were present all the time and were happy to bring salt and pepper, to-go boxes, etc. The order counter ran smoothly. No, it's not as personable as before. But at least now you get to eat here when you want to, because there's enough room for everyone! Ambience: It looks different, but they've kept it similar enough to remind you of the old place and all those great times. The lighting looks very cool. Bathrooms: Oh, thank God they've moved to this modern facility with real bathrooms!!! I heart the new bathrooms. Drawbacks? I only have ONE. The new tap board is disgusting. It is this enormous electronic thing that does not fit in at all with either the vibe or the decor. It's a douchetastic piece of neon-fonted machinery that really belongs in a Buffalo Wild Wings. I want them to take it down and get a chalkboard like everyone else in the world. OVERALL: The new location is beautiful. Yes, the old place was really homey and fun, but if you consider all of the new benefits, I think the trade-off is worth it. I cannot f-ing wait for Duck football season! read more

Visited the new location with my wife for the first time. We talked about going for several weeks and waited for the U of O students to leave for summer break in hopes that the crowd would be smaller. We enjoyed the old location but were excited about the new location because we knew it would be cleaner and bigger. After this visit we agree that we will not be back very often if at all. The positives: - Clean environment. - Kitchen is enclosed so you don't smell like food when you leave now - Great selection of beer The negatives: - The electronics signs are hard to read and confusing. I wanted to order a pint of beer but my first several choices were not available in pints - Confronting a line when walking in is a big negative for me. It was not clear how many registers were open. - Too NOISY !! I often complain about noise in a restaurant and my wife rarely notices it. We both agreed it was too noisy to have conversation without repeating ourselves. read more

Wow, amazing beer selection and great food. The atmosphere is very upbeat and friendly. I've been here a few times with friends and enjoy it every time. The cheese beer soup is delicious and they are always changing their beers on tap so there's definitely something everyone will like. I've been here twice now and still it's just below average. Nothing to write home about. We had the Agarian Polobamo and it didn't disappoint. Ordered food and it was very bland again and even stingy on the fried onions on the French dip. I think I had a total of 5 slivers of onion ring and onions are a cheap ingredient. Please add more. The Nachos made both of our stomachs churn after an hour. The black beans need to be washed thoroughly before they are served. The best part we arrived at 4 on a Friday and not many people there so the line at the counter went fast. However if I arrived at 5 the line was getting longer and there wasn't enough staff to help out. Would I return? Only to get a beer and nothing else. It was recommended to visit the Bier Stein before I came to visit family in Eugene. So, I decided to check it out. Wow. Was I severely disappointed. You have to wait in LONG lines to get a beer, order food, etc. I like sitting at a table to relax with a beer and food - not standing in line over and over and over. While having all the tap beers is interesting, there is no way to know what they are like, what they taste like, etc. I ended up grabbing a couple of bottle beers that I knew since I was not about buy a draft and hate it. The food. Yuck. Most of the sandwiches have peppered bacon on them. I had to revert to ordering just chips and salsa. The chips were not bad. The salsa was just tomatoes-o-bits. My favorite spot for beer in town, rotating tap is on point and with virtually any bottled beer available is awesome. They even update their website very well which seems very difficult with the volume of beer. If you're going for beer, this is easily a 5. However I ordered the schnitzel and spatzle. Ummm it was a little dissapointing. The meat was not tender and ot was gristly. I may have unreal expectations after sampling it from all over germany and austria but it wasn't any better than I could make at home. I can't complain too much because the pricing on it was great, no where else can you get this for under 10 dollars. Pretzel was tasty and I found myself wanting to lick the damn cup of bier cheese soup. Friends ordered sandwiches here and they looked far superior to the schnitzel.
