I went here because someone had brought me the most delicious bagel one time, and I mistakenly thought it was from the Bagelry. I had come on and read the reviews and was so torn between my desire not to patronize a company with a rude owner, and my desire to taste that deliciousness again. My craving won out, so to the Bagelry went I. I knew from reading the reviews that it was cash-only, so I brought $10. When I went to order, I placed an order for all the flavor of bagels I wanted (they didn't have the one I went for, only now it was too late for me to go somewhere else), and then I went to order cream cheese. I calculated how much I had left to spend after the bagel order, and decided on the size I could afford. The air-headed girl taking my order tried to upsell me, telling me how much more I would get in the bigger container. And I said "well that may be true, but I have to pay cash, so I'll go with the smaller one." With vacant eyes and a condescending voice, she says "You have to pay cash either way." So with all the patience I could muster, I slowly reply "But I only have so much cash on me..." duh. I mean, how many people really carry around cash anymore anyway? Doesn't take much common sense to deduce why I truly *have* to stick to a budget in a cash-only place. Anyway, the bagels were fine, just ho-hum. Nothing to get excited about. The cream cheese was good, and I thought a good price. And for the record, the smaller container I bought was more than enough anyway. Later that day, I inquired of the person who'd brought me the other delicious bagel, and he said he got it at Grace Cafe. I'm telling you, go there! Their jalapeno bagels are to-die for! I've never had a New York bagel (one day!), but I feel like The Bagelry is the closest you can get to one in the Pacific Northwest. Just any bagel with cream cheese will only cost ya $2.30, which is very reasonable. Their bagel sandwiches are all within the realm of $5-$7, which is also reasonable. Their lox sandwich is one of the best I've ever had. They're cash only and the ATM fee teeters between $3 and $4, which is a lot-- the price of the bagel you're getting. They've been cash only for years and are probably going to keep things that way since they make so much money off their ATM fee, which goes to charity. However, I want to ask the owners- HAVE YOU HEARD OF SQUARE? Avoid those credit card surcharges and say thanks to your customers. No? Okay, I figured as much. ^this is a conversation I have with myself every time I go here. Hours are weird, but typical of a bagel place- they close at 4pm, 3pm on Sundays. Get in there early- this probably isn't a place you'll make it to on hangover time. A 12-pk of Bagelry bagels is how I let my family members know I love them. It's the nicest little gesture. This is one of the best places you'll grab lunch in Bellingham, which says a lot about Bellingham (wamp wamp). read more

Review update: the Bagelry replied to my original post about how much I didn't like them, and I appreciate the information and attention to customers. I still think it is uncool to require customers without cash to pay a high-surcharge ATM fee, but they donate the fees they collect to local charities, so that is good. Also, they toast bagels now. I haven't been in here in a while and was rather disappointed. They weren't that busy but somehow forgot 3 things I ordered. When my coffee finally arrived it was cold because they did remember to make it...just forgot to bring it to me. The bagels are good, but I've had better, so not being from here, I won't venture to say they are the BEST EVER. I don't understand why they don;t toast them-or why their so weird about it. Never having been there before, I requested mine non toasted (not knowing they didn't offer it) and a older man who was taking my order said "Good-because we won't anyway" A little bit of a rude way to dismiss that, but he got a little ruder after telling my friend who had a coffee from somewhere else that she was not allowed to eat her bagel in the store-she had to leave and go somewhere else.. Nom nom nom... I do love me some bagels! I used to get lox, plain bagel and cream cheese with red onions and tomatoes all the time growing up at Noah's in seattle. So when I got up to bham and found their local bagel hangout i was in there in a heartbeat. I ordered exactly what I stated above and I got lox cream cheese on a bagel with a few cherry tomatoes on the side and a couple of slices of onion. I went back to the counter and told them they made a mstake, They apologized and remade it but grumbled bout the price diference so i paid the diference. Other than that the bagels were AWESOME!!! they were good, yummy and tasty,,, chewey and a touch crispy. The extras (ie lox, cream cheese, onions and tomatoes) were always a little less than amazing but descent. People were generally helpful but got a bit confused at times with my orders. The seats were uncomfortable but bareable for a while. its worth it when you get a true bagel craving. read more

I wasn't really expecting a great bagel in Bellingham, and I wasn't disappointed. Both too chewy and too bready, the bagels are...meh. I ordered the breakfast special - a bagel, two eggs, and a small coffee. It's listed at $4.90. I added cheese. My total came to just over $7. That's right. Seven dollars. For the breakfast special. Call me crazy, but I expect a special to be one of the most affordably priced menu items. And then it took 15 minutes to come out of the kitchen. Baglery bagels are the best bagels that I have eaten in my life. Their cream cheese is very tasty as well. The people that work here care about their town and genuinely want to help you. This place was an easy stop for breakfast while running errands downtown. Although it seemed like everyone who worked there was new (didn't know what was in certain drinks when I asked, wasn't sure what the different meals came with) they were still nice and as helpful as they could be with limited knowledge of the place. I got the quinoa scramble (eggs, quinoa, onion, red pepper, mushroom) it also came with a bagel of my choice on the side. I got everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. My boyfriend got the plain bagel with plain cream cheese (a little boring I know ;) the scramble was pretty good with lots of quinoa and red pepper. I would have liked some more veggies or flavor because quinoa sometimes doesn't have a huge flavor range. However the everything bagel with jalapeño was really yummy- you could tell the cream cheese was fresh and the jalapeños were cut and mixed in (a lot of places use canned jalapeños which is not as tasty). My boyfriend also said his cream cheese was delicious and very fresh tasting. I also ordered their "house tea" a red raspberry tea- although I couldn't get a straight answer about what was in it, it seemed like green tea to me and it was very refreshing on a hot summer day. So overall I was impressed with the quality of cream cheese but needed a little more oomph in my scramble (although for 6.19$- it was impressive for the price point) and would have liked the employees to be a little more knowledgeable about the product. My boyfriend also noted there wasn't any meat options for breakfast bagel sandwiches which he was disappointed with. read more

Egg bagel with avocado and cheese was quite yummy! Everywhere I travel, I'm always looking for a great bagel place. There used to be one in Anacortes, but unfortunately it disappeared. I'm giving this 4 stars for the moment, as I've only been there once, but I'll go back. My only complaint was it was the middle of the afternoon, not hopping, no line, but the service was slow. No one even greeted me while I stood at the counter for a few minutes. I totally hate this place. And I am ashamed to say that I go here a lot, simply because Bellingham doesn't have many other bagel options, and none close by. So I kick myself every time I walk in the door. I fully agree with Chris M who wrote in October 2012 about the absolute lack of customer-service ethic by the ownership. (Which is different than the customer service ethic of the staff -- I happen to like them; they're courteous; and they treat you with a smile.) But seriously -- this place was Bagel store for years WITHOUT A TOASTER. Who does that??? Then they finally get a toaster and the local paper actually covers the story -- as though they should be congratulated for getting a toaster. And now when you walk in, there's a lovely sign that says: "We are working as hard as we can. If you want your bagel toasted, please be patient." Seriously?? This is how you treat your customers? Every thing about this place makes you feel that you are a nuisance when you walk in. The fact that the prices are sky high. The fact that you can order the same thing every time you go in and you can never know what they're going to charge you. (Really. My tuna bagel with nothing else on it either costs $4.51 or $5.16. And when I raised that issue to the cashier, she tried to explain to me that it's always $5.16. Oh so helpful.) The fact that you can't use plastic. The iddy biddy piece of scrap paper that they write your order down on and then have you take to the cashier. Okay, i get going green. But surely you could be less obnoxious. Some days I think I should open my own bagel store next door and drive them out of business. I can't stand the fact that they're making a ton of money. The Baglery is hands down, the best place in town to get your bagel fix. The bagels are fresh, the service is great, and the prices are just right. I'm a sucker for some good Lox and cream cheese and the Bagelry doesn't disappoint. Get it with some chips and a soda and it's the prefect meal deal. Located downtown, it's within walking distance to just about everything, so you can grab your lunch and spend the afternoon cruising around town. a bit of a mixed experience here that was salvaged by great customer service and just general kindness. on first try, the bagel sandwich I was served was cold and hard as a rock (clearly had been toasted and then left to sit out for a while before serving). I felt uncertain about asking for a re-do because that always feels kind of crummy, but it truly was inedible. fortunately, the staff at the counter was so kind and didn't make me feel bad about it at all...and the re-made sandwich was great!! thanks bagelry! read more

I haven't been here in years, but in my college days I would stop every so often. They have a great variety of nummy spreads and the bagels are decent, but I've had better many other places. Like others, I never really understood the"no toasting" house rule. Very strange business practice to not accommodate the reasonable request of so many customers. I hear they have one now....that only took, what, a couple decades? Maybe in another decade or so they will decide to take credit cards. read more

I have patronized the Bagelry for 20 plus years, and today they have lost my business. I am a bellingham local, live in town and support local business. I won't go into great detail, but the cashiers need to be upfront and not be so vague. The owner was condescending and embarrassed my friend and I. I will go to the grace cafe from now on for my bagels, they also have "good coffee".... God the owner was rude today! Anyways.... Maybe just get your food to go, or don't support the Bagelry like my friend and I. Today he may have thought I was a western student, Canadian or from out of town..... But I will make sure that my friends and fellow hamsters and locals who were born and raised here, here about my experience.
