Needed a quick gluten free meal in Bellingham to scarf down before an event, and my friend who went to Western told me that this used to be his go to spot. I used their website to do a takeout order for a tuna melt on gluten free bread. Went in about 10 min later and had to wait, but loved getting to explore! So many cool sauces, wines, and other goods. I didn't try any, but have heard that they have some incredible sauces too. My tuna melt was great! The gluten free bread was sturdy and the toppings were generous and delicious. They gave me ample napkins too, which were lovingly needed. I would grab takeout again here in the future! read more

I have loved coming to Old World Deli for the last 6 years since moving to Bellingham. I could always rely on them for a good sandwich that left my heart & stomach feeling full. I hadn't been to the shop since early last year and was really excited to grab lunch here with a friend. However, I wasn't prepared for how much the quality of food and service has changed since I last came in. The lobby has undergone some changes, the renovated counter space looks nice and the imports still have a great selection. Nevertheless, the renovations didn't sway the promise of a delicious sandwich I was looking forward to. The person who rang us up didn't say much as we ordered our food, but we still left a decent tip because I wanted to support the business. When our food came out we were sorely disappointed. The quality has dropped immensely, which is such a let down considering the expensive price of their food. My friend purchased a roast beef panini, and it was truly a joke of a sandwich. For $14 (before tax) we felt as though we'd been scammed. There was little to no flavor, creativity or imagination in this washed up excuse for a meal. We hoped the macaroni and potato salads we ordered with it would fix the whole in our stomachs the sandwiches couldn't fill, but they weren't much better. I know the owners have split in the last year or so and it really shows in the quality. I wish I had something nice to say, but I won't be back for another year unless something changes. Please consider lowering your prices or start making your sandwiches palatable. This location that I've always loved in the heart of Bellingham has really let me down. read more

Wow am I glad I stopped here on a whim during our road trip home! I spotted it via google maps and liked the name, saw it had good reviews and put in a to go order on the phone. It was ready in 10 minutes. I LOVED the pastrami sandwich, the prosciutto panini was also very tasty as well. Only downside is it's quite expensive for the size of the sandwiches, $35 for two. Expensive sandwich for mediocore food. It's disappointing to pay 20 bucks for dry bread. Nothing special for a sandwich and on top of that, the service is slow. I have nothing positive to say. The sandwich is edible which is why I give it 3 stars. But I would spend my 20 bucks to buy fresh ingredients and make several sandwiches at home. (I get it's hard owning a business and paying overhead but I think it's way too expensive for a sandwich). read more

My "Go-To" place when in Bellingham! I didn't know about them for the first few years I lived in the area, thank goodness or I would have weighed 500+ pounds. I cannot say enough good things about them, the service is always friendly and the muffuletta sandwich is out of this world. Since I no longer live in the area but do visit I stop in and buy two, one for now and one to take home. If there was a bad thing it is that I hate driving in downtown Bellingham... my issue and not theirs. Stop in and have the best lunch you have ever had. I recently ordered some imported meats and cheeses online. When I picked up my order they had given me a picante meat instead of the picante provolone I had ordered. The cave aged gruyere tasted like it was old, the guanciale I received ruined my carbonara dish and was of very poor quality. I drove forty five minutes to pick this up. Stopped by to check out the tin fish selection which was decent. Decided to stick around for lunch. I can't say I would recommend this place nor would I go back. I just expect more for the price of the sandwiches. I got a half spicy Italian($10) and my bf got the horseradish roast beef whole ($14). Mine was a decent sandwich but my bfs sandwich just didn't look appetizing at all. 3 slices of roast beef for the whole sandwich just didn't really bode well for the portion of bread. Honestly the bread was the saving grace of the sandwich as overall the sandwich had no flavor. The horseradish was extremely faint. I wish I had taken a picture of it. Very underwhelming. Got a bag of chips($4) with our meal which was an interesting flavor of fried egg. Fun to try but we noticed after we got into the bag that the chips were expired. They did refund me for the chips which I appreciate. Service was friendly though I wouldn't have bothered tipping if I knew eating in ment you grab your order when it's "up", get your own water, and bus your own table. I'm fine with doing all that but I'm just one of those people that don't believe in tipping to do all the work yourself. read more

I ordered a hoagie from the menu, non-gluten bread. I was served one slice of bread, cut in half, not a hoagie roll. The sandwich was about 2"x4"x0.5", about 1/3 the size of a hoagie roll sandwich. And I was charged an extra fee for this undersized, non-hoagie. read more

What can I say? OWD is a staple lunch place for me, and I love it. If you can get their Hungarian Mushroom soup, get it and eat it all. I bought two containers to take home because it is just THAT good. The daily specials and soups are posted to Facebook every day, and it's like the NFL draft looking to see what's new. I have never had a bad meal there - not even a "just ok" one. Everything is fresh, made to order, and delicious! I love that you can shop in the grocery section for hard-to-find specialty items, and even open a bottle of wine with your meal should you want to. They have specialty cured meats and cheeses, and it's the only place I've seen guanciale! No, it's not the cheapest place out there, but you do get what you pay for. And here, you get delicious, high quality food. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and I hope to be able to get lunch here for many years to come. read more

We returned to the Old World Deli after being so impressed with our previous visit in November 2023. This time, we were not as impressed. We both ordered sandwiches, and a bowl of Tomato Soup. First off I must say that the Tomato Soup was excellent, and most certainly ranks up there with the best Tomato Soup that we've ever had at a restaurant. Now for the two sandwiches. I ordered the Chicken Basil Panini, and I was less than impressed with the lack of the first ingredient, chicken. My sandwich may have had 3 ounces of chicken, but that might be pushing it. And my friends Grilled Vegetable Panini was even a bigger letdown, this sandwich was nearly void of anything other than bread. See for yourself in the photos. The Old World Deli is charging $12.95 for both of these sandwiches, so maybe they should add enough ingredients and not be so obsessed with cutting food costs. I went to the website and noticed the sandwich on the home page, stuffed full of chicken, lettuce, cheese, I'm sad to say that is not anywhere close to the sandwiches we were served at the Old World Deli. If I ever return I'll just stick with the soup and maybe a cup of coffee. They can keep the two slices of bread for $13. read more

Having moved back to Southern California three years ago I'm sorry I never took the time to write a review of OWD when I lived in the city of subdued excitement for some 25 years. OWD is a true gem. Everything from their sandwiches to there soups to their deli meats are as spot on and well stocked as you will find anywhere. Their platters were my Thanksgiving appetizer go to. My favorite item was the tuna stuffed pepperoncini! (AND no mayo used!) Since moving away I've tried to make them at home -- not even close :) Some of my other favorites were the Spicy Italian Sub, the Muffaletta sub, the Chicken Pesto, and their soups NEVER disappoint! I've read some of the recent reviews which seem to focus on service issues during this horrible pandemic. I don't know about B'ham but here in SoCal service everywhere has been problematic, and as of this writing can still can be spotty. All I can say is the service there was never anything but wonderful! Yes, at busy times a bit slow but not because they weren't hustling, they were just busy. Chris and Anna were always hands on and on top of everything. I've even had them send gift baskets to folks down here! I would just call give them my card info with a few hints about the recipient(s) and they did a perfect job. Sad to say, skip the reuben sandwich. Worst reuben I've ever had, couldn't even get past a few bites - meat was tough/stringy/fatty and flavorless, sauerkraut had next to no vinegar so it was basically just wet wilted cabbage (barf), and only a tiny bit of thousand island dressing (more might have helped make it tolerable, but hard to say). Rosemary rye is also a weird choice for this type of sandwich though I could have gotten past that if the rest of the sandwich was any good. My spouse had the spicy Italian sub and said there was so much vinegar all other flavors were drowned out. Many people like the sandwiches from Old World Deli. I am not one of them. Every time I order a sandwich here I am disappointed. Their deli certainly contains great meats, cheese, etc. That makes it even more frustrating when they are so skimpy with them. The sandwiches are meager at best. As a host, I would be embarrassed to serve my guest a sandwich like these. Example: A Reuben should be big and thick with the fillings spilling out over the edges of the bread. Let's call it, "Excitement on a Plate". This is not the case at Old World Deli. The word skimpy comes to mind. The sandwichs I have received have been a pure disappointment and let down. I will not be disappointed again. My sandwich dollar is more satisfyingly spent elsewhere. read more

The sandwiches are delicious: chicken curry is outstanding; and also the pastrami- for me it's the best in this city!! The soups are incredibly tasty, however, some are a bit too salty- the minestrone, the one with kale, and the Hungarian one. Purchased a salad today that was good but over priced. But what struck me was how absolutely miserable the staff is. I was at the door at 11:am there opening time. A woman inside tidying rather than opening on time. she could see me outside, she ignored me and didn't open till 7 minutes after. No pleasantries no greeting not one broke a smile. I have missed having someone else make my food. Even if it is just sandwiches! But lets be real...this place is more than just sandwiches. It is so good no matter what you get. They have been posting their specials on facebook. I got to the location 1 hour after they posted a meatloaf sandwich and it was already sold out! I was bummed, but know no matter what I would not be disappointed. I opted for the the Pork Bun instead. It had arugula, rosemary aoili, peppers and delicious thinly sliced pork loin. It was amazing! I ordered the side salad and the pasta salad. The pasta salad had really great flavor. Little bits of pickles and peppers maybe? And the salad was so fresh, but came with too much dressing. My wife got the muffuletta which is a classic. The olive spread would be good on anything. It actually brings up memories of when she used to get her sour dough bread from some woman. Its fun to hear the stories. We got a cup of Hungarian mushroom and it was better than I could have imagined. The flavors were amazing. We also had a cup of the chicken with wild rice. Both soups had the perfect amount of ingredients and the broths were perfectly seasoned. There isn't a lot of great soups in this town. I am so excited to try more. I also bought some great finds on their store shelves. They were busy and all the guests were super patient. The staff was very helpful. I am so excited to go back and try more. When the Governor announced restaurants would need to close for dining in, and we only had one more day to out for lunch, I RAN to Old World Deli and got "one last Muffaletta" to enjoy before they closed down. What I didn't realize at the time was that they were planning to stay open and that they have! I've been back twice for takeout. They have an amazing grab-and-go fridge from which I've enjoyed Hungarian Mushroom Soup and - last night - meatloaf and mashed potatoes with glazed carrots. The to-go meals are a great value and, of course, I "need" to grab a bottle of wine while I'm picking them up. Thanks OWD for making shelter-in-place a little more delicious! read more

Wonderful place! Their Muffaletta Sandwich gave me Rattatouille childhood flashback vibes... I fell in love with Deli Sandwiches all over again and I didn't even think I was a die hard deli sandwich fan! LOL The Coconut Shortbread cookies were yummy as well! Iced Vanilla Latte is decent (coffee bean flavor is good) and the Coconut Curry Carrot Soup was a little on the spicy side and interesting... but that Muffaletta... I will be dreaming and drooling about it in my sleep. :) They also have a lot of little things to try! Can't wait! read more

We ordered a mortadella and an Italian sandwich. We couldn't tell the difference between either when we opened them up. Looked like the same sandwich as they weren't labeled. Sandwiches were amazing a few years ago. But prices keep going up and the last few times it's been more miss than hit. Often too much sauce / soggy bread, and sometimes not enough of anything else. It's a shame because the ingredients are great. Their grocery section has some hard to find Italian specialty products, but it's kind of an odd selection and a lot of it seems to be gathering dust - they probably don't have enough turnover to keep everything fresh. read more
